When I was learning Spanish

عندما كنت أتعلم الأسبانية

I managed to expand my vocabulary incredibly quickly

تمكنت من توسيع مفرداتي بشكل لا يصدق

and this is thanks to a method that I created for myself.

وهذا بأسلوب أنشأتها لنفسي

This method probably already exists

هذها الأسلوب ربما موجود بالفعل

but I identified my need and I created a solution.

ولكنني حددت حاجاتي وأنشأت حلا

I needed something that I could do

كنت بحاجة الى شيئ يمكن ان أفعله

bit by bit

شيئا فشيئا

day by day

يوما بعد يوم

And I'm gonna explain to you how you can do this method too

وسوف أشرح لك كيف يمكنك أن تفعل هذا الأسلوب أيضا

My method is going to help you train your brain

أسلوبي سوف يساعدك على تدريب دماغك

to start thinking in that second language

so, what's the first step?

اذا. ماهي الخطوة الأولى

Well, when you wake up in the morning

حسنا. عندما تستيقظ في الصباح

you somehow need to remind yourself

تحتاج بطريقة أو بأخرى لتذكير نفسك

that today I'm going to be searching for words that I don't already know.

أن اليوم سوف أبحث عن الكلمات التي لا أعرفها سابقا

Constantly!

باستمرار!

So whether you put a poster on your door

حتى اذا ماكنت وضعت ملصق على بابك

a post-it note on your fridge

مذكرة على الثلاجة

a reminder on your phone

تذكير على هاتفك

anything to remind you that today

اي شيئ لتذكيرك ان اليوم

new words!

So, from the minute you leave the house

لذلك,منذ مغادرتك للبيت

you need to be on the look out

تحتاج ان تكون منتبها

for words that you don't know

للكلمات التي لا تعرفها

Try to start thinking in the language that you're trying to learn

حاول ان تبدأ بالتفكير في اللغة التي تحول تعلمها

for me it's Spanish

في حالتي الاسبانية

So, I'm thinking in Spanish

لذلك افكر في الاسبانية

I see a pigeon

انا ارى حمامة

'paloma'

OK, I know that one

حسنا, اعرف ذلك

I see a bus stop

انا أرى موقف الباص

I'm not sure how to say that in Spanish

انا لست متأكدا انني اعرف ذلك بالأسبانية

so, I whip out my phone quickly

لذا, أذهب الى هاتفي بسرعة

write it down in English

اكتب ذلك بالإنجليزية

and then I forget about it

و أنسى ذلك

and I keep on doing that throughout the day

و أظل أقوم بذلك على مدار اليوم

So you're constantly on the look out

لذا, كن على اطلاع باستمرار

Do I know that in Spanish?

هل أعرف ذلك بالاسبانية

Yes I do. Left it.

نعم,اتركها

Do I know that in Spanish?

هل أعرف ذلك بالاسبانية

No, I don't. Write it down.

لا , اكتبه

You might end up with five words at the end of the day

قد ينتهي بك الأمر في نهاية اليوم بخمس كلمات

You might end up with twenty words

و قد ينتهي بعشرين كلمة

at the end of the day

في نهاية اليوم

it depends on your level, and also where you are

يعتمد ذلك على مستواك وأيضا أين انت

By doing this you are train your brain

بفعل هذا انت تمرن عقلك

to become accustomed to

ان تعتاد على

thinking about things in that second language

التفكير في الاشياء في اللغة الثانية

and it will help you towards fluency

و سوف يساعدك في الطلاقة

Then, you're also creating a list

ثم , تنشئ قائمة

on your phone

في هاتفك

of all the things that you've seen throughout the day

من كل الاشيائ التي رأيتها طوال اليوم

that you don't know how to say

التي لا تعرف كيف تقولها

Now the important part of this

الآن اهم جزء في هذا

comes when you arrive home in the evening.

يأتي عند وصولك الى المنزل في المساء

So when you get home from work

لذا , عندما تعود الى المنزل من العمل

or university that day

او الجامعة في هذا اليوم

you need to dedicate a couple of minutes

تحتاج لتكريس بضع دقائق

to creating a word diary

لتنشأ مذكرة

I use a notepad for this because

انا استخدم المفكرة لهذا,ل

I like to use use two pages per day

أنني احب استخدام صفحتين في اليوم

so, I write the date

اذا, سأكتب التاريخ

I write a short sentence about what I did that day

اكتب جملة قصيرة حول ما فعلته في هذا اليوم

And then I go ahead and I look

وبعد ذلك اذهب مباشرة وألقي نظرة

at the words that I didn't know today

على الكلمات التي لم أكن أعرفها اليوم

on my phone and I add them into my diary

في هاتفي و اضيفهم الى المفكرة

so...

لذا......

So the words I saw today were;

لذا ,الكلمة التي رأيتها اليوم كانت

pigeon, litter, bus stop, jeweller's and skyscraper

حمامة, تعبير,موقف الباص, مجوهرات و ناطحة سحاب

and I don't know how to say those in Spanish

و لم اكن اعرف كيف اقول تلك الكلمات في الاسبانية

So I move on to the next page

لذا, انتقل الى الصفحة التالية

And I go and search them on the internet

وابحث عنها في الانترنت

So the first word was pigeon

اذا, الكلمة الاولى كانت ''حمامة''

So I get my computer

اذهب الى حاسوبي

I use a website like 'WordReference'

استخدم موقع ك"WordRefereence"

I search 'pigeon'

ابحث عن "حمامة"

and I listen to the pronunciation

واستمع الى النطق

'paloma'

great, 'paloma'

عظيم..

and then I add that to my word diary

وبعد ذلك اضيف ذلك الى مفكرتي

one of my words was 'skyscraper'

احد كلماتي كانت"ناطحة سحاب"

that I didn't know

التي لم اكن اعرفها

so I use 'WordReference' to search for 'skyscraper'

لذا, سأستخدم موقع 'WordRefereence' للبحث عن"ناطحة سحاب"

and then I listen to the pronunciation

بعد ذلك استمع للنطق

'rascacielos'

'Rascacielos' ok, and I add that to my word diary

حسنا,سأضيف ذلك الى مفكرتي

'rascacielos'

great! And then I just keep on doing that

عظيم! بعد ذلك أحافظ على القيام بذلك

Untill my list is full!

الى ان تمتلأ القائمة

and then I have a definitive list

ثم تكون لدي قائمة نهائية

of all the new vocabulary

بكل المفردات الجديدة

that i saw today

التي رأيتها اليوم

So ideally you need to do this diary every day

لذا,من الناحية المثالية تحتاج بالقيام بتلك اليوميات كل يوم

Make it a part of your life

اجعله جزءا من حياتك

and a part of your routine

وجزءا من روتينك

So what you're actually doing by following this process

لذلك,ماتفعله فليا باتباعك هذه العملية

and this method is

وهذه الأسلوب

you're training your brain

تقوم بتمرين عقلك

to be constantly looking and confirming

ان تبحث باستمرار وتتأكد ا

that it knows words in that second language

ان الكلمات المعروفة في اللغة الثانية

and immediately

و فورا

when it doesn't know

عندما لاتعرف

alert! you write that word down

حزر! انت تكتب تلك الكلمة

and then you know that you're going to search for it later.

ومن ثم تعرف انك ستبحث عنه لاحقا

It's really interesting to look back through

انه مثير لاهتمام ان تنظر الى الوراء من خلال

your word diary after months of doing this process

مفكراتك بعد اشهر من القيام بهذه العملية

because you see words and you just think

لانك ترى الكلمات وفقط تفكر

'Oh my god, I can't believe I didn't know how to say that!'

يالله, لا استطيع التصديق لم اكن اعرف كيف اقول ذلك

When you wake up the next morning

عندما تستيقظ الصباح التالي

after having completed your diary the night before

بعد ان اكملت مذكراتك في الليلة السابقة

You'll immediately see

عليك فورا ان ترى

skyscraper = rascacielos

ناطحة سحاب = rascacielos

pigeon = paloma

حمامة=paloma

You just are constantly, it's there, it's in your mind.

انت فقط مستمر,انها هناك,انها في عقلك

Once you've trained your brain to think and process in this way

مرة واحدة كنت قد دربت عقلك على التفكير و العمل بهذه الطريقة

it's going to be so much easier to pick up vocabulary

سوف يكون اسهل بكثير للالتقاط المفردات

and also to identify where your vocabulary is lacking!

وا ايضا لتحديد اين تتسرب ممفرداتك!

For many of you, this might not work!
