As an elementary school teacher,

my mom did everything she could to ensure I had good reading skills.

This usually consisted of weekend reading lessons at our kitchen table

주말이면 친구들이랑 밖에서 노는 대신

어머님이 저를 식탁에 앉혀 놓고 읽기를 가르쳤어요.

while my friends played outside.

My reading ability improved,

덕분에 독서 능력은 향상됐지만

but these forced reading lessons didn't exactly inspire a love of reading.

어머님이 억지로 가르치신 거라 책 읽기를 그다지 좋아하지는 않았죠.

High school changed everything.

하지만 고등학생 때 모든 것이 바뀌었어요.

In 10th grade, my regular English class read short stories and did spelling tests.

고1 때 일반 영어 수업을 듣는데, 단편 소설만 읽고 맞춤법 시험만 보는 거예요.

Out of sheer boredom, I asked to be switched into another class.

수업이 너무 지루해서 다른 수업으로 바꿔 달라고 했어요.

The next semester, I joined advanced English.

그래서 그다음 학기에는 우아하게 심화반에 들어갔죠.

(Laughter)

We read two novels and wrote two book reports that semester.

그 수업은 소설 두 편을 읽고 독후감 두 편을 쓰는 거였는데

The drastic difference and rigor between these two English classes

이전 수업이랑 수준 차이가 너무 나서

angered me and spurred questions like,

화도 나고 이런 질문이 생기더라고요.

"Where did all these white people come from?"

"여기 있는 백인 애들은 다 어디서 나타난 거야?

(Laughter)

(웃음)

My high school was over 70 percent black and Latino,

우리 학교에 70% 이상이 흑인이랑 라티노였는데

but this advanced English class had white students everywhere.

영어 우열반에는 백인 학생들로 가득한 거예요.

This personal encounter with institutionalized racism

이렇게 일상화된 인종 차별을 몸소 겪고 나니

altered my relationship with reading forever.

독서에 대한 제 생각이 송두리째 바뀌었습니다.

I learned that I couldn't depend on a school, a teacher or curriculum

학교나 교사나 커리큘럼에 의존해서는

to teach me what I needed to know.

내가 알아야 할 걸 못 배운다는 걸 깨닫고

And more out of like, rebellion, than being intellectual,

현명해서라기보다는 반항심에

I decided I would no longer allow other people to dictate

누구도 제게 언제, 어떤 걸 읽으라고

명령할 수 없다고 결심했어요.

when and what I read.

And without realizing it, I had stumbled upon a key

그러다 보니 저도 모르게 우연히

어린이들이 책을 좋아할 수 있게 해 주는 열쇠를 찾았습니다.

to helping children read.

Identity.

Instead of fixating on skills

독해 실력이나 수준을 높이는 데에 집착하거나

and moving students from one reading level to another,

or forcing struggling readers to memorize lists of unfamiliar words,

읽기를 힘들어하는 아이들에게

잘 모르는 단어만 잔뜩 암기시킬 것이 아니라

we should be asking ourselves this question:

우리 자신에게 이런 질문을 해 봐야 합니다.

How can we inspire children to identify as readers?

어떻게 하면 우리 아이들이 책을 좋아하게 만들 수 있을까?

DeSean, a brilliant first-grader I taught in the Bronx,

제가 뉴욕 브롱스에서 가르친 데션이라는 아주 똑똑한 1학년 학생이 있었어요.

he helped me understand how identity shapes learning.

데션은 제게 정체성이 학습에 얼마나 영향을 미치는지 알게 해 줬어요.

One day during math, I walk up to DeSean, and I say,

한번은 수학 시간에 제가 데션에게

"DeSean, you're a great mathematician."

"데션, 너 정말 뛰어난 수학자구나!" 라고 했더니

He looks at me and responds,

저를 쳐다보며 하는 말이

"I'm not a mathematician, I'm a math genius!"

"선생님, 저 수학자 아니거든요. 수학 천재거든요!"

(Laughter)

OK DeSean, right?

"아 그렇구나."

Reading?

그런데 읽기는요?

Completely different story.

완전히 다른 이야기였어요.

"Mr. Irby, I can't read.

"선생님, 저 못 읽겠어요."

I'm never going to learn to read," he would say.

"아마 전 평생 읽는 법을 못 배울 거예요."

I taught DeSean to read,

제가 데션은 읽는 법을 가르쳤지만

but there are countless black boys who remain trapped in illiteracy.

수많은 흑인 남자아이들이 문맹에서 못 빠져나오고 있어요.

According to the US Department of Education,

미국 교육부에 따르면

more than 85 percent of black male fourth graders

4학년 흑인 남학생 85% 이상이

are not proficient in reading.

읽는 것에 어려움을 겪고 있다고 합니다.

85 percent!

85%나 된다고요!

The more challenges to reading children face,

아이들이 읽는 것에 더 어려움을 느낄수록

the more culturally competent educators need to be.

Moonlighting as a stand-up comedian for the past eight years,

지난 8년 동안 투잡으로 스탠드업 코미디언으로 활동하면서

I understand the importance of cultural competency,

which I define as the ability to translate

what you want someone else to know or be able to do

into communication or experiences that they find relevant and engaging.

Before going on stage, I assess an audience.

전 코미디 무대에 올라가기 전 항상 관객을 분석합니다.

Are they white, are they Latino?

백인인가? 라티노인가?

Are they old, young, professional, conservative?

어르신? 청년? 전문직? 보수파?

Then I curate and modify my jokes

그다음 관객의 성격에 맞춰서

based on what I think would generate the most laughter.

가장 웃긴 대사로 수정하는 거죠.

While performing in a church, I could tell bar jokes.

만약 교회 강단에서 술집 유머를 얘기한다면

But that might not result in laughter.

아무도 웃지 않을 테니까요.

(Laughter)

As a society, we're creating reading experiences for children

오늘날 우리 사회의 어린이 독서 교육은

that are the equivalent of telling bar jokes in a church.

마치 교회에서 술집 유머를 하는 것과 같아요.

And then we wonder why so many children don't read.

그러고도 왜 많은 아이들이 책을 읽지 않는지 의아해하죠.

Educator and philosopher Paulo Freire

교육가이자 사상가인 파울로 프레이리는

believed that teaching and learning should be two-way.

교육과 학습은 양방향이어야 한다고 주장했습니다.

Students shouldn't be viewed as empty buckets to be filled with facts

학생을 지식을 담기만 하는 빈 상자로 볼 것이 아니라

지식을 함께 창출하는 협력자로 보는 것이죠.

but as cocreators of knowledge.

Cookie-cutter curriculums and school policies

틀에 박힌 교육 과정과 학교 정책, 즉

that require students to sit statue-still

아이들이 교실에 똑바로 앉아 있어야 한다거나

or to work in complete silence --

정숙한 분위기에서 공부만 해야 한다는 이러한 환경은

these environments often exclude the individual learning needs,

아이들 개개인의 학습 욕구와 관심도, 강점 등을 배제하기 쉽습니다.

the interest and expertise of children.

Especially black boys.

특히 흑인 남자아이들이요.

Many of the children's books promoted to black boys

흑인 남자아이들에게 추천하는 아동 도서를 주로 보면

focus on serious topics, like slavery, civil rights and biographies.

노예, 시민권, 위인전기 같은 무거운 주제를 다루고 있어요.

Less than two percent of teachers in the United States are black males.

미국 학교에 흑인 남자 선생님의 비율은 2%도 채 되지 않고

And a majority of black boys are raised by single mothers.

흑인 남자아이들 대부분은 독신 엄마 밑에서 자라요.

There are literally young black boys who have never seen a black man reading.

흑인 남자 어른이 책 읽는 모습을 한 번도 보지 못하고 자라는 거예요.

Or never had a black man encourage him to read.

책 읽기를 북돋아 주는 흑인 어른을 한 번도 접하지 못하거나요.

What cultural factors, what social cues are present

어린 흑인 아이가 '아 책을 읽어야겠구나' 하고 느끼게 해 주는 요소를

that would lead a young black boy to conclude

도대체 우리 문화와 사회 어디에서 찾을 수 있을까요?

that reading is even something he should do?

This is why I created Barbershop Books.

그래서 저는 '이발소 도서관'을 만들었습니다.

It's a literacy nonprofit

이발소 안에 아이들이 편하게 책 읽는 공간을 만들어주는

that creates child-friendly reading spaces in barber shops.

비영리 문맹 퇴치 기관입니다.

The mission is simple:

목표는 단순해요.

to help young black boys identify as readers.

어린 흑인 남자아이들이 책을 읽게 하는 것입니다.

Lots of black boys go to the barber shop once or twice a month.

흑인 남자아이들 상당수가 한 달에 한두 번 이발소에 갑니다.

Some see their barbers more than they see their fathers.

어떤 아이들은 자기 아버지보다 이발소 아저씨 얼굴을 더 자주 봐요.

Barbershop Books connects reading to a male-centered space

이발소 도서관은 남성 중심 공간을 독서와 연결해

and involves black men and boys' early reading experiences.

흑인 남성 및 어린이들이 일찍 독서를 경험하게 해 줍니다.

This identity-based reading program

정체성에 기반을 둔 이 독서 프로그램은

uses a curated list of children's books recommended by black boys.

흑인 남자아이들이 직접 추천한 책으로 도서 목록을 만듭니다.

These are the books that they actually want to read.

아이들이 정말로 읽고 싶어 하는 책 말이에요.

Scholastic's 2016 Kids and Family Report

스콜라스틱 출판사의 2016년 어린이와 가족 독서실태 보고서에 따르면

found that the number one thing children look for when choosing a book

아이들이 책을 고를 때 첫 번째로 꼽는 것은

is a book that will make them laugh.

재미있어야 한다는 것이었습니다.

So if we're serious about helping black boys and other children to read

우리가 정말로 흑인 남자아이들을 포함한 모든 아이들이

when it's not required,

자발적으로 책을 읽게 하고 싶다면

we need to incorporate relevant male reading models

초기 읽기 교육에서부터 어른들이 함께 책을 읽어야 합니다.

into early literacy

and exchange some of the children's books that adults love so much

아동 독서 목록에서 어른들이 좋아하는 책 대신

for funny, silly or even gross books, like "Gross Greg".

웃기고 재밌는, 아니면 좀 "지저분한 그레그" 같은 책도 읽게 해줘야 해요.

"You call them boogers. Greg calls them delicious little sugars."

That laugh, that positive reaction

or gross reaction some of you just had,

black boys deserve and desperately need more of that.

흑인 남자아이들이 간절하게 원하는 게 바로 그거예요.

Dismantling the savage inequalities that plague American education

미국 교육을 병들게 하는 야만적 불평등을 해소하려면

requires us to create reading experiences

모든 아이가 다음과 같이 말할 수 있는

that inspire all children to say three words:

책 읽기 문화를 만들어야 합니다.

I'm a reader.

"책 읽는 게 좋아요!"
