When we think of games, there's all kinds of things.

and there's this whole range of games, and that's very much what I think about.

I make my living from games, I've been lucky enough to do this

since I was 15, which also qualifies as I've never really had a real job.

But we think about games as fun, and that's completely reasonable,

but let's just think about this.

So this one here, this is the 1980 Olympics.

Now I don't know where you guys were,

but I was in my living room.

It was practically a religious event.

And this is when the Americans beat the Russians,

and this was -- yes, it was technically a game.

Hockey is a game.

But really, was this a game?

And so this was an amazing experience.

after I believe, 351 years --

when they won the World Series, it was amazing.

I happened to be living in Springfield at the time,

So we'd be outside, and all the other lights are on in the whole block.

And kids -- the attendance was down in school,

I mean, there's education, and then there's the Red Sox,

So this was an amazing experience,

There was three years where I actually did have a real job, sort of.

I was the head of a college department teaching games,

so, again, it was sort of a real job,

and now I got to talk about making them as opposed to making them.

Part of the job of it, when you're a chair of a department,

and so I'm out at a dinner with this guy called Zig Jackson.

So this is Zig in this photograph, this is also one of Zig's photographs.

He's a photographer.

And he goes all around the country taking pictures of himself,

And this particular shot --

this is one of the more traditional shots.

And this is one of my favorite shots here.

So you can look at this, and maybe you've even seen things like this.

This is an expression of culture, right?

And this is actually from his Degradation series.

And what was most fascinating to me about this series

is just, look at that little boy there, can you imagine?

We can see that's a traditional Native American.

Now I just want to change that guy's race.

So, "Honey, come here, let's get you a picture with the black guy." Right?

Like, seriously, nobody would do this.

적잖이 당황스러울 거에요. 지그도 인디언으로서

It baffles the mind.

And so Zig, being Indian, likewise it baffles his mind.

His favorite photograph --

my favorite photograph of his, which I don't have in here --

is Indian taking picture of white people taking pictures of Indians.

(Laughter)

So I happen to be at dinner with this photographer,

and he was talking with another photographer

about a shooting that had occurred,

지난 번에 찍었던 촬영을 얘기하고 있었는데

and it was on an Indian Reservation.

He'd taken his camera up there to photograph it,

but when he got there, he discovered he couldn't do it.

He just couldn't capture the picture.

And so they were talking back and forth about this question.

사진을 찍어? 말어?

Do you take the picture or not?

And that was fascinating to me as a game designer,

because it never occurs to me,

저는 그런 고민을 해보지 않았으니까요.

should I make the game about this difficult topic or not?

이렇게 어려운 주제에 관해서 게임을 만들어? 말어?

Because we just make things that are fun

or will make you feel fear, that visceral excitement.

무섭거나 본능적으로 흥분하게 하는 것만 만드니까요.

But every other medium does it.

So this is my kid.

제 아이입니다. 이름은 매자인데

This is Maezza, and when she was seven years old,

이 아이가 7살 때 하루는 학교에서 돌아왔길래

she came home from school one day,

and like I do every single day, I asked her, "What did you do today?"

날마다 하듯이 물었어요.

"오늘 뭐 했어?"

딸이 답하길, "*중간 항로*를 얘기했어요." (* 노예 무역에 이용된 아프리카 서안- 서인도 제도간 항로)

So she said, "We talked about the Middle Passage."

자, 이건 중요한 순간이었죠. 매자의 아빠는 흑인이에요.

Now, this was a big moment. Maezza's dad is black,

and I knew this day was coming.

이런 날이 올 것을 알고 있었죠. 하지만 7살에 이런 일이 닥칠 거라곤 생각 못했어요.

I wasn't expecting it at seven, I don't know why, but I wasn't.

왜인지는 모르지만 예상을 못 했어요.

Anyways, so I asked her, "How do you feel about that?"

어쨋든 딸한테 물었죠. "거기에 대해서 어떤 생각이 들었어?"

그러자 딸이 나한테 얘기를 하려고 다가왔고,

So she proceeded to tell me,

and so any of you who are parents will recognize the bingo buzzwords here.

부모라면 직감적으로 어떻게 해야할지 아셨을 거에요.

"The ships start in England, they come down from England,

그러니까 영국에서 많은 배가 떠났어.

영국에서 출발해서 바다 건너 아프리카로 가.

they go to Africa, they go across the ocean --

그게 중간 항로에 관한 거야. 배들은 아메리카로 와서

that's the Middle Passage part --

they come to America, where the slaves are sold," she's telling me.

거기서 노예들을 팔아. 딸이 저한테 얘기하는 거에요.

하지만 아브라함 링컨이 대통령이 되었고,

But Abraham Lincoln was elected president,

노예 해방령을 통과시켰고 이제 노예들은 자유야.

and then he passed the Emancipation Proclamation,

10초쯤 얘기를 멈추죠.

and now they're free.

Pause for about 10 seconds.

"Can I play a game, Mommy?"

"엄마, 나 게임해도 돼?"

저는 생각했죠, 그게 다야? 여러분도 아시다시피,

And I thought, that's it? And so, you know,

this is the Middle Passage, this is an incredibly significant event,

중간 항로에 대한 얘기에요. 아주 중요한 사건인데

딸은 마치 몇몇 흑인들이

and she's treating it like, basically some black people went on a cruise,

뱃놀이라도 나간 것처럼 취급하는 거죠.

this is more or less how it sounds to her.

(Laughter)

저는 여기에 좀 더 가치를 두고 싶었어요.

And so, to me, I wanted more value in this,

so when she asked if she could play a game, I said, "Yes."

그래서 딸이 게임을 해도 좋냐고 물었을 때,

'그래."라고 했죠. (웃음)

(Laughter)

And so I happened to have all of these little pieces.

마침 저는 이런 조그만 토막들을 갖고 있었어요.

제가 게임 설계자라서 이런게 집에 널려 있어요.

I'm a game designer, so I have this stuff sitting around my house.

그래서 "응, 게임을 해도 좋아"라고 하고선

I said, "Yeah, you can play a game," and I give her a bunch of these,

and I tell her to paint them in different families.

These are pictures of Maezza when she was --

God, it still chokes me up seeing these.

그래서 제가 한 뭉치를 쥐고 배에 넣었어요.

So she's painting her little families.

So then I grab a bunch of them and I put them on a boat.

이건 배에요. 보시다시피 서둘러 만든 거에요. (웃음)

This was the boat, it was made quickly, obviously.

And so the basic gist of it is, I grabbed a bunch of families,

and she's like, "Mommy, but you forgot the pink baby

and you forgot the blue daddy

and you forgot all these other things."

딸이 얘기하죠. "그들이 가고 싶어해." 그러면 제가 얘기합니다.

And she says, "They want to go."

"딸아, 아니야, 그들은 가고 싶지 않아. 이건 중간 항로야.

And I said, "Honey, no, they don't want to go.

중간 항로는 아무도 가고 싶어 하지 않아."

This is the Middle Passage, Nobody wants to go on the Middle Passage."

그러자 딸은 게임 설계자의 딸만이

엄마한테 할 수 있는 표정을 짓더군요.

So she gave me a look that only a daughter of a game designer would give a mother,

우리가 바다를 건너면서는 이들 규칙을 따랐어요.

and as we're going across the ocean, following these rules,

배가 좌우로 많이 흔들린다는 걸 딸이 깨닫고는 이렇게 말하더군요.

she realizes that she's rolling pretty high,

"우리는 항로를 끝내지 못할 거에요."

and she says to me, "We're not going to make it."

게다가 우리가 가진 음식도 넉넉하지 못하다는 걸 딸이 깨달았어요.

And she realizes, we don't have enough food,

어떻게 해야 하냐고 딸이 묻더군요. 제가 말했죠.

and so she asks what to do,

and I say -- remember, she's seven --

"글쎄, 이렇게 할 수 있겠지." 기억하시죠. 딸은 7살이에요.

"We can either put some people in the water

"우리가 사람들 일부를 물 속에 넣거나

or we can hope that they don't get sick

사람들이 아프지 않기를 바래야지.

그럼 바다 저 편에 닿을 수 있어."

and we make it to the other side."

그러자 딸은 얼굴빛이 바뀌며

Just the look on her face came over --

now mind you this is after a month of --

말했어요. 그러니까 이번 달이

흑인의 역사를 다루는 달, 맞죠?

this is Black History Month, right?

After a month, she says to me, "Did this really happen?"

한달 뒤 딸이 내게 묻더군요,

"이런 일이 진짜 일어난거야?"

저는 "그래"라고 했죠. 그랬더니 딸은 "그럼 내가

And I said, "Yes." And so she said --

숲에서 나왔을 때" - 이건 남동생과 여동생 -

this is her brother and sister --

"If I came out of the woods, Avalon and Donovan might be gone."

"내가 숲에서 나왔을 때 아발론과 도노반은 없을 지도 모르겠네." "그래."

"Yes."

"하지만 아메리카에서 만날 수도 있지." "아니야."

"But I'd get to see them in America."

"No."

"하지만 그들을 만날 수 있으면 어떨까? 우리가 같이 있으면 안 돼?" "안 돼."

"But what if I saw them? Couldn't we stay together?"

"그럼 아빠도 없어질 수 있겠네." "응"

"So Daddy could be gone."

"Yes."

그러자 딸은 놀라서 울기 시작했죠.

She was fascinated by this, and she started to cry,

저도 울었고 남편도 울었어요.

I started to cry, her father started to cry, and now we're all crying.

우리 모두 울었죠. 남편은 일을 마치고

집에 돌아와 중간 항로를 만나리라고 생각하지는 못했어요.

He didn't expect to come home from work to the Middle Passage, but there it goes.

하지만 그랬어요. (웃음)

그래서 우리가 이 게임을 만들었고, 딸이 이해를 했습니다.

And so, we made this game, and she got it.

She got it because she spent time with these people.

딸이 이 사람들과 같이 시간을 보냈기 때문에 이해한거죠.

It wasn't abstract stuff in a brochure or in a movie.

팜플렛이나 영화에 나오는 낯선 얘기가 아니었거든요.

And so it was just an incredibly powerful experience.

그건 아주 놀랄 만큼 영향력이 있는 경험이었습니다.

This is the game, which I've ended up calling "The New World,"

이 게임은 제가 새로운 세상이라고 이름지었는데,

because I like the phrase.

I don't think the New World felt too new worldly exciting

to the people who were brought over on slave ships.

But when this happened, I saw the whole planet; I was so excited.

and then I decided to do it again.

My history is Irish.

저는 아일랜드 사람입니다.

So this is a game called "Síochán Leat." It's "peace be with you."

이건 시어헌 릿이라는 게임인데 "평화가 여러분과 함께 하기를"이란 뜻이죠.

제 가족의 온 역사가 한 게임에 담겨있어요.

It's the entire history of my family in a single game.

I made another game called "Train."

저는 기차라고 부르는 다른 게임을 만들었어요.

게임 6개를 연작으로 만들었는데

I was making a series of six games that covered difficult topics,

어려운 주제들을 담고 있어요. 여러분이 어려운 주제를 다루고 싶다면

and if you're going to cover a difficult topic, this is one you need to cover,

and I'll let you figure out what that's about on your own.

And I also made a game about the Trail of Tears.

This is a game with 50,000 individual pieces.

I was crazy when I decided to start it, but I'm in the middle of it now.

지금은 게임을 만들고 있어요.

It's the same thing.

같은 거에요.

I'm hoping that I'll teach culture through these games.

And the one I'm working on right now, which is --

because I'm right in the middle of it,

and these for some reason choke me up like crazy --

게임은 멕시코 식당에서 일하는 사람이라고 부릅니다.

is a game called "Mexican Kitchen Workers."

원래는 수학 문제 같았어요.

And originally, it was a math problem, more or less.

불법 이민자를 다룬 경제학 같은거죠.

Here's the economics of illegal immigration.

멕시코 문화를 배우면 배울수록

And the more I learned about Mexican culture --

제 동료는 멕시코 사람인데, 많이 알게 될수록

my partner is Mexican — the more I learned that,

여러분도 알다시피 우리는 모두 음식이 필요하죠. 그런데

you know, for all of us, food is a basic need,

멕시코 사람들도 마찬가지구요. 하지만 그 이상입니다.

and it is obviously with Mexicans, too, but it's much more than that.

음식은 사랑을 표현하고, 뭔가를 표현하는

It's an expression of love. It's an expression of --

어머, 제가 생각했던 것 이상으로 목이 메이네요.

God, I'm totally choking up way more than I thought.

I'll look away from the picture.

사진에서 고개를 돌릴게요.

It's an expression of beauty, it's how they say they love you.

음식은 아름다움을 표현하죠. 멕시코 사람들은 사랑한다는 말을 그렇게 표현합니다.

It's how they say they care,

그들이 서로를 아끼는 방법이고, 누군가가

and you can't hear somebody talk about their Mexican grandmother

멕시코 할머니를 얘기할 때

첫 마디에 음식을 말하지 않고는 얘기를 시작할 수 없죠.

without saying "food" in the first sentence.

And so to me, this beautiful culture,

그래서 제게는 이렇게 아름다운 문화, 이렇게 아름다운 표현을

this beautiful expression is something that I want to capture through games.

게임으로 담아보고 싶었어요.

And so games, for a change, it changes how we see topics,

그래서 게임은 변화하기 위해 있고, 우리가 주제를 보는 방법을 바꾸도록 합니다.

게임은 주제와 관련된 사람들에게 우리가 갖고 있는 인식을 바꿉니다.

it changes our perceptions about those people in topics,

우리 자신을 바꾸게하죠.

and it changes ourselves.

We change as people through games,

게임을 통해서 우리는 바뀝니다.

because we're involved, and we're playing,

우리가 게임에 참여해서 놀고 있기 때문이죠.

and we're learning as we do so.
