I want to tell you about the future of money.

돈의 미래에 관해 말씀드릴게요.

Let's start with a story about this culture

먼저 1900년대 초반 미크로네시아에 있었던

that lived in Micronesia in the early 1900s, called the Yap.

'얍'이란 문화 공동체 얘기부터 들려드리죠.

Now, I want to tell you about the Yap

이 공동체 얘기를 꺼낸 건

because their form of money is really interesting.

얍의 통화가 아주 흥미롭기 때문이에요.

They use these limestone discs called Rai stones.

얍에서는 '라이석'이라는 거대한 석회암 판을 화폐로 썼거든요.

Now, the Yap don't actually move these Rai stones around

실제로 이 라이석을 들고 돌아다니진 않아요.

or exchange them the way we do with our coins,

우리가 돈을 내는 것처럼 라이석으로 거래하지도 않죠.

because Rai stones can get to be pretty massive.

이 돌판이 엄청나게 크거든요.

The largest is about four tons and 12 feet across.

제일 큰 건 무게가 4톤에 지름이 약 12ft에 달하니까요.

So the Yap just keep track of who owns part of what stone.

그래서 얍 사람들은 누가 어떤 돌의 어느 부분을 소유하는지 기록해두죠.

There's a story about these sailors

선원들에 관한 얘기가 하나 있는데요.

that were transporting a stone across the ocean

그 선원들이 돌을 싣고 바다를 건너던 중에

when they ran into some trouble and the stone actually fell in.

뭔가 문제가 생겨 돌판을 바다에 빠뜨린 거예요.

The sailors got back to the main island

이후 선원들은 본토로 돌아와

and they told everyone what had happened.

주민들에게 이 사실을 알렸어요.

And everyone decided that, actually, yes,

그리고 모두 한 가지 사실에 동의했죠.

the sailors had the stone and -- why not? -- it still counted.

선원들은 돌판을 가지고 있었고, 지금이라고 아닐 이유가 뭐겠어요?

Even though it was at the bottom of the ocean,

실제로는 바다 밑으로 가라앉았지만,

it was still part of the Yap economy.

그래도 얍에 귀속된 화폐라고 본 거죠.

You might think that this was just a small culture

이걸 백 년쯤 전에 존재했던 작은 공동체 얘기로

a hundred years ago.

치부할 수 있겠지만

But things like this happen in the Western world as well,

이런 일이 서구 세계에서도 일어나고 있어요.

and the Yap actually still use a form of these stones.

그리고 얍에서는 아직도 이런 형태의 돌을 화폐로 쓰고 있죠.

In 1932, the Bank of France asked the United States

1932년에 프랑스 은행이 미국 측에

to convert their holdings from dollars into gold.

자기네 자산을 달러에서 금으로 바꿔 달라고 요청한 적이 있는데요.

But it was too inconvenient to think about actually shipping

그 많은 금을 유럽까지 배로 실어 나르는 게

all of that gold over to Europe.

보통 어려운 일이 아니잖아요.

So instead, someone went to where that gold was being stored

그래서 누군가 그 금이 있는 장소로 파견됐고

and they just labeled it as belonging to France now.

금 더미에 프랑스 소유라고 딱지를 붙여놨답니다.

And everyone agreed that France owned the gold.

그걸로 그 금이 프랑스 소유인 걸 모두가 인정한 겁니다.

It's just like those Rai stones.

라이석과 별반 다를 게 없죠.

The point I want to make with these two examples

이 두 가지 사례를 통해 말씀드리고 싶은 것은

is that there's nothing inherently valuable

원래부터 가치를 지닌 물건은 없다는 거예요.

about a dollar or a stone or a coin.

그게 달러든, 돌이든, 동전이든 관계없이요.

The only reason these things have any value

이런 물건이 가치가 있는 이유는 오직

is because we've all decided they should.

우리가 가치를 부여하기로 정했기 때문이죠.

And because we've decided that,

그만한 가치가 있다고 정했으니까

they do.

그렇게 된 겁니다.

Money is about the exchanges and the transactions

화폐는 우리가 서로 무언가를

교환하고 거래하는 일에 관한 것입니다.

that we have with each other.

Money isn't anything objective.

화폐가 그 자체로 가치 있는 것은 아니에요.

It's about a collective story that we tell each other about value.

단지 그 가치에 대해 서로 합의가 되어 있는 집단적 이야기일 뿐입니다.

A collective fiction.

말하자면 집단 허구죠.

And that's a really powerful concept.

이건 아주 강력한 개념이에요.

In the past two decades,

지난 20년 전부터

we've begun to use digital money.

우리는 디지털 화폐를 쓰기 시작했습니다.

So I get paid via direct deposit,

전 통장으로 월급을 입금받고

I pay my rent via bank transfer,

집세는 계좌 이체합니다.

I pay my taxes online.

세금도 온라인으로 내고요.

And every month,

그리고 다달이

a small amount of money is deducted from my paycheck

제 월급에서 조금씩 돈이 빠져나갑니다.

and invested in mutual funds in my retirement account.

그 돈이 상호기금과 퇴직연금 계좌로 들어가는 거죠.

All of these interactions

이 모든 거래가

are literally just changing 1's and 0's on computers.

말 그대로 컴퓨터에서 1과 0으로 치환되어 이뤄지는 겁니다.

There's not even anything physical, like a stone or a coin.

돌이나 동전처럼 손에 잡히는 물건도 필요 없죠.

Digital money makes it so that I can pay someone around the world

디지털 화폐를 쓰면 지구 반대편에 있는 사람에게도

in seconds.

몇 초면 송금할 수 있죠.

Now when this works,

이게 가능한 이유는

it's because there are large institutions underwriting every 1 or 0

거대 기관들이 있어서, 컴퓨터 상에서 이루어지는 모든 0과 1의 변화를

that changes on a computer.

보증하기 때문입니다.

And when it doesn't,

그걸 못 해낼 경우는

it's often the fault of those large institutions.

대부분 그 거대 기관들이 무엇을 잘못한 겁니다.

Or at least, it's up to them to fix the problem.

아니면 적어도 그 기관들이 문제를 바로잡아야 하지만

And a lot of times, they don't.

대부분 그냥 넘기곤 합니다.

There's a lot of friction in the system.

시스템 안에 많은 상충이 있거든요.

How long did it take the US credit card companies

미국 신용 카드 회사에서 보안 칩과 보안 식별번호를 사용하기까지

to implement chip and pin?

얼마나 걸렸나요?

Half my credit cards still don't work in Europe.

제 카드 중 절반은 아직도 유럽에서 사용하지 못합니다.

That's friction.

이것이 상충입니다.

Transferring money across borders and across currencies

다른 통화를 쓰는 국가에 송금하려고 하면

is really expensive:

An entrepreneur in India can set up an online business in minutes,

but it's hard for her to get loans and to get paid:

Our access to digital money and our ability to freely transact

is being held captive by these gatekeepers.

이런 문지기들이 중간에 버티고 있어서 쉽지 않습니다.

And there's a lot of impediments in the system slowing things down.

게다가 거래 자체를 방해하는 각종 장애물도 존재하죠.

That's because digital money isn't really mine,

그 이유는 개인이 실제로 디지털 화폐를 갖는 것이 아니기 때문입니다.

it's entries in databases that belong to my bank,

다만 은행과 신용 카드 회사, 투자 회사가 소유한

my credit card company or my investment firm.

데이터베이스의 일부로 존재하죠.

And these companies have the right to say "no."

그리고 이런 기관과 회사들은 거부권도 행사하거든요.

If I'm a PayPal merchant

제가 페이팔로 거래하는데

and PayPal wrongly flags me for fraud,

페이팔 측에서 실수로 절 사기꾼으로 분류한다 치죠.

that's it.

그럼 그걸로 끝이에요.

My account gets frozen, and I can't get paid.

제 계좌는 동결되고 대금도 못 받죠.

These institutions are standing in the way of innovation.

이 기관들이 혁신을 방해하고 있는 거예요.

How many of you use Facebook photos, Google Photos,

여러분 중 페이스북이나 구글, 혹은 인스타그램에 사진을 올리는 분이

Instagram?

몇 분이나 되나요?

My photos are everywhere.

제 사진은 많은 곳에 있어요.

They are on my phone, they're on my laptop,

휴대폰과 노트북은 물론

they're on my old phone, they're in Dropbox.

전에 쓰던 휴대폰과 드롭박스에도 저장해놨거든요.

They're on all these different websites and services.

온갖 웹사이트와 서비스를 이용해 사진을 저장해 두었습니다.

And most of these services don't work together.

하지만 이런 서비스들이 서로 연동되지는 않아요.

They don't inter-operate.

호환되지도 않고요.

And as a result,

그 결과

my photo library is a mess.

제 사진첩은 전혀 정리가 안 돼 있어요.

The same thing happens

기관이 통화 공급량을 통제해도

when institutions control the money supply.

비슷한 상황이 벌어집니다.

A lot of these services don't inter-operate,

대개 서비스들이 호환되지 않기 때문에

and as a result, this blocks what we can do with payment.

우리가 자금을 자유롭게 운용하기가 어렵고

And it makes transaction costs go up.

거래 비용은 더욱 오르죠.

So far, we've been through two phases of money.

지금껏 우린 화폐가 두 단계로 변화하는 걸 지켜봤습니다.

In an analog world, we had to deal with these physical objects,

아날로그 시대에는 물리적 대상이 있었고

and money moved at a certain speed -- the speed of humans.

화폐는 특정 속도로, 바로 인간의 속도로 움직였습니다.

In a digital world, money can reach much farther and is much faster,

디지털 시대가 되면서 화폐 통용 범위도 넓어지고 거래 속도도 빨라졌죠.

but we're at the mercy of these gatekeeper institutions.

하지만 우리 운명은 문지기 역활의 기관들 손에 쥐어져 있습니다.

Money only moves at the speed of banks.

돈은 오직 은행의 속도로 움직입니다.

We're about to enter a new phase of money.

이제 새로운 화폐의 시대가 열리려 합니다.

The future of money is programmable.

미래의 화폐는 프로그램할 수 있습니다.

When we combine software and currency,

소프트웨어와 통화를 접목하면

money becomes more than just a static unit of value,

화폐는 고정적인 가치의 단위 그 이상의 의미를 지니게 됩니다.

and we don't have to rely on institutions for security.

그땐 우리도 보안을 기관에 맡기지 않아도 될 거고요.

In a programmable world,

프로그램이 가능한 세상에서는

we remove humans and institutions from the loop.

사람과 기관의 역할이 없어집니다.

And when this happens,

그렇게 되면

we won't even feel like we're transacting anymore.

뭔가 거래하고 있단 느낌이 안 들겠죠.

Money will be directed by software,

소프트웨어가 통제권을 쥐게 될 거고

and it will just safely and securely flow.

그렇게 되면 화폐 흐름은 안전하고 견고해 질 겁니다.

Cryptocurrencies are the first step of this evolution.

이런 진화의 첫 단계가 바로 '암호화 화폐'입니다.

Cryptocurrencies are digital money

암호화 화폐도 전자 화폐인데

that isn't run by any government or bank.

정부나 은행에서 관리하진 않습니다.

It's money designed to work in a world without intermediaries.

중개자 없이 전 세계 어디서든 거래 가능한 화폐거든요.

Bitcoin is the most ubiquitous cryptocurrency,

비트코인은 가장 보편적으로 사용되는 암호화 화폐입니다.

but there are hundreds of them.

그 외에도 수백 가지는 더 있죠

There's Ethereum, Litecoin, Stellar, Dogecoin,

이더리움, 라이트코인, 스텔라, 도지코인

and those are just a few of the more popular ones.

이들이 그나마 인지도가 있는 것들이죠.

And these things are real money.

이러한 암호화 화폐는 실제 화폐와 똑같습니다.

The sushi restaurant down my street

제가 사는 동네 근처 초밥집에서는

takes Bitcoin.

비트코인을 받거든요.

I have an app on my phone that I can use to buy sashimi.

제 휴대폰에 앱이 하나 있는데 그걸로 회를 구매할 수도 있어요.

But it's not just for small transactions.

암호화 화폐가 이런 자잘한 거래에만 사용되는 건 아닙니다.

In March, there was a transaction that moved around 100,000 bitcoins.

지난 3월에는 한달에 10만 비트코인이 거래되기도 했죠.

That's the equivalent of 40 million US dollars.

미화 4,000만 달러에 해당하는 금액입니다.

Cryptocurrencies are based on a special field of mathematics

암호화 화폐는 특별한 수학 분야에 기반을 두고 있습니다.

called cryptography.

바로 암호학입니다.

Cryptography is the study of how to secure communication,

암호학은 오가는 정보를 보호하는 방법을 연구하는 학문이죠.

and it's about two really important things:

여기에 두 가지 중요한 요소가 있는데

masking information so it can be hidden in plain sight,

하나는 정보를 감춰 평상시에 눈에 띄지 않도록 하는 거고

and verifying a piece of information's source.

또 하나는 정보의 출처를 검증하는 일입니다.

Cryptography underpins so many of the systems around us.

암호학은 우리 주변의 다양한 시스템에 적용돼 있어요.

And it's so powerful that at times

the US government has actually classified it as a weapon.

미국 정부는 이것을 일종의 무기로 규정하기도 했습니다.

During World War II, breaking cryptosystems like Enigma

was critical to decoding enemy transmissions

적군의 통신 내용을 파악하는 데 무척 중요한 역할을 했죠.

and turning the tide of the war.

전세를 역전시키는 데도 한몫했고요.

Today, anyone with a modern web browser is running

요즘 최신 브라우저를 사용하는 사람이라면 누구나

a pretty sophisticated cryptosystem.

꽤 정교한 암호 체계를 사용하고 있는 거예요.

It's what we use to secure our interactions on the Internet.

그게 있어서 인터넷상에서 안전하게 거래할 수 있죠.

It's what makes it safe for us to type our passwords in

또한, 그 암호 체계 덕에 우리가 안심하고 암호를 입력하고

and to send financial information to websites.

금융 자료를 전송할 수 있는 겁니다.

So what the banks used to give us --

그러니까 지금까지는 은행을 통해

trustworthy digital money transfer --

디지털 화폐를 입출금했지만

we can now get with a clever application of cryptography.

이젠 이 기발한 암호화 앱을 활용해 우리가 직접 돈거래를 할 수 있단 얘기죠.

And this means that we don't have to rely on the banks anymore

즉, 안전한 금융 거래를 하려고 은행에 의존할 필요가

to secure our transactions.

없어진다는 뜻입니다.

We can do it ourselves.

직접 하면 되니까요.

Bitcoin is based on the very same idea that the Yap used,

비트코인 거래는 얍 사람들의 방식과 일맥상통해요.

this collective global knowledge of transfers.

금전 거래에 관한 전체적이며 집단적인 지식에 기반을 두죠.

In Bitcoin, I spend by transferring Bitcoin,

제가 비트코인을 이체하면 돈을 그만큼 쓰는 거고

and I get paid when someone transfers Bitcoin to me.

누군가 제게 돈을 내려면 비트코인을 보내면 되는 겁니다.

Imagine that we had this magic paper.

이런 마법 종이가 있다고 상상해보세요.

So the way that this paper works is I can give you a sheet of it

이 종이와 똑같은 걸 여러분에게 나눠줄 수도 있다 칩시다.

and if you write something on it,

여러분이 종이에 뭔가를 적으면

it will magically appear on my piece as well.

제 종이에도 똑같이 나타나죠.

Let's say we just give everyone this paper

모든 분에게 이 종이를 나눠줬다고 가정해볼게요.

and everyone writes down the transfers that they're doing

그리고 누구나 자신의 비트코인 거래 명세를

in the Bitcoin system.

이 종이에 적는 겁니다.

All of these transfers get copied around to everyone else's pieces of paper.

그럼 각자 적은 내용이 모든 종이에 똑같이 기재되겠죠.

And I can look at mine

그럼 전 제 종이만 봐도

and I'll have a list of all of the transfers that are happening

비트코인으로 어떤 거래가 이뤄지는지

in the entire Bitcoin economy.

다 파악할 수 있을 겁니다.

This is actually what's happening with the Bitcoin blockchain,

실제로 비트코인 블록체인에서 일어나는 일이 이것입니다.

which is a list of all of the transactions in Bitcoin.

모든 비트코인 거래 내용이 거기 기록되거든요.

Except, it's not done through paper.

하지만, 이게 종이가 아니라

It's done through computer code,

전 세계 수천 개 네트워크에서

running on thousands of networked computers

컴퓨터 코드가 돌아가면서 이뤄지는 거예요.

around the world.

그게 다른 점이죠.

All of these computers are collectively confirming

모든 컴퓨터가 비트코인의 소유주를

who owns what Bitcoin.

공동으로 확인하는 겁니다.

So the Bitcoin blockchain is core to how Bitcoin works.

그러니까 비트코인 블록체인은 비트코인 거래의 핵심인 셈이죠.

But where do bitcoins actually come from?

그런데 비트코인은 대체 어디서 만들어지는 걸까요?

Well, the code is designed to create new Bitcoin

실제로 정해진 일정에 따라 새로운 비트코인이 생산되게끔

according to a schedule.

프로그램 되어 있습니다.

And the way that it works is that to get those Bitcoin,

새로운 비트코인을 얻으려면

I have to solve a puzzle -- a random cryptographic puzzle.

무작위로 제시되는 암호 문제를 풀어야 합니다.

Imagine that we had 15 dice,

주사위가 15개 있다고 상상해보세요.

and we were throwing these dice over and over again.

이 주사위들을 반복해서 던지는 겁니다.

Whenever the dice come up all sixes,

모든 주사위가 6이 되면

we say that we win.

이기는 거죠.

This is very close to what these computers are all actually doing.

이런 원리로 컴퓨터가 작동한다고 생각하시면 돼요.

They're trying over and over again to land on the right number.

맞는 숫자가 나올 때까지 컴퓨터가 계속 시도하거든요.

And when they do,

원하던 그 숫자가 나오면

we say that they've solved the puzzle.

The computer that solves the puzzle

publishes its solution to the rest of the network

네트워크상에 해법을 공유하고

and collects its reward: new bitcoins.

보상을 얻는데, 그게 바로 새로운 비트코인이죠.

And in the act of solving this puzzle,

these computers are actually helping to secure the Bitcoin blockchain

실제로 비트코인 블록체인의 보안을 강화하는 데 도움이 됩니다.

and add to the list of transactions.

There are actually people all over the world running this software,

이 소프트웨어를 사용하는 사람들이 세계 곳곳에 있습니다.

and we call them Bitcoin miners.

그들을 비트코인 채굴가라고 하죠.

Anyone can become a Bitcoin miner.

누구나 비트코인 채굴가가 될 수 있습니다.

You can go download the software right now

지금 당장 가서 소프트웨어를 내려받아

and run it in your computer and try to collect some bitcoins.

여러분의 컴퓨터에 설치하고 비트코인 채굴 작업을 하면 되거든요.

I can't say that I would recommend it,

하지만 굳이 권하진 않을게요.

because right now, the puzzle is so hard and the network is so powerful,

현재 네트워크가 하도 강력한 데다 암호 문제가 너무 어려워서

that if I tried to mine Bitcoin on my laptop,

제가 노트북으로 비트코인을 채굴하려고 해도

I probably wouldn't see any for about two million years.

The miners, professional miners, use this special hardware

그래서 전문 채굴가들은 특수한 하드웨어를 씁니다.

that's designed to solve the puzzle really fast.

암호 문제를 빨리 풀 수 있도록 설계된 하드웨어죠.

Now, the Bitcoin network and all of this special hardware,

비트코인 네트워크와 이런 특수한 하드웨어 장비들이

there are estimates that the amount of energy it uses

사용하는 에너지양을 산출해봤더니

is equivalent to that of a small country.

작은 국가의 에너지 소비량과 맞먹는다더군요.

So, the first set of cryptocurrencies

어쨌든 1세대 암호화 화폐는

are a little bit slow and a little bit cumbersome.

조금 더디고 조금 번거롭습니다.

But the next generation is going to be so much better and so much faster.

하지만 다음 세대의 암호화 화폐는 훨씬 나아지고 빨라질 겁니다.

Cryptocurrencies are the first step

암호화 화폐는 프로그래밍 가능한 화폐를

to a world with a global programmable money.

전 세계적으로 사용하기 위한 첫 단계입니다.

And in a world with programmable money,

프로그램 가능한 화폐가 널리 통용되면

I can pay anyone else securely

안심하고 송금할 수 있을 겁니다.

without having to sign up or ask permission,

어디 등록하고 승인받을 필요도 없어질 뿐만 아니라

or do a conversion or worry about my money getting stuck.

변환 절차를 안 거쳐도 되고 돈의 흐름이 막히는 일도 없겠죠.

And I can send money around the world.

또한, 세계 어디든 돈을 보낼 수 있을 거고요.

This is a really amazing thing.

정말 놀라운 일이잖아요.

It's the idea of permission-less innovation.

승인이 필요 없는 혁신 같은 거니까요.

The Internet caused an explosion of innovation,

인터넷이 등장하면서 엄청난 혁신의 바람이 불었죠.

because it was built upon an open architecture.

인터넷이 개방된 형태로 구축됐기 때문입니다.

And just like the Internet changed the way we communicate,

인터넷의 등장으로 우리가 소통하는 방식이 달라진 것처럼

programmable money is going to change the way we pay,

프로그램 가능한 화폐는 우리가 돈을 내고 예산을 할당하며

allocate and decide on value.

가치를 평가하는 방식에 변화를 불러오겠죠.

So what kind of world does programmable money create?

Imagine a world where I can rent out my healthcare data

제약 회사에 제 의료 기록 자료를

빌려줄 수 있는 세상을 생각해보세요.

to a pharmaceutical company.

They can run large-scale data analysis

회사 측에서는 그걸로 광범위한 분석을 하고

and provide me with a cryptographic proof

암호로 된 증명서를 발급할 수 있을 겁니다.

that shows they're only using my data in a way that we agreed.

거기엔 합의된 방법으로만 제 기록을 사용한다는 조항이 포함돼 있을 거고

And they can pay me for what they find out.

성과를 거두면 저한테 대가를 지급하겠죠.

Instead of signing up for streaming services

스트리밍 서비스에 가입하거나

and getting a cable bill,

케이블 TV 요금을 내는 대신

what if my television analyzed my watching habits

TV가 제 시청 습관을 분석해

and recommended well-priced content that fit within my budget

예산에 맞는 범위에서 볼거리들을 추천해준다면

that I would enjoy?

어떨 것 같나요?

Imagine an Internet without ads,

인터넷에서 광고가 사라진다고 생각해보세요.

because instead of paying with our attention when we view content,

어떤 내용을 보고 거기에 주목하는 방식 대신

we just pay.

그냥 돈을 내는 거죠.

Interestingly, things like micro-payments

흥미롭게도, 소액 결제가 이뤄지면서

are actually going to change the way security works in our world,

보안 작동 방식에도 변화가 일어나려 하고 있습니다.

because once we're better able to allocate value,

가치를 좀 더 효율적으로 배분할 수 있게 되는 순간

people will use their money and their energies

사람들은 자신이 지닌 돈과 에너지를 좀 더 생산적인 곳에

for more constructive things.

If it cost a fraction of a cent to send an email,

would we still have spam?

We're not at this world yet,

그런 시대는 아직 오지 않았습니다.

but it's coming.

하지만 곧 올 거예요.

Right now, it's like we're in a world that is seeing the first automobile.

지금이 자동차가 처음 등장했을 때와 비슷한 상황이라고 보시면 돼요.

The first cryptocurrency, like the first car,

최초의 암호화 화폐는 초기 자동차처럼

is slow and hard to understand and hard to use.

느리고, 이해하기 어려울뿐더러 사용하기도 쉽지 않습니다.

Digital money, like the horse and carriage,

디지털 화폐는 말과 마차처럼

works pretty well,

The Internet brought us a lot of ways to waste time.
