in the dark time before the scientific revolution

people had low expectations.

For their lives, for their descendants' lives.

Typically, they expected

nothing significantly new or better to be achieved, ever.

This pessimism famously appears in the Bible,

He's called Qohelet, he's an enigmatic chap.

He wrote, "What has been is what will be,

there is nothing new under the sun.

Is there something of which it is said, 'Look, this is new.'

No, that thing was already done in the ages that came before us."

Qohelet was describing a world without novelty.

Qohelet ဟာ ဆန်းသစ်မှုရယ်လို့ မရှိနိုင်တဲ့ ကမ္ဘာကြီးကို ဖေါ်ပြခဲ့ပါတယ်။

By novelty I mean something new in Qohelet's sense,

not merely something that's changed,

but a significant change with lasting effects,

and, preferably, "good."

So, purely random changes aren't novelty.

OK, Heraclitus did say a man can't step in the same river twice,

because it's not the same river, he's not the same man.

But if the river is changing randomly,

it really is the same river.

In contrast,

if an idea in a mind spreads to other minds,

and changes lives for generations,

that is novelty.

Human life without novelty

ဆန်းသစ်မှုမရှိတဲ့ လူသားရဲ့ ဘဝဟာ

is life without creativity, without progress.

ဖန်တီးတီထွင်မှု မရှိတဲ့ တိုးတက်မှု မရှိတဲ့ ဘဝ ဖြစ်ပါလိမ့်မယ်။

It's a static society, a zero-sum game.

အဲဒါဟာ ငြိမ်သက်နေတဲ့ လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်း၊ ဘာမှမပြောင်းလဲတဲ့ ဂိမ်းနဲ့ တူပါမယ်။

That was the living hell in which Qohelet lived.

အဲဒါကြောင့် Qohelet နေထိုင်ခဲ့ရတာက ငရဲထဲ နေထိုင်ရမှုမျိုးပါ။

Like everyone, until a few centuries ago.

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ ရာစုနှစ် အနည်းငယ်အထိ လူတိုင်းလိုလို အဲဒီလို နေခဲ့ကြရတာပါ။

It was hell, because for humans,

suffering is intimately related to staticity.

Because staticity isn't just frustrating.

All sources of suffering --

ငတ်ဘေး၊ ရောဂါဘေး၊ ဂြိုဟ်မွှား ဝင်တိုက်မယ့်ဘေး၊

famine, pandemics, incoming asteroids,

ပြီးတော့ စစ်မက်နဲ့ ကျွန်စနစ်တို့လို အရာတွေဟာ

and things like war and slavery,

hurt people only until we have created the knowledge to prevent them.

အဲဒါတွေ ဟန့်တားရေး နည်းလမ်းတွေ လူတွေ မဖန် တီးနိုင်ကြတဲ့ အချိန်ထိသာ ဒုက္ခပေးခဲ့ကြတယ်။

There's a story in Somerset Maugham's novel "Of Human Bondage"

Somerset Maugham ရဲ့ "Of Human Bondage" ဝတ္ထုထဲ ဖြစ်ရပ်တစ်ခု ပါပါတယ်။

about an ancient sage

who summarizes the entire history of mankind as,

And indeed, the overwhelming majority of humans who have ever lived

had lives of suffering and grueling labor,

And yes, in most generations

nothing had any novel consequence for subsequent generations.

Nevertheless, when ancient people tried to explain their condition,

they typically did so in grandiose cosmic terms.

Which was the right thing to do, as it turns out.

were largely false.

Some tried to explain

the grimness and monotony of their world

in terms of an endless cosmic war between good and evil,

in which humans were the battleground.

Which neatly explained why their own experience was full of suffering,

and why progress never happened.

But it wasn't true.

Amazingly enough,

all their conflict and suffering

were just due to the way they processed ideas.

Being satisfied with dogma, and just-so stories,

Twentieth-century physics did create better explanations,

but still in terms of a cosmic war.

This time, the combatants were order and chaos, or entropy.

That story does allow for hope for the future.

it's even bleaker than the ancient myths,

Currently, there's a story of a local battle in that war,

between sustainability, which is order,

ရေရှည်တည်တံ့မှု၊ တနည်း စနစ်ရှိမှု

and wastefulness, which is chaos --

that's the contemporary take on good and evil,

often with the added twist that humans are the evil,

so we shouldn't even try to win.

And recently,

there have been tales of another cosmic war,

between gravity, which collapses the universe,

whichever of those cosmic forces wins,

All those pessimistic accounts of the human condition

contain some truth,

but as prophecies,

they're all misleading, and all for the same reason.

None of them portrays humans as what we really are.

As Jacob Bronowski said,

I'll say more about that in a moment,

but first, what sorts of thing create novelty?

Well, the beginning of the universe surely did.

The big bang, nearly 14 billion years ago,

created space, time and energy,

So long as the great monotony lasts,

what has been out there

တချိန်လုံး ရှိလာခဲ့တာတွေဟာ

really is what will be.

And there is nothing out there

of which it can truly be said, "Look, this is new."

Nevertheless,

at some point during the great monotony,

there was an event -- inconsequential at the time,

and even billions of years later,

it had affected nothing beyond its home planet --

yet eventually, it could cause cosmically momentous novelty.

That event was the origin of life:

creating the first genetic knowledge,

On Earth, it utterly transformed the surface.

Genes in the DNA of single-celled organisms

put oxygen in the air,

အောက်ဆီဂျင်ကို လေထဲမှုတ်ထည့်ပေးခဲ့ကြတယ်၊

extracted CO2,

CO2 ကို ထုတ်ယူခဲ့ကြပြီး

မြေကြီးထဲကို မြေဖြူနဲ့ သံသတ္တုရိုင်းတွေကို ထည့်သွင်းပေးခဲ့ကြတယ်၊

put chalk and iron ore into the ground,

hardly a cubic inch of the surface to some depth has remained unaffected

အဲဒီမျိုးရိုးဗီဇတွေကြောင့် မျက်နှာပြင်ပေါ် ကုဗလက်မခန့် ရှိတဲ့ နေရာတွေဟာ

by those genes.

သက်ရောက်မှုမရှိဘဲ ကျန်ရစ်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

The Earth became, if not a novel place on the cosmic scale,

ကမ္ဘာဂြိုဟ်ဟာ အာကာသ စကေးနဲ့ ပြောရရင် ဆန်းသစ်တဲ့ နေရာ ဖြစ်မလာခဲ့တောင်မှ

နားလည်ရန် ခဲယဉ်းတဲ့ နေရာတစ်ခု ဖြစ်လာတာ အမှန်ပါပဲ။

certainly a weird one.

Just as an example, beyond Earth,

ဥပမာတစ်ခုအနေဖြင့်၊ ကမ္ဘာရဲ့ ပြင်ပတွင်

only a few hundred different chemical substances have been detected.

မတူကွဲပြားကြတဲ့ ဓာတုပစ္စည်းတွေဆိုလို့ ရာအနည်းငယ်မျှသာ ရှိကြပါတယ်။

Presumably, there are some more in lifeless locations,

သက်ရှိဘဝ မရှိတဲ့ နေရာတွေမှာ နောက်ထပ် နည်းနည်းပိုပြီး ရှိချင်ရှိမှာပါ။

but on Earth,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကမ္ဘာမြေပေါ်မှာ ကျတော့

evolution created billions of different chemicals.

ဆင့်ကဲဖြစ်စဉ်က ဘီလီယံချီရှိတဲ့ မျိုးစုံသော ဓာတုပစ္စည်းတွေကို ဖန်တီးပေးခဲ့တယ်။

And then the first plants, animals,

ပြီးတော့ အဲဒီနောက်မှာ ပထမဦးဆုံး အပင်တွေ၊ အကောင်တွေ၊

and then, in some ancestor species of ours,

အဲဒီနောက်ပိုင်းတွင် ကျုပ်တို့ရဲ့ ဘိုးဘေး ဖြစ်ကြတဲ့ မျိုးစိတ်တွေကို

explanatory knowledge.

ဖန်တီးပေးခဲ့တယ်လို့ ခန့်မှန်း သိရှိရပါတယ်။

For the first time in the universe, for all we know.

ကျုပ်တို့ သိကြတဲ့ စကြဝဠ တစ်ခုလုံးအတွင်းမှာ ပထမဦးဆုံးအကြိမ်ပါ။

Explanatory knowledge is the defining adaptation of our species.

ရှင်းပြတဲ့ အသိပညာက ကျုပ်တို့ မျိုးစိတ်တွေ ညီထွေစွာ ပြောင်းလဲခဲ့ပုံကို ပြသပေးတယ်။

It differs from the nonexplanatory knowledge

အဲဒါဟာ ဥပမာ DNA ထဲက နားလည်မရတဲ့ အသိပညာနဲ့

in DNA, for instance,

မတူ ကွဲပြားပြီး

by being universal.

စကြဝဠာလုံးဆိုင်ရာ နိယာမပါ။

That is to say, whatever can be understood,

ဒီတော့ ဆိုလိုချင်တာက၊ နားလည်လို့ ရနိုင်သမျှကို

ရှင်းပြနိုင်တဲ့ အသိပညာမှတစ်ဆင့် နားလည်လို့ ရနိုင်တယ် ဆိုတဲ့အချက်ကိုပါ။

can be understood through explanatory knowledge.

And more, any physical process

အဲဒါထက်ပိုပြီး၊ ဘယ် ရုပ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာ ဖြစ်စဉ်ကိုမဆို

can be controlled by such knowledge,

အဲဒီလို အသိပညာအားဖြင့် ထိန်းချုပ်လို့ ရနိုင်ပါတယ်၊

limited only by the laws of physics.

ရူပဗေဒဆိုင်ရာ နိယာမများကသာ ကန့်သတ်နိုင်စွမ်း ရှိကြပါတယ်။

And so, explanatory knowledge, too,

ဒီလိုနည်းဖြင့် ရှင်းပြရေး အသိပညာကပါ

has begun to transform the Earth's surface.

ကမ္ဘာကြီးရဲ့ မြေမျက်နှာပြင်ကို စပြီး အသွင်ပြောင်းမှု စတင်ခဲ့တယ်။

And soon, the Earth will become the only known object in the universe

မကြာခင်မှာ ကမ္ဘာကြီးက ဂြိုဟ်မွှားတွေကို ဆွဲဆောင်ရမယ့် အစား ဘေးကို ကန်ထုတ်ပစ်တဲ့

that turns aside incoming asteroids instead of attracting them.

စကြာဝဠထဲက တစ်ခုတည်းသော အရာအဖြစ် ထင်ရှားတဲ့ အရာဖြစ်လာမှာပါ။

Qohelet was understandably misled

Qohelet ဟာ သူ့ခေတ်ကာလတုန်းက တိုးတက်ပြောင်းလဲမှုတွေ နှေးခဲ့လွန်းလို့

by the painful slowness of progress in his day.

သိနားလည်နိုင်စွမ်း မရှိခဲ့ဘဲ လွဲမှားသွားမိခဲ့တာပါ။

Novelty in human life was still too rare, too gradual,

လူ့ဘဝထဲက ဆန်းသစ်မှုဟာလည်း ရှားပါးခဲ့ပြီး သိပ်ကို နှေးကွေးခဲ့လို့၊

to be noticed in one generation.

မျိုးဆက် တစ်ဆက်အတွင်းမှာ မှတ်မိရန် မလွယ်ခဲ့ပါ။

And in the biosphere,

ပြီးတော့ ဇီဝထုထဲမှားလည်း

the evolution of novel species was even slower.

ဆန်းသစ်တဲ့ မျိုးစိတ်တွေ ဆင့်ကဲ ဖြစ်ပွားမှုဟာ ပိုလို့တောင် နှေးခဲ့တယ်။

ဒါပေမဲ့ အဒီအရာနှစ်ရပ်စလုံး ဖြစ်ပျက်လျက် ရှိနေခဲ့ကြပါပြီ။

But both things were happening.

Now, why is there a great monotony in the universe at large,

ဒါနဲ့ စကြဝဠာ တစ်ရပ်လုံးထဲတွင် ပုံစံမပြောင်းထပ်နေမှု လွှမ်းမိုးနေချိန်မှာ

and what makes our planet buck that trend?

ကျုပ်တို့ ကမ္ဘာဂြိုဟ်က ဘာကများ ပြောင်းပစ်ခဲ့တာလဲ။

Well, the universe at large is relatively simple.

တကယ်တော့ စကြဝဠာဟာ ခြုံပြောရရင် အတော်ကလေး ရိုးရှင်းပါတယ်။

Stars are so simple

ကြယ်တွေဟာ ရိုးရှင်းကြပါတယ်၊

that we can predict their behavior billions of years into the future,

၎င်းတို့ရဲ့ လှုပ်ရှားပုံကို နှစ်ဘီလီယံချီ ကျုပ်တို့ ကြိုတင်ဟောပေးနိုင်တယ်၊

and retrodict how they formed billions of years ago.

ပြီးတော့ ၎င်းတို့ ဖြစ်ပေါ်လာခဲ့ပုံကိုလည်း နောက်ကို ခြေခရာခံ ဖေါ်ပြနိုင်ကြတယ်။

So why is the universe simple?

ဘာဖြစ်လို့ စကြဝဠာဟာ ဒီလို ရိုးရှင်းနေတာလဲ။

Basically, it's because big, massive, powerful things

အဓိကအားဖြင့်၊ ၎င်းဟာ ကြီးမားလွန်းပြီး ထထည်ကြီးပြီး စွမ်းအင် ကြီးမားလို့

strongly affect lesser things, and not vice versa.

ပိုသေးတဲ့ အရာတွေအပေါ် သက်ရောက်မှု ကြီးမားပြီး ပြောင်းပြန်ကျတော့ ဘာမှမရှိပါ။

ကျွန်တော်က အဲဒါကို ကြီးစဉ်ငယ်လိုက် အုပ်ချုပ်မှု ခေါ်ပါတယ်။

I call that the hierarchy rule.

For example, when a comet hits the Sun,

ဥပမာဆိုပါစို့၊ ကြယ်တံခွန် တစ်ခုက နေကို ထိတိုက်ခဲ့ရင်၊

the Sun carries on just as before,

နေဟာ အရင်အတိုင်းပဲ ဆက်လည်ပတ်နေမှာပါ။

but the comet is vaporized.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကြယ်တံခွန်ကျတော့ အငွေ့ပျံပျောက်သွားမှာပါ။

For the same reason,

အလားတူ အကြောင်းရင်းကြောင့်ပဲ၊

big things are not much affected by small parts of themselves,

ကြီးမားတဲ့ အရာတွေဟာ သူတို့ထဲက သေးငယ်တဲ့ အပိုင်းအစ အသေးလေးတွေရဲ့

i.e., by details.

သက်ရောက်မှုကို သိပ်မခံကြရပါ၊

Which means that their overall behavior

တနည်းအားဖြင့် ၎င်းတို့ရဲ့ အပြုအမူ တစ်ရပ်လုံးဟာ

is simple.

ရိုးရှင်းပါတယ်။

And since nothing very new can happen to things

မပြောင်းလဲကျန်ရစ်ခဲ့ကြတဲ့ အရာတွေဆီမှာ အသစ်ဆိုလို့

that remain simple,

ဖြစ်ခဲ့တာမို့လို့

the hierarchy rule, by causing large-scale simplicity,

ခုနက ပြောခဲ့တဲ့ ကြီးစဉ်ငယ်လိုက် စည်းကမ်းချက်နှင့်အညီ

has caused the great monotony.

ကြီးမားတဲ့ အရာတွေဟာ ပုံစံမပြောင်း ထပ်နေမှုကို ဖန်တီးပေးကြတယ်။

But, the saving grace is

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကယ်တင်ပေးမယ့် အရာက

the hierarchy rule is not a law of nature.

ကြီးစဉ်ငယ်လိုက် စည်းမျဉ်းဟာ သဘာဝရဲ့ နိယာမ မဟုတ်ခြင်းပါပဲ။

It just happens to have held so far in the universe,

အဲဒါဟာ ကျုပ်တို့ရဲ့ နေရာမှလွဲပြီး စကြာဝဠာထဲမှာ

အချိန်ကြာမြင့်စွာ ရှိနေခဲ့လို့ပါ။

except here.

In our biosphere, molecule-sized objects, genes,

ကျုပ်တို့ရဲ့ ဇီဝထုထဲတွင် မော်လီကျူးအရွယ် အရာဝတ္ထုတွေ၊ ဗီဇတွေဟာ

control vastly disproportionate resources.

ကြီးမား ကျယ်ပြန့်လှတဲ့ ရင်းမြစ်များကို ထိန်းချုပ်ထားကြတယ်။

The first genes for photosynthesis,

photosynthesis အတွက် ပေါ်လာတဲ့ ပထမဦးဆုံး ဗီဇများဟာ

by causing their own proliferation,

သူတို့ဘာသာသူတို့ ပြန့်ပွားလာခဲ့နိုင်ပြီး

and then transforming the surface of the planet,

နောက်မှာ ကမ္ဘာဂြိုဟ်ရဲ့ မျက်နှာပြင်ကို အသွင် ပြောင်းပစ်ခဲ့ကြပြီး

have violated or reversed the hierarchy rule

ကြီးစဉ်ငယ်လိုက် စည်းမျဉ်းကို ချိုးဖောက် လိုက်ကြတယ်၊ သို့မဟုတ် လှန်ပစ်ခဲ့ကြလို့

by the mind-blowing factor of 10 to the power 40.

စိတ်ကူး မရနိုင်တဲ့ ၁၀ ဂဏန်းကို ထပ်ကိန်း ၄၀ အထိရှိတဲ့ စွမ်းအားနဲ့ လုပ်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

Explanatory knowledge is potentially far more powerful

ရှင်းပြပေးရေး အသိပညာဟာ မိမိစွမ်းပကားအရ များစွာ စွမ်းထက်ပါတယ်၊

because of universality,

စကြဝဠာ သဘောကို ဆောင်လို့ပါ၊

and more rapidly created.

ပိုလျင်မြန်စွာ ဖန်တီးရနိုင်လို့ပါ။

လူ့အသိပညာက ၁၀ ဂဏန်း ထပ်ကိန်း ၄၀ အထိကို တက်လှမ်းနိုင်ပါက

When human knowledge has achieved a factor 10 to the 40,

၎င်းဟာ နဂါးငွေ့တန်း တစ်ခုလုံးကို ကောင်းမွန်စွာ ထိန်းချုပ်နိုင်မှာပါ၊

it will pretty much control the entire galaxy,

အဲဒီထက်ကို ကျော်လွန်ပြီး လှမ်းမျှော်ကြည့်မှာပါ။

and will be looking beyond.

So humans,

ဒီတော့ လူသားတွေဟာ

and any other explanation creators who may exist out there,

ပြီးတော့ ရှင်းပြနိုင်စွမ်း ရှိကြတဲ့ သက်ရှိ တစ်နေရာရာမှာ ရှိကြသေးတယ် ဆိုရင်၊

are the ultimate agents of novelty for the universe.

စကြဝဠာကို ဆန်းသစ်ပေးကြမယ့် နောက်ဆုံးသူတွေ ဖြစ်ကြမှာပါ။

ကျုပ်တို့ကမှ အကြောင်းရင်းရော ရယူရာ နည်းစနစ်တွေပါ ဖြစ်ကြလို့

We are the reason and the means

by which novelty and creativity, knowledge, progress,

ဆန်းသစ်မှုနှင့် ဖန်တီးမှု၊ အသိပညာ၊ တိုးတက်မှုတို့ဟာ

can have objective, large-scale physical effects.

ရှေ့မှာ ပန်းတိုင်တွေကို ချမှတ်နိုင်ကြပြီး ကြီးမားတဲ့ ရုပ်ပိုင်း သက်ရောက်မှု ရှိတယ်။

From the human perspective,

လူသားတို့ရဲ့ ရှုထောင့်မှကြည့်ရင်၊

the only alternative to that living hell of static societies

ငြိမ်နေကြတဲ့ လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းတွေအတွက် အစားထိုးစရာ တစ်ခုတည်းမှာ

is continual creation of new ideas,

တချိန်လုံး အတွေးအခေါ် အသစ်တွေ၊

behaviors, new kinds of objects.

အပြုအမူတွေ၊ အရာဝတ္ထု အသစ်တွေကို ဖန်တီးမှုပါပဲ။

This robot will soon be obsolete,

ဒီစက်ရုပ်ဟာ မကြာခင်မှာ ဟောင်းနွမ်းသွားလိမ့်မယ်၊

because of new explanatory knowledge, progress.

အသိပညာအသစ်တွေ၊ တိုးတက်မှုတွေ ရောက်လာကြမှာမို့လို့ပါ။

ဒါပေမဲ့ အာသာသရဲ့ ရှုထောင့်မှ ကြည့်ရင်၊

But from the cosmic perspective,

explanatory knowledge is the nemesis of the hierarchy rule.

ရှင်းပြနိုင်တဲ့ အသိပညာဟာ ကြီးစဉ်ငယ်လိုက် စည်းမျဉ်းရဲ့ ရှောင်မရတဲ့ နိဂုံးပါ။

It's the destroyer of the great monotony.

၎င်းဟာ ထပ်နေတဲ့မဟာတေးသံကို ဖျက်ဆီးပစ်မယ့်သူပါ။

So it's the creator of the next cosmological era,

အဲဒါကြောင့် ၎င်းဟာ လာမယ့် အာကာသခေတ်ကို

the Anthropocene.

ပြီးတော့ Anthropocene ခေတ်ကို ဖန်တီးပေးမယ့်သူပါ။

If one can speak of a cosmic war,

တစ်ယောက်ယောက်က အာကာသစစ် အကြောင်းကို ပြောလာရင်၊

it's not the one portrayed in those pessimistic stories.

စိတ်ပျက်စရာ ပုံပြင်များထဲက စစ်ပွဲတွေကို မဆိုလိုချင်ပါဘူး။

It's a war between monotony and novelty,

တကယ့်စစ်ပွဲက ပုံစံမပြောင်းထပ်နေမှုနှင့် ဆန်းသစ်မှု အကြား၊

between stasis and creativity.

ငြိမ်သက်မှုနဲ့ တီထွင်ဖန်တီးမှု အကြားက စစ်ပွဲပါ။

And in this war,

အဲဒီစစ်ထဲမှာကျတော့၊

our side is not destined to lose.

ကျုပ်တို့ရဲ့ ဘက်ဟာ ရှုံးမယ့်သူ မဖြစ်နိုင်ပါ။

ကျုပ်တို့ဟာ ကျုပ်တို့ရဲ့ သူမတူ ထူးခြားတဲ့ ရှင်းပြရေးအသိပညာကို အသုံးချကြမယ်ဆိုရင်၊

If we choose to apply our unique capacity to create explanatory knowledge,

we could win.
