It's funny how foreigners ask me the same questions

when they first meet me.

And if I want to have fun with it,

ちょっと いたずら心が湧いて

I say things like,

言うことがあります

"Oh my God,

「何それ？ 聞いたことない！

I've never heard any of those before.

What are Coke and chocolates?

コーラとかチョコレートとか

Can you tell me more about them?"

何なのか教えてくれる？」

It always works,

これは いつもうまくいき

and we have a good laugh about it too.

一緒に大笑いすることになります

In reality, our capital city, Ulaanbaatar, is very urban.

実際には 首都のウランバートルは とても現代的な都市です

We have commercial buildings,

オフィスビルや

brand-name hotels

有名ホテルがあり

and beautiful art spaces too.

アートのための空間もあります

But all too often

それでも外国の人は

foreigners fixate on what Mongolia lacks.

モンゴルに対して 固定観念を持っています

They look at our massive, untouched landscape,

彼らはモンゴルの 広大で手つかずの大地や

traditional nomadic lifestyles,

伝統的な遊牧生活を見て

and see it as a sign of poverty.

それを貧しさと受け取ります

And I disagree.

私はそう思いません

In fact, I think there's a lot we can learn

実際 モンゴル古来の遊牧民の生活から 学べることは沢山あり

from ancient Mongolian nomads

that will help us survive

これからの時代を生きていく 助けになることでしょう

in the years and decades to come.

This is a picture of me playing Mongolia's most celebrated traditional instrument,

この写真は

モンゴルで大切にされている 伝統楽器モリンホール（馬頭琴）を

morin khuur,

or horsehead fiddle.

私が弾いているところです

I started playing the instrument when I was only nine,

私はこの楽器を ９歳から習い始め

and by 11 I was traveling the world

11歳の時には

国際フェスティバルのモンゴル代表として 世界を周り

representing Mongolia at international festivals,

living and studying in places like Japan, China, Finland, Germany and Sweden.

But then suddenly,

でも21歳のとき

when I was 21,

I lost my loving mother,

やさしかった母が亡くなり

and just two years later

その２年後には 父も亡くなりました

I lost my father.

As an only child,

一人っ子の私は 打ちひしがれ

I was devastated and lonely.

孤独になりました

At the time, the only thing I had left was my country,

その時の私に残されていたのは 故国しかなかったので

so I decided to move home.

帰国することにしました

When I was lost with sorrow,

悲しみに道を失っていた私に

my country gave me a feeling of safety and belonging.

故郷は安心感と所属感を 与えてくれました

I imagined eternal the blue sky of Mongolia as my father

モンゴルの果てしない 青い空を見ると父を

and the untouched, gorgeous landscape as my mother.

手つかずの美しい大地を見ると 母を思い出しました

Having lived in developed countries for over a decade,

10年以上先進国で 暮らしてきて

I became very distant from the nomadic lifestyles,

遊牧生活に 接することがなかったので

so I wanted to reconnect and experience it for myself.

自分でやってみたいと 思いました

I often journeyed away from the city toward my grandparents' provinces

都会を離れ

祖父母の故郷の モンゴルの田舎へと向かい

in rural Mongolia

to see where my parents and I came from,

両親や私の 根っこにあるものを見て

and better understand my own identity.

自分自身をもっと 理解しようとしました

Growing up, I'd always heard stories about how Mongolian nomads

子供の頃から モンゴルの遊牧民は もてなし好きだと聞かされていたので

were the most hospitable people on earth,

and I wanted to see with my own eyes

彼らが本当に赤の他人に 食べ物や宿を与えてくれるものか

whether they really feed and give shelter to a stranger.

自分の目で確かめたいと 思いました

So I set off to the countryside,

舗装されていない田舎道を

driving along dirt roads for hours.

車で何時間も 進み続けました

What's incredible about Mongolian nomads

モンゴルの遊牧民について 驚くのは

is that the neighbors are often 40 kilometers apart,

お隣さんまで40キロも 離れていることがあり

and there's no private land ownership of pasture land in Mongolia.

放牧地は誰のものでもない ということです

In a way,

ある意味 モンゴルの遊牧民には 完全な自由があり

Mongolian nomads have the complete freedom,

moving about the gorgeous landscape as they wish.

美しい大地を好きなように 移動しているのです

Eventually, I spotted to humble yurts

やがて私は つつましいユルトを見つけ

and I pulled over.

車を止めました

Yurts, or ger,

ユルトはゲルとも呼ばれ

are a traditional Mongolian dwelling.

モンゴルの伝統的な住居です

They're made from one hundred percent natural material,

すべて天然の素材でできています

a wooden frame and floor,

木の枠組みや床

leather rope

革の紐

and thick blankets made from felted sheep's wool.

羊毛でできた厚い覆い

And it takes about only three to four hours

組み立てや分解には ３～４時間しかかからず

to assemble or disassemble,

and keeps them warm

気温が零下50度でも 中を暖かく保てます

through the minus 50 degree Celsius winters.

Outside the yurt,

そのユルトの外では

the kids were playing with sheep and goats,

子供たちが 羊やヤギと遊んでいて

and as I greeted them,

私が挨拶をすると

their parents welcomed me inside.

両親が迎え入れてくれました

The wife poured me nice warm milk tea,

奥さんが あったかくておいしい ミルクティーを注いでくれ

and the husband offered me food

旦那さんが 既に食卓に用意されていた 食事を勧めてくれました

that they had already prepared on the table.

After some casual chitchat,

しばらく おしゃべりした後で

the husband politely asked my purpose,

旦那さんに訪問の理由を 聞かれたので

so I replied bluntly

祖父母の起源を辿る 旅をしていること

that I was just traveling

and exploring my grandparents' roots

日が暮れて泊まる場所が 必要なことを

and that I needed a place to stay

as the sun was setting.

素直に伝えました

And guess what?

どうなったと思いますか？

He said I could stay as long as I needed to,

好きなだけいてよいが ひとつ条件があると

on one condition.

旦那さんが言いました

He asked if I would play the morin khuur,

モンゴルの伝統楽器の 馬頭琴を弾いてほしいと

our traditional Mongolian horsehead fiddle.

In my head, I couldn't believe it was coming true.

本当にそんなことになるなんて 信じられませんでした

And the horsehead fiddle was like a ticket.

馬頭琴は私の 切符のようになりました

When Mongolians find out that you can play morin khuur,

馬頭琴が弾けると分かると

you're instantly respected.

モンゴルの人はみんな 敬意を払ってくれるんです

They say its two strings

馬頭琴の２本の弦は

express all the events of the world.

世界のあらゆる物事を表現すると 言われています

I ended up staying with them for nine days,

私は彼らの元に９日間いましたが

and they didn't even ask me to leave.

出発を促されることもなく

I think if I tried to stay there for two months,

私が２か月居座るつもりでも

they would have let me.

そうさせてくれたことでしょう

And here's the thing:

モンゴルの遊牧民の もてなしが良いのは

before I met them,

I assumed that Mongolian nomads were hospitable out of kindness

ただ親切だからだと 思っていたんですが

like anybody else.

But then I realized it was more than that.

それ以上のものがあることに 気付きました

It was about surviving as a community.

共同体としての 生きる知恵なのです

Because nomads live in extremely remote areas,

遊牧民はすごく 閑散とした場所に暮らし

they are completely at the mercy of nature.

自然に翻弄されます

Heavy snowfall,

大雪や

a sudden flood

突然の洪水や

or a raging storm

荒れ狂う嵐に

can devastate a nomadic family.

打ちのめされるかもしれません

Today, it's a stranger who needs help,

今日助けを必要としているのが 他人でも

but tomorrow, it could be you.

明日は我が身 かもしれないのです

That's why they look out for each other

だからこそ互いに気を配り

and welcome anyone in need of help.

助けが必要な人に 温かいのです

This really touched my heart,

このことがすごく 心に響きました

because I feel like we humans are becoming more and more selfish.

世界では みんなどんどん 利己的になっていくように感じるからです

Staying with a truly nomadic family awakened me.

本当の遊牧民の家族と暮らしたことで 目が開かれました

It was nothing like I've ever seen in developed countries.

先進国で見てきたものとは まるで違いました

The wife of the family

奥さんは オーガニックな乳製品を 一から手作りする方法を教えてくれました

showed me how they produce organic dairy products from scratch,

like white cheese, yogurt, tsegee,

白チーズや ヨーグルト 馬乳酒

and even a traditional vodka made from cow milk.

牛乳から作った 伝統的なウォッカまで

And every tool they use is made from natural material by hand.

使う道具はすべて 天然の素材から 手作りされたものでした

And inside the yurt,

ユルトの中では

we burned dried cow dung to stay warm

燃料ではなく 干した牛の糞を燃やします

instead of using fuel.

Everything stood in sharp contrast

プラスチックや金属に溢れた 都会の暮らしとは

to my city life filled with plastic and steel.

鮮やかな対照をなしていました

And this was a five-senses experience to me,

それは全感覚的な体験であり

a completely different form of sophistication.

まったく違った形の高度さを 示していました

The more I traveled across remote and rural destinations in Mongolia,

モンゴルの田舎を旅するほど

the more I understood

モンゴル古来の遊牧生活が 母なる自然に力を得ていることを

how ancient nomadic lifestyle was powered by Mother Nature.

理解するようになりました

Nomadic life is truly zero waste.

遊牧生活に無駄は一切ありません

Over the course of six years,

６年にわたって 20以上の家族を訪れましたが

I visited more than 20 families,

and my experience was always the same.

私の経験はいつも同じでした

They invited me in, offered me food

招き入れて食事を勧めてくれ

and gave me a place to stay if I needed it.

必要なら泊めてくれました

I was surprised by how little they owned.

彼らの持ち物の少なさには 驚きました

At first, I thought it was because they moved about four times a year.

年に４回移住するためだろうと はじめは思っていました

OK, that's a very simple logic to understand.

分かりやすい話です

You only carry what you need.

必要最小限の物だけ 持ち運ぶのだと

But then I learned

でも そこにはもっと深い 思想があることを学びました

there's a deeper philosophy behind it.

Historically, nomads believed

伝統的に 遊牧民の間では

that we are only passing through this life,

人間はこの世界に裸でやってきて 裸で去っていくものと

that people come and leave naked,

考えられています

so they believe that there's no point in building anything that destroys nature

だから自然を壊して何か作ったり

or in being greedy for materialistic things

物質的なことに貪欲になるのは

when your life expectancy is only less than 100 years.

百年足らずしか生きないわけだし あまり意味がなく

Instead, they invest in tradition,

その代わりに

伝統や文化や歴史を重んじて

heritage, history,

and pass it from generation to generation.

代々伝えていくのです

This ancient nomadic philosophy made me realize that I should think bigger

私も自分の利便や快適さよりも もっと大きな考え方をしなければと

and further than my own convenience and comfort.

遊牧民古来の思想に 気付かされました

In the Mongolian countryside, I felt a true form of freedom,

モンゴルの田舎にいると 本当の自由を感じ

and every time I came back to the city,

都会に戻ってくるたび

I looked for ways to live more minimally.

もっと最小限の生き方が できないかと考えます

I digitalized all of my company's paper procedures.

紙でやっていた会社の手続きを すべて電子化し

What once took 20 packs of A4 paper

以前はプリンター用紙を 20パック使っていたのが

now takes just one.

１パックで済むようになりました

I downsized my apartment, reduced my carbon footprint

小さなアパートに移って 自分の二酸化炭素排出量を減らすようにし

and picked up a habit to rethink my actions,

買う物や 移動手段や

like purchasing, choosing transportation,

その他の会社や家での選択を

and many other lifestyle choices at home and work.

注意してするようになりました

And most importantly,

変化の速い消費財の マーケティングの仕事もやめて

I stopped working on fast-moving consumer-goods marketing projects

and now work with organizations that promote sustainability.

社会の持続可能化を推進する組織で 働きはじめました

But by far the biggest change

でも 一番大きな変化は

is that I've started to see development

発展というものを 違った目で見るようになったことです

with fresh eyes.

In cities,

都会では

living in a traditional yurt as a nomad

遊牧民として わずかな持ち物で ユルトに暮らすのは

and having less

is often interpreted as a sign of poverty,

貧しいと見られがちで

not just abroad

外国だけでなく

but at home in Mongolia too.

モンゴルにおいてさえ そうです

We think that the end goal for every developing country

発展途上国が 目指すべきものは

is to become the next Tokyo or New York City,

高層ビルや巨大なショッピングモールや 有料道路のある

with their skyscrapers, big shopping malls and toll roads.

東京やニューヨークのような場所だと 考えられています

Communities around the world are abandoning their traditional lifestyles

世界中で 物質的豊かさが求められ

in pursuit of material wealth.

伝統的なライフスタイルが 失われています

But let's not forget,

でも気候変動の大きな責任は 先進国にあることを

the developed countries

are the ones most responsible for climate change.

忘れないようにしましょう

So we have to ask ourselves,

世界に害を及ぼすと 分かっているやり方に

why do we keep on following the same blueprint

どうして従い続けるのか 自問すべきでしょう

when we know it causes harm to the world?

We've all experienced the consequences of our choices

自分の選択によって 結果が変わることは

over the past eight months.

この８か月の間に みんな経験しています

So doing right by Mother Nature

母なる自然に良い

and focusing on earth-friendly, zero-waste habits

地球にやさしく 物を無駄にしないやり方しか

is not an option anymore.

もはや選べないのです

And who knows the key ingredients better than our ancestors,

そしてそのやり方を 私たちの祖先以上に 知る人はいないでしょう

the ones who survived without the media

彼らはメディアも テクノロジーもなしに

or technology

知恵だけで 生き抜いたのですから

but with wisdom alone?

As a citizen of Mongolia,

モンゴル人として

発展途上国は劣っていると 聞かされてきて

I grew up hearing

that developing countries are inferior,

自分でも そう思っていました

and I really took it to heart.

But today, I want to say loud and clear

でも今は

発展途上国が劣っていることなんてないと はっきり言うことができます

that I don't see disadvantages from developing countries anymore.

On the contrary,

むしろ逆に

I see countries that have the biggest opportunity

物事を正しく行えるチャンスがあり

to do things in the right way,

countries that can define their own kind of development

自分らしい発展のありかたを決め

and have the most advantage to build a better and safer environment

みんなにとってより良く 安全な環境を作れる

利点があると思っています

for everyone.

What worked for our ancestors for thousands of years

先祖の人たちに 何千年も有効だったやり方は

can work for us now,

新たな発明と組み合わせれば

and in the future,

when combined with the latest innovations.

現在や将来の私たちにも 有効なはずです

After all, we're all guests in this world,

私たちはこの世界の 客人に過ぎないのです

so let's do right by the earth and each other

地球や互いにとって 正しいことをしましょう

just like the ancient Mongolian nomads did.
