I was the first woman president

of an African nation.

And I do believe more countries ought to try that.

Once the glass ceiling has been broken,

it can never be put back together --

however one would try to do that.

له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌وه‌ش ڕه‌نگه‌ كه‌سێك هه‌وڵی ئه‌نجامدانی ئه‌مه‌ بدات.

When I assumed the presidency of Liberia

كاتێك سه‌ركردایه‌تی لایبێریام گرته ‌ئه‌ستۆ

in January 2006,

له‌ كانوونی دووه‌می ٢٠٠٦،

we faced the tremendous challenges of a post-conflict nation:

ڕووبه‌ڕوی ئاسته‌نگی زۆر گه‌وره‌ی نه‌ته‌وه‌ 'یەک له‌ قۆناغی دوای ململانێ بوینه‌وه‌:

collapsed economy,

ئابوورییه‌كی داڕماو،

destroyed infrastructure,

ژێرخانی وێرانكراو،

dysfunctional institutions,

دامه‌زراوه‌ ی ناكرداری،

enormous debt,

قه‌رزی زۆر،

bloated civil service.

خزمه‌تگوزاری شارستانی ئاوساو.

We also faced

هه‌روه‌ها ڕووبه‌ڕوی

the challenges of those left behind.

ئه‌و ئاسته‌نگانه‌ی له ‌دوایان جێما بوون.

The primary victims of all civil wars:

قوربانییه‌ سه‌ره‌تاییه‌كانی هه‌موو جه‌نگه‌ ناوخۆییه‌كان:

women and children.

ژنان و منداڵانن.

On my first day in office,

له‌ یه‌كه‌م ڕۆژم له‌ نووسینگه‌،

I was excited ...

...وروژاوبووم

and I was exhausted.

و شه‌كه‌ت بووم.

It had been a very long climb

پیا هه‌ڵگه‌ڕانێكی زۆر درێژ بوو

to where I was.

تا گه‌یشتمه‌ ئه‌و شوێنه‌.

Women had been those who suffered most

ئه‌و كه‌سانه‌ی زۆرترین ئازاریان چه‌شتبوو ژنان بوون

in our civil conflict,

له‌ ململانێی ناوخۆییمان،

and women had been the ones to resolve it.

هه‌ر ژنانیش بوون كه‌ چاره‌سه‌ریان كرد.

Our history records

مێژوومان

many women of strength and action.

چه‌ندین ژنی به‌هێز و كرده‌یی تۆمارده‌كات.

A President of the United Nations General Assembly,

سه‌رۆكی كۆبوونه‌وه‌ گشتیه‌كانی نه‌ته‌وه‌ یه‌كگرتووه‌كان،

a renowned circuit court judge,

دادوه‌ری بەناوبانگی دادگای نۆرە،

a president of the University of Liberia.

سه‌رۆكی زانكۆی لایبێریا.

I knew that I had to form

زانیم كه‌ ده‌بوایه‌

a very strong team

تیمێكی زۆر به‌هێز پێك بێنم

with the capacity to address

له‌گه‌ڵ توانای چاره‌سه‌ركردنی

the challenges of our nation.

ئاڵەنگارییەکانی نه‌ته‌وه‌كه‌مان.

And I wanted to put women in all top positions.

ویستم ژنان له‌ ھەموو شوێنه‌ باڵاكان دابنێم.

But I knew that was not possible.

به‌ڵام ده‌مزانی ئه‌وه‌ مه‌حال بوو.

And so I settled for putting them in strategic positions.

زۆر ئاسووده‌بووم به‌ دانانیان له‌ شوێنی ستراتیجی.

I recruited a very able economist from the World Bank

ئابووریزانێكی زۆر به‌توانام له‌ بانكی جیهانی هێنا و دامە‌زراند

to be our minister of finance,

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی ببێته‌ وه‌زیری دارایی،

to lead our debt-relief effort.

بۆ سه‌ركردایه‌تیكردنی هه‌وڵی كه‌مكردنه‌وه‌ی قه‌رزه‌كانمان.

Another to be the minister of foreign affairs,

یه‌كێكیتر بۆ وه‌زیری كاروباری ده‌ره‌وه‌،

to reactivate our bilateral and multilateral relationships.

بۆ چاڵاك كردنه‌وه‌ی په‌یوه‌ندییه‌ دوو لایه‌ن و فره‌لایه‌نه‌كان.

The first woman chief of police

یه‌كه‌م ژن ده‌بێته‌ سه‌رۆكی پۆلیسه‌كان

to address the fears of our women,

بۆ چاره‌سه‌ر كردنی ترس لای ژنه‌كانمان،

who had suffered so much during the civil war.

كه‌ له‌ ماوه‌ی شه‌ڕی ناوخۆدا زۆر ئازاریان چه‌شتبوو.

Another to be the minister of gender,

یه‌كێكیتر بۆ وه‌زیری ڕه‌گه‌ز،

to be able to ensure the protection and the participation of women.

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی دڵنیای بدات بە پاراستن و و به‌شداریكردنی ژنان.

Over time,

به‌ تێپە‌ڕبوونی كات،

the minister of justice,

وه‌زیری داد،

the minister of public works,

وه‌زیری كاروباری گشتی،

the minister of agriculture,

وه‌زیری كشتوکاڵ،

the minister of commerce and industry.

وه‌زیری پیشه‌سازی و بازرگانی.

Participation in leadership

به‌شداری كردن له‌ سه‌ركردایه‌تی

was unprecedented in my administration.

له‌ ماوه‌ی حوكمی مندا بێوێنه‌ بوو.

And although I knew

هه‌رچه‌نده‌ ده‌مزانی

that there were not enough women with the experience

به‌گوێره‌ی پێویست ژنی خاوه‌ن ئه‌زمون نه‌بوو

to form an all-women cabinet --

بۆ پێكهێنانی ئه‌نجوومه‌نێكی وه‌زیران كه‌ هه‌مووی ژن بێت--

as I wanted --

وه‌ك ده‌مویست--

I settled to appoint numerous women

ژماره‌یه‌كی زۆری ژنم دامه‌زاند

in junior ministerial positions,

له‌ پۆسته‌ وه‌زارییه‌ بچووكه‌كان،

as executives,

وه‌كو به‌ڕێوبه‌ره‌ جێبه‌جێكاره‌كان،

as administrators,

وه‌كو به‌ڕێوبه‌ر

in local government,

له‌ حكومه‌تی خۆجێیی،

in diplomatic service,

له‌ خزمه‌تگوزاریی دیبلۆماسی،

in the judiciary,

له‌ دادگا،

in public institutions.

له‌ دامه‌زراوه‌ گشتییه‌كان،

It worked.

ئیشی خۆی كرد.

At the end of 2012,

له‌ كۆتایی ٢٠١٢،

our economic growth had peaked at nine percent.

گه‌شه‌سه‌ندنی ئابووریمان گه‌یشته‌ نۆ له‌سه‌د.

Our infrastructure was being reconstructed at a very fast pace.

ژیرخانی ئابوریمان دووباره‌ بنیات نرایه‌وه‌ به‌ هه‌نگاوێكی زۆر خێرا.

Our institutions were functioning again.

دامه‌زراوه‌كانمان دووباره‌ ده‌ستیان به‌ كار كرده‌وه‌.

Our debt of 4.9 billion

قه‌رزی ٤.٩ ملیاریمان

had been largely canceled.

تاراده‌یه‌كی زۆر هه‌ڵوه‌شێنرایه‌وه‌.

We had good relationships with the International Monetary Fund,

په‌یوه‌ندی زۆر باشمان له‌گه‌ڵ سندوقی دراوی نێوده‌وڵه‌تی،

the World Bank,

بانكی جیهانی،

the African Development Bank.

بانكی گه‌شه‌سه‌ندنی ئه‌فریقی هه‌بوو.

We also had good working relationships

ھەروەھا پەیوه‌ندی كاری زۆر باشمان هه‌بوو

with all our sister African countries

له‌گه‌ڵ وڵاته‌ ئه‌فریقیه‌ دراوسێكانمان

and many nations all over the world.

و چه‌ندین نه‌ته‌وه‌ی تریش له‌ سه‌رانسه‌ری جیهان.

Our women could sleep peacefully at night again,

ژنه‌كانمان دووباره‌ توانیان له‌ شه‌ودا به‌ ئارامیی بخه‌ون،

without fear.

به‌بێ ترس.

Our children were smiling again,

منداڵه‌كانمان دووباره‌ زه‌رده‌خه‌نه‌یان ده‌كرد،

as I promised them during my first inaugural address.

وه‌ك چۆن له‌ یه‌كه‌م لێدوانی ده‌ستبه‌كاربوونم به‌ڵێنم پێدابوون.

The reputation and credibility

ناوبانگ و باوه‌ڕپێكردنی

of our nation,

نه‌ته‌وه‌كه‌مان،

lost in the many years of conflict,

كه‌ له‌ چه‌ندین ساڵه‌ی ململانێ ون بوو،

were restored.

گه‌ڕێنرایه‌وه‌.

But progress is never guaranteed.

به‌ڵام پێشكه‌وتن هه‌رگیز ده‌سته‌به‌ری نییه‌.

And in our legislature, in my first term,

له‌ ئه‌نجوومه‌نی یاسادانانمان، له‌ خولی یه‌كه‌مم،

women were 14 percent.

ژنان ڕێژه‌یان سه‌دا چوارده‌ بوو.

In the second term,

له‌ خولی دووه‌مدا،

it declined to eight percent,

بۆ سه‌دا هه‌شت نزم بۆوه‌،

because the environment was increasingly toxic.

چونكه‌ ژینگه‌كه‌ زۆر زیاتر ژه‌هراوی بوو.

I had my fair shares of criticism and toxicity.

به‌شێكی دادپه‌روه‌رانه‌م له‌ ڕه‌خنه‌ و ژه‌هراویه‌تی هه‌بوو.

Nobody is perfect.

هیچ كه‌سێك كامڵ نییه‌.

But there's nothing more predictable

به‌ڵام هیچ شتێك چاوه‌ڕوانكراوتر نییه‌

than a strong woman

له‌ ژنێكی به‌هێز

who wants to change things,

كه‌ ده‌یه‌وێت شته‌كان بگۆڕێت،

who's brave to speak out,

كه‌ بۆ قسه‌كردن چاو نە‌ترسه‌،

who's bold in action.

كه‌ له‌ كردار بوێره‌.

But I'm OK with the criticism.

به‌ڵام من به‌ ڕه‌خنه‌كان ڕازیم.

I know why I made the decisions I made,

ده‌زانم بۆچی بڕیاره‌كانم داوه‌،

and I'm happy with the results.

به‌ ئه‌نجامه‌كانیشی دڵخۆشم.

But that's why more women leaders are needed.

بۆیه‌ سه‌ركرده‌ی ژنی زیاترمان پێویسته‌.

For there will always be those who will tear us down,

چونكه‌ هه‌میشه‌ كه‌سانێك هه‌ن كه‌ تێكمان ده‌شكێنن،

who will tear us apart,

كه‌ پارچه‌ پارچه‌مان ده‌كه‌ن،

because they want the status quo to remain.

چونكه‌ ده‌یانه‌وێت ئه‌و بارودۆخه‌ی ئێستا وه‌كو خۆی بمێنێته‌وه‌.

Although sub-Saharan Africa has had major breakthroughs

له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌وه‌ی باشووری بیابانی سەحارای ئه‌فریقیا چه‌ندین كۆسپی گه‌وره‌ی بڕیوه‌

in women's leadership and participation,

له‌ به‌شداریكردن و سه‌ركردایه‌تیكردنی ژنان

particularly in the legislature --

به‌ تایبه‌تی له‌ ئه‌نجوومه‌نی یاسادانان--

in parliament, as it's called --

له‌ په‌رله‌مان، به‌و شێوه‌یه‌ ناوی دێنن--

so many women,

چه‌ندین ژن،

50 percent and over, one of our nations,

په‌نجا له‌سه‌د و زیاتر، له‌ نه‌ته‌وه‌ی ئێمه‌،

well over 60 percent, the best in the world --

زیاتر له‌ شه‌ست له‌سه‌د، باشترینه‌ له‌ جیهان--

but we know that's not enough.

به‌ڵام ده‌زانین ئه‌وه‌ به‌س نییه‌.

While we must be very thankful

له‌كاتێكدا پێویسته‌ زۆر سوپاسگوزار بین

and applaud the progress we have made,

چه‌پڵه‌ بۆ ئه‌و پێشكه‌وتنه‌ لێبده‌ین كه‌ به‌ده‌ستمان هێناوه‌،

we know that there is much more work to be done.

ده‌زانین كاری زۆر زیاتر هه‌یه‌ كه‌ ئه‌نجامبدرێت.

The work will have to address the lingering vestiges

كاره‌كه‌ پێویسته‌ ئه‌و شوێن پێ به‌رده‌وامانه‌ی

of structural ...

پێكهاته‌یی له‌خۆبگرێت...

something against women.

له‌ دژی ژنان.

In too many places,

له‌ زۆر شوێندا،

political parties

پارته‌ سیاسییه‌كان

are based on patronage,

بنیات نراوه‌ له‌سه‌ر چاودێری،

patriarchy,

باوك سالاری،

misogyny

ژنه‌خوازێ

that try to keep women

كه‌ هه‌وڵ دەدەن ژنان دوور بخەنەوە

from their rightful places,

له‌ شوێنه‌ شه‌رعییه‌كانیان،

that shut them out

دووریان ده‌خه‌نه‌وه‌

from taking leadership positions.

له‌ وه‌رگرتنی پۆسته‌ سه‌ركردایه‌تییه‌كان.

Too often, women face --

زۆربه‌ی جار، ژنه‌كان رووبه‌ڕوی--

while the best performers,

له‌كاتێكدا باشترین نوێنه‌رن،

while equal or better in competence --

له‌كاتێكدا یه‌كسانن یان باشترن له‌ توانایی

unequal pay.

دەست حەقی نا یەکسان دەبنەوە.

And so we must continue to work

بۆیه‌ پێویسته‌ به‌رده‌وامبین له‌ كاركردن

to change things.

بۆ گۆڕینی شته‌كان.

We must be able to change the stereotyping.

پێویسته‌ توانای گۆڕینی بیرۆكه‌ی لاساییان هه‌بێت.

We must be able to ensure

پێویسته‌ دڵنیایی بده‌ین

that those structural barriers

له‌وه‌ی كه‌ ئه‌و به‌ربه‌سته‌ پێكهاته‌یییانه‌

that have kept women

كه‌ ژنان ده‌پارێزێت

from being able to have the equity they rightfully deserve.

له‌وه‌ی توانایان هه‌بێت ئه‌و دادپه‌روه‌ریە‌یان هه‌بێت كه‌ شایه‌نین.

And we must also work with men.

پێویسته‌ له‌گه‌ڵ پیاوانیش كاربكه‌ین.

Because increasingly,

چونكه‌ زیاتر و زیاتر،

there is recognition

دانپێانانێك هه‌یه‌

that full gender equity

كه‌ دادپه‌روه‌ری له‌نێوان هه‌ردوو ڕه‌گه‌ز

will ensure a stronger economy,

ئابوورییه‌كی به‌هێزتر ده‌سته‌به‌ر ده‌كات،

a more developed nation,

نه‌ته‌وه‌یه‌كی پێشكه‌وتووتر

a more peaceful nation.

نه‌ته‌وه‌یه‌كی ئاشتیخوازتر،

And that is why we must continue to work.

بۆیه‌ پێویسته‌ به‌رده‌وام بین له‌ كاركردن.

And that is why we're partners.

له‌به‌رئه‌وه‌شه‌ ئێمه‌ هاوبه‌شین.

I will be launching a Center for Women and Development

ناوه‌ندێك بۆ ژنان و پێشكه‌وتن ده‌كه‌مه‌وه‌

that will bring together --

كه‌

women who have started

ئه‌و ژنانه‌ كۆده‌كاته‌وه‌ كه‌ ده‌ستیان پێكردووه‌و

and are committed to their joining of leadership.

پابه‌ندن به‌ چوونه‌پاڵ سه‌ركردایه‌تی کردن.

With women who have excelled

له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌و ژنانه‌ی كه‌ له‌ هه‌مان كاتدا سه‌ركه‌وتوون و

and advanced in leadership together.

پێشكه‌وتوون له‌ سه‌ركردایه‌تیكردن.

Over a 10-year period,

له‌ماوه‌ی ١٠ ساڵ،

we strongly believe

بڕوایه‌كی به‌هێزمان هه‌یه‌ كه‌

that we will create this wave of women

ئه‌و شه‌پۆله‌ی ژنان دروست دە‌كه‌ین

who are prepared to take,

كه‌ ئاماده‌ن بۆ گرتنه ‌ئه‌ستۆی،

unabashedly,

سه‌ركردایه‌تی به‌ مه‌به‌ست و

intentional leadership and influence

كاریگه‌ری به‌بێ شه‌رمكردن

throughout society.

له‌ هه‌موو كۆمه‌ڵگاكه‌.

This is why --

له‌به‌ر ئه‌مه‌یه‌--

(Laughs)

at 81, I cannot retire.

له‌ ته‌مه‌نی ٨١ ساڵی، ناتوانم خانه‌نشین بم

Women are working for change

in Africa.

throughout the world.

له‌ هه‌موو جیهان كارده‌كه‌ن.

I will be with them,

له‌گه‌لیان ده‌بم،

and one of them,

یه‌كێك ده‌بم له‌وان،

forever.
