Menstruation.

ဓမ္မတာလာခြင်း

A simple word describing a natural biological process,

သဘာဝအရ ဇီဝဗေဒဖြစ်စဉ်ကို ပြောပြတဲ့ ရိုးစင်းတဲ့ စကားလုံး

weighed down by centuries of stigma,

ရာစုနှစ်များစွာ နှိမ့်ချမှုကြောင့် နိမ့်ကျခဲ့ရပြီး

has been transformed into something most of us can only speak about

ကိုယ်တွေအတွက် တိုးတိုးတိတ်တိတ် ဖြေရှင်းရမယ့် ကိစ္စတစ်ခုလို့

in whispers.

But why?

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဘာလို့လဲ။

As I speak to you right now,

အခု ကျွန်မပြောသလိုပါပဲ။

more than 800 million women around the world

တစ်ကမ္ဘာလုံးက သန်း ၈၀၀ ကျော်သော အမျိုးသမီးတွေက

are having a period.

ဓမ္မတာလာကြပါတယ်။

None of us would exist without it,

ဒါမရှိဘဲနဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့ ဖြစ်မလာတော့ဘူးလေ။

and yet it remains an "embarrassing" subject to broach.

အဲ့လိုပဲ အဲ့တာက "ရှက်စရာကိစ္စကြီး" တစ်ခုလို ကြီးကျယ်နေဆဲပဲ။

From my experience and that of the women around me,

ကျွန်မနဲ့ ဘေးနားမှာရှိတဲ့ အမျိုးသမီးတွေ အတွေ့အကြုံအရ

I can tell you that it's exhausting.

ဒါက အတော်လေး ပင်ပန်းရတယ်လို့ ဆိုနိုင်ပါတယ်။

It's exhausting to carefully take out a brown paper bag hiding a pad,

လစဉ်သုံးပစ္စည်ကို စက္ကူအညိုနဲ့ ထုပ်ပြီး သေချာသယ်လာရတာတွေ၊ အဲဒါကို

stuffing it into your pocket in the middle of a class

အိတ်ကပ်ထဲ သိုသိုသိပ်သိပ်ထည့်ပြီး အခန်းထဲ ထည့်လာရတာတွေ

and rushing to the washroom as discreetly as possible.

သန့်စင်ခန်းထဲကို အပြေးဝင်၊ တက်နိုင်သမျှ ဖုံးဖိပြီး သုံးရတာတွေက ပင်ပန်းပါတယ်။

It's exhausting to sit through lessons and meetings

ကိုယ်တွင်းမှာတော့ ရာသီကိုက်ခဲမှုတွေနဲ့ အော်ပွဲဆင်နေရချိန်

pretending to be absolutely normal,

အစည်းအဝေးတွေ၊ စာသင်ခန်းတွေမှာ ပုံမှန်လို

while internally crying out from intense period cramps.

ဟန်ဆောင်ပြီး ထိုင်နေရတာ ပင်ပန်းပါတယ်။

It's exhausting to be dismissively told that you’re PMSing

မလာမီ စိတ်ပုံစံမမှန်တာနဲ့ ကိုက်ခဲနေတာ၊ လာစဉ်ကိုက်ခဲနေတာကို ပြောပြဖို့

or suffering from "that time of the month,"

မသင့်မတော်သလို ဖြစ်နေတာမျိုးက ပင်ပန်းရပါတယ်။

and it's exhausting to continuously fight back against age-old traditions

ပြီးတော့ ခေတ်ဟောင်း ထုံးတမ်းတွေဖြစ်တဲ့ ရာသီလာနေစဉ် အေးရာအေးကြောင်းနေရပြီး၊

that ask you not to pray,

ဆုတောင်းလို့ မရ၊

visit temples, cook, touch pickle and the list goes on and on,

စေတီထဲ ဝင်လို့မရ၊ ချက်ပြုတ်လို့မရ၊ အချဉ်ရည်ကို ထိလို့မရတာကစပြီး

while you're just trying to bleed and be left in peace.

စာရင်းနဲ့ ချီတဲ့ဟာတွေကို တွန်းလှန်ရတာတွေက ပင်ပန်းပါတယ်။

But you know what the worst part is?

ဒါပေမဲ့ အဆိုးဆုံးက ဘာလဲသိလား။

The worst part is that the things that seem tiring to us

အဆိုးဆုံးကဘာလဲဆိုတော့ အဲလိုပင်ပန်းရတာတွေက

are merely the tip of the iceberg,

တကယ့်ကို အပေါ်ယံလေးပဲ ရှိသေးတယ်။

because we in this room are privileged enough

ဘာလို့ဆိုတော့ ဒီအခန်းမှာရှိတဲ့ သူတွေက သန့်ရှင်းတဲ့

to be able to afford sanitary napkins every month,

လစဉ်သုံးပစ္စည်းတွေ ဝယ်ခြမ်းနိုင်၊ တခုခုဖြစ်လာရင်

to be able to visit a gynecologist in case of any problem,

သားဖွားမီးယပ်နဲ့ ပြနိုင်ပြီး လတိုင်း ဘယ်ဟာက ပုံမှန်ဖြစ်မဖြစ်

to be able to tell what's normal and abnormal with our monthly cycle.

ပြောနိုင်ဆိုနိုင်ကြတဲ့ အခွင့်ထူးကို ရရှိထားကြသူတွေပါ။

We have access to water, sanitation and toilets

မိမိလုံခြုံစိတ်ချမှုနဲ့ ကျန်းမာသန့်ရှင်းမှုကို ထိန်းသိမ်းဖို့

that help us maintain our privacy and hygiene.

ရေ၊ သန့်ရှင်းတဲ့အမှိုက်စနစ်နဲ့ သန့်စင်ခန်းတွေ ရထားတယ်။

But what about those who don't?

ဒါပေမဲ့ မရတဲ့သူတွေအတွက် ဘယ်လိုလုပ်ကြမလဲ။

What about 335 million girls around the world

လက်ဆေးဖို့ရေနဲ့ ဆပ်ပြာ မရရှိကြတဲ့

who go to school without even having access to water and soap

to wash their hands?

What about 15-year-old schoolgirls in Kenya

လစဉ်သုံးပစ္စည်းဝယ်နိုင်ဖို့အရေး သူတို့ခန္ဓာကိုယ်ကို ရင်းနှီးရတဲ့

who have to sell their bodies to be able to buy sanitary napkins?

What about two-thirds of rural high school girls in India

အပျိုဖော် စစဝင်တဲ့အချိန် သူတို့ ခန္ဓာကိုယ်မှာ ဘာဖြစ်နေလဲဆိုတာတောင်

who don't even understand what their bodies are going through

And right now, we are all gathered here in the USA.

So what about 64 percent of women in St. Louis, Missouri,

who weren't able to afford menstrual hygiene supplies

ဝယ်နိုင်ခြင်း မရှိတဲ့ ၆၄% သော အမျိုးသမီးတွေ

in the previous year?

What about the struggles of homeless, transgender,

ဓမ္မတာလာတဲ့ အိမ်မဲ့ရာမဲ့တွေ၊ လိင်ပြောင်းထားသူတွေ၊

intersex and displaced people

ဒွိလိင်တွေနဲ့ ရွေ့ပြောင်းဒုက္ခသည်တွေ

What about them?

သူတို့အတွက် ဘာလုပ်ကြမလဲ။

The scale of the problem,

ဓမ္မတာအပေါ် အရိုးစွဲနေတဲ့

stemming in part from the deep-rooted stigma attached to menstruation,

နှိမ့်ချဆက်ဆံခြင်းတွေနဲ့ တည်မြဲနေတဲ့ ဒီပြဿနာရဲ့ အတိုင်းအဆဟာ

is unimaginable.

ပုံဖော်ကြည့်လို့တောင် မရနိုင်ပါဘူး။

And the desire to voice this frustration

ဒီစိတ်ပျက်စရာတွေကို လူတွေ သိလာစေဖို့ ဖြစ်လာစေတာက

led me, along with three other teammates,

ကျွန်မနဲ့ ကျန်အဖွဲ့ဝင် ၃ ယောက်ကနေ ပြောင်းလဲမှုတွေ

to initiate a campaign that calls for change,

စတင်ဖို့၊ ဓမ္မတာနဲ့ ပတ်သတ်တဲ့ အရပ်ပြောတွေကို မေးခွန်းထုတ်ဖို့နဲ့

questions the taboos surrounding menstruation

ဓမ္မတာနဲ့ ပတ်သတ်ပြီး အကောင်းမြင်ကြရေး ပျံ့နှံ့စေဖို့

and spreads period positivity.

စည်းရုံးလှုံ့ဆော်ရေးတစ်ခုကို စတင်ခဲ့တယ်။

The name of our campaign, "Pravahkriti,"

စည်းရုံးလှုံ့ဆော်ရေး နာမည်က "ပရာဟခရစ်တီ"

was born from the message that we want to convey to the world.

ဒါက တစ်ကမ္ဘာလုံးကို ဖော်ပြပေးချင်တဲ့ အသိတရားကနေ ဖြစ်လာတာပါ။

"Pravah" means "flow,"

"ပရာဟ" က "စီးဆင်းတာ"

and "kriti" means "a beautiful creation."

"ခရစ်တီ" က "လှပသော ဖန်ဆင်းမှုတစ်ခု"

Because how could the monthly cycle that ultimately gives rise to all creation

ဘာလို့ဆိုတော့ ဒီလစဉ်ရာသီ စက်ဝန်းလောက် လှပတဲ့ ဖန်ဆင်းမှုမျိုး

be anything less than beautiful?

အကောင်းဆုံး ပေးနိုင်တဲ့ တခြားအရာ ဘယ်ရှိနိုင်မှာလဲ။

Now, as a social issue, menstruation has several facets to it

အခု လူမှုရေးပြဿနာ တစ်ခုအနေနဲ့ ဓမ္မတာ လာတာက အခြေအနေကို တစ်ခုကိုတစ်ခု

that overlap, reinforce and worsen the situation.

ထပ်နေ၊ ပံ့ပိုးနေ၊ ပိုဆိုးနေအောင် လုပ်တဲ့ ရှုထောင့်တွေတော်တော်လေး ရှိလာတယ်။

So we based our campaign on four fundamental pillars:

ဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့က အဓိက မဏ္ဏိုင်ကြီး ၄ ခု ထားပြီး လှုံ့ဆော်ရေးကို စတင်ခဲ့တယ်။

health, hygiene, awareness and spreading positivity.

ကျန်းမာရေး၊ သန့်ရှင်းသပ်ရပ်ရေး၊ အသိပညာနဲ့ အကောင်းမြင်စိတ် ပြန့်နှံ့ရေး တို့ပါ။

But how did we actually implement this?

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒါကို ဘယ်လိုလက်တွေ့ အကောင်ထည် ဖော်ခဲ့ကြသလဲ။

Well, we started within the walls of our school classroom.

ဒီလိုပါ။ ကျောင်းစာသင်ခန်းတွေရဲ့ နံရံတွေကြားကနေ စတင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

Instead of simply explaining menstruation to children

ဖတ်စာအုပ် သို့မဟုတ် ဇီဝဗေဒ ရှုထောင့်ကနေ ကလေးတွေကို

from a textbook or biological standpoint,

လွယ်လွယ်လေးပဲ ရှင်းပြလိုက်မဲ့အစား

we adopted an innovative approach.

ဆန်းသစ်တဲ့ နည်းတစ်ခုနဲ့ ချဉ်းကပ်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

We conducted an activity where students strung together a bracelet

ကျွန်မတို့က ကျောင်းသားတွေကို အတူတူ ရပ်စေပြီး ပုတီးစေ့ ၂၈ စေ့ပါတဲ့

consisting of 28 beads signifying the length of the menstrual cycle,

လက်ပတ်လေးကို ပေးထားတယ်။ အဲ့တာက ဓမ္မတာ စက်ဝန်းကို ပြောချင်တာ၊

out of which four to seven beads were of a different color,

အဲဒီထဲမှာမှ ၄ လုံးကနေ ၇ လုံးအထိက တခြားအရောင်။

demonstrating the days a woman bleeds.

ပြောချင်တာက ဓမ္မလာတဲ့ ရက်တွေပေါ့။

And in this way, we not only explained what periods are

အဲ့လိုနည်းနဲ့ကြတော့ ဓမ္မတာဆိုတာ ဘာလဲဆိုပြီး ရှင်းပြရုံတင်

in a manner that was educational

မဟုတ်တော့ဘဲ ပညာပေးတဲ့ အဆင့်အထိ

but also approachable and engaging.

သူတို့ကိုယ်တိုင်ပါ လွယ်ကူစွာ ပါဝင်လာနိုင်တယ်။

To offer another example,

နောက်ဥပမာ တစ်ခုကတော့

we explored various ways of alleviating cramps,

နာကျင်ကိုက်ခဲမှုတွေကို လျှော့ချနိုင်တဲ့ နည်းလမ်းတွေ ရှာဖွေပေးတယ်။

including preparing some natural remedies in school itself.

ကျောင်းထဲမှာတင် သဘာဝကုထုံးတွေ ပြင်ဆင် ပေးထားတာမျိုးတွေလည်း အပါအဝင်ပဲ။

And we didn't just stop at involving girls in our campaign.

ပြီးတော့ လှုံဆော်ရေးတွေမှာ မိန်းကလေးတွေကို ပါဝင်လာဖို့ မပိတ်ပင်ခဲ့ဘူး။

In fact, boys were equally involved,

တကယ်ဆို ယောကျ်ားလေးတွေလည်း တန်းတူပါဝင်ကြပါတယ်။

and one of our co-team members,

တွေ့တဲ့အတိုင်းပါပဲ။

as you saw,

အဖွဲ့ဝင်တွေထဲက တစ်ယောက်က

is also a boy.

Through internal conversations

ကိုယ့်အချင်းချင်း ဝိုင်းဖွဲ့ပြောကြရင်

where girls could freely share their personal experiences

မိန်းကလေးတွေက သူတို့ရဲ့ အတွေ့အကြုံတွေကို လွတ်လပ်စွာ ပြောဆိုနိုင်ပြီး

and boys could just ask questions, no matter how "dumb" they might seem,

ယောက်ျားလေးတွေက သူတို့ကို ပိန်းတယ် ထင်ချင် ထင်ပါစေ၊ မသိတာ မှန်သမျှကို မေးနိုင်ကြတယ်။

our male volunteers quickly got over their awkwardness,

not just supporting but also leading educational sessions.

Clearly, starting an inclusive conversation,

including members of all genders

and listening to and supporting each other,

can go a long way.

Now, to make our campaign successful, we conducted extensive research,

လှုံ့ဆော်ရေး အောင်မြင်လာဖို့ အတွက်ကို သုသေတနတွေ ကျယ်ကျယ်ပြန့်ပြန့် လုပ်လာတယ်။

interviewed gynecologists,

surveyed people to gauge public opinion on periods

and conducted a panel discussion with professionals working in this field.

And then we undertook the journey to create change.

We organized a stall at Shilpotsav, a local fair,

where we distributed sanitary napkin-shaped envelopes

and bookmarks containing period-positive messages.

We donated hundreds of pads that we had collected

through a pad donation drive at school.

Interacting with young girls in government and charitable schools,

အစိုးရနဲ့ ပရဟိတကျောင်းတွေမှာ မိန်းကလေးတွေနဲ့ အတူတူလုပ်ကိုင်ရင်း

we explained periods to them through a game of hopscotch

ခြေတစ်ပေါင်ကျိုးဆော့ရင်း ရာသီအကြောင်းကို ရှင်းပြတယ်။

and distributed period kits that we had made ourselves

ပြီးတော့ ကိုယ့်ဘာသာပဲ လုပ်ထားတဲ့ ရာသီနဲ့ဆိုင်တဲ့ ပစ္စည်းလေးတွေကို

that consisted of a pad and other items like a paper soap

ဝေပေးတယ်။ အထဲမှာ လစဉ်သုံးပစ္စည်း၊ ဆပ်ပြာစက္ကူ၊

and sanitizer for maintaining hygiene,

သန်ရှင်းရေးအတွက် လက်သန့်ဆေးရည်၊

a piece of dark chocolate just to lift their mood,

စိတ်တည်ငြိမ်ဖို့ ချောကလက်အညိုနဲ့

a sachet of ginger tea and so on.

တစ်ခါသောက်စာ ချင်းလက်ဖက်ထုပ် စတာတို့ပါတယ်။

In whatever we did, we strived to think beyond the norm and break barriers,

ဘာပဲလုပ်လုပ် ကျွန်မတို့က အရပ်ပြောတွေ၊ အခက်ခဲတွေကို ကျော်လွှားဖို့ အတော်စဉ်းစား

be it by creating a physical period tracker

ရပါတယ်။ အံဒါက ဓမ္မတာ စက်ဝန်းကို မှတ်သားနိုင်တဲ့

to help girls without access to the internet

မှတ်တမ်းပစ္စည်းကို ဖန်တီးပြီး မိန်းကလေးတွေက အင်တာနက်

to record their monthly cycle,

မလိုဘဲ သူတို့ဓမ္မတာ စက်ဝန်းကို မှတ်သားနိုင်ပြီ။

or sensitizing the masses by performing street plays,

လူထုကို လမ်းတွေမှာ ပြဇာတ်ကပြပြီး လက်တွေဆေးပေးကြတယ်။

or even developing a video game called "Crimson Crusade" --

that introduces both boys and girls

and players progress in the game

by defeating menstrual monsters.

ဓမ္မတာလူဆိုးကြီးကို နိုင်အောင် တိုက်ရတာ မျိုးပါ။

To sustain this effort,

ဒီကြိုးစားမှုကိုထိန်းသိမ်းဖို့

we've installed 10 sanitary napkin dispensers in several schools.

ကျောင်းတော်တော်များများမှာ လစဉ်သုံးပစ္စည်း တွေထုတ်ပေးတဲ့စက် ၁၀ ခု ထားထားပေးတယ်။

Gradually, people's mindsets are changing.

တဖြည်းဖြည်းနဲ့ လူတွေရဲ့ အတွေးအခေါ်တွေ ပြောင်းလဲလာတယ်။

But does change come so easily?

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီပြောင်းလဲမှုက လွယ်လွယ်နဲ့ ရခဲ့တာလား။

At a school for the underprivileged,

အခြေခံ လူတန်းစားတွေအတွက်

we encountered a girl who had just got her first period

ကျောင်းတစ်ကျောင်းဆို ရာသီပထမဆုံးရက်မှာ ရာသီသွေး စုပ်ယူဖို့

but wasn't wearing anything to absorb the flow.

ဘာမှမဝတ်ထားတဲ့ ကျောင်းသူကို ဝတ်ဖို့ တိုက်တွန်းခဲ့တယ်။

Imagine being her,

သူ့အဖြစ်ကို တွေးကြည့်ပါ။

sitting in class feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable,

အတန်းထဲမှာ ထိုင်နေတာ မသက်မသာနဲ့ အောက်ကို ကြည့်လိုက်ရင်

looking down and seeing red,

asking your parents for help, asking what was going on with you

and being dismissed.

Imagine the shame, fear and embarrassment for being "caught" doing something wrong

သူ့ကျန်းမာရေး၊ ဂုဏ်သိက္ခာအတွက်နဲ့ မသိကျိုးကျွံပြုခံ၊ တိတ်ဆိတ်ခံ နေနေရတာကို

that forces you into living in ignorance and silence

at the cost of your health and dignity.

While we do our part, our endeavors will only be successful

if each one of you internalizes and spreads onward
