"You don't belong here"

"నువ్వు ఇక్కడిదానవు కావు"

almost always means, "We can't find a function or a role for you."

దాదాపుగా దీనర్థం "నీకోసం ఏ కార్యాన్నీ కేటాయించలేకపోతున్నాం"

"You don't belong here" sometimes means, "You're too queer to handle."

"నువ్వు ఇక్కడిదానివి కావు" అంటే కొన్నిసార్లు"నిన్ను భరించడం కష్టం" అని.

"You don't belong here"

"నువ్వు ఇక్కడి దానివి కావు"

very rarely means,

చాలా అరుదుగా దీనర్థం,

"There's no way for you to exist and be happy here."

I went to university in Johannesburg, South Africa,

సౌత్ ఆఫ్రికా లోని జోహాన్స్ బర్గ్ యూనివర్సిటీకి వెళ్ళాను.

and I remember the first time a white friend of mine

నాకు బాగా గుర్తుంది తొలిసారి ఓ తెల్లజాతి ఫ్రెండ్

heard me speaking Setswana, the national language of Botswana.

నేను బోట్సువానా జాతీయభాష ఐన సెట్సువానాలో మాట్లాడడం విన్నది.

I was on the phone with my mother

అమ్మతో ఫోన్ లో మాట్లాడుతున్నాను

and the intrigue which painted itself across her face was absolutely priceless.

మునుపెరుగని ఓ కృత్రిమత ఆమె ముఖంలో పరుచుకుంది.

As soon as I hung up, she comes to me and says,

ఫోన్ పెట్టేయగానే నా వద్దకు వచ్చి ఇలా అంది

"I didn't know you could do that.

"నువ్విది చేయగలవని నాకు తెలీదు.

After all these years of knowing you, how did I not know you could do that?"

ఇన్నేళ్ల పరిచయం తర్వాత కూడా, నువ్విలా చేయగలవని నాకెలా తెలియలేదు?"

What she was referring to was the fact that I could switch off the twang

ఆమె ఉద్దేశ్యంనేను ట్వాగ్ నుండి మారి

and slip into a native tongue,

and so I chose to let her in on a few other things

which locate me as a Motswana,

I invited the Motswana public into the story, my story,

నేను ఈ కథలోకి,నాకథలోకి మోట్సువానా ప్రజల్ని ఆహ్వానించాను.

as a transgender person years ago, in English of course,

ఒక ట్రాన్స్ జెండర్ వ్యక్తి లాగా అఫ్ కోర్స్ ఇంగ్లీష్ లోనే అనుకోండి,

because Setswana is a gender-neutral language

ఎందుకంటే సెట్స్ వానా లింగ విభజన లేని భాష

and the closest we get is an approximation of "transgender."

ఉజ్జా యింపుగా "ట్రాన్స్ జెండర్" అనేది కాస్త దగ్గరగా వుంటుంది

And an important part of my history got left out of that story,

ఈ కధలో నా చరిత్రలోని ఓ ముఖ్యభాగం మిగిలిపోయింది,

by association rather than out of any act of shame.

అది సిగ్గుపడి కాదు, సాంగత్యం వల్ల.

"Kat" was an international superstar,

a fashion and lifestyle writer, a musician, theater producer

Kat had a degree from one of the best universities in Africa,

ఆఫ్రికాలోని ఉత్తమ యూనివర్సిటీ నుండి డిగ్రీ పొందింది

oh no, the world.

కాదు..ఈ ప్రపంచంలో.

By association, what Kat wasn't

సహవాసంతో ,కాట్ ఏదికాదో

was just like the little brown-skinned children

కేవలం గోధుమరంగున్న చిన్నపిల్లలవలె

frolicking through the streets of some incidental railway settlement

వీధుల్లో ఆడుతుండేది, అకస్మాత్తుగా రైల్వే సెటిల్ మెంటయిన

like Tati Siding,

తాతి సిడింగ్ లా,

or an off-the-grid village like Kgagodi,

లేదా ఈ గ్రిడ్ కు దూరంగా వున్న గ్రామం గాగోడి వలె

legs clad in dust stockings whose knees had blackened

మట్టి గొట్టుకొన్న స్టాకింగ్లతో నల్లగా మురికి పట్టిన మోకాళ్ళతో

from years of kneeling and wax-polishing floors,

ఏళ్ళతరబడి గచ్చులపై పాలిష్ చేయడం వల్ల,

whose shins were marked with lessons from climbing trees,

పిక్కలపై చెట్లెక్కిన గుర్తులతో

who played until dusk,

సూర్యాస్తమయం వరకు ఆడే ఆటలతో,

went in for supper by a paraffin lamp

క్రొవ్వత్తి వెలుగులో రాత్రిభోజనానికొచ్చి

and returned to play hide-and-seek amongst centipedes and owls

గుడ్లగూబలు,జెర్రుల మధ్య దాగుడుమూతలు ఆడడానికి తిరిగొచ్చేది

until finally someone's mother would call the whole thing to an end.

ఎవరోఒకరితల్లి వచ్చి పిలిచే వరకు ఆటలుసాగేవి.

That got lost both in translation and in transition,

అది దూరమయ్యింది అనువాదాలతో,మార్పులతో,

and when I realized this,

I decided it was time for me to start building bridges between myselves.

For me and for others to access me,

I had to start indigenizing my queerness.

What I mean by indigenizing is stripping away the city life film

that stops you from seeing the villager within.

In a time where being brown, queer, African and seen as worthy of space

ఒకప్పుడు గోధుమరంగులో వుండడం విచిత్రం ఆఫ్రికన్లు గా ఒక యోగ్యత గల స్థలంగా

means being everything but rural,

దానర్థం అన్నీ వున్నా పల్లెటూరివారని,

I fear that we're erasing the very struggles

నా భయమేంటంటే మనం పోరాటాల్ని మరిచిపోతున్నాం

that got us to where we are now.

అవే మనల్ని ఇక్కడిదాకా తీసుకొచ్చాయి.

The very first time I queered being out in a village,

మొదటిసారి ఊరు వదిలితే విచిత్రంగా వుండింది,

I was in my early 20s, and I wore a kaftan.

ఇరవైఏళ్ళప్పుడు నేను కఫ్తాన్ ధరించేదాన్ని.

I was ridiculed by some of my family and by strangers for wearing a dress.

ఓ డ్రెస్ వేసుకుంటే బయటివాళ్ళే కాక ఇంటివాళ్ళూ వెక్కిరించేవారు.

My defense against their comments was the default that we who don't belong,

మేం ఇక్కడివారం కామని చెప్తూ వారి పరిహాసాలను ఎదిరించేదాన్ని

the ones who are better than, get taught,

మాకంటే గొప్పవారమని చెప్పేవాళ్లు పట్టుబడిపోయేవాళ్ళు

we shrug them off and say, "They just don't know enough."

వారికింతకంటే తెలీదని విసుక్కునే వాళ్ళం.

And of course I was wrong, because my idea of wealth of knowledge

ఐతే అది తప్పు.నాదృష్టిలో జ్ఞానసంపదనేది

was based in removing yourself from Third World thinking and living.

మూడో ప్రపంచ జీవన, ఆలోచనావిధానాల నుండి దూరంగా జరగడమే.

But it took time for me to realize that my acts of pride

నావి గర్వపు పలుకులని తెలుసుకోడానికి కొంచెం సమయం పట్టింది

weren't most alive in the global cities I traipsed through,

నేనెరిగిన విశ్వనగరాల్లో ప్రచారంలో లేవు,

but in the villages where I speak the languages and play the games

కానీ గ్రామాల్లోనేను మాట్లాడే భాషలు, ఆడే ఆటలు

and feel most at home and I can say,

చాలావరకు ఇంటి వాతావరణంలానే వుండేవి

"I have seen the world,

"ప్రపంచాన్ని చూసానని చెప్పగలను,

and I know that people like me aren't alone here, we are everywhere."

నాకుతెలుసు,నాలాంటివారు ఇక్కడే కాదు అంతటా వున్నారు"

And so I used these village homes for self-reflection

అందువల్ల ఈ గ్రామాల్లోని ఇళ్లను నా ఆశలకు ప్రతిబింబాలుగా వాడుకున్నాను

and to give hope to the others who don't belong.

దీనికి చెందని వారికి ఆశలను కల్పించాను.

Indigenizing my queerness

నా ప్రత్యేకతను దేశీయం చేయడమంటే

means bridging the many exceptional parts of myself.

నాలోని ప్రత్యేకతలకు వారధి కట్టడమే.

It means honoring the fact

దానర్థం నిజాన్ని గౌరవించడం

that my tongue can contort itself to speak the Romance languages

శృంగారప్రసంగాలప్పుడు నానాలుక చలించేది

without denying or exoticizing the fact that when I am moved, it can do this:

ఖండించకుండా,దాచకుండా నిజాలను వెల్లడించగలను

It means --

దానర్థం

It means branding cattle with my mother or chopping firewood with my cousins

అంటే అమ్మతో కలిసి పశువులను మేపడం, కజిన్లతో కలిసి కట్టెలు కొట్టడం

doesn't make me any less fabulous or queer,

అవి నాప్రత్యేకతలను,ఘనతను తక్కువ చేయలేదు,

even though I'm now accustomed to rooftop shindigs, wine-paired menus

కోలాహలానికి, మందుతో భోజనాలకి నేనిప్పుడు అలవాటు పడ్డాను

and VIP lounges.

ప్రముఖుల విశ్రాంతి మందిరాలకీ.

It means wearing my pride through my grandmother's tongue,

అమ్మమ్మ మాటల్లో గర్వాన్నేఆభరణంగా ధరించాను

my mother's food, my grandfather's song,

నా తల్లి చేతివంట,తాతగారి సంగీతం,

my skin etched with stories of falling off donkeys

గాడిదల కథలతో నా చర్మం బండబారిపోయింది

and years and years and years of sleeping under a blanket of stars.

తారలనే దుప్పట్ల క్రింద ఏళ్ళతరబడి నిదురించి.

If there's any place I don't belong,

నాకు చెందని స్థలమేదైనా వుందంటే

it's in a mind where the story of me starts with the branch of me being queer

నామనస్సులోనే,అక్కడ నాకథ మొదలౌతుంది విచిత్రం అనే ఓ శాఖ తో

and not with my rural roots.

అది నా గ్రామీణ నేపథ్యంతో మాత్రం కాదు

Indigenizing my queerness means understanding

నా యొక్క ప్రత్యేకతను అర్థం చేసుకోడమంటే

that the rural is a part of me, and I am an indelible part of it.

గ్రామీణత నాలో ఒకభాగం,అలాగే నేనందులో విడదీయలేని భాగాన్ని అని అర్థం చేసుకోవడమే.
