That might not come as a surprise to some of you.

I look like a woman.

생긴 것도,

I'm dressed like one, I guess.

옷차림도 여자 같잖아요.

The thing is, I also have balls.

사실, 불알도 있는데,

And it does take a lot of nerve

용기를 많이 냈어요.

to come up here and talk to you about my genitalia.

이 자리에서 제 성기에 대한 얘기를 해 보려고요.

Just a little.

조금만요.

But I'm not talking about bravery or courage.

용기나 배짱이 있다는게 아니라,

I mean literally -- I have balls.

실제로, 제 몸엔 불알이 있습니다.

Right here,

바로 여기,

right where a lot of you have ovaries.

여성들에게 난소가 있는 자리에요.

I'm not male or female.

저는 남성도 여성도 아닌,

I'm intersex.

간성입니다.

Most people assume that you're biologically either a man or a woman,

생물학적으로 대부분 여성 또는 남성으로 생각하지만,

but it's actually a lot more complex than that.

그렇게 단순하지 않습니다.

There are so many ways somebody could be intersex.

간성일 경우는 아주 여러 가지가 있는데,

In my case, it means I was born with XY chromosomes,

저는 남성 염색체로 알려진

which you probably know as male chromosomes.

XY 염색체를 가지고 태어났어요.

And I was born with a vagina and balls inside my body.

그래서, 질과 불알을 모두 가지고 있는데,

I don't respond to testosterone,

남성 호르몬에는 반응하지 않아서

so during puberty, I grew breasts,

사춘기 때는 가슴만 커지고,

but I never got acne or body hair, body oil.

여드름, 피지, 체모 때문에 고생한 적은 없었죠.

You can be jealous of that.

샘내셔도 돼요.

(Laughter)

But even though I don't actually have a uterus --

제 몸엔 자궁이 없는데요.

I was born without one,

그냥 없이 태어나서,

so I don't menstruate, I can't have biological children.

생리도 안하고, 아이도 낳을 수 없습니다.

We put people in boxes based on their genitalia.

성기를 기준으로 우리는 사람들을 구분합니다.

Before a baby's even born, we ask whether it's a boy or a girl,

아기가 태어나기도 전에, 성별을 묻잖아요.

as if it actually matters;

마치 대단한 일처럼,

as if you're going to be less excited about having a baby

원했던 성기가 아니면, 마치 아기를 가지는 것이

if it doesn't have the genitals you wanted;

덜 기쁠 것 처럼,

as if what's between somebody's legs tells you anything about that person.

마치 다리 사이의 그것이 그 사람에 대해 말해 줄 것 처럼요.

Are they kind, generous, funny?

친절한지, 너그러운지, 재밌는지?

Smart?

똑똑한지?

Who do they want to be when they grow up?

커서 어떤 사람이 되길 원하는지?

Genitals don't actually tell you anything.

성기로 알 수 있는 건 없는데,

Yet, we define ourselves by them.

우리 자신을 규정하는 기준이 되죠.

In this society, we love putting people into boxes

우리 사회는 사람들을 틀에 가두고,

and labeling each other.

꼬리표 붙이기를 좋아합니다.

It kind of gives us a sense of belonging

어떤 소속감을 주기도,

and teaches us how to interact with one another.

서로 소통하는 법을 익히게도 하지만,

But there's one really big problem:

한 가지 아주 큰 문제는,

biological sex is not black or white.

생리학적으로 성은 둘이 아니라,

It's on a spectrum.

아주 다양하다는 사실입니다.

Besides your genitalia, you also have your chromosomes,

성기 외에도, 염색체,

your gonads, like ovaries or testicles.

난소와 고환 등의 생식선,

You have your internal sex organs,

내부 생식 기관들,

your hormone production, your hormone response

호르몬 생산과 반응,

and your secondary sex characteristics, like breast development, body hair, etc.

가슴의 발달과 체모와 같은 2차 성징 등 다양하죠.

Those seven areas of biological sex all have so much variation,

생물학적 성의 7가지 분야 모두 여러 형태로 다시 나눠지는데,

yet we only get two options:

우리에겐 그저

male or female.

여성 아니면 남성입니다.

Which is kind of absurd to me,

황당하죠.

because I can't think of a single other human trait

인간의 특성 중 두 가지 사양 밖에 없는 건

that there's only two options for:

또 없잖아요.

skin color, hair, height, eyes.

피부색, 머리카락, 키, 눈.

You can either have nose A or nose B, that's it, no other options.

두 가지 코 모양 중 하나를 고를 수 밖에 없다는 거죠.

If there are infinite ways for our bodies to look,

수없이 많은 모습,

our minds to think,

사고 방식,

personalities to act,

성격 등이 존재한다면,

wouldn't it make sense that there's that much variety

생물학적 성 또한 그만큼 다양한 것이

in biological sex, too?

이치에 맞지 않을까요?

Did you know that besides XX or XY chromosomes,

XX 또는 XY 염색체가 아니라,

you could have XX and XY chromosomes?

두 가지 모두 가질 수 있다는 사실 아세요?

Or you could have an extra X -- XXY.

또는, X 하나를 더해 XXY,

Or two extra -- XXXY.

두 개를 더해 XXXY가 되는 등

Goes on from there.

끝이 없습니다.

And for those "normal" people with XX or XY,

XX 또는 XY를 가진 "정상적인" 사람들에게

what does that mean?

이것이 시사하는 건 뭘까요?

I have XY chromosomes.

저는 XY 염색체가 있는데,

If my DNA is found at the scene of a crime --

만약 제 DNA가 범죄현장에서 발견된다면,

not saying it will, but, you know, we'll see.

그럴꺼란 건 아니지만, 모르죠 또 뭐.

If my skeleton is discovered thousands of years from now,

수천 년 후의 제 유골을 보면,

I'll be labeled male.

남성으로 나올텐데,

Is that the truth?

그게 맞나요?

My balls would say so.

제 불알들은 맞다고 하겠지만,

But what about the rest of me?

제 몸의 나머지 부분들은 어쩌고요?

And what if a woman has ovarian cancer and has to have her ovaries removed?

또, 암으로 난소를 제거해야하는 여성은 어쩌죠?

Does she still qualify as a woman?

여전히 여성으로 인정될까요?

What about other intersex people who are born without balls or ovaries

불알이나 난소없이, 그 중 하나만, 아니면 둘 다 가지고

or with just one or a combination of the two?

태어난 간성들은 어쩌죠?

Where do they go?

어디에 속하는 걸까요?

Do you have to have a uterus to be a woman?

꼭 자궁이 있어야 여성일까요?

There's a lot of us who are born without one.

자궁없이 태어나는 여성들도 많잖아요.

And everyone's favorite part, genitalia:

그리고 누구나 관심이 많은 성기,

you either have one or the other, right?

다들 하나씩은 가지고 있잖아요?

You either have a six-inch-long penis that's exactly this thick,

직각으로 꼿꼿이 선 정확히 이정도 두께의

jutting straight out of the body at a 90-degree angle,

15cm 정도 되는 음경이나,

or you have a vagina that's this wide internally

안쪽으로 이만큼 벌어진,

and a clitoris that's half an inch above the vaginal opening

질 구멍 윗쪽으로 반 인치 크기의 음핵과

and labia that look exactly like they're supposed to look like,

언젠가 야동에서 본 것과 같은

according to that one porn video you watched that one time.

음순이 있는 질을 가지고 있겠죠.

You know the one.

다들 아시잖아요.

If you've been with more than one sexual partner in your lifetime,

살면서 한명 이상과 성관계를 가졌다면,

and you line them up, one by one,

하나 하나 줄을 세워 놓고,

I guarantee you can identify them just by their genitalia.

장담컨데, 성기만 보고 누가 누군지 알 수 있을거에요.

(Laughter)

Think about it.

All different, right?

다 다르죠, 그쵸?

The sex and gender binary are both so ingrained in our society,

성과 성별 이분법 모두 우리 사회에 깊게 뿌리내려져,

that we never stop to think about it.

다른 생각은 할 수가 없습니다.

We just automatically place each other into one box or the other,

무슨 통과 의례처럼, 무심코 서로를

as if it actually matters.

어떤 틀에 가두는데,

Until somebody comes along to make you question it.

누군가 나타나 고민하게 만들기 전까지요.

And if you're thinking that I'm the exception, an anomaly, an outlier:

만약 예외나 비정상, 또는 이단자라고 생각한다면,

intersex people represent around two percent of the population.

전체 인구의 2프로는 간성이란 걸 기억하세요.

That's the same percentage as genetic redheads.

선천적인 빨강머리들과 같은 비율이죠.

It's about 150 million people, roughly,

대략 1억 5천만 명 정도인데,

which is more than the entire population of Russia.

러시아 전체 인구보다 많습니다.

So there's a lot of us, needless to say.

분명히 많은 사람들이죠.

We're not new or rare.

신인류나 희귀종이 아니라

We're just invisible.

잘 드러나지 않을 뿐입니다.

We've existed throughout every culture in history.

역사상 어느 문명에서든 존재해 왔지만,

Yet, we never talk about it.

사람들 입에 오르 내리지 않죠.

In fact, a lot of people might not know that they're intersex.

사실, 자신이 간성인 것 조차 모르는 사람들이 많습니다.

Have you had a karyotype test to determine your chromosomes?

염색체를 확인해 주는 핵형 검사를 해 보셨나요?

What about a full blood panel for all of your hormone levels?

호르몬 수치를 측정하는 혈액 패널 검사를 해 보셨나요?

A friend of mine found out last year, in his 50s.

50이 넘은 제 친구는 작년에서야 그 사실을 알게 됐습니다.

The executive director of interACT,

미국 내 간성들의 권익 단체,

which is the leading organization for intersex human rights here in the US,

interACT의 최고 책임자 또한 41살이 되어서야

she found out she was intersex at age 41.

자신이 간성인지 알게 됐다고 합니다.

Her doctors found out when she was 15,

그녀가 15살 때, 담당 의사는 이미 알았지만,

but they didn't tell her.

그녀에겐 말해주지 않았죠.

They lied and said that she had cancer,

대신 암이 있다고 거짓말을 했는데,

because that seemed like an easier option

"온전한" 여성이 아니란 사실을

than finding out she wasn't "fully" a woman.

알게 되는 것 보다 낫다고 생각했기 때문입니다.

This kind of thing happens a lot,

간성이란 사실을

where intersex people are lied to or kept in the dark about our bodies,

본인에게조차 숨기는 풍조는

which comes as a surprise to a lot of people.

많은 이들을 놀라게도 합니다.

But we live in a society that doesn't talk about sex or bodies at all,

누굴 놀릴 때 빼고, 우리는 성과 신체에 대해

unless it's to mock or shame each other.

잘 얘기하지 않죠.

I found out I was intersex at age 10,

저는 10살 때, 간성이란 사실을

and for the most part, I was fine with that information.

알게 되었는데, 별로 힘들지도

It didn't really faze me;

크게 당황스럽지도 않았어요.

I was still developing my understanding of the world.

아직 세상을 잘 몰랐었죠.

It wasn't until I got older

나이를 좀 먹어서야,

and realized I didn't fit society's expectations of me,

제 자신이 사회의 기준에 맞지 않는 비정상이란

that I didn't belong, that I was abnormal.

사실을 알게 됐습니다.

And that's when the shame started.

수치심을 갖기 시작한 때죠.

How many times have you seen kids play with the "wrong" toys

성별에 "부적합한" 장난감을 가지고 노는

for their gender?

아이들은 많잖아요?

Or try on the "wrong" clothes?

"부적합한" 옷을 입어보기도 하죠?

All the time, right?

흔히 볼 수 있잖아요?

Kids don't have these ideas about gender norm,

아이들에겐 성에 대한 기준이 따로 없고,

they don't have shame about who they're supposed to be

자신들의 모습과 좋아하는 것들에 대한

or what they're supposed to like or love.

수치심을 갖지 않습니다.

They don't care about any of this stuff.

전혀 신경쓰지 않죠.

They don't have shame until we put it on them.

우리가 가르쳐 주기 전까지는요.

I also had doctors lie to me.

저도 의사들한테 속았었어요.

At age 10, they told me that I would also get cancer

제가 10살 때, 불알을 제거하지 않으면

unless I removed my balls.

암이 생길 거라고 했으니까요.

Then they proceeded to tell me that every year.

그 말을 매년 반복했죠.

Until today, there are still doctors who want me to remove them.

지금도 여전히 그렇게 말하는 의사들이 있는데,

But there's literally no reason.

말 그대로, 별 이유없이 말이죠.

If a typical XY male, like yourself, has testicles,

XY 염색체를 가진 전형적인 남성의 고환이

and one is undescended,

제대로 자리를 못 잡으면,

there's a high chance of it becoming cancerous --

암으로 발전될 가능성이 아주 높거나,

or a higher chance of it becoming cancerous.

그렇게 될 가능성이 더 크다고 할 수 있습니다.

They need to thermoregulated.

온도 조절이 필수적이라,

So they drop down away from the body to cool off,

몸에서 멀리 떨어져 시원함을,

or they shrink back up to get warm.

안으로 오그라들어 따뜻함을 유지하죠.

Mine don't need to do that.

제것은 그럴 필요가 없는데,

They're not responding to testosterone, they're not producing sperm.

남성 호르몬에 반응하지도, 정자를 생산하지도 않아서요.

They're fine right here inside my body.

제 몸 안에 문제없이 잘 있는데,

Yet, because there's such a lack of information about intersex people,

턱없이 부족한 간성에 대한 지식으로

my doctors never understood the difference.

의사들은 그 특징을 이해하지 못했고,

They never really understood my body.

제 몸도 마찬가지였죠.

As I got older,

나이를 더 먹고,

I had another doctor tell me that I needed to have surgery on my vagina.

또 다른 의사는 제게 질 수술을 권했습니다.

She said that until I had an operation, until she operated,

수술을 받지 않으면,

I would not be able to have "normal sex" with my husband one day.

나중에 남편과 "정상적 성관계"를 가질 수 없을거라고

Her words.

말했죠.

I didn't end up going through with the operation,

결국 수술을 받지 않았는데,

and I'm incredibly grateful for that.

정말 다행이라고 생각해요.

I'm not here to talk about my sex life.

제 성생활에 대한 얘기를 하려고 나온건 아닌데,

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But let's just say it's fine.

뭐, 괜찮겠죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I'm fine, my body is fine.

저나 제 몸은 멀쩡합니다.

You actually wouldn’t be able to tell the difference

굳이 말하지 않으면,

between me and another person unless I told you;

제가 다른 사람들과 뭐가 다른지,

you wouldn't be able to tell that I was intersex unless I told you.

또 간성인지도 모를거에요.

But again, because of the lack of understanding about bodies,

다시 말해, 신체에 대한 지식의 부족으로

my doctor didn't understand the difference.

제 주치의는 그 특징을 이해하지 못했습니다.

And for the most part, my sex life is fine.

성생활에도 전 별 문제가 없습니다.

The only issue that really comes up

10살 때부터

is that sometimes, sexual situations bring up memories of doctors touching me,

제 몸을 만지작 거리던 의사들에 대한 기억이 가끔

over and over again since I was 10.

떠오르는 것 외에는 말이죠.

I've been really lucky to escape --

정말 다행이잖아요,

I didn't think I would get emotional --

이렇게 감정이 올라올 줄은 몰랐어요,

I've been really lucky to escape the physical harm

쓸데없는 수술로 몸이 축나지 않아서

that comes from these unnecessary surgeries.

정말 운이 좋았던 거죠.

But no intersex person is free from the emotional harm

하지만, 그들의 존재마저 터부시되는 사회 속에서

that comes from living in a society that tries to cover up your existence.

간성들은 정신적 고통으로부터 자유로울 수 없습니다.

Most of my intersex friends have had operations like these.

대부분의 간성 친구들이 받은 수술은

Oftentimes, they will remove testes like mine,

보통, 제것과 같은 고환을 제거하기 위한 것이었습니다.

even though my risk of testicular cancer is lower than the risk of breast cancer

제게 고환암이 생길 확률이 소인이나 가족사가 전혀 없는

in a typical woman with no predisposition, no family history.

여성에게 유방암이 생길 확률보다 훨씬 낮았는데 말이죠.

But we don't tell her to remove her breasts, do we?

그런 사람한테 가슴을 없애라고 하진 않잖아요?

It's rare to meet an intersex person that hasn't been operated on.

대부분의 간성들은 수술을 받게 되는데,

Oftentimes, these surgeries are done to improve intersex kids' lives,

간성 아이들의 보다 나은 삶을 명목으로한 이 수술은

but they usually end up doing the opposite,

오히려 그들에게

causing more harm and complications,

육체적 정신적 고통을

both physical and emotional.

안겨 주고 맙니다.

I'm not saying that doctors are bad or evil.

의사들이 나쁘거나 악하다는 것이 아니라,

It's just that we live in a society that causes some doctors to "fix"

어떤 기준에서 벗어나면 무조건 "고치려는 풍조"가

those of us who don't fit their definition of normal.

우리 사회에 만연한다는 거죠.

We're not problems that need to be fixed.

우리가 고쳐야 할 문제가 아니라,

We just live in a society that needs to be enlightened.

계몽이 필요한 사회 속에 우리가 살고 있는 거죠.

One of the ways I'm doing that

요새 저는,

is by creating a genderless puberty guidebook

성장하는 아이들의 몸에 대한 정보를 담은

that can teach kids about their bodies as they grow up.

성별이 따로 없는 사춘기 지침서를 만들고 있어요.

Not their girl bodies or their boy bodies --

남녀 구분없이 그저 그들의 몸에 대해

just their bodies.

배우는 거죠.

We often place unrealistic expectations on the things that our bodies do

우리는 종종 신체에 대한 비현실적인 기대를 갖습니다.

that are outside of our control.

통제 밖의 일인데도요.

I mean, if one man can grow a full, luxurious, hipster beard,

한 남자는 아주 탐스럽고 멋진 턱수염이 나고,

and the other can only grow a few mustache hairs,

다른 이는 겨우 몇 가닥의 콧수염 밖에 없다면,

what does that mean about who they are as men?

남성으로서 그들이 어떤 사람인지 말해 주는 건 뭘까요?

Nothing.

아무것도 없죠.

It literally, most likely, just means

말 그대로, 모낭이

that their hair follicles respond to testosterone in different ways.

남성 호르몬에 다르게 반응할 뿐인데,

Yet, how many times have you heard a man ashamed about something like this?

그걸 부끄러워하는 남성들이 정말 많잖아요?

Imagine a world where we could live in a society

우리 몸에서 일어나고 일어나지 않는 일들에 대해

that teaches us not to have shame

수치심을 갖지 않도록

about the things that our bodies do or do not do.

가르치는 사회를 상상해 보세요.

I want to change the way that we think about biological sex in this society --

쉽지 않겠지만, 생리학적 성에 대한 인식을

which is a lot to ask for.

바꿔보고 싶습니다.

You could say it's ballsy, I guess.

아주 "알찬" 생각이죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But eventually we accepted the world as round, right?

지구가 둥글다는 것도 결국 받아들여졌잖아요.

We no longer diagnose gay people with mental disorders

더 이상 동성애와 정신병을, 또 여자와 히스테리를

or women with hysteria.

동일시하지 않잖아요.

We don't think epilepsy is caused by the devil anymore, so that's cool.

악귀에 씌워 간질이 생긴다고 생각하지 않잖아요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

We constantly change and evolve, the more we understand as a society.

끊임없이 변화하고 진화하는 우리 사회에서,

And biological sex is on a spectrum.

생리학적 성은 둘이 아니라,

It's not black or white.

아주 다양하게 나타납니다.

Not only could that knowledge save intersex kids

이런 인식은 간성인 아이들을 육체적 정신적 고통에서

from physical and emotional harm,

벗어나게 할 뿐만 아니라,

I think it would help everyone else, too.

우리 모두에게 도움이 됩니다.

Who here has ever felt inadequate or ashamed

여자답지 않아서, 아니면 너무 여자다와서,

because you weren't girly enough, you were too girly,

남자답지 않아서, 아니면 너무 남자다와서,

you weren't manly enough, or too manly?

모자람이나 수치심을 가져 보신 분들 계신가요?

We constantly shame people for not fitting into a box,

우리는 끊임없이 틀에 맞지 않는 이들에게 수치심을 주지만,

but the reality is,

사실은,

I think we shame others because it prevents them from seeing

역시나 틀에 맞지 않는 자신의 모습을

that we don't fit inside our boxes, either.

감추려는 것이라고 생각해요.

And the truth is that nobody actually fits in a box,

실제로 아무도 어떤 틀에 가둘 순 없죠.

because they don't exist.

그런 틀은 존재하지 않으니까요.

This binary, this false male-female facade is something we constructed,

우리가 임의로 만들어 낸 이 형식에 불과한

we built ourselves.

남녀 구별의 이분법을

But it doesn't have to exist.

고집할 필요는 없겠죠.

We can break it down.

더 세분화 되어야 합니다.

And that's what I want to do.

그게 제 바람이죠.
