One of the scariest moments of my career

But on this day,

a special type of fear brought me out at 4am before the sun.

A fear that someone might discover a secret I'd been keeping.

제가 숨겨온 비밀이 탄로 날지 모른다는 두려움이었어요.

I was six months pregnant.

저는 당시 임신 6개월이었습니다.

I was pregnant, and I was scared enough to train in the dark

임신한 몸으로 어둠 속에서 훈련 할 만큼 두려웠죠.

so that no one would see the life that was growing inside of me.

아무도 제 안에 자라는 생명을 보지 못하게요.

I feared that if a fan or someone posted a photo,

팬이나 다른 누군가가 사진이라도 찍어 올리면

that my sponsor would immediately change their mind

제 후원사와 계약이 틀어질까

about wanting to work with me.

걱정스러웠죠.

I feared that I would be forced to choose between motherhood

엄마가 되는 것과 프로 선수로 사는 것

and being a competitive athlete.

둘 중 하나를 버려야 하는 상황이 올까 두려웠고

I feared that the career I worked so hard to build

그렇게 공을 들여 이뤄낸 선수 경력이

would disappear just like that.

순식간에 물거품이 될까 봐 두려웠어요.

You think I'm exaggerating, right?

제가 과장해 말하는 것 같죠?

How could a six-time Olympic champion, a 16-time world champion,

올림픽에서 6개 메달에 세계선수권대회에서 16개 메달을 따고

a world record holder,

세계 기록까지 깬 선수가

possibly think that her career might be over by doing something

출산처럼 자연스러운 일로 자신의 경력이 끝날지도 모른다고

as natural as having a baby?

생각 할 수 있을까요?

Well, I'm not exaggerating.

과장이 아닙니다.

Getting pregnant in track and field has been called the “kiss of death.”

육상 경기 선수가 임신하는 것은 죽음의 입맞춤이라 불립니다.

And it comes with a lot of fear,

두려워할 일도 많죠.

just like for women in many professions.

다른 여러 분야의 여성들도 마찬가지겠죠.

I have been watching women that I respect

팀원들이나 제가 존경하는 여성들이

and teammates of mine hide pregnancies

자신의 임신 사실을 숨기는 것을

since I was 19 years old.

19살 때부터 봐 왔습니다.

I've seen women have to make gut-wrenching decisions

가슴이 미어지는 결정을 여성들이 해야는 걸 봤어요.

like deciding whether to recover their health

예를 들면, 건강을 먼저 회복해야 할지

or return to the sport.

계속 선수 생활을 해야 할지

Deciding whether to stay in the hospital with a sick child or go to a race

아픈 아이와 병원에 같이 있어야 할지

so that they don't receive a further pay reduction.

후원금이 삭감 되지 않게 그냥 경기에 나갈지

I know what some of you might be thinking.

여러분 중 몇분은 이런 생각을 하시겠죠.

We all choose to get pregnant, right?

임신은 우리의 선택이지 않은가?

If a sponsor doesn't want to pay an athlete

스폰서 입장에서

who's not out on the track winning,

출전 안 하고 메달을 못 따는 선수에게 후원금을 주고 싶지 않다면

that's just part of the deal, right?

계약의 당연한 부분 아닌가?

Well, I think the deal's rigged.

저는 계약이 불공정하게 조작된 거라 생각합니다.

I think that companies want to have it both ways.

제 생각엔 후원사들이 두 마리 토끼를 다 잡으려한다고 봅니다.

And I think it's time we change.

이제 바꿀 때가 되었어요.

Sports companies love to tell women that they can have it all.

스포츠 회사는 툭하면 여성들에게 모든 걸 다 가질 수 있다고 말하죠.

They can do it all, they can be it all.

뭐든 할 수 있고, 뭐든 될 수 있다.

We've all seen those inspirational ads.

이런 영감을 주는 광고는 다들 보신 적 있죠.

I remember meeting with Nike leadership in 2010,

2010년 나이키 이사회와 한 회의가 기억납니다.

and they told me about an initiative they sponsored called the Girl Effect.

나이키가 추진하는 ‘걸 이펙트(Girl Effect)’ 캠페인 얘길했죠.

They promoted adolescent girls as the key to improving societies

전 세계의 사회를 개선하기 위해

around the globe.

청소년기 소녀들이 중요하다고 홍보하는 것이었어요.

They said they believed in women and girls.

나이키는 여성과 소녀들의 힘을 믿고

And if I joined Nike,

나이키와 함께 일하면

I could empower them.

제가 그들에게 더 힘을 줄 수 있다고요.

And I believed that.

저도 그 말을 믿었죠.

But guess what?

그런데 그거 아세요?

Girls come from somewhere.

소녀들이 하늘에서 그냥 떨어지는 게 아니죠.

And women having babies during childrearing years

가임 기간 동안 여성들이 출산을 하는 일은

is something that should be celebrated, not punished.

벌은 커녕 상을 줘야할 일이죠.

It should be a part of a normal, thriving, professional, athletic career.

잘 나가는 선수 경력에서 자연스러운 부분이어야 해요.

And women in all fields should never feel the need

분야를 막론하고 여성들이 자신의 임신 사실을

to hide a pregnancy, at 4am, in the dark,

감춰야 한다고 느껴서는 안 되죠. 더군다나 어두컴컴한 새벽 4시에요.

so that they won't be photographed doing that thing that they love.

가장 즐겨야 할 순간에 사진 찍힐까 봐 두려워서요.

Remember how scared I told you I was when I was on the track that day?

2018년 그날 트랙 위에서 제가 얼마나 두려웠는지 아까 말했죠?

My mind was racing with the consequences of my decision to start a family.

머릿속에는 제 출산 결정이 불러올 결과로 가득했어요.

I had already been going through

당시 저는 나이키와

a difficult renegotiation period with Nike,

힘들게 재협상을 추진중이었고

and they were already offering me 70 percent less

나이키 측에서 제시한 후원액은

than what I had previously been making.

제가 이전에 받았던 액수보다 70% 삭감된 금액이었어요.

And that was even before they knew about the baby.

나이키 측에선 아직 제 임신을 모르고 있었는데도요.

Don't even get me started with the ageism

자본주의의 상품이 나이를 이유로 차별 받는 것은

that is embedded in the capitalist dream.

정말 말도 마세요.

So when I told them about my pregnancy,

제가 나이키 측에 임신 사실을 털어 놓으면서

I asked for a clause in the contract

계약서에 조항 하나를 추가해달라고 했죠.

that specified they wouldn't reduce my pay

출산 후 12개월 동안은 후원액을

within 12 months of giving birth.

감액하지 않는다는 조항이었어요.

They said yes.

승락하더군요.

But -- you knew there was going to be a "but", right?

하지만... 이 말이 나올 줄 아셨죠?

But it was only a yes for me.

하지만 이 조항은 저에게만 적용되는 것이었어요.

They weren't ready to offer that same protection for all female athletes.

다른 모든 여자 선수들에게 동일한 보호를 제공할 준비가 되지 않았죠.

They weren't ready to set the precedent.

모범 선례를 만들 준비가 되지 않았던 거죠.

A couple of days later, my agent called me.

며칠 후 전화 한 통이 옵니다.

Nike wanted to use me in a commercial for the Women's World Cup.

나이키가 여자 월드컵 광고에 저를 쓰고 싶어 한다더군요.

I couldn't believe it.

믿을 수가 없더군요.

Nike wanted to use me to tell women and girls

나이키가 나를 내세워 여성과 소녀들에게 ‘뭐든 할 수 있다’는

that they could do anything,

메시지를 전하고자 한다니요.

even though the contract before me said the exact opposite.

제 앞에 놓인 계약서는 완전히 반대 내용을 담고 있었는데요.

I knew what I had to do.

뭘 해야는지 깨달았죠.

I knew I had to leave.

나이키를 떠나야 한다는 것을요.

I knew I was afraid,

분명 두려웠지만

but I did it anyways.

그렇게 했어요.

I wrote an op-ed in "The New York Times"

뉴욕 타임스에 기고하여

calling out Nike's maternity policy,

나이키의 임신 관련 정책을 지적했죠.

and I wasn't the only one.

그리고 저 혼자가 아니었어요.

My teammates and I, we helped turn the tide.

저와 제 팀원들이 힘을 모아 상황을 역전시켰죠.

Now, Nike offers eighteen months maternity protection

이제 나이키는 임신 한 선수에게 18개월의 보호 조항을 제공합니다.

and other sponsors --

they came forward and they announced their new guarantees for female athletes

Too late for me,

but amazing for the women coming up now.

I didn't resign with Nike, and I'm here to tell the tale.

But more than that,

I'm here to tell you that you can do it, too.

Once you find the courage to believe in yourself,

I went on to find a new sponsor

in the female-led, female-focused Athleta,

the International Olympic Committee's childcare policy.

Together, we raised 200,000 dollars

for female athletes to be able to afford childcare when they go to races.

Because women have babies,

and these children don't disappear when the races begin.

I made it back to the Olympics two years after giving birth.

출산하고 2년 후 다시 올림픽에 출전했고

I won a gold and a bronze.

금메달과 동메달을 땄습니다.

And I became the most decorated American track and field athlete of all time.

All while my daughter was watching.

AF: I was running for so much more than for medals

I was running as a representation for women and for mothers

and for anybody who had been told that their story was over.

I remember crossing that line in Tokyo and having such a sense of fulfillment.

도쿄 올림픽에서 마지막 결승선을 통과하며 엄청난 성취감을 느꼈어요.

I looked down at my feet

고개를 숙여 제 발을 봤을 때

and for the first time in my entire career,

제 평생 선수 경력에서 처음으로

I wasn't wearing Adidas,

아디다스를 신고 있지 않았고

I wasn't wearing Nike.

나이키를 신고 있는 것도 아녔고

I was wearing Saysh,

세이시(Saysh)를 신고 있었죠.

the women's footwear brand that I founded,

세이시(Saysh)는 제가 설립한 여성 신발 브랜드로

designed for and by women,

여성만을 위해, 여성이 디자인하는 회사입니다.

when I was left without a footwear sponsor.

신발 협찬해 줄 후원사가 없었을 때 세운 회사죠.

Because I was tired of not being valued or able to show up fully as myself.

가치를 인정받지 못하고 제 이름만으로 출전할 수 없던 게 지겨워서요.

I learned that my voice has power,

제 목소리에는 힘이 있음을 알게 되었고

and when I bet on myself, change is possible.

스스로를 믿고 투자하면 변화는 가능하다는 걸 배웠어요.

During the pandemic,

이번 팬데믹 기간 동안

we all saw what happens when that thin line

어떤 일이 벌어지는지 보았죠.

between our professional and personal lives permanently blurs.

직업의 삶과 사적인 삶의 희미한 경계가 완전히 사라지는 것을요.

We have seen women step back, give up, drop out,

여성들이 한 걸음 물러나 포기하고 그만 두는 상황을 보았습니다.

as having it all became doing it all,

직업이든 가족이든 원하면 모두 직접 해야하는 상황이 되었는데

and doing it all became impossible.

모든 걸 다 한다는 것은 불가능해졌잖아요.

We have got to stop forcing people to choose between parenting

자기가 열정을 느끼는 일과 육아 사이에 둘 중 하나를 택하라고

and doing the work that they love.

강요하는 일은 멈춰야 합니다.

And we've got to stop pretending that we're not making those decisions

이런 결정이 우리의 선택이 아니라는 거짓말은 버려야 합니다.

because the results affect us all.

Not just women, but men and our children, too.

Isn't it past time that we call out the hypocrisy

and create a new normal?

새로운 기본을 만들어야 할 때가 아닐까요?

One with real generosity, humanity and truth at the center,

중심 가치로 진정한 관대함과 인류애와 진실을 가진 기본 환경을요.

not some misplaced sense of what business is or does.

비즈니스란 게 원래 이런 것이라는 잘못된 상식말고요.

We should say what we will tolerate.

우리가 용납하는 건 어디까지라고 말해야합니다.

And as we all recover from the pandemic that has flattened us,

let's just not rebuild the same version of the broken system that we had before.

But let's learn and create something new.

And you don’t have to be an Olympian

It will typically happen in moments of fear

보통 가장 두려운 순간에

when you don't see the path forward.

앞 길이 보이지 않을 때 그 순간이 올 거예요.

In my own experience, it was a terrifying decision,

but that will be your first clue.

That feeling of being terrified is your invitation to create change.

You have to acknowledge those feelings,

you have to brave them, and you have to fight to move forward.

It won't be easy.

You will be afraid.

Your voice will shake.

But what I can absolutely promise you
