What’s the best fuel for your car?

Historically, most cars have run on gasoline,

لەڕووی مێژووییەوە زۆربەی ئۆتۆمبێلەکان به‌ بەنزین كاریان كردووه‌،

but that doesn’t have to be the case in the future:

other liquid fuels and electricity can also power cars.

So what are the differences between these options?

And which one’s best?

Gasoline is refined from crude oil,

بەنزین لە نەوتی خاو جیاده‌كرێته‌وه‌،

a fossil fuel extracted from deep underground.

سووتەمەنی بەسوودی دەرهێنراوە لە ژێر زەوییەوە.

The energy in gasoline comes from a class of molecules called hydrocarbons.

له‌ به‌نزیندا وزه‌كان له‌كۆمه‌ڵێ گه‌ردیله‌ پێكدێن پیان ده‌ڵێن هایدرۆكاربۆن.

There are hundreds of different hydrocarbons in crude oil,

به‌ سه‌دان هایدرۆكاربۆنی جیاواز هه‌یه‌ له‌ نه‌وتی خاودا،

and different ones are used to make gasoline and diesel—

به‌ جیا به‌كارهاتوون بۆ دروستكردنی به‌نزین و دیزل—

which is why you can't use them interchangeably.

Fuels derived from crude oil are extremely energy dense,

bringing a lot of bang for your buck.

Unfortunately, they have many drawbacks.

Oil spills cause environmental damage and cost billions of dollars to clean up.

Air pollution from burning fossil fuels like these

kills 4.5 million people each year.

And transportation accounts for 16% of global greenhouse gas emissions,

almost half of which comes from passenger cars burning fossil fuels.

These emissions warm the planet and make weather more extreme.

In the U.S. alone, storms caused by climate change

ته‌نها له‌ ئه‌مریكا زریانە‌كان به‌هۆی گۆڕانه‌ له‌ كه‌چوهه‌وادا

caused $500 billion of damage in the last five years.

So while gas is efficient,

something so destructive can't be the best fuel.

The most common alternative is electricity.

Electric cars use a battery pack and electric motor

ئۆتۆمبێله‌ كاره‌باییه‌كان باتریه‌كی كاره‌بای و ماتۆڕێكی كاره‌بای

instead of the internal combustion engine found in gas-powered cars,

له‌باتی به‌كارهێنانی بزوێنه‌ری گازكه‌ له‌ ئۆتۆمبێله‌كانی تردا هه‌یه‌،

and must be charged at charging stations.

كه‌ ده‌توانرێت له‌ وێسگه‌كانی بارگاویكردن بارگاوی بكرێته‌وه‌.

With the right power infrastructure, they can be as efficient as gas-powered cars.

له‌ڕێگه‌ی ژێرخانێكی باشی كاره‌با ده‌توانرێت وه‌ك گاز بێ هاوتابێت.

If powered by electricity generated without fossil fuels,

ئه‌گه‌ر ته‌نها به‌ كاره‌با په‌ره‌ی پێدرا و سوته‌مه‌نی نه‌ویست،

they can avoid greenhouse gas emissions entirely.

They’re more expensive than gas-powered cars,

but the cost difference has been shrinking rapidly since 2010.

The other alternatives to gasoline are other liquid fuels.

بەدیلەکانی تر بۆ بەنزین سووتەمەنی ترن.

Many of these can be shipped and stored using the same infrastructure as gasoline,

ئه‌وانیش ده‌توانرێت هه‌ڵبگیرێن وه‌ك ژێرخانی به‌نزین،

and used in the same cars.

دواتر له‌ هه‌مان ئۆتۆمبێلدا به‌كاربهێنرێت.

They can also be carbon-neutral if they’re made using carbon dioxide

هه‌روه‌ها ده‌توانن كاربۆن بن ئه‌گه‌ر له‌ ئۆكسیدی كاربۆن دروستكرابن

from the atmosphere—

له‌ به‌رگه‌هه‌وای زه‌ویه‌وه‌—

meaning when we burn them, we release that same carbon dioxide back into the air,

and don't add to overall emissions.

One approach to carbon-neutral fuel is to capture carbon dioxide

یه‌ك ڕێگه‌ هه‌یه‌ بۆ سوته‌مه‌نی كاربۆن ئه‌ویش گرتنی ئۆكسیدی كاربۆنه‌

from the atmosphere and combine its carbon with the hydrogen in water.

له‌ به‌رگه‌ هه‌وادا وتێكه‌ڵكردنیه‌تی له‌گه‌ڵ هایدرۆجینی ئاودا.

This creates hydrocarbons, the source of energy in fossil fuels—

ئەمە هایدرۆکاربۆن دروست دەکات سەرچاوەی وزە لە سوته‌مه‌نیه‌ سوتاوه‌كان—

but without any emissions if the fuels are made using clean electricity.

به‌ڵام بێ هیچ ده‌چوونێك ئه‌گه‌ر له‌ كاره‌باوه‌ دروستكراون.

These fuels take up more space

ئەو سوتەمەنیانە ڕووبەری زیاتر دەگرن

than an energetically equivalent amount of gasoline—

وه‌ك له هه‌مان قه‌باره‌ی به‌نزین—

an obstacle to using them in cars.

ڕێگریه‌ك بۆ به‌كارهێنانیان له‌ ئۆتۆمبێلدا.

Another approach is to make carbon-neutral fuels from plants,

ڕێگه‌یه‌كی تر دروستكردی كاربۆنه‌ له‌ ڕێگه‌ی زه‌ویه‌وه‌،

which sequester carbon from the air through photosynthesis.

به‌ گل دانه‌وه‌ی كاربۆنه‌كه‌ له‌ هه‌وادا له‌ڕێگه‌ی فۆتۆسینثیس.

But growing the plants also has to be carbon neutral—

به‌ڵام ڕووه‌كه‌ پێگه‌یشتووه‌كانیش كاربۆن له‌خۆده‌گرن

which rules out many crops that require fertilizer,

كه‌ زۆرێك له‌ ڕووه‌كه‌كان وه‌ك په‌ینی كیمیای پێویستیانه‌،

a big contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

So the next generation of these fuels must be made from either plant waste

or plants that don't require fertilizer to grow.

Biofuels can be about as efficient as gasoline, though not all are.

سوته‌مه‌نیه‌كانی بایۆش ده‌توانن به‌سوودبن وه‌ك به‌نزین.

For a fuel to be the best option, people have to be able to afford it.

بۆ ئەوەی سوتەمەنییەکە باشترین بژاردە بێت خەڵک دەبێت بتوانن پارەیان پێ بدەن.

Unfortunately, the high upfront costs of implementing new technologies

بەداخەوە، تێچووی بەرز لەجێبەجێکردنی تەکنەلۆجیای نوێدا

and heavy subsidies for the producers of fossil fuels,

و کۆمەکی قورس بۆ بەرهەمهێنەرەکان لە سووتەمەنی بەسوود،

mean that almost every green technology

is more expensive than its fossil-fuel-based cousin.

This cost difference is known as a green premium.

Governments have already started subsidizing electric vehicles

to help make up the difference.

In some places, depending on the costs of electricity and gas,

electric cars can already be cheaper overall,

ئۆتۆمبێله‌ كاره‌باییه‌كان ده‌توانرێت هه‌رزانتر بێت،

despite the higher cost of the car.

The other alternatives are trickier, for now—

zero-carbon liquid fuels can be double the price of gasoline or more.

Innovators are doing everything they can to bring green premiums down,

دهێه‌ره‌كا هه‌موو كارێك ده‌كه‌ن بۆ دابه‌زاندنی ئه‌م بیمه‌ سه‌وزه‌،

because in the end, the best fuel will be both affordable for consumers

له‌به‌ر ئه‌وه‌ی له‌ كۆتایدا، هه‌ردوو سوته‌مه‌نیه‌كه‌ به‌سوود ده‌بن و

and sustainable for our planet.
