in the western Pacific Ocean.

저의 아름다운 고향 섬이죠.

We Palauans have been here for over 3,000 years,

우리 팔라우인은 3천 년이 넘게 이곳에 살고 있어요.

living in harmony with nature in our pristine paradise environment.

태초의 낙원과 같은 자연과 조화를 이루면서 말이죠.

Palau is home to just 20,000 people,

팔라우는 고작 2만 명의 고향이지만

but we are a large ocean state with more than 300 islands,

300개가 넘는 섬이 있는 거대한 해양 국가입니다.

covering an area the size of France.

프랑스 지역을 덮을 수 있는 크기이죠.

Some of our islands are coral atolls,

그 중 몇 개 섬은 산호섬이고,

others are volcanic,

나머지는 화산섬이에요.

covered with hills, ancient forests and mangroves,

산맥, 오래된 숲과 맹그로브 나무,

all with beautiful beaches bordering the crystal-clear sea,

which is alive with incredible, rare marine life.

해변은 놀랍고 희귀한 해양 생물들로 가득차 있어요.

But our home is now threatened by climate change.

하지만 우리의 고향은 기후 변화로 위협받고 있습니다.

The climate crisis is causing sea levels to rise,

기후 변화는 해수면을 상승시키고,

and brings so much pollution to our shores.

해안가에 너무도 많은 오염물이 쓸려옵니다.

Plastics drift in from thousands of miles away,

플라스틱 쓰레기들은 수천 마일 멀리에서 떠내려와서

washing up on our beaches,

우리의 해변을 뒤덮고,

threatening our marine life.

해양 생물들을 위협하고 있습니다.

Our precious soil is being washed away by increased rain,

우리의 소중한 토양은 늘어난 강수량 때문에 휩쓸려가고,

and in other seasons,

계절이 달라지면

new droughts are having a terrible impact on our fragile ecosystems.

전례 없던 가뭄이 취약한 생태계에 심각한 영향을 미칩니다.

We warmly welcome visitors who come to our beautiful country every year.

매년 우리 나라를 방문하는 사람들을 따뜻하게 환영합니다.

We want them to enjoy Palau,

그들이 팔라우에서의 시간을 즐기기를 바라지만

but we need their help to protect our precious home

우리의 소중한 고향을 보호하고 미래 세대를 위해 보전하는 데에는

and preserve it for future generations.

그들의 도움이 필요합니다.

But visitors don't always know how to protect Palau.

하지만 방문객들은 팔라우를 보호하는 방법을 모르기도 합니다.

They don't understand

그들은 산호를 밟는 것이

that stepping on coral can badly damage our reefs.

우리의 암초들에게 해가 된다는 것을 이해하지 못합니다.

Some corals take hundreds of years to regrow.

They are sometimes careless and take protected species,

or interact with nature in harmful ways.

That's why we introduced the Palau Pledge.

그래서 ‘팔라우 서약’을 도입했습니다.

When visitors come to Palau,

방문객들이 팔라우에 오면

they must all sign an environmental pledge,

그들은 모두 환경 서약에 서명을 해야 하고

which is stamped into their passport as their visa.

그 내용은 그들의 여권 비자 항목에 찍히게 됩니다.

The pledge is a promise to the children of Palau

서약은 우리의 고향과 문화, 그리고 유산을

to preserve and respect our home, our culture and heritage.

존중하고 보존하겠다고 팔라우의 아이들에게 약속하는 것입니다.

We also hope that when they return home,

우리는 또한 그들이 집으로 돌아가면

visitors will share the idea of the pledge

집과 커뮤니티에서 실천함으로써

by practicing it at home and in their community.

그 서약에 대해 널리 알리기를 바랍니다.

Through our traditional chants,

우리의 전통 노래를 통해,

our elders have passed on

조상들은 이런 교훈을 가르쳤습니다.

that we do not inherit the land and waters from our ancestors.

우리는 조상들에게 땅과 물을 물려받은 것이 아니라

We borrow them from our children.

That's what the Palau Pledge is about.

그것이 팔라우 서약이 의미하는 바입니다.

And here it is.

서약의 내용은 다음과 같습니다.

“Children of Palau, I take this pledge as your guest

“팔라우의 아이들에게, 저는 당신들의 방문객으로서 서약합니다.

to preserve and protect your beautiful and unique island home.

당신의 아름답고 특별한 섬을 보존하고 보호할 것이며

I vow to tread lightly, act kindly and explore mindfully.

부드럽게 걷고, 친절하게 행동하며 주의하며 탐험할 것을 맹세합니다.

I shall not take what is not given.

주어지지 않은 것은 취하지 않겠습니다.

I shall not harm what does not harm me.

저에게 해를 끼치지 않는 것은 저도 해를 끼치지 않겠습니다.

The only footprints I shall leave are those that will wash away."
