You know, we wake up in the morning,

Living in New York City, as I do,

it's almost as if, with so many people doing so many things

수많은 사람들이 그 많은 일을

at the same time in such close quarters,

짧은 시간안에 동시에 해내는걸 보면

it's almost like life is dealing you extra hands

out of that deck.

You're never, there's just, juxtapositions are possible

that just aren't, you don't think they're going to happen.

And you never think you're going to be the guy

사람들은 길을 가다가

who's walking down the street

이쪽 길로 걸어가는지,

and, because you choose to go down one side or the other,

반대편 길로 걸어가는지에 따라

the rest of your life is changed forever.

인생이 영원히 바뀔거라고 생각하지는 않겠지요.

And one night, I'm riding the uptown local train.

어느날 밤, 저는 도시 북쪽에서 기차를 타고 있었어요

I get on. I tend to be a little bit vigilant

지하철을 탔을 때, 저는 약간

when I get on the subway.

씩씩한 모습이었죠.

I'm not one of the people zoning out with headphones

저는 헤드폰이나 책에 집중하는 그런 편은

or a book.

아니에요.

And I get on the car, and I look, and I

차에 올라타서 주위를 둘러보다가

notice this couple,

한 커플을 봤어요.

college-aged, student-looking kids,

대학생 정도의 나이에 학생처럼 보이는 친구들이었죠.

a guy and a girl, and they're sitting next to each other,

남자와 여자는 나란히 앉아 있었는데

and she's got her leg draped over his knee,

여자가 다리를 남자의 무릎위로 올려놓고

and they're doing -- they have this little contraption,

둘이서 -- 둘이서 이런 이상한 뭔가를 하고 있었죠.

and they're tying these knots,

이렇게 매듭을 짓고 있는데

and they're doing it with one hand,

그걸 각자 한 손으로 하고 있는거에요.

they're doing it left-handed and right-handed very quickly,

둘이서 각자의 왼손과 오른손으로 빠르게 하고 있었죠.

and then she'll hand the thing to him and he'll do it.

여자가 하고나면 남자가 또 하고 그러는거죠.

I've never seen anything like this.

전 이런걸 본적이 없거든요.

It's almost like they're practicing magic tricks.

꼭 마술의 속임수를 연습하는 것 같았죠.

And at the next stop, a guy gets on the car,

다음 정류장에서, 어떤 남자가 기차에 탔어요.

and he has this sort of visiting professor look to him.

마치 이방인 교수같은 행색을 하고 있었죠.

He's got the overstuffed leather satchel

그 사람은 불룩한 가죽 가방과

and the rectangular file case and a laptop bag

사각형의 파일 상자, 그리고 노트북용 가방을 들고 있었죠.

and the tweed jacket with the leather patches,

가죽을 덧댄 트위드 상의를 입고

and — (Laughter) —

그리고.. --(웃음)--

he looks at them, and then

그 사람이 이 커플을 보더니

in a blink of an eye, he kneels down in front of them,

눈깜짝항 사이에 두 남녀 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 앉는거에요.

and he starts to say,

그러더니 이렇게 말하기 시작했어요.

"You know, listen, here's how you can do it. Look,

"내말 들어봐. 이렇게 하는거야. 봐.. .

if you do this -- " and he takes the laces out of their hand,

이렇게 하면... " 그리고는 남녀의 손에 있는 레이스를 잡더니

and instantly, he starts tying these knots,

순식간에 이런 매듭을 짓기 시작했어요.

and even better than they were doing it, remarkably.

두 남녀가 했던 것보다 놀라울 정도로 훨씬 더 잘 했어요.

And it turns out they are medical students

사실은 의과대학생인 두 사람은

on their way to a lecture about the latest

최신 봉합 수술 강의를 들으러 가는 중이었고

suturing techniques, and he's the guy giving the lecture.

그 사람은 그 강의의 교수님이었어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So he starts to tell them, and he's like,

그 사람은 두 남녀에게 말하기 시작했죠.

"No, this is very important here. You know,

"아니야, 여기 이건 굉장히 중요해.

when you're needing these knots,

바늘로 이렇게 매듭을 지으려면

it's going to be, you know, everything's

이 모든 것을

going to be happening at the same time, it's going to be --

동시에 해내야 하는거지. 그건...

you're going to have all this information coming at you,

이 과정에 대한 정보를 모두 알게 될거야.

there's going to be organs getting in the way,

어떤 장기가 방해가 되기도 하고,

it's going to be slippery,

미끌거릴 때도 있고

and

그리고

it's just very important that you be able to do these

중요한 건 너희들이 이런 것을 몇 초안에 해내야 한다는거지.

beyond second nature, each hand, left hand, right hand,

두 손을 각각 왼손, 오른손으로

you have to be able to do them without seeing your fingers."

손가락은 보지 않고도 해낼 수 있어야 하는거야."

And at that moment, when I heard that,

그 말을 들었던 순간,

I just got catapulted out of the subway car into a night

저는 지하철로부터 제가 그 사건을 겪은 그날 밤으로 간 것같은 느낌이었어요.

when I had been getting a ride in an ambulance

저는 길가에서 자상을 당하고 앰뷸런스에 실려

from the sidewalk where I had been stabbed

맨하탄에 있는 성 빈센트 병원의

to the trauma room of St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan,

응급실로 옮겨졌어요.

and what had happened was

그날 일어났던 일은

a gang had come in from Brooklyn.

브루크린의 한 갱단원으로 시작합니다.

As part of an initiation for three of their members,

신입 갱 단원 3명이 입단 행사의 하나로

they had to kill somebody,

누군가를 살인해야만 했던 겁니다.

and I happened to be the guy walking down Bleecker Street

그리고 그날 제가 우연히 브릭커가(街)에서 그 누군가가

that night,

되었던거죠.

and they jumped on me without a word.

그들은 제게 말도 없이 덤벼들었어요.

One of the very lucky things,

그나마 운이 좋았던 것은

when I was at Notre Dame, I was on the boxing team,

제가 노틀담 대학에 다닐 때, 권투팀에 있었거든요.

so I put my hands up right away, instinctively.

그래서 본능적으로 바로 손을 올려 저항했죠.

The guy on the right had a knife with a 10-inch blade,

오른쪽에 있던 녀석은 10인치(25cm)짜리 칼을 들고 있었는데

and he went in under my elbow,

그 놈이 제 팔 아래로 기어들어

and it went up and cut my inferior vena cava.

일어나면서 저의 대정맥을 찌른겁니다.

If you know anything about anatomy,

해부학에 대해 조금이라도 아신다면

that's not a good thing to get cut,

그 부분엔 상처를 입어서는 안된다는 걸 잘 아실겁니다.

and everything, of course, on the way up,

물론, 상황은 계속 되었죠.

and then — I still had my hands up —

그리고는 - 저는 팔을 계속 올리고 있었지만 -

he pulled it out and went for my neck,

칼을 잡아당겨 제 목쪽을 끌어 올렸어요.

and sunk it in up to the hilt in my neck,

칼이ㅡ 손잡이가 제 목까지 올라왔죠.

and I got one straight right punch

저는 직격으로 한방을 날려서

and knocked the middle guy out.

가운데 있는 놈을 쓰러뜨렸어요.

The other guy was still working on me,

다른 놈은 여전히 제게 달려들어 있었고

collapsing my other lung,

제 한쪽 폐쪽을 공격했죠.

and I managed to, by hitting that guy, to get a minute.

그 놈을 때린 덕에 겨우 1분쯤 벌었을겁니다.

I ran down the street and collapsed,

저는 길을 따라 도망치다 쓰러졌습니다.

and the ambulance guys intubated me on the sidewalk

앰뷸런스 요원이 노상에서 제게 삽관을 하고

and let the trauma room know

응급실에 환자가 가고 있다는걸

they had an incoming.

알렸죠.

And one of the

중대한

side effects of having major massive blood loss

대량의 출혈이 있을 때 생기는 부작용의 하나가

is you get tunnel vision,

터널 시야를 겪는 것인데요.

so I remember being on the stretcher

저는 이송용 침대에 누워서

and having a little nickel-sized cone of vision,

동전 크기의 좁은 시야만 있었다는 걸 기업합니다.

and I was moving my head around

그래서 저는 고개를 이리저리 돌렸죠.

and we got to St. Vincent's,

성 빈센트 병원에 도착해서

and we're racing down this hallway,

복도를 달려가는데

and I see the lights going,

불빛이 지나가는 걸 봤어요.

and it's a peculiar effect of memories like that.

그런건 아주 특별한 기억 효과지요.

They don't really go to the usual place that memories go.

그런 기억은 보통 기억이 저장되는 곳이 아닌 다른 곳에 저장이 됩니다.

They kind of have this vault where they're stored in high-def,

둥근 천장이 있는 금고와 같은 곳인데

and George Lucas did all the sound effects. (Laughter)

죠지 루카스가 모든 음향 효과를 냈죠. (웃음)

So sometimes, remembering them, it's like,

때로는 그런걸 기억하는게

it's not like any other kind of memories.

다른 어떤 기억과도 다르지요.

And I get into the trauma room,

저는 응급실로 이송됐고

and they're waiting for me, and the lights are there,

의료진이 기다리고 있었어요. 불빛이 있는 곳이었죠.

and I'd been able to breathe a little more now,

저는 간신히 숨쉬기가 조금 나아진 정도였는데

because the blood has left, had been filling up my lungs

제 폐를 꽉 채우고 있던 피가 조금 빠져나갔기 때문이었어요.

and I was having a very hard time breathing,

저는 숨쉬는데 상당한 어려움을 겪었는데

but now it's kind of gone into the stretcher.

지금은 그 이송 침대속으로 사라져 버린 듯하죠.

And I said, "Is there anything I can do to help?"

제가 말했어요. "제가 도울 수 있는게 뭐가 있나요?"

and — (Laughter) —

그러자 --(웃음)--

the nurse kind of had a hysterical laugh, and

간호사는 미친듯이 웃었어요.

I'm turning my head trying to see everybody,

저는 사람들을 보려고 머리를 돌렸는데

and I had this weird memory of being in college

대학에 다니던 시절의 이상한 기억이

and raising,

떠 올랐습니다.

raising money for the flood victims of Bangladesh,

대학때 방글라데시의 홍수 이재민을 위한 모금을 했던 기억이요.

and then I look over and my anesthesiologist

그리고는 제가 둘러보니 마취의사가

is clamping the mask on me, and I think,

제게 마스크를 씌우고 있었는데, 저는 그를 보고

"He looks Bangladeshi," — (Laughter) —

"방글라데시 사람같다."라고 생각했어요. --(웃음)--

and I just have those two facts, and I just think,

저는 그 두가지를 기억합니다. 또 제가 했던 생각은

"This could work somehow." (Laughter)

"이거 어떻게든 잘 되겟는데."였어요. --(웃음)--

And then I go out, and

그리고, 저는 정신을 잃었고

they work on me for the rest of the night,

사람들은 그날 밤새 수술을 진행했지요.

and I needed about 40 units of blood to keep me there

수술을 하는 동안 저의 생명을 유지하려고 40통 정도의

while they did their work,

혈액이 필요했다더군요.

and the surgeon took out about a third of my intestines,

의사가 제 내장의 약 1/3 정도를 제거했답니다.

my cecum, organs I didn't know that I had,

맹장과 제게 그런게 있는지도 몰랐던 기관 같은 것들이요.

and he later told me one of the last things he did

나중에 의사가 그러는데, 수술을 하면서

while he was in there was to remove my appendix for me,

맨 마지막에 했던 일은 저를 위해 제 맹장을 드러낸 거였답니다.

which I thought was great, you know,

그건 잘한거죠. 그렇죠?

just a little tidy thing there at the end. (Laughter)

끝에 달린 그 조그만 거 말이에요. (웃음)

And I came to in the morning.

저는 아침에 의식이 돌아왔죠.

Out of anesthetic, he had let them know

마취에서 깨어나자, 의사가 사람들에게

that he wanted to be there, and he had given me

자기가 자리를 지키겠다고 했고,

about a two percent chance of living.

생존할 확률이 2%정도 된다고 생각했답니다.

So he was there when I woke up,

제가 깨어났을 때, 의사가 있었고

and it was, waking up was like

마취에서 깨어나는 건 마치

breaking through the ice into a frozen lake of pain.

얼음을 깨고 고통의 차디찬 바다로 들어가는 것 같았어요.

It was that enveloping,

온 몸이 꿰매어져 있었고

and there was only one spot that didn't hurt

딱 한 곳만 빼고는

worse than anything I'd ever felt,

제가 평생 겪어봤던 어떤 고통보다도 더한 통증이 몰려왔죠.

and it was my instep,

그 부분은 발등이었어요.

and he was holding the arch of my foot

의사는 제 발꿈치를 잡고

and rubbing the instep with his thumb.

엄지손가락으로 그 부분을 주무르고 있었어요.

And I looked up, and he's like,

제가 올려다 보니까 이렇게 말하는 듯 했죠.

"Good to see you,"

"만나서 반가워요"

and I was trying to remember what had happened

저는 무슨 일이 있었는지 기억해내려고 했습니다.

and trying to get my head around everything,

뭐든 기억해내려고 애쓰고 있었지요.

and the pain was just overwhelming, and he said,

그런데 통증은 정말 대단했어요. 의사가 그러더군요.

"You know, we didn't cut your hair. I thought

"자네의 머리카락은 자르지 않았네. 자네가

you might have gotten strength from your hair like Samson,

삼손처럼 머리카락에서 힘을 얻을지 모른다고 생각했거든,

and you're going to need all the strength you can get."

아마 젖먹던 힘까지 다 내야만 할걸세."

And in those days, my hair was down to my waist,

그 당시, 제 머리칼은 어깨까지 내려왔어요.

I drove a motorcycle, I was unmarried,

저는 미혼에, 오토바이를 타고,

I owned a bar, so those were different times. (Laughter)

술집을 가지고 있었거든요. 완전히 다른 시기였죠. (웃음)

But

그런데

I had three days of life support,

저는 생명유지 장치에 3일간 의지했고

and everybody was expecting,

모든 사람들이 예측하기로는,

due to just the massive amount of what they had had to do

그들이 해야만 했던 수많은 것들 때문에

that I wasn't going to make it,

제가 살아남지 못할거라 생각했답니다.

so it was three days of

그리고는 사흘동안

everybody was either waiting for me to die or poop,

사람들은 제가 죽거나 대변을 지리기를 기다린겁니다.

and — (Laughter) —

그리고 --(웃음)--

when I finally pooped, then that somehow,

결국 제가 대변을 지렸을 때, 그건

surgically speaking, that's like you crossed some good line,

임상적으로 말하면, 그건 양호한 선을 넘어섰다는 말인데요,

and, um — (Laughter) —

음.. (웃음)

on that day, the surgeon came in

그날 의사가 들어와서

and whipped the sheet off of me.

제 뺨을 세차게 때렸습니다.

He had three or four friends with him,

주변에 서너명 동료와 함께

and he does that, and they all look,

저를 때리고는, 모두 저를 바라보더니,

and there was no infection,

감염은 없군 이라고 했죠.

and they bend over me and they're poking and prodding,

그들은 저를 굽어보면서 여기저기 찔러도 보고 만져도 보더군요.

and they're like, "There's no hematomas, blah blah,

그 사람들은 "혈종은 없고.. 어쩌구 저쩌구,

look at the color," and they're talking amongst themselves

색깔 좀 봐" 자기들끼리 말하고 있었어요.

and I'm, like, this restored automobile

저는 마치 수선을 마친 자동차같았고

that he's just going, "Yeah, I did that." (Laughter)

의사가 마치 "그래, 내가 그랬다." 그런 식이었습니다. (웃음)

And it was just,

그건 정말,

it was amazing, because these guys are high-fiving him

그건 대단했어요. 제 결과가 얼마나 잘 나왔는지 동료들이 의사에게

over how good I turned out, you know? (Laughter)

하이 파이브를 해주고 있었어요. 아시겠죠? (웃음)

And it's my zipper, and I've still got the staples in

저는 단단히 결박되어 있는거죠. 여전히 여기저기 실밥으로 묶여

and everything.

있었거든요.

And

그리고는

later on, when I got out

나중에 제가 퇴원하고 나서는

and the flashbacks and the

기억이 되살아나

nightmares were giving me a hard time,

그 공포가 엄습해 저를 힘겹게 했어요.

I went back to him

그 의사를 찾아가

and I was sort of asking him,

물었습니다.

you know, what am I gonna do?

'제가 무엇을 할 수 있을까요?' 라고요.

And I think, kind of, as a surgeon, he basically said,

그러니까, 그 분은 의사로써, 제게 이렇게 말했죠.

"Kid, I saved your life.

"이보게, 나는 자네의 생명을 구했어.

Like, now you can do whatever you want, like,

이제부터 자네도 뭐든 원하는걸 할수 있을거야.

you gotta get on with that.

그걸 찾아야 하네.

It's like I gave you a new car

그건 마치 내가 자네에게 새 차를 한대 줬더니

and you're complaining about not finding parking.

주자할 자리를 찾지 못하겠다고 불평하는 것과 같아.

Like, just, go out, and, you know, do your best.

그러니, 가서 뭐든 최선을 다해보게.

But you're alive. That's what it's about."

어쨌든 자네는 살아있잖아. 그게 제일 중요하지."

And then I hear, "Bing-bong," and the subway doors

그때 저는 그 소리를 들었습니다. "딩-동-" 지하철의 문이

are closing, and my stop is next, and I look at these kids,

닫히고 있었고, 저는 다음 역에서 내려야 했어요. 두 젊은 친구들을 보며

and I go, I think to myself,

저 혼자 생각했습니다.

"I'm going to lift my shirt up

"웃 옷을 올려서

and show them," — (Laughter) —

이 상처를 보여줘야지." ---(웃음)---

and then I think, "No, this is the New York City subway,

그리고는 이내 "아니야, 여긴 뉴욕시 지하철이잖아,

that's going to lead to other things." (Laughter)

그러면 다른 일이 벌어지고 말걸." (웃음)

And so I just think, they got their lecture to go to.

그래서 그냥 이렇게 생각했죠. 그 친구들은 들어야 할 강의가 있지.

I step off, I'm standing on the platform,

저는 지하철을 내려 프랫품에 섰습니다.

and I feel my index finger

그리고는 제 엄지손가락으로

in

저의

the first scar that I ever got,

처음 상처 입게 된 부위를 만져봤어요.

from my umbilical cord,

배꼽으로부터

and then around that, is traced

그 주위를 지나

the last scar that I got

외과의사가 제게 만들어준

from my surgeon,

마지막 상처 부위까지요.

and I think that, that chance encounter

그리고 또 생각해봤습니다. 길에서 칼을 든

with those kids on the street with their knives

그 녀석들과 또 조우하게될 확률까지도요.

led me

그 확률이 저를

to my surgical team,

수술 팀과

and their training

그들이 받은 훈련과

and their skill

기술

and, always, a little bit of luck

그리고 항상, 약간의 행운

pushed back against chaos.

이런 것들 덕분에 대혼란을 떨쳐낼 수 있게 이끌어 준거죠.
