I think it'll be a relief to some people and a disappointment to others

I began "The Vagina Monologues" because I was worried about vaginas.

I'm very worried today about this notion, this world,

요즘 제가 이 세상에서 관심을 가지고 신경 쓰는 것은

this prevailing kind of force of security.

'안전'에 대한 전세계적인 갈망입니다

I see this word, hear this word, feel this word everywhere.

저는 어느 곳에서나 이 단어를 보고 듣고 느낍니다

Real security, security checks, security watch, security clearance.

실질적 안보, 안전 점검, 안전망, 안전에 이상없음 등

Why has all this focus on security made me feel so much more insecure?

그런데 왜 이 모든 안전에 대한 관심이 저를 더 불안하게 만드는 걸까요?

What does anyone mean when they talk about real security?

사람들이 이야기하는 '정말 안전하다'라는 말은 어떤 뜻으로 하는걸까요?

And why have we, as Americans particularly,

그리고 특히 왜 우리 미국인들은

become a nation that strives for security above all else?

다른 국민들보다 한층 더 안전을 바라게 되었을까요?

In fact, I think that security is elusive. It's impossible.

사실, 저는 완벽한 안전은 달성 불가능하다고 생각해요

We all die. We all get old. We all get sick. People leave us.

우리 모두는 죽을 것이고, 늙어갈 것이며, 병을 앓게 될 것입니다. 버림도 받겠죠.

People change us. Nothing is secure.

사람들이 우리를 변화시킵니다. 안전한 것은 없어요.

And that's actually the good news.

This is, of course, unless your whole life is about being secure.

I think that when that is the focus of your life,

these are the things that happen.

You can't travel very far or venture too far outside a certain circle.

You can't allow too many conflicting ideas into your mind at one time,

as they might confuse you or challenge you.

You can't open yourself to new experiences, new people,

new ways of doing things -- they might take you off course.

You can't not know who you are, so you cling to hard-matter identity.

자신이 누구인지 몰라서는 안되기에, 사람들은 규정된 정체성에 연연합니다.

You become a Christian, Muslim, Jew.

You're an Indian, Egyptian, Italian, American.

You're a heterosexual or a homosexual, or you never have sex.

Or at least, that's what you say when you identify yourself.

You become part of an "us."

당신은 '우리' 소속이 되고

In order to be secure, you defend against "them."

안전을 위해 '그들'에 맞서 스스로를 방어하죠

You cling to your land because it is your secure place.

자신을 위해 안전한 장소라는 이유로 땅에 집착하기도 합니다.

You must fight anyone who encroaches upon it.

누군가 그 공간을 침범한다면 여러분은 반드시 대항해서 싸울 것입니다

You become your nation. You become your religion.

자신이 국가가 되고, 종교가 됩니다.

You become whatever it is that will freeze you, numb you

뭐가 되던 간에, 여러분 스스로의 정신을 현혹하는 것 자체가 됩니다

and protect you from doubt or change.

그리고 자신에게 어떤 의구심이나 변화도 용납하지 않습니다

But all this does, actually, is shut down your mind.

그러나 이 모든 것들이 사실상 사람들의 마음을 굳게 닫아버리고 있어요

In reality, it does not really make you safer.

I was in Sri Lanka, for example, three days after the tsunami,

and I was standing on the beaches

and it was absolutely clear that, in a matter of five minutes,

a 30-foot wave could rise up

and desecrate a people, a population and lives.

All this striving for security, in fact,

has made you much more insecure

because now you have to watch out all the time.

There are people not like you -- people who you now call enemies.

당신과 다른 사람들, 당신이 적이라고 부르는 사람들이 생겼고

You have places you cannot go, thoughts you cannot think,

갈 수 없는 곳이 생겼으며, 생각해서는 안되는 생각들과

worlds that you can no longer inhabit.

더 이상 살 수 없는 세상들이 생겨나죠

And so you spend your days fighting things off, defending your territory

그래서 여러분들은 투쟁을 하고, 자신의 영역을 지키고 살며

and becoming more entrenched in your fundamental thinking.

그와 관련된 생각만 하게 됩니다.

Your days become devoted to protecting yourself.

여러분은 스스로를 보호하느라 평생을 보냅니다.

This becomes your mission. That is all you do.

그것이 사람들의 사명이 되고, 전부가 됩니다

Ideas get shorter. They become sound bytes.

따라서 사람들의 사고의 폭은 점점 좁아지며 외곬수가 됩니다.

There are evildoers and saints, criminals and victims.

세상은 악당과 성인, 범죄자와 희생자로 나뉘어 지고

There are those who, if they're not with us, are against us.

우리 편이거나 우리와 대적하는 이들로 구분됩니다

It gets easier to hurt people because you do not feel what's inside them.

다른 사람들의 감정을 알지 못하기 떄문에, 그들에게 상처를 주는 것이 쉬워져요

It gets easier to lock them up, force them to be naked, humiliate them,

다른 사람들을 가두고, 완력을 사용해서 모욕을 주며,

occupy them, invade them and kill them,

정복하고, 침략하고 죽이는 것이 쉬워집니다

because they are only obstacles now to your security.

In six years, I've had the extraordinary privilege through V-Day,

a global movement against [violence against] women,

to travel probably to 60 countries,

and spend a great deal of time in different portions.

I've met women and men all over this planet,

who through various circumstances --

war, poverty, racism, multiple forms of violence --

or have had their illusion of security forever devastated.

I've spent time with women in Afghanistan under the Taliban,

who were essentially brutalized and censored.

I've been in Bosnian refugee camps.

I was with women in Pakistan

who have had their faces melted off with acid.

I've been with girls all across America who were date-raped,

or raped by their best friends when they were drugged one night.

친구에 의해 강간을 당한 소녀들도 만났어요

One of the amazing things that I've discovered in my travels

제가 여행 중에 발견한 놀라운 것들 중 하나는

is that there is this emerging species.

새로운 유형의 사람들이 등장하고 있다는 사실입니다

I loved when he was talking about this other world that's right next to this world.

저는 이들이 기존과는 또 다른 세상에 대해 이야기할 때 정말 좋았어요

I've discovered these people, who, in V-Day world,

저는 V-데이 운동이 일어나는 지역에 사는,

we call Vagina Warriors.

우리가 버자이너 전사라고 일컫는 이들을 발견했습니다.

These particular people, rather than getting AK-47s,

이 특별한 사람들은, AK-47소총이나

or weapons of mass destruction, or machetes,

대량살상무기 또는 칼을 드는 대신에,

in the spirit of the warrior, have gone into the center, the heart of pain, of loss.

They have grieved it, they have died into it,

and allowed and encouraged poison to turn into medicine.

They have used the fuel of their pain to begin to redirect that energy

towards another mission and another trajectory.

These warriors now devote themselves and their lives

There are thousands if not millions of them on the planet.

I venture there are many in this room.

They have a fierceness and a freedom

that I believe is the bedrock of a new paradigm.

They have broken out of the existing frame of victim and perpetrator.

Their own personal security is not their end goal,

and because of that, because, rather than worrying about security,

because the transformation of suffering is their end goal,

I actually believe they are creating real safety

and a whole new idea of security.

I want to talk about a few of these people that I've met.

Tomorrow, I am going to Cairo,

and I'm so moved that I will be with women in Cairo

카이로에서 만날 여성들에게 큰 감동을 받았어요

who are V-Day women, who are opening the first safe house

그들은 V데이 여성들로서, 중동 지역에서 폭력에 시달리는 여성들을 위해

for battered women in the Middle East.

안전 가옥을 처음으로 만들었습니다

That will happen because women in Cairo made a decision to stand up

이것은 카이로의 여성들이 일어서서

and put themselves on the line,

그들 자신에 대해 솔직히 이야기하고

and talk about the degree of violence that is happening in Egypt,

이집트에서 발생하는 폭력의 심각성에 대해 알리고자 결정을 했고

and were willing to be attacked and criticized.

And through their work over the last years,

this is not only happening that this house is opening,

but it's being supported by many factions of the society

who never would have supported it.

지원을 이끌어낼 수 있었기에 가능했죠

Women in Uganda this year,

올 해 우간다의 어떤 여성들은

who put on "The Vagina Monologues" during V-Day,

V데이 운동 기간 동안 버자이너 모놀로그를 상영하고자 했는데

actually evoked the wrath of the government.

우간다 정부는 이러한 행동에 분노를 표했습니다.

And, I love this story so much.

저는 이 이야기를 정말 좋아하는데요

There was a cabinet meeting and a meeting of the presidents

우간다에서 버자이너 모놀로그 상영건에 대해 논의하기 위해

to talk about whether "Vaginas" could come to Uganda.

장관들과 각료들의 회의가 열렸습니다

And in this meeting -- it went on for weeks in the press,

그리고 격렬한 토론이 있었던 2주간의 회의기간 동안에

two weeks where there was huge discussion.

이 연극은 계속 언론의 조명을 받았습니다.

The government finally made a decision

정부는 결국 버자이너 모놀로그

that "The Vagina Monologues" could not be performed in Uganda.

But the amazing news was that because they had stood up, these women,

and because they had been willing to risk their security,

그들의 안전이 위협받을 수 있는 상황을 기꺼이 감수하게 했다는 것입니다

it began a discussion that not only happened in Uganda,

but all of Africa.

As a result, this production, which had already sold out,

every single person in that 800-seat audience, except for 10 people,

made a decision to keep the money.

They raised 10,000 dollars on a production that never occurred.

There's a young woman named Carrie Rethlefsen in Minnesota.

미네소타에서 케리 루플슨이란 젊은 여성을 만났는데

She's a high school student.

고등학교 학생이었어요.

She had seen "The Vagina Monologues" and she was really moved. And as a result,

그녀는 버자이너 모놀로그를 보고 감동을 받아서

she wore an "I heart my vagina" button to her high school in Minnesota.

'전 버자이너를 소중히 여겨요'라는 문구가 새겨진 단추를 옷에 달고 학교에 갔습니다.

She was basically threatened to be expelled from school.

그녀는 학교로부터 퇴학될 수 있다는 협박을 받았어요

They told her she couldn't love her vagina in high school,

학교측은 고등학교에서는 '버자이너를 좋아해서는 안된다'고 했고

that it was not a legal thing, that it was not a moral thing,

그것은 불법은 아니지만 비도덕적이며

that it was not a good thing.

좋은 것이 아니라고 말했습니다

So she really struggled with this, what to do,

because she was a senior and she was doing well in her school

and she was threatened expulsion. So what she did is she got all her friends together --

I believe it was 100, 150 students

all wore "I love my vagina" T-shirts,

and the boys wore "I love her vagina" T-shirts to school.

그리고 소년들은 '나는 그녀의 버자이너를 사랑한다'는 티셔츠를 학교에 입고 갔어요

Now this seems like a fairly, you know, frivolous,

어쩌면 이러한 행동들이 하찮고 경솔하게 보일 수도 있겠지만

but what happened as a result of that, is that that school now

결과적으로 학교는 이제

is forming a sex education class. It's beginning to talk about sex,

성교육 수업을 개설하고, 성에 대해 이야기하기 시작했고

it's beginning to look at why it would be wrong

여고생이 버자이너에 대한 이야기나 본인의

for a young high school girl to talk about her vagina publicly

버자이너를 좋아한다는 이야기를 공개적으로

or to say that she loved her vagina publicly.

하는 일이 어째서 그릇된 일인가를 고민하기 시작했습니다

I know I've talked about Agnes here before,

제가 TED에서 이전에 아그네스에 대해

but I want to give you an update on Agnes.

이야기를 했었는데 그녀의 근황을 알려드리죠

I met Agnes three years ago in the Rift Valley.

저는 리프트밸리에서 3년 전에 아그네스를 만났어요

When she was a young girl, she had been mutilated against her will.

어렸을 때 아그네스는 강제로 성기 일부를 훼손당했으며

That mutilation of her clitoris

그 일은 사실상 그녀의 삶에

had actually obviously impacted her life

명백한 영향을 끼쳤고

and changed it in a way that was devastating.

삶을 매우 힘겹게 만들었죠

She made a decision not to go and get a razor or a glass shard,

그녀는 자해를 위해 면도칼이나 유리 조각을 집어 드는 대신,

but to devote her life to stopping that happening to other girls.

For eight years, she walked through the Rift Valley.

She had this amazing box that she carried and it had a

torso of a woman's body in it, a half a torso,

and she would teach people, everywhere she went,

what a healthy vagina looked like and what a mutilated vagina looked like.

In the years that she walked, she educated parents, mothers, fathers.

걷기 시작한 3년동안 그녀는 부모들을 교육시켜서

She saved 1,500 girls from being cut.

1500명의 소녀들이 성기 훼손 당하는 것을 막아냈습니다

When V-Day met her, we asked her how we could support her

V데이가 그녀를 만나서 도움을 줄 일이 있느냐고 묻자

and she said, "Well, if you got me a Jeep,

그녀는 "제게 지프차를 주신다면, 훨씬 빠르게

I could get around a lot faster." So, we bought her a Jeep.

돌아다닐 수 있을거예요"라고 해서 우리는 지프를 사주었어요

In the year she had the Jeep, she saved 4,500 girls from being cut.

지프를 갖게 된 해에 그녀는 4500명을 구했습니다.

So, we said, what else could we do?

우리가 또 어떻게 도울 수 있겠냐고 묻자

She said, "If you help me get money, I could open a house."

그녀는 "만약 돈을 주시면, 쉼터를 열 수 있을거예요"라고 대답했죠

Three years ago, Agnes opened a safe house in Africa to stop mutilation.

3년 전에 아그네스는 아프리카에 신체 훼손을 막기 위한 쉼터를 열었답니다

When she began her mission eight years ago, she was reviled,

8년전에 이 일을 시작했을 때 아그네스는 비난과 미움을 받았고,

she was detested, she was completely slandered in her community.

지역 사회에서 완전히 매장되었습니다

I am proud to tell you that six months ago,

저는 오늘 그녀가 6개월 전에 나로크 지역의

she was elected the deputy mayor of Narok.

I think what I'm trying to say here

오늘 제가 말씀드리고자 하는 것은

is that if your end goal is security,

만약 여러분의 궁극적인 목적이 안전이라면

and if that's all you're focusing on, what ends up happening

그리고 그것이 관심을 갖는 전부라면, 결국

is that you create not only more insecurity in other people,

여러분은 다른 사람에게 더 큰 불안을 야기할 뿐 아니라

but you make yourself far more insecure.

스스로를 더 불안하게 만든다는 점입니다.

Real security is contemplating death, not pretending it doesn't exist.

진짜 안전함은 죽음에 대해 성찰할 수 있는 것이지 죽음이 존재하지 않은 척 사는 것이 아니에요

Not running from loss, but entering grief, surrendering to sorrow.

상실을 피하는 것이 아니고, 슬픔을 체험하고, 그것을 받아들이는 것입니다

Real security is not knowing something, when you don't know it.

진정한 의미의 안전은 당신이 알지 못할 때 그 사실을 인정하는 것이며

Real security is hungering for connection rather than power.

권력보다 소통을 갈구하는 것입니다

It cannot be bought or arranged or made with bombs.

돈으로 살 수 없는 것이며, 무력으로 쟁취되는 것도 아닙니다.

It is deeper, it is a process, it is acute awareness

그것은 더 심오하고, 하나의 과정이며

that we are all utterly inter-bended,

우리가 궁극적으로 깊이 연결되어 있고

and one action by one being in one tiny town

어느 작은 마을의 한 사람의 행동이 세상 여러 곳에

has consequences everywhere.

영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것을 인지하는 것입니다

Real security is not only being able

진짜 안전함은 단지 복잡하고, 애매모호하고 미스테리한 것들을

to tolerate mystery, complexity, ambiguity, but hungering for them

참을 수 있을 뿐 아니라

and only trusting a situation when they are present.

그것들이 존재하는 상황에서도 믿음을 가질 수 있는 것입니다

Something happened when I began traveling in V-Day, eight years ago. I got lost.

8년 전 V-Day때 제가 여행을 시작할 때 저는 급격한 혼란을 겪게 되었는데요

I remember being on a plane going from Kenya to South Africa,

저는 케냐발 남아프리카행 비행기 안에 있었는데

and I had no idea where I was.

제가 어디에 있는지 알 수 없었던 것으로 기억합니다.

I didn't know where I was going, where I'd come from,

저는 어디서 와서 어디로 가는지 몰라서

and I panicked. I had a total anxiety attack.

당황했고 완전히 공포감에 시달리게 되었어요

And then I suddenly realized that it absolutely didn't matter

그런데 갑자기 그 모든 것이 별로 중요하지 않다는 것을 깨닫게 되었죠

where I was going, or where I had come from

제가 어디로 가고 있든, 어디에서 왔던 간에요

because we are all essentially permanently displaced people.

우리 모두는 궁극적으로는 영원히 떠돌기 때문입니다.

All of us are refugees.

모두는 피난민인 셈입니다

We come from somewhere and we are hopefully traveling all the time,

우리는 어디로부턴가 와서 항상 새로운 장소를 찾아

moving towards a new place.

여행을 하고 있는 셈입니다

Freedom means I may not be identified as any one group,

자유란, 내가 어떤 조직 소속으로 규정되지 않음을 뜻하는 것이 아니고,

but that I can visit and find myself in every group.

모든 조직을 찾아갈 수 있으며, 그 안에서 나 자신을 발견 할 수 있음을 의미합니다.

It does not mean that I don't have values or beliefs,

자유는 제가 가치관이나 신앙이 없음을 뜻하는 것이 아니라

but it does mean I am not hardened around them.

제가 그 이념들에 의해 경직되지 않는 것을 의미합니다

I do not use them as weapons.

저는 그 이념들을 무기로 사용하지 않습니다

In the shared future, it will be just that, shared.

모든 것을 공유하는 미래에는, 자유도 함께 누릴 것입니다.

The end goal will [be] becoming vulnerable,

최종 목적은 '약해지고'

realizing the place of our connection to one another,

우리가 서로 연결되어 있다는 것을 깨닫는데 있지

rather than becoming secure, in control and alone.

혼자, 통제하며 안전함을 느끼는데 있는 것이 아닙니다

On a typical day, do you wake up with hope or gloom?

Eve Ensler: You know, I think Carl Jung once said

칼 융이 예전에 이런 말을 했는데요

that in order to survive the twentieth century,

20세기에서 살아 남기 위해서는

we have to live with two existing thoughts, opposite thoughts, at the same time.
