So, Ma was trying to explain something to me

and the thought of a green monster coming for me was stuck in my mind.

And yet there I was, at the tip of Lower Manhattan with my mom,

just staring at her:

all of it just frightened me.

And I didn't know whether she was a monster or a hero.

So I decided to consult the Google of the day --

My mother explained that The Green Lady is actually the Statue of Liberty

Now, the part of her explanation that really messed with my young head

was the fact that, according to Ma,

long before us,

The Green Lady was actually brown,

brown like me,

and that she changed colors over the years,

Now, the part that really is intriguing about this

is that when she changed colors,

she made me think about myself.

It all made sense to me,

because as a first-generation American,

I was surrounded by immigrants.

In fact, within my immediate social circle of the people who support me,

who enrich my life,

at least two are foreign-born.

My life as a US citizen is in many ways shaped by newcomers,

미국 시민으로서 나의 삶은 이민자로 부터 많은 영향을 받고 있고

and chances are,

so is yours.

There are more than 40 million immigrants in the USA.

미국에는 4천만이 넘는 이민자들이 살고 있습니다.

According to census data,

a quarter of the nation's children have at least one foreign-born parent.

I know all these statistics because I study global migration patterns.

I'm a journalist, and for the last few years,

I've been documenting the lives of US citizens

who've lost people to deportation.

And the numbers are enormous.

From 2008 to 2016,

more than three million people were "ordered removed" --

I once asked a US soldier,

And she told me,

"Because I'm proud to defend my country."

But I pressed to know --

하지만, 저는 재촉했죠.

"Really, when you're on base,

"기지에 계시면서

and you hear bombs exploding in the distance,

멀리서 폭탄이 터지는 소리와

and you see soldiers coming back who are gravely injured,

중상을 입고 돌아오는 전우를 보는

in that moment, when you know you could be next,

바로 그 순간 다음 차례는 당신일 수도 있음을 알게 된다면

what does 'my country' mean?"

그 "우리 나라"라는 말은 과연 어떤 의미를 다가올까요?"

She looked at me.

그 군인은 나를 보고는

"My country is my wife,

"내 조국은 내 아내

my family,

내 가족

my friends, my soldiers."

내 친구들, 그리고 전우와 같습니다." 라고 하더군요.

What she was telling me

그녀의 말에서

is that "my country" is a collection of these strong relationships;

"우리나라"의 의미는 이처럼 강력한 관계나 그들의 사회적 동맹을

these social circles.

대표하고 있다고 볼 수 있습니다

When the social circles are weakened,

그들이 소속된 공통체가 약화되면

a country itself is weaker.

We're missing a crucial aspect in the debate about immigration policy.

우리는 이민정책의 논쟁에 있어 중요한 점을 간과하고 있습니다.

Rather than focusing on individuals,

개인보다는

we should focus on the circles around them,

우리는 우리가 몸담고 있는 공동체를 먼저 생각해야 합니다.

because these are the people who are left behind:

the voters, the taxpayers,

the ones who are suffering that loss.

And it's not just the children of the deported

You have brothers and sisters who are separated by borders.

You have classmates, teachers, law enforcement officers,

These are the real lives behind all these statistics

But we don't often think about them.

And I'm trying to change that.

Here's just one of the real-life stories that I've collected.

And it still haunts me.

I met Ramon and his son in 2016,

If you just look at Ramon's case,

Here's another example that illustrates those critical bonds.

A group of citizens in Philadelphia were concerned about their jobs,

because the legal owner of the restaurant where they worked

and immigration officials had picked him up.

They rallied behind him.

An immigration lawyer argued

he was too important to the local community

At the hearing, they even submitted restaurant reviews --

A 2017 poll by UCLA of LA County residents

not because they themselves could be removed,

I am not suggesting that no one should ever be deported;

don't confuse me with that.

But what I am saying is that we need to look at the bigger picture.

And in my career, in my life, I've been one of them:

in China, in Africa, in Europe.

And each time I become one of these foreigners --

one of these strange-looking guys in a new land --

I can't help but think back to that day

when I was in Lower Manhattan with my mom

all those decades ago,

when I was scared,

and I had just spotted that green lady.

And I guess the question that I keep on thinking about

when I see her
