How do you know?

Most likely, you looked at a tree or plant

لەوانەیە، سەیری درەخت و ڕووەکت کردبێت

and noticed details about its leaves

و سەرنجی وردەکاری گەڵاکانت دابێت

and assessed the qualities of sunlight streaming outside.

و کوالێتی تیشکی خۆرەکەی دەرەوەت هەڵسەنگاندبێت.

Observing the timing of biological events

تێبینیکردنی کاتی ڕووداوە زیندەوەریەکان

in relation to changes in season and climate

پەیوەندی بە گۆڕانکاریەکانی وەرز و كەش وهەواوە هەییە

is called "phenology".

ناسراوە بە"فینۆلۆجی"

When you notice the daffodil buds are poking through the snow

کاتێک تێبینی چرۆکانی نێرگزێک دەکەیت کە لەناو بەفرەکە دێنەدەرەوە

and think spring is on its way,

و هەست دەکەیت بەهار بەڕێوەییە،

you're using phenology.

ئەوکاتەش تۆ فینۆلۆجیت بەکارهێناوە.

When you see leaves turn from green to red,

کاتێک دەبینیت گەڵاکان ڕەنگیان لە سەوزەوە بۆ سور دەگۆڕێت

and watch migrating birds fly past,

و دەبینیت باڵندە کۆچەریەکان بە سەر سەرتەوە دەفڕن و کۆچ دەکەن،

and realize that summer is over, autumn is here,

و هەست دەکەیت هاوین کۆتای پێدێت، پایز بەڕێوەییە،

you're using phenology.

تۆ فینۆلۆجیت بەکارهێناوە.

Literally meaning, "the science of appearance",

بە تەواوەتی واتا: زانستی دەرکەوتن،"

phenology comes from the Greek words

وشەی فینۆلۆجی لە دوو وشەی یۆنانی وەرگیراوە

"pheno," to show or appear,

"فینۆ" واتا پیشاندان یان دەرکەوتن،

and "logos," to study.

و "لۆجس"واتا خوێندن.

Humans have relied on phenology

مرۆڤ پشتی بە فینۆلۆجی بەستووە

since the time of hunters and gatherers.

هەر لەسەردەمی ڕاوکەرەکان و دروێنەکەرەکان.

We've watched changes in seasons

چاودێری گۆڕانکاری وەرزەکانمان کردوە

to know when to plant and harvest food

تا بزانین کەی کاتی ڕووه‌ک ناشتنە و کاتی دوورینەوەییە

and when to track migrating animals.

و کەی شوێنی گیاندارە کۆچەریەکان بکەوین.

Scientists observe and document seasonal changes in nature

زاناکان تێبینیانکردوە و گۆڕانکاری وەرزی سروشتیان دیکۆمێنت کردوە

and look for patterns in the timing of seasonal events.

و بەدوای بنچینە بنەڕەتیەکانی کاتی ڕووداوە وەرزیەکان گەڕاون.

Timing of these natural signs has remained consistent until recently.

کاتی ئەم ئاماژە سروشتیانە تا ئەم دوایانە بە چەق بەستووی مابوونەوە.

Increasing global temperature is causing rhythms of nature to shift.

بەرزبوونەوەی پلەی گەرمی دەبێتە هۆی ئەوەی هاوسەنگیەکانی سروشت بگۆڕێن.

Bud burst, the day when a tree or plant's leaf or flower buds open,

چرۆ دەپشکوتێت، کاتێک درەخت و گەڵای ڕووەک یان گوڵ چرۆکانیان دەبنەوە،

is occurring earlier in the year for some species.

بۆ هەندێک جۆر لە ساڵەکه‌یا زۆر زوو ڕوودەدەن.

For every one degree Celsius rise in temperature,

بەهۆی بەرزبوونەوەی پلەی گەرمیەوە،

bud burst happens five days earlier than usual.

پێنج ڕۆژ زووتر لە کاتی ئاسایی چرۆ دەپشکوتێت.

Differences in timing affect not only plants,

جیاوازیەکانی کات تەنها کاریگەری لەسەر ڕووەکەکان ناکات، به‌ڵكو

but the insects and birds that depend on the plants for food.

کاریگەری لەو مێرو و باڵندانەی بۆ خۆراک پشت بە ڕووەکەکان دەبەستن دەکات.

For example, oak trees in the Arnhem Forest of the Netherlands

بۆ نموونە دار بەڕووەکان دارستانی ئارنهامی هۆڵندا

now experience bud burst ten days earlier,

ئێستا دە ڕۆژ زووتر چرۆ دەکه‌ن،

as compared to twenty years ago.

بە بەراورد بە ٢٠ ساڵ پێش ئێستا.

New oak leaves are a favorite food of winter moth caterpillars.

گەڵا نوێکانی دار بەڕو خۆراکی دڵخوازی کرمۆکەی زستانەن.

To survive, the caterpillars adapted

تا بەردەوامبن لە ژیان، کرۆمۆکە

to the change in the tree's timing,

لەگەڵ گۆڕانکاری کاتی دارەکە خۆی دەگونجێنێت،

and now hatch 15 days earlier than before.

و ئێستا ١٥ ڕۆژ زووتر لە کاتی ئاسایی بێچو هەڵدێنن.

Migrating pied flycatcher birds, however,

باڵندەی كۆچەری پاید فلایکاچەر، هەرچۆنێک بێت

aren't doing as well.

بەباشی لەگەڵ ئەم گۆڕانکاریانە ناگونجێت.

The birds prefer to feed their chicks winter moth caterpillars.

باڵندەکان حەزدەکەن کرمۆکەی زستانە بە جوجکەکانیان بدەن.

The caterpillars are now hatching earlier,

و ئێستاش کرمۆکەکان زووتر بەچکە هەڵدێنێت

but the birds' chicks are not.

بەڵام جوجکەی باڵندەکان هێشتا هەڵنەهاتووە.

This delay is costing the birds a food source.

ئەم دواخستنەش کاریگەری لەسەر سەرچاوەی خۆراکی باڵندەکان دەکات.

The pied flycatcher population has decreased

پاید فڵایکاچەر ژمارەیان کەمبۆتەوە

by up to 90% in some areas as a result.

Changes to a seemingly simple event,

leaves opening,

has ripple effects throughout a food web.

Earlier bloom times can also have an economic impact.

are blooming five days earlier than before.

Since the cherry trees are blooming earlier,

the blossoms also fade earlier,

و زووتریش کۆتاییان پێدێت،

frustrating thousands of tourists who visit

هەزارەها گەشتیار نائومێد دەکەن کەوا

for the Cherry Blossom Festival.

High school marching bands plan

all year to attend the parade

and perform, surrounded by a majestic white canopy.

How disappointing for them to find, well, trees

rather than the famous cherry blossoms!

Plants and animals react to changes in natural light and temperature.

Increasing temperatures cause plants to bloom earlier than before,

and become out of sync with the insects and birds in a food web.

و لەگەڵ مێرو و باڵندەکان لە زنجیرەی خۆراک هاودەم دەبن

So, the next time you look out your window

کەواتە، جاری داهاتوو لە پەنجەرەوە سەیری دەرەوەت کرد

and notice what season it is,

سەرنجی ئەوە بدە کە چ وەرزێکە،

you may be fooled by those blooming trees.

لەوانەیە لەلایەن ئەم خونچەی دارەکانەوە هەڵخەڕەتێندرابیتی.

Think of phenology,

بیرلە فینۆلۆجی بکەوە،

then think of how you can play a part to slow climate change.

پاشان بیرلەوە بکەوە چۆن دەتوانیت ڕۆڵێک بگێڕیت لە هێواشکردنەوەی گۆڕانی کەش وهەوا.
