What images do we see from the rest of the world?

We see natural disasters,

We see refugees,

and we see horrible diseases.

Right?

We see beautiful beaches,

cute animals,

귀여운 동물

beautiful nature,

멋진 자연

cultural rites and stuff.

독특한 문화나 의식도 있죠.

And then we're supposed to make the connection in our head

우리는 이렇게 상반된 이미지를 머릿속에서 연결하여

and create a worldview out of this.

세계관을 만들어냅니다.

And how is that possible?

어떻게 이런 일이 가능한 걸까요?

I mean, the world seems so strange.

세상이 이렇게 낯설어 보이는데 말이에요.

And I don't think it is.

하지만 전 그렇게 생각하지 않아요.

I don't think the world is that strange, actually.

저는 세상이 그렇게 다르다고 생각하지 않습니다.

I've got an idea.

여러분 한번

So, imagine the world as a street,

세계를 하나의 거리라고 생각해 보세요.

where the poorest live on one end and the richest on the other,

길 끝엔 가장 가난한 사람이, 반대쪽 끝엔 가장 부유한 사람이 살고

and everyone in the world lives on this street.

나머지는 다 그 사이에 살고 있다고 가정해 봅시다.

You live there, I live there,

저도 여러분도 모두 여기 살고 있고

and the neighbors we have are the ones with the same income.

옆집에 사는 이웃들은 우리와 소득이 비슷하다고 해 보죠.

People that live in the same block as me,

그리고 나와 같은 구역에 살고 있는 사람들은

they are from other countries, other cultures, other religions.

다른 나라에서 왔고 문화와 종교가 다르다고 말이에요.

The street might look something like this.

거리는 이런 식으로 보이겠죠?

And I was curious.

그러면 의문이 하나 생깁니다.

In Sweden where I live,

저는 제가 사는 스웨덴에서

I've been meeting quite a lot of students.

꽤 많은 학생들을 만났는데요.

And I wanted to know,

제가 궁금했던 것은

where would they think they belong on a street like this?

학생들이 이 거리 어디에 속한다고 생각하는지였습니다.

So we changed these houses into people.

그래서 집을 사람들로 바꿔 봤습니다.

This is the seven billion people that live in the world.

여기 전 세계 인구 70억이 있습니다.

And just by living in Sweden, most likely you belong there,

만약 여러분이 스웨덴에 살고 있다면 그것만으로

which is the richest group.

가장 부유한 집단에 속하죠.

But the students, when you ask them,

하지만 학생들에게 물어보면

they think they are in the middle.

자신들은 중간 정도라고 답합니다.

And how can you understand the world

실제로는 고소득층이지만 스스로를 중간이라 여기고

when you see all these scary images from the world,

세계 다른 지역에 대해선 앞서 보여드린 끔찍한 모습을 보는 우리가

and you think you live in the middle, while you're actually atop?

과연 세계를 이해할 수 있을까요?

Not very easy.

쉽지는 않을 겁니다.

So I sent out photographers

그래서 저는 현재까지 세계 50개국 264가구에

to 264 homes in 50 countries -- so far, still counting --

여러 사진 작가를 보내서 같은 유형의 사진을 찍게 했는데요.

and in each home, the photographers take the same set of photos.

정말 많죠. 아직도 진행형입니다.

They take the bed,

침대

the stove,

음식 조리 기기

the toys

장난감 및

and about 135 other things.

135여개의 일상 물품을 카메라에 담았어요.

So we have 40,000 images or something at the moment,

그리하여 현재 약 4만장의 사진을 모았는데요.

and it looks something like this.

여기 보여 드리겠습니다.

Here we see, it says on the top,

맨 위에 이렇게 써 있죠.

"Families in the world by income,"

'소득별로 분류한 전 세계 가구'

and we have the street represented just beneath it, you can see.

바로 밑에는 세계를 하나의 거리로 나타내고 있어요.

And then we see some of the families we have visited.

다음으로 우리가 방문했던 집들을 볼 수 있습니다.

We have the poorer to the left, the richer to the right,

가장 가난한 가정이 좌측, 가장 부유한 가정이 우측에

and everybody else in between, as the concept says.

나머지는 아까 말씀드린대로 그 사이에 분포해 있습니다.

We can go down and see the different families we have been to so far.

쭉 내려보시면 작가들이 방문한 여러 가족의 모습이 보여요.

Here, for instance, we have a family in Zimbabwe,

예를 들어 여긴 짐바브웨

one in India, one in Russia, and one in Mexico, for instance.

여긴 인도, 러시아, 그리고 멕시코 가족도 있죠.

So we can go around and look at the families this way.

이런 방식으로 각 가정을 살펴볼 수 있습니다.

But of course, we can choose if we want to see some certain countries

물론 원하면 몇몇 나라만 골라서 비교할 수도 있어요.

and compare them,

대륙이나 물건별로 비교할 수도 있습니다.

or regions, or if we want, to see other things.

So let's go to the front doors

그럼 이 중 현관문을 골라서

and see what they look like.

실제 어떤지 살펴보죠.

Go here, and this is the world by front doors, ordered by income.

이것은 소득으로 분류한 세계 각 집 대문의 모습입니다.

And we can see the big difference

여기 인도, 필리핀, 중국, 우크라이나를 예로 들면

from India, Philippines, China, Ukraine, in these examples, for instance.

정말 다르게 생겼죠.

What if we go into the home?

집 내부는 어떨까요?

We can look at beds.

침대를 보죠.

This is what beds can look like.

대충 침대라고 할 수 있겠죠?

Doesn't look like the glossy magazines.

고급 잡지에 나오는 침대같지는 않죠?

Doesn't look like the scary images in the media.

언론을 통해 접하는 섬뜩한 이미지와도 거리가 있고요.

So remember that the students in Sweden,

아까 질문을 던졌던 스웨덴의 학생들을 떠올려봅시다.

they thought they were in the middle of the world income.

학생들은 자신의 소득 수준이 중간이라고 답했는데요.

So let's go there.

그럼 중간으로 가 봅시다.

We zoom in here by filtering the street to the middle,

필터를 가운데로 좁히면

like this,

이런 모습입니다.

and then I ask the students:

그럼 저는 학생들에게 묻죠.

Is this what your bedroom looks like?

여러분의 침실이 이런 모습인가요?

And they would actually not feel very at home.

학생들은 자신의 집과 거리가 있다고 느끼죠.

So we go down and see, do they feel more at home here?

빈곤층인 왼쪽으로 가서 다시 묻는다면 학생들은

And they would say,

"아뇨. 스웨덴 침실은 보통 이렇지 않아요." 라고 합니다.

no, this is not what a Swedish typical bedroom looks like.

We go up here,

그래서 우측으로 가면

and suddenly, they feel sort of at home.

학생들은 갑자기 집에 온 것 같은 기분을 느낍니다.

And we can see here in this image,

이 침실들은 예를 들면

we see bedrooms in China, Netherlands,

중국, 네덜란드, 한국, 프랑스, 미국의 침실입니다.

South Korea, France and the United States, for instance.

So we can click here.

If we want to know more about the family, the home in which this bed stands,

어떤 가족이 살고 있는지, 집은 어떻게 생겼는지 알고 싶다면

we can just click it and go to the family,

and we can see all the images from that family.

My personal favorite that everyone always tries to make me not show,

제가 가장 좋아하는 사진은 사실 사람들이 제발 보여주지 말라고 하는 건데

I'm going to show you now, and that's toilets,

바로 화장실 사진입니다.

남의 집 화장실을 뚫어지게 쳐다볼 수는 없잖아요?

because you're not really allowed to look at people's toilets,

그런데 여기서는 가능해요.

but now we can just do it, right?

So here (Laughter) we have a lot of toilets.

(웃음) 여기 수많은 화장실이 있어요.

They look pretty much as we're used to, right?

우리에게 너무나 익숙한 모습이죠?

And they are in China, Netherlands, United States, Nepal and so forth,

중국, 네덜란드, 미국, 네팔

Ukraine, France.

우크라이나, 프랑스 등등.

And they look pretty similar, right?

모두 굉장히 비슷하죠?

But remember, we are in the top.

하지만 필터를 오른쪽으로 설정했던 것, 잊으셨나요?

So what about checking all the toilets?

필터를 끝에서 끝으로 놓으면 어떻게 될까요?

Now it looks a bit different, doesn't it?

이제 좀 차이가 느껴지지 않나요?

So this way we can visually browse through categories of imagery,

이런 식으로 다양하고 보기 쉽게 범주화해서

데이터로 축적된 사진을 보실 수 있습니다.

using photos as data.

But not everything works as a photo.

하지만 사진으로 모든 것을 담을 수 있는 것은 아닙니다.

Sometimes it's easier to understand what people do,

때로는 사람들이 하는 행동을 이해하는 편이 더 쉽죠.

so we also do video snippets of everyday activities,

그래서 일상 생활을 담은 영상을 촬영했는데요.

such as washing hands, doing laundry,

손을 씻거나 빨래를 하거나

brushing teeth, and so on.

이를 닦는 모습 등이죠.

And I'm going to show you a short snippet of tooth-brushing,

지금부터 사람들이 이 닦는 모습을 보여드리려 합니다.

and we’re going to start at the top.

고소득층부터 시작하죠.

So we see people brushing their teeth.

네. 잘 닦고 있죠?

Pretty interesting to see

흥미로운 건

the same type of plastic toothbrush is being used in all these places

여기 사람들 모두가 다 똑같은 종류의 플라스틱 칫솔을 쓴다는 거예요.

in the same way, right?

똑같은 방법으로요. 그렇죠?

Some are more serious than others --

좀 더 진지하게 닦을 수도 있고요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

but still, the toothbrush is there.

어쨌든 모두 칫솔을 사용하고 있죠.

And then, coming down to this poorer end,

이제 좀 더 왼쪽, 즉 빈곤층으로 가 보면

then we will see people start using sticks,

여기 사람들은 막대기나

and they will sometimes use their finger to brush their teeth.

손가락을 이용해 양치질을 합니다.

So this particular woman in Malawi,

말라위에 사는 이 여성은

when she brushes her teeth,

이를 닦을 때

she scrapes some mud off from her wall

집 벽에서 긁어낸 진흙을

and she mixes it with water, and then she's brushing.

물과 섞어서 양치질을 합니다.

Therefore, in the Dollar Street material,

그래서 우리는 '달러스트리트' 시스템에

we have tagged this image

이 벽 사진을 올릴 때

not only as her wall, which it is,

'벽'뿐만 아니라

but also as her toothpaste,

'치약'이라는 태그도 같이 붙였습니다.

because that is also what she uses it for.

왜냐면 이걸 치약으로도 사용하고 있으니까요.

So we can say, in the poorer end of the street,

따라서 이 거리의 왼쪽 빈곤층 사람들은

you will use a stick or your finger,

막대기나 손가락을 이용하고

you come to the middle, you will start using a toothbrush,

중산층서부터 칫솔을 쓴다고 할 수 있겠네요.

and then you come up to the top,

고소득층에 와서야

and you will start using one each.

각자 하나씩 개인 칫솔을 쓰고요.

Pretty nice, not sharing a toothbrush with your grandma.

할머니와 칫솔을 같이 쓰지 않아서 다행입니다.

And you can also look at some countries.

국가별로 살펴볼 수도 있습니다.

Here, we have the income distribution within the US,

미국을 소득별로 분류해 살펴보죠.

most people in the middle.

대부분 중산층입니다.

We have a family we visited in the richer end, the Howards.

이 집은 고소득층에 속하는 하워드씨 가족입니다.

We can see their home here.

여기 집 사진이 보이죠.

And we also visited a family in the poorer end, down here.

그리고 여기엔 빈곤층에 해당하는 가족이 있습니다.

And then what we can do now is we can do instant comparisons

이제 두 집에 있는 각 물건들을

of things in their homes.

즉석으로 비교할 수 있습니다.

Let's look in their cutlery drawer.

싱크대 서랍을 볼까요.

So, observe the Hadleys:

해들리 가족부터 보죠.

they have all their cutlery in a green plastic box.

초록색 플라스틱 상자에 식도구들이 들어있습니다.

and they have a few different types and some of them are plastic,

여러 종류가 섞여 있고 어떤 건 플라스틱이네요.

while the Howards, they have this wooden drawer

반면 하워드 가족은 나무 서랍에

with small wooden compartments in it

그것도 종류별로 작은 나무 칸막이에

and a section for each type of cutlery.

잘 정리해 놓았네요.

We can add more families,

다른 집을 추가해

and we can see kitchen sinks,

싱크대나

or maybe living rooms.

거실을 비교할 수도 있습니다.

Of course, we can do the same in other countries.

물론 다른 국가도 똑같이 해볼 수 있습니다.

So we go to China, we pick three families.

중국으로 가서 세 가구를 살펴보죠.

we look at their houses,

집

we can look at their sofas,

소파

we can look at their stoves.

음식 조리 기기를 볼 수 있죠.

And when you see these stoves,

특히 조리 기기들을 다시 봐주세요.

I think it's obvious that it's a stupid thing

보통 우리가 다른 나라에 대해 생각하면

that usually, when we think about other countries,

어떤 행동에 그 나라만의 일관된 방식이 있을 거라 생각하는데

we think they have a certain way of doing things.

그게 얼마나 심각한 오류인지 이제 명백히 보이시나요?

But look at these stoves.

여기 조리 기기들을 보세요.

Very different, right,

천차만별이죠?

because it depends on what income level you have,

요리를 하는 방식은 바로

how you're going to cook your food.

어떤 소득층에 속하는지에 따라 결정되기 때문입니다.

But the cool thing is when we start comparing across countries.

정말 신기한 것은 국가간 비교를 할 때입니다.

So here we have China and the US.

중국과 미국을 비교해보죠.

See the big overlap between these two.

상당히 겹치는 부분이 있죠?

So we picked the two homes we have already seen in these countries,

각 국가에서 이미 보았던 가족들을 비교해 보겠습니다.

the Wus and the Howards.

우씨 가족과 하워드씨 가족입니다.

Standing in their bedroom,

침실만 놓고 보면

pretty hard to tell which one is China and which one is the US, right?

어느 쪽이 중국이고 어느 쪽이 미국인지 분간하기가 쉽지 않죠?

Both have brown leather sofas,

양쪽 집 모두 갈색 가죽 소파가 있고

and they have similar play structures.

놀이터도 비슷합니다.

Most likely both are made in China,

뭐, 둘 다 중국산일테니

so, I mean, that's not very strange --

비슷한 게 당연하겠죠.

(Laughter)

but that is similar.

어쨌든 비슷하죠.

We can of course go down to the other end of the street,

물론 반대쪽에 겹치는 집들을 비교할 수도 있어요.

adding Nigeria.

나이지리아를 추가하면요.

So let's compare two homes in China and Nigeria.

이제 중국과 나이지리아의 두 가구를 비교해 봅시다.

Looking at the family photos,

가족 사진을 비교해서 봐주세요.

they do not look like they have a lot in common, do they?

별로 공통점이 없어 보이죠?

But start seeing their ceiling.

그런데 천장을 보세요.

They have a plastic shield and grass.

둘 다 천장이 플라스틱과 나무로 되어 있어요.

They have the same kind of sofa,

의자도 비슷하고

they store their grain in similar ways,

곡식을 저장하는 방식도 비슷하고

they're going to have fish for dinner,

저녁으로 생선을 먹는 것도 비슷해요.

and they're boiling their water in identical ways.

물도 똑같은 방법으로 끓이네요.

So if we would visit any of these homes,

만일 이 중에서 한 집을 방문하면서

there's a huge risk that we would say we know anything

'중국이나 나이지리아에서는 이걸 이렇게 한다'고 아는 듯이 말하는 것 자체가

about the specific way you do things in China or Nigeria,

엄청난 오류라는 것을 이제 아시겠죠?

while, looking at this, it's quite obvious --

이 사진에서도 보시듯

생활 방식은 국가가 아니라 소득별로 다르다는 게 명확하니까요.

this is how you do things on this income level.

That is what you can see when you go through the imagery in Dollar Street.

여러분이 '달러 스트리트' 사이트에서 볼 수 있는 것은 바로 이런 것입니다.

So going back to the figures,

이제 조금 전 보여드렸던

the seven billion people of the world,

전 세계 인구 70억 그림을 가지고

now we're going to do a quick recap.

간단히 정리하겠습니다.

We're going to look at comparisons of things in the poorest group:

먼저 최빈곤층 사람들의 일상 물건을 비교해 보겠습니다.

beds,

침대

roofs,

지붕

cooking.

요리.

And observe, in all these comparisons,

주목하실 점은 여기 비교해드리는 사진들은

일부러 지구 반대편에 있는 집끼리 모아서 비교를 하는 사진인데도

their homes are chosen

so they are in completely different places of the world.

But what we see is pretty identical.

보시는 모습은 굉장히 똑같다는 거예요.

So the poorest billion cooking

그래서 전세계 빈곤층 10억명은

would look somewhat the same in these two places;

위 두 사진과 비슷한 방식으로 음식을 한다고 할 수 있겠죠.

you might not have shoes;

신발 없이 지내고

eating, if you don't have a spoon;

수저 없이 먹고

storing salt would be similar whether you're in Asia or in Africa;

소금을 보관하는 방법도 아프리카나 아시아나 비슷할 겁니다.

and going to the toilet would be pretty much the same experience

화장실을 이용하는 것도

whether you're in Nigeria or Nepal.

나이지리아나 네팔이나 비슷하겠죠.

In the middle, we have a huge group of five billion,

중산층에는 무려 50억이 속하는데요.

but here we can see you will have electric light, most likely;

대부분 전기로 불을 밝힐 수 있죠.

you will no longer sleep on the floor;

더 이상 바닥에서 잠을 자지도 않고

you will store your salt in a container;

소금을 용기에 담아 보관하며

you will have more than one spoon;

숟가락은 한 개 이상이고

you will have more than one pen;

펜도 한 개 이상입니다.

the ceiling is no longer leaking that much;

천장은 그럭저럭 새지 않을 거고요.

you will have shoes;

신발도 있습니다.

you might have a phone,

전화도 있겠죠.

toys,

장난감도 있고

and produce waste.

쓰레기도 생기고요.

Coming to our group up here,

마지막으로 고소득층을 살펴보겠습니다.

similar shoes, Jordan, US.

요르단이나 미국이나 같은 신발을 신죠.

We have sofas, fruits, hairbrushes,

소파

과일

빗

bookshelves,

책장입니다.

toilet paper in Tanzania, Palestine,

탄자니아와 팔레스타인 휴지인데요.

hard to distinguish

사진만 놓고 보면 미국 화장실에 앉아 있는지

if we would sit in US, Palestine or Tanzania from this one.

팔레스타인이나 탄자니아에 있는지 분간하기 힘들죠.

Vietnam, Kenya:

베트남과 케냐 옷장이고요.

wardrobes, lamps, black dogs, floors, soap,

등불, 검은 개, 마루, 비누

laundry, clocks, computers,

세탁기, 시계, 컴퓨터

phones, and so on, right?

전화기 등등. 다 비슷하죠?

So we have a lot of similarities all over the world,

이렇듯 세계 각지의 사람들이 우리와 비슷하게 살고 있습니다.

and the images we see in the media,

하지만 대중 매체는 세계를 아주 낯선 곳으로 묘사합니다.

they show us the world is a very, very strange place.

그러다 '달러 스트리트'에서 세계를 들여다보면

But when we look at the Dollar Street images,

they do not look like that.

그렇게 낯설지 않죠.

So using Dollar Street,

'달러 스트리트'를 이용하면

we can use photos as data,

사진을 데이터로 활용할 수 있고

and country stereotypes --

각 국가에 대한 고정 관념도

they simply fall apart.

철저히 무너집니다.

So the person staring back at us from the other side of the world

따라서 지구 반대편에서 우리를 보고 있는 사람도

actually looks quite a lot like you.

실제로는 여러분과 상당히 비슷하다고 할 수 있죠.

And that implies both a call to action

이는 우리가 행동에 나서야 한다는 신호인 동시에

and a reason for hope.

희망을 품을 수 있는 이유입니다.
