One of the scariest moments of my career

I feared that I would be forced to choose between motherhood

I feared that the career I worked so hard to build

would disappear just like that.

You think I'm exaggerating, right?

How could a six-time Olympic champion, a 16-time world champion,

a world record holder,

Well, I'm not exaggerating.

Getting pregnant in track and field has been called the “kiss of death.”

And it comes with a lot of fear,

just like for women in many professions.

I have been watching women that I respect

and teammates of mine hide pregnancies

I've seen women have to make gut-wrenching decisions

like deciding whether to recover their health

Deciding whether to stay in the hospital with a sick child or go to a race

so that they don't receive a further pay reduction.

အလျှော့မခံရအောင် အပြေးပြိုင်ပွဲကို သွားမလား ဆုံးဖြတ်တာပါ။

I know what some of you might be thinking.

တချို့ ဘယ်လို တွေးနေမယ်ဆိုတာ ကျွန်မ သိတယ်။

We all choose to get pregnant, right?

အားလုံကး ကိုယ်ဝန်ယူဖို့ ရွေးတယ်၊ မဟုတ်လား။

If a sponsor doesn't want to pay an athlete

who's not out on the track winning,

that's just part of the deal, right?

Well, I think the deal's rigged.

I think that companies want to have it both ways.

And I think it's time we change.

Sports companies love to tell women that they can have it all.

We've all seen those inspirational ads.

I remember meeting with Nike leadership in 2010,

and they told me about an initiative they sponsored called the Girl Effect.

They promoted adolescent girls as the key to improving societies

around the globe.

And if I joined Nike,

I could empower them.

And I believed that.

Girls come from somewhere.

And women having babies during childrearing years

is something that should be celebrated, not punished.

အပြစ်မပေးဘဲ ဂုဏ်ပြုသင့်တဲ့အရာလေ။

It should be a part of a normal, thriving, professional, athletic career.

ဒါက သာမန်၊ တိုးတက်၊ ကျွမ်းကျင်၊ အားကစား သက်မွေးအလုပ်ရဲ့ အပိုင်းတစ်ခု ဖြစ်သင့်တယ်။

And women in all fields should never feel the need

to hide a pregnancy, at 4am, in the dark,

so that they won't be photographed doing that thing that they love.

Remember how scared I told you I was when I was on the track that day?

My mind was racing with the consequences of my decision to start a family.

I had already been going through

and they were already offering me 70 percent less

than what I had previously been making.

And that was even before they knew about the baby.

Don't even get me started with the ageism

that is embedded in the capitalist dream.

So when I told them about my pregnancy,

I asked for a clause in the contract

that specified they wouldn't reduce my pay

within 12 months of giving birth.

They said yes.

But -- you knew there was going to be a "but", right?

But it was only a yes for me.

They weren't ready to set the precedent.

A couple of days later, my agent called me.

Nike wanted to use me in a commercial for the Women's World Cup.

I couldn't believe it.

and I wasn't the only one.

I didn't resign with Nike, and I'm here to tell the tale.

But more than that,

I went on to find a new sponsor

in the female-led, female-focused Athleta,

and they helped me --

Together, we raised 200,000 dollars

and these children don't disappear when the races begin.

I made it back to the Olympics two years after giving birth.

I won a gold and a bronze.

I remember crossing that line in Tokyo and having such a sense of fulfillment.

I looked down at my feet

Because I was tired of not being valued or able to show up fully as myself.

I learned that my voice has power,

နောက်ဆုံးတော့ ရလဒ်တွေက ကျွန်မတို့အားလုံး ကို သက်ရောက်တဲ့အတွက် ဒီဆုံးဖြတ်ချက်တွေ

because the results affect us all.

မချနေဘူးလို့ ဟန်ဆောင်တာကို ရပ်လိုက်ရတယ်။

Not just women, but men and our children, too.

အမျိုးသမီးတွေသာမက အမျိုးသားတွေနဲ့ ကလေးတွေရောပေါ့။

By creating the environment that we all live, work,

အားလုံး နေထိုင်၊အလုပ်လုပ်၊ ချစ်ခင်ပြီး မိသားစုတွေကို

love and raise our families in.

ပျိုးထောင်တဲ့ ဝန်းကျင်ကို ဖန်တီးတာက၊

Isn't it past time that we call out the hypocrisy

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ အရေခြုံမှုကို စိန်ခေါပြီး သာမန် အသစ်ကို ဖန်တီးဖို့

and create a new normal?

အားလပ်ချိန်မဟုတ်ဘူးလား။

One with real generosity, humanity and truth at the center,

ဗဟိုချက်မှာ တကယ့်ရက်ရောမှု၊ လူသားတွေနဲ့ အမှန်တရားတွေရှိတဲ့သူတွေဟာ

not some misplaced sense of what business is or does.

လုပ်ငန်းတို့၊ ဘာတို့ လုပ်တာက လွဲမှားနေတဲ့ သဘောမဟုတ်ဘူး။

We should say what we will tolerate.

ကျွန်ုမတို့ဟာ ဘာကို သည်းခံမယ်လို့ ပြောသင့်တယ်။

And as we all recover from the pandemic that has flattened us,

ကျွန်မတို့ကို ချေဖျက်ခဲ့တဲ့ ကူးစက်ရောဂါကနေ အားလုံး ပြန်နာလန်ထူလာတာကြောင့်

let's just not rebuild the same version of the broken system that we had before.

ကျွန်မတို့ အရင်က ရှိခဲ့တဲ့ ကျိုးပဲ့နေတဲ့ စနစ်ရဲ့ ပုံစံတူကို ပြန်မတည်ဆောက်ကြရအောင်။

But let's learn and create something new.

ဒါပေမဲ့ အသစ်တစ်ခုခုကို သင်ယူပြီး ဖန်တီးကြပါစို့။

Each one of us has a role to play.

ကျွန်မတို့တစ်ယောက်စီမှာ ပါဝင်ရမယ့် အခန်းကဏ္ဍရှိတယ်။

And you don’t have to be an Olympian

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် ဒါမှမဟုတ်

to create change for yourself or for others.

တခြားသူတွေအတွက် ပြောင်းလဲမှု ဖန်တီးဖို့ အိုလံပစ်သမား ဖြစ်စရာမလိုဘူး။

Everyone in this room can bet on themselves.

ဒီအခန်းထဲက လူတိုင်း ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် လောင်းကြေးထပ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

It will typically happen in moments of fear

အများအားဖြင့် ရှေ့ဆက်သွားတဲ့ လမ်းကို မမြင်ရတဲ့အခါ

when you don't see the path forward.

ကြောက်ရွံ့တဲ့ အခိုက်အတန့်တွေမှာ ဖြစ်ပျက်လာမှာပါ။

In my own experience, it was a terrifying decision,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ကိုယ်ပိုင်အတွေ့အကြုံအရ ကြောက်စရာ ဆုံးဖြတ်ချက်တစ်ခုဖြစ်ပေမဲ့

but that will be your first clue.

ဒါက သင်တို့ရဲ့ ပထမဆုံး သဲလွန်စဖြစ်မှာပါ။

That feeling of being terrified is your invitation to create change.

ထိတ်လန့်နေတဲ့ အဲဒီခံစားချက်က ပြောင်းလဲမှု ဖန်တီးဖို့ သင့်ဖိတ်ခေါ်မှုပါ။

You have to acknowledge those feelings,

ဒီခံစားချက်တွေကို အသိအမှတ်ပြုရမယ်။

you have to brave them, and you have to fight to move forward.

သတ္တိရှိရမယ်။ ရှေ့ဆက်ဖို့ တိုက်ပွဲဝင်ရမယ်။

It won't be easy.

လွယ်ကူမှာတော့မဟုတ်ဘူး။

You will be afraid.

သင် ကြောက်လိမ့်မယ်။

Your voice will shake.

သင့်ရဲ့အသံက တုန်လှုပ်နေလိမ့်မယ်။

But what I can absolutely promise you

ဒါပေမဲ့ သင့်ကိုယ်သင် လုံးဝ ကတိပေးနိုင်တာက

is that it will be worth it.

ဒါက ထိုက်တန်တယ်ဆိုတာပါ။
