"You don't belong here"

"تۆ سەر بە ئێرە نیت"

almost always means, "We can't find a function or a role for you."

بە نزیکەیی بە مانای، "ناتوانین کار یا گرنگیت بۆ بدۆزینەوە." دێت

"You don't belong here" sometimes means, "You're too queer to handle."

"تۆ سەر بە ئێرە نیت" ھەندێ کات واتا، "زۆر سەیری بۆ ویستن."

"You don't belong here"

"تۆ سەر بە ئێرە نیت"

very rarely means,

زۆر بەدەگمەن واتا،

"There's no way for you to exist and be happy here."

"ھیچ ڕێگەیەک بۆ تۆ نییە تا بوونت ھەبێت و دڵخۆش بیت لێرە."

I went to university in Johannesburg, South Africa,

چووم بۆ زانکۆ لە جۆھانسبێرگ، ئەفریقای باشوور،

and I remember the first time a white friend of mine

و بیرمە یەکەم جار یەکێک لە ھاوڕێ سپی پێستەکانم

heard me speaking Setswana, the national language of Botswana.

گوێی لێم بوو بە سێتسوانا قسەم دەکرد، زمانی نەتەوەیی بۆتسوانا.

I was on the phone with my mother

بە تەلەفۆن قسەم لەگەڵ دایکم دەکرد

and the intrigue which painted itself across her face was absolutely priceless.

و ڕەنگێکی بە بەھا دەموچاوی داگرت.

As soon as I hung up, she comes to me and says,

ھەر کە تەلەفۆنم داخستەوە، ھات بۆ لام و وتی،

"I didn't know you could do that.

"نەمدەزانی دەتوانی ئەمە بکەیت.

After all these years of knowing you, how did I not know you could do that?"

دوای چەندین ساڵ ناسینت، چۆن نەمزانیوە دەتوانی ئەمە بکەیت؟"

What she was referring to was the fact that I could switch off the twang

ئەوەی مەبەستی بوو ئەوە بوو کە دەمتوانی لەرینەوەی ژێیەکانم نەھێڵم

and slip into a native tongue,

و بچمەوە سەر زمانی نیشتمانی،

and so I chose to let her in on a few other things

و ڕێگەم پێیدا چەند شتێکی تر بزانێت

which locate me as a Motswana,

کە شوێنی وەکو مۆتسوانایەک دیاری کردم،

not just by virtue of the fact that I speak a language

نەک تەنھا بەھۆی قسە کردنم بە زمانێک

or I have family there,

یان کە خانەوادەیەکم ھەیە لەوێ،

but that a rural child lives within this shiny visage of fabulosity.

بەڵکو بەوەی کە منداڵێکی لادێیی لەناو نامۆیی ئەم دەموچاوە بریسکەدارەدا دەژی.

I invited the Motswana public into the story, my story,

مۆتسواناکەم بانگھێشتی چیرۆکەکە کرد، چیرۆکی خۆم،

as a transgender person years ago, in English of course,

وەکو کەسێکی ڕەگەز گۆڕاو لە چەند ساڵ پێش ئێستا، بە دڵنیاییەوە بە ئینگلیزی،

because Setswana is a gender-neutral language

لەبەر ئەوەی سێتسوانا زمانێکی بێلایەنە لە ڕووی ڕەگەزەوە

and the closest we get is an approximation of "transgender."

نزیکترینی ئەوەی پێی گەشتین لێکچوون بوو لە "ڕەگەز گۆڕین."

And an important part of my history got left out of that story,

و بەشێکی گرنگ لە مێژووی من جێھێشترا لەو چیرۆکە،

by association rather than out of any act of shame.

بە بەشداریک ردن بەبێ ھیچ شەرمێک.

"Kat" was an international superstar,

"کات" ئەستێرەیەکی سینەمایی نێودەوڵەتی بوو،

a fashion and lifestyle writer, a musician, theater producer

نوسەری جل و بەرگ و شێوازی ژیان بوو، مۆسیقا ژەن و، دەرھێنەری شانۆ بوو

and performer --

و شانۆکار بوو --

all the things that qualify me to be a mainstream, whitewashed,

ھەموو شتەکان کە منیان دەگونجاند بۆ ڕێڕەوی گشتی، سپی کراو،

new age digestible queer.

تەمەنێکی نوێی نامۆ.

Kat.

کات.

Kat had a degree from one of the best universities in Africa,

کات پلەیەکی ھەبوو لە یەکێک لە باشترین زانکۆکانی ئەفریقا،

oh no, the world.

ئۆو نەخێر، جیھان.

By association, what Kat wasn't

بە بەشداری کردن، ئەوەی کات نەبوو

was just like the little brown-skinned children

ئەوە بوو کە تەنھا وەکو منداڵێکی بچووکی پێست قاوەیی

frolicking through the streets of some incidental railway settlement

کە یاری دەکات بەناو شەقامەکانی ھەندێ بینای ھێڵی ئاسنینی لاوەکی

like Tati Siding,

وەکو تاتی سایدین،

or an off-the-grid village like Kgagodi,

یان گوندێکی لاوەکی وەکو کگاگۆدی،

legs clad in dust stockings whose knees had blackened

قاچەکانی بە تۆزی گۆرەوی داپۆشراون ئەژنۆکانی ڕەش بوون

from years of kneeling and wax-polishing floors,

بە ساڵانێک چۆک دادان و سافکردنی زەوی.

whose shins were marked with lessons from climbing trees,

ئێسکی قاچەکانی نیشانە کرا بوون بە سەرکەوتنی درەخت،

who played until dusk,

کە یاری دەکرد تا زەردەپەڕ،

went in for supper by a paraffin lamp

چووە ژوورەوە بۆ نانی ئێوارە بەھۆی چراوە

and returned to play hide-and-seek amongst centipedes and owls

و دەگەڕایەوە بۆ یاری چاوشارکێ لەناو ھەزار پێ و کوندەپەپوودا

until finally someone's mother would call the whole thing to an end.

تا لە کۆتاییدا دایکی یەکێک کۆتایی بە ھەموو شتێک ھێنا.

That got lost both in translation and in transition,

کە ھەردووکیان ون بوون لە وەرگێڕان و گواستنەوەدا،

and when I realized this,

و کاتێک ئەمەم زانی،

I decided it was time for me to start building bridges between myselves.

بڕیارمدا کە کاتی منە بۆ درووست کردنی پرد لە نێوان دوو کەسی ناخی خۆمدا.

For me and for others to access me,

بۆ من و ئەوانیتر بۆ گەشتن بە من،

I had to start indigenizing my queerness.

پێویست بوو دەست بکەم بە زیاتر خۆماڵی كردنی نامۆییەکەم.

What I mean by indigenizing is stripping away the city life film

مەبەستم لە خۆماڵی کردن دوورخستنەوەی فیلمی ژیانی شارە

that stops you from seeing the villager within.

کە دەتوەستێنێت لە بینینی گوند نشینەکان لە ناوەوە.

In a time where being brown, queer, African and seen as worthy of space

لە کاتێکدا کە بوون بە قاوەیی، سەیر، ئەفریقی بە بەھا دەبینرێت

means being everything but rural,

مانادارە لە ھەموو شوێن تەنھا لە گوند نەبێت،

I fear that we're erasing the very struggles

دەترسم کە ئێمە ململانێکان بسڕینەوە

that got us to where we are now.

کە ئێمەی گەیاندووە بەو شوێنەی ئێستامان.

The very first time I queered being out in a village,

یەکەم جار کە بووم بە نامۆ لە دەرەوەی لادێ،

I was in my early 20s, and I wore a kaftan.

لە سەرەتاکانی تەمەنی ٢٠ ساڵیدا بووم، و کەوام پۆشی.

I was ridiculed by some of my family and by strangers for wearing a dress.

لەلایەن ھەندێ لە خانەوادەکەمەوە و نامۆوە گاڵتەم پێ کرا چونکە کراسی ژنانم لەبەربوو.

My defense against their comments was the default that we who don't belong,

بەرگری من دژی سەرنجەکانیان گوێنەدان بوو چونکە ئێمە سەر بەوانە نین،

the ones who are better than, get taught,

کە باشترن لەوانەی، فێرکراون،

we shrug them off and say, "They just don't know enough."

شانمان بۆیان ھەڵدەتەکاند و دەمانوت، "ئەوان زۆر نازانن."

And of course I was wrong, because my idea of wealth of knowledge

و بە دڵنیاییەوە من ھەڵە بووم، چونکە بیرۆکەی من بۆ سامانی زانین

was based in removing yourself from Third World thinking and living.

لەسەر بنچینەی سڕینەوەی خۆت بوو لە جیھانی سێیەمی بیرکردنەوە و ژیان.

But it took time for me to realize that my acts of pride

بەڵام کاتی ویست تا بزانم کە ڕۆڵی پڕ شانازی من

weren't most alive in the global cities I traipsed through,

زیندووترین نەبوون لە شارە جیھانییەکانی پیاسەم بەناویاندا کرد،

but in the villages where I speak the languages and play the games

بەڵام لە گوندەکانی کە قسەم بە زمانەکان دەکرد و یاریم دەکرد

and feel most at home and I can say,

ھەستم بە ماڵی خۆم دەکرد و دەتوانم بڵێم،

"I have seen the world,

"جیھانم بینیوە،

and I know that people like me aren't alone here, we are everywhere."

و دەزانم کەسی وەک من لێرە تەنھا نین، ئێمە لە ھەموو شوێنێکین."

And so I used these village homes for self-reflection

و ئەو گوندانەم بەکار دەھێنا بۆ بیرکردنەوە لە خود

and to give hope to the others who don't belong.

و بەخشینی ھیوا بەوانەی سەر بە ئێرە نین.

Indigenizing my queerness

زاڵکردنی نامۆیی من

means bridging the many exceptional parts of myself.

واتا دانانی پرد بۆ زۆر بەشی نا ئاسایی خۆم.

It means honoring the fact

واتا ڕێزگرتن لەو ڕاستییەی

that my tongue can contort itself to speak the Romance languages

کە زمانم دەتوانێت خۆی بنوشتێنێتەوە بۆ قسە کردن بە زمانی دڵداری

without denying or exoticizing the fact that when I am moved, it can do this:

بەبێ نکۆڵیکردن یان بە درۆ دانانی ڕاستییەکە کە من دەجوڵێم، دەتوانێت ئەمە بکات:

It means --

واتا --

(Cheers)

(ھاوارکردن)

It means branding cattle with my mother or chopping firewood with my cousins

واتا نیشانەکردنی ئاژەڵ لەگەڵ دایکم یان بڕینی داری ئاگر لەگەڵ ئامۆزاکانم

doesn't make me any less fabulous or queer,

واناکات سەیر و نامۆ بم،

even though I'm now accustomed to rooftop shindigs, wine-paired menus

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا من ڕاھاتبووم بە سەمای سەربان، لیستی خواردن و خواردنەوە

and VIP lounges.

و ژووری حەسانەوەی کەسی پایەبەرز.

It means wearing my pride through my grandmother's tongue,

واتا پۆشینی شانازی خۆم بەھۆی زمانی داپیرەم،

my mother's food, my grandfather's song,

خواردنی دایکم، گۆرانی باپیرەم،

my skin etched with stories of falling off donkeys

پێستم ھەڵکۆڵدرا بە چیرۆکەکانی کزبوونی گوێدرێژەکان

and years and years and years of sleeping under a blanket of stars.

و ساڵان و ساڵان و ساڵانی خەوتن لەژێر کۆمەڵێک ئەستێرە.

If there's any place I don't belong,

ئەگەر سەر بە ھیچ کوێ نەبم،

it's in a mind where the story of me starts with the branch of me being queer

لە بیردا کە چیرۆکی من دەستپێدەکات لەگەڵ نامۆ بوونی بەشێک لە من

and not with my rural roots.

و نەک بەھۆی ڕەگی لادێیی من.

Indigenizing my queerness means understanding

زاڵکردنی نامۆیی من واتا تێگەشتن

that the rural is a part of me, and I am an indelible part of it.

لەوەی کە لادێیی بەشێکە لە من، و من بەشێکی نەسڕاوەم لەو.
