Magnus Larsson: Turning dunes into architecture

It's a bit funny to be

at a conference dedicated to things not seen,

and present my proposal to build

this would hardly be an invisible structure.

And yet it's made from parts that are invisible, or near-invisible, to the naked eye:

bacteria and grains of sand.

Now, as architects we're trained to solve problems.

건축가로서 우리는 문제를 해결하는데 숙달되어 있습니다.

But I don't really believe in architectural problems;

I only believe in opportunities.

Which is why I'll show you a threat,

and an architectural response.

The threat is desertification.

My response is a sandstone wall

made from bacteria and solidified sand,

stretching across the desert.

Now, sand is a magical material

모래는 매혹적인 재료인데요,

of beautiful contradictions.

아름다운 모순점을 내포하고 있습니다.

It is simple and complex.

단순하면서 복잡하고,

It is peaceful and violent.

평온하면서도 폭력적입니다.

It is always the same, never the same,

언제나 같으면서도, 결코 같지 않는

endlessly fascinating.

무한한 매력을 지니고 있습니다.

One billion grains of sand

모래입자 10억개가

come into existence in the world each second.

매초마다 나타납니다.

That's a cyclical process.

바로 순환과정인데요,

As rocks and mountains die,

바위와 산이 사라지며,

grains of sand are born.

모래입자가 탄생하게 됩니다.

Some of those grains may then cement naturally into sandstone.

그 입자들 중 일부는 자연적으로 사암으로 굳어집니다.

And as the sandstone weathers, new grains break free.

Some of those grains may then accumulate

on a massive scale,

into a sand dune.

In a way, the static, stone mountain

becomes a moving mountain of sand.

But, moving mountains can be dangerous. Let me try and explain why.

Dry areas cover more than one third of the Earth's land surfaces.

건조지역이 지구 전체육지면적의 3분의 1 이상입니다.

Some are already deserts;

others are being seriously degraded by the sand.

Just south of the Sahara we find the Sahel.

The name means "edge of the desert."

And this is the region most closely associated with desertification.

It was here in the late '60s and early '70s

that major droughts brought three million people

to become dependent upon emergency food aid,

with about up to 250,000 dying.

This is a catastrophe waiting to happen again.

And it's one that gets very little attention.

In our accelerated media culture,

desertification is simply too slow

It's nothing like a tsunami or a Katrina:

And yet desertification

is a major threat on all continents,

affecting some 110 countries

and about 70 percent of the world's agricultural drylands.

It seriously threatens the livelihoods

of millions of people,

and especially in Africa and China.

And it is largely an issue that we've created for ourselves

through unsustainable use of scarce resources.

So, we get climate change.

그래서 기후변화가 일어났고,

We get droughts,

increased desertification,

crashing food systems, water scarcity,

파괴된 식품체계, 수자원부족,

famine, forced migration,

기근, 강제이주,

political instability, warfare, crisis.

정치적 불안, 전쟁, 위기 등에 직면하게 되었습니다.

That's a potential scenario

이것은 하나의 가상 시나리오인데요,

if we fail to take this seriously.

이 문제를 심각하게 받아들이지 않으면 일어날 일들입니다.

But, how far away is it?

그렇다면 얼마나 남은 일일까요?

I went to Sokoto in northern Nigeria

저는 나이지리아 북부의 소코토(Sokoto)로 가서

to try and find out how far away it is.

The dunes here move southward at a pace of around 600 meters a year.

That's the Sahara eating up almost [two meters] a day of the arable land,

physically pushing people away from their homes.

with the elders in Gidan-Kara,

기단카라(Gidan-Kara)에서 마을 원로분들과 찍은 사진입니다.

a tiny village outside of Sokoto.

소코토 외곽의 작은 마을이죠.

They had to move this village in 1987

이들은 1987년 마을을 옮겨야만 했는데요,

as a huge dune threatened to swallow it.

거대한 모래언덕이 마을을 집어삼키고 있었기 때문이죠.

So, they moved the entire village, hut by hut.

그래서 마을 전체를, 집 하나씩, 옮겼습니다.

This is where the village used to be.

여기가 원래 마을이 있던 곳입니다.

It took us about 10 minutes to climb up to the top of that dune,

저 모래언덕 정상에 오르는데 10분 가량 걸렸습니다.

which goes to show why they had to move to a safer location.

이것이 그들이 보다 안전한 곳으로 옮겨야만 했던 이유입니다.

That's the kind of forced migration

이게 바로 일종의 강제이주로,

that desertification can lead to.

사막화가 초래해 낸 결과입니다.

If you happen to live close to the desert border,

you can pretty much calculate how long it will be

아이들을 안전한 곳으로 옮기고,

before you have to carry your kids away,

집을 포기하고,

and abandon your home and your life as you know it.

Now, sand dunes cover only about one fifth of our deserts.

And still, those extreme environments are very good places

if we want to stop the shifting sands.

Four years ago, 23 African countries

came together to create the Great Green Wall Sahara.

사하라 사막 녹색대장벽 사업을 추진하기로 합의했습니다.

A fantastic project, the initial plan

아주 훌륭한 프로젝트입니다. 그 초기계획은

called for a shelter belt of trees to be planted

나무들로 이루어진 방어 벨트를

right across the African continent,

아프리카 대륙 전체를 가로질러 심는 것이었습니다.

from Mauritania in the west, all the way to Djibouti in the east.

서쪽끝의 모리타니아에서, 동쪽끝의 지부티까지 말이죠.

If you want to stop a sand dune from moving,

모래언덕의 이동을 막고자 할 때,

what you need to make sure to do is to stop the grains

반드시 필요한 것은 모래입자가

from avalanching over its crest.

언덕 정상에서 쏟아져내리지 않게하는 것입니다.

And a good way of doing that, the most efficient way,

좋은 방법, 즉 가장 효과적인 방법은

is to use some kind of sand catcher.

일종의 모래포획기를 사용하는 것입니다.

Trees or cacti are good for this.

나무나 선인장이 좋은데요,

But, one of the problems with planting trees is that

the people in these regions are so poor

지역 사람들이 너무 가난해서

that they chop them down for firewood.

장작으로 나무를 베어버릴 것이라는 점입니다.

Now there is an alternative to just planting trees

그저 나무를 심고, 아무도 베어내지 않으리라 생각하는 것에 대한

and hoping that they won't get chopped down.

한 가지 대안이 있습니다.

This sandstone wall that I'm proposing essentially does three things.

제가 제시하는 사암벽은 기본적으로 세 가지 역할을 합니다.

It adds roughness to the dune's surface,

모래언덕표면, 즉 표면의 결을 거칠게 하여

to the texture of the dune's surface, binding the grains.

모래입자를 잡도록 합니다.

It provides a physical support structure for the trees,

and it creates physical spaces,

habitable spaces inside of the sand dunes.

If people live inside of the green barrier

they can help support the trees, protect them from humans,

and from some of the forces of nature.

Inside of the dunes we find shade.

모래언덕 안에는 그늘진 곳이 있습니다.

We can start harvesting condensation,

대기 중의 수증기를 응결시켜 물을 얻을 수 있고,

and start greening the desert from within.

바로 그 내부에서 사막녹화에 착수할 수 있습니다.

Sand dunes are almost like ready-made buildings in a way.

모래언덕은 어떤 측면에서는 이미 만들어져 있는 건물이라고 볼 수 있습니다.

All we need to do is solidify the parts that we need to be solid,

단지 할 일은 필요한 부분을 단단히 만들어서

and then excavate the sand,

모래를 파내는 것입니다.

and we have our architecture.

그리고 나면 바로 건축물이 탄생하는 것이죠.

We can either excavate it by hand

손으로 파낼 수도 있고,

or we can have the wind excavate it for us.

바람이 그 역할을 하도록 할 수도 있습니다.

So, the wind carries the sand onto the site

바람이 모래를 옮겨

and then it carries the redundant sand away from the structure for us.

나머지 필요없는 모래를 구조물에서 쓸어버리도록 하는 것입니다.

But, by now, you're probably asking,

그런데 지금쯤 여러분은 아마도

how am I planning to solidify a sand dune?

어떻게 모래언덕을 경화시킬 것인지,

How do we glue those grains of sand together?

그리고 어떻게 저 모래입자를 결합시킬 것인지 궁금하실텐데요,

And the answer is, perhaps, that you use these guys,

바로 이것을 이용하는 것입니다.

Bacillus pasteurii,

바실루스 파스테우리(Bacillus pasteurii) 인데요,

a micro-organism that is readily available in wetlands

습지와 늪지에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 미생물로

and marshes, and does precisely that.

바로 모래입자를 결합시키는 역할을 합니다.

It takes a pile of loose sand

성긴 모래 더미를

and it creates sandstone out of it.

사암으로 바꾸어놓는 것이죠.

These images from the American Society for Microbiology show us the process.

이 사진들은 미국미생물학회의 자료인데, 바로 그 과정을 보여줍니다.

What happens is, you pour Bacillus pasteurii onto a pile of sand,

여기서 일어나는 현상은 바실루스 파스테우리 균을 모래더미에 붓게되면

and it starts filling up the voids in between the grains.

모래입자들 사이의 빈 공간을 채우기 시작합니다.

A chemical process produces calcite,

화학적 작용에 의해 방해석(calcite)*이 생성되는데요, *방해석: 탄산칼슘(CaCO3)성분의 무색투명 혹은 백색반투명 광물.

which is a kind of natural cement

이는 일종의 천연 시멘트로

that binds the grains together.

The whole cementation process takes about 24 hours.

전체교착과정에는 약 24시간이 소요됩니다.

I learned about this from a professor at U.C. Davis called Jason DeJong.

U.C. Davis 대학의 제이슨 드용 교수(Prof. Jason DeJong)를 통해 이 사실을 알게 되었는데요,

He managed to do it in a mere 1,400 minutes.

이 분이 전체과정을 단 1,400분만에 가능하게 했습니다.

Here I am, playing the part of the mad scientist,

자, 지금 보시는 것은 제가 런던 UCL에서

working with the bugs at UCL in London,

모래를 고화시키려고 미생물들과 씨름하며

trying to solidify them.

실험하고 있는 광경입니다.

So, how much would this cost?

그렇다면, 그 비용은 얼마나 될까요?

I'm not an economist, very much not,

제가 비록 경제학자는 아닙니다만,

but I did, quite literally, a back of the envelope calculation --

-- and it seems that for a cubic meter of concrete

we would have to pay in the region of 90 dollars.

And, after an initial cost of 60 bucks to buy the bacteria,

which you'll never have to pay again,

How do we construct something like this?

Well, I'll quickly show you two options.

The first is to create a kind of balloon structure,

fill it with bacteria, then allow the sand to wash over the balloon,

pop the balloon, as it were, disseminating the bacteria into the sand and solidifying it.

Then, a few years afterwards,

The second alternative would be to use injection piles.

So, we pushed the piles down through the dune,

and we create an initial bacterial surface.

We then pull the piles up through the dune

and we're able to create almost any conceivable shape inside of the sand

with the sand acting as a mold as we go up.

So, we have a way of turning sand into sandstone,

and then creating these habitable spaces inside of the desert dunes.

But, what should they look like?

Well, I was inspired, for my architectural form, by tafoni,

which look a little bit like this, this is a model representation of it.

These are cavernous rock structures that I found on the site in Sokoto.

And I realized that if I scaled them up, they would provide me

with good spatial qualities,

for ventilation, for thermal comfort, and for other things.

Now, part of the formal control over this structure

would be lost to nature, obviously,

as the bacteria do their work.

And I think this creates a kind of boundless beauty actually.

사실 이 점이 일종의 경계없는 미를 만들어낸다고 생각합니다.

I think there is really something in that articulation

제 생각에는 그 표현에 있어서

that is quite nice.

어떤 멋진 부분이 있는 것 같습니다.

We see the result, the traces, if you like,

of the Bacillus pasteurii being harnessed to sculpt the desert

into these habitable environments.

Some people believe that

어떤 이들은 믿기를

this would spread uncontrollably,

이것이 통제불가능하게 펼쳐질 수 있고

and that the bacteria would kill everything in its way.

박테리아가 그 진행과정에서 모든 것들을 죽여버릴 수도 있다고도 합니다.

That's not true at all.

하지만 절대 사실이 아닙니다.

It's a natural process. It goes on in nature today,

and the bacteria die as soon as we stop feeding them.

So, there it is --

architectural anti-desertification structures

made from the desert itself.

Sand-stopping devices, made from sand.

The world is likely to lose one third of its arable land

전세계 경작지의 3분의 1이

by the end of the century.

금세기 말까지 사라져 갈 것으로 예측됩니다.

In a period of unprecedented population growth

전례없는 인구증가와

and increased food demands, this could prove disastrous.

그로 인한 식량수요가 급증하는 오늘날, 경작지 손실은 재앙일 수 있습니다.

And quite frankly, we're putting our heads in the sand.

솔직히 말하면, 우리 모두가 현실을 외면하고 있습니다.

If nothing else, I would like for this scheme to initiate a discussion.

다른 대안이 없다면, 저는 제 안이 문제에 대한 토론의 시작이길 바랍니다.

But, if I had something like a TED wish,

it would be to actually get it built,

to start building this habitable wall,

this very, very long, but very narrow city in the desert,

built into the dunescape itself.

It's not only something that supports trees,

but something that connects people and countries together.

I would like to conclude by showing you an animation of the structure,

Now, there are many details left to explore in this scheme --

political, practical, ethical, financial.

My design, as it takes you down the rabbit hole,

is fraught with many challenges

and difficulties in the real world.

현실에서의 어려움을 내포하고 있습니다.

But, it's a beginning, it's a vision.

하지만 이것은 단지 시작이며, 제가 그리는 미래상입니다.

As Borges would have it, it's the sand.

보르헤스가 얘기한 것처럼, 바로 모래입니다.

And I think now is really the time
