Following threats from the communist governments of the Soviet Union and China,

"The senate forms a committee to investigate McCarthy’s claims.

McCarthy names his first case:

against prominent lawyer, judge, and activist Dorothy Kenyon.

He accuses her of membership to 28 organizations that are communist fronts.

I’m surprised you good legislators have agreed to move this hearing forward.

من سەرم سوڕماوە لە ئێوەی یاسادانەری باش کە ڕازیبوون بە ئەنجامدانی ئەم دادگاییکردنە.

You’re falling prey to a type of argument from ignorance:

ئێوە لە نەزانینتانەوە بوون بە نێچیری جۆرێک لە دەمەقاڵێ و شەڕەقسە:

assuming that a claim is true because it hasn’t been proven false.

وای دادەنێن کە بانگەشەیەک ڕاستە لەبەرئەوەی نەسەڵمێندراوە کە ناڕاستە.

The claim being Senator McCarthy’s accusations against Judge Kenyon,

ئەو بانگەشەیەی سیناتۆر مەکارثی کە بریتییە لە تۆمەتبارکردنی دادوەر کێنیەن،

for which he provided no legitimate evidence.

هیچ بەڵگەیەکی ڕەوا و یاسایی بۆ تۆمەتەکانی پێشکەش نەکردووە.

Is that right? I thought so.

Some of the so-called communist organizations he accused her of joining

don’t even exist.

هەر بوونیان نییە.

To assume a claim is true because it hasn’t been proven false

ئەگەر وای دابنێین کە بانگەشەیەک ڕاستە لەبەرئەوەی نەسەلمێندراوە کە ناڕاستە

ignores many other possibilities:

زۆرێک لە گریمانەکانی دیکەش پشتگوێ دەخرێن:

that it hasn’t been proven false yet, that it can’t be proven true or false,

کە هێشتا نەسەلمێندراوە کە ناڕاستە، هەروەها ناتواندرێت بسەلمێندرێت ڕاستە یان ناڕاستە،

or that it isn’t completely true or completely false, to name a few.

یان بەتەواوی ڕاست نییە یاخود بەتەواوی ناڕاستە، چەندین نمونەی تریش.

This leads to a handy rule of thumb:

ئەمەش سەردەکێشێت بۆ یاسای سودبەخشی تاقیکراوە و ئەزمونکراو:

the burden of proof lies with the person making the claim.

بەرپرسیاریەتی سەلماندنی تۆمەتەکان دەکەوێتە سەرشانی ئەو کەسەی کە بانگەشەکە دەکات.

In other words, you make the claim, you supply the proof.

بە واتایەکی تر، تۆ بانگەشەکە دەکەی، تۆ دەبیت بەڵگەکان پێشکەش بکەی.

If someone told you aliens exist,

ئەگەر کەسێک پێی وتی بوونەوەرە ئاسمانییەکان بوونیان هەیە،

would you head off to find proof that they don’t exist?

ئایا تۆ خۆت بەدووردەگری لەوەی بەڵگە بدۆزییەوە کە بوونیان نییە؟

Of course not.

بە دڵنیاییەوە نەخێر.

You’d tell that person to show you the UFO.

The same applies when someone makes a claim

هەمان شت جێبەجێ دەکرێت کاتێک کەسێک بانگەشەیەک دەکات

that contradicts an established consensus.

کە پێچەوانەی کۆدەنگییەکی جێگیر و هەمیشەیی بێت.

So when all the available evidence suggests

بۆیە کاتێک هەموو بەڵگە بەردەستەکان دەریدەخەن

that humans are causing an increase in global temperatures,

کە مرۆڤەکان هۆکاری زیادبوونی پلەی گەرمی گۆی زەوین،

the burden of proof has been fulfilled—

سەلماندنی ئەم بابەتە بە بەڵگەوە ئەنجامدراوە-

if you disagree, it becomes your responsibility to prove otherwise.

Ah, I’ve gotten ahead of myself.

Anyway, your legal system supposedly recognizes this rule—
