I would like to talk today

about what I think is one of the greatest adventures

human beings have embarked upon,

My own interest in this subject, and my passion for it,

began rather accidentally.

I had bought a copy of this book,

"The Universe and Dr. Einstein" --

a used paperback from a secondhand bookstore in Seattle.

वह पतली जिल्द वाली सिएटल की एक पुरानी पुस्तको की की दुकान से थी।

A few years after that, in Bangalore,

I was finding it hard to fall asleep one night,

and I picked up this book,

thinking it would put me to sleep in 10 minutes.

And as it happened,

I read it from midnight to five in the morning in one shot.

And I was left with this intense feeling

of awe and exhilaration

at the universe

and our own ability to understand as much as we do.

और हमारी अपनी समझने की क्षमता जो आज है।

And that feeling hasn't left me yet.

और उस भावना से मैं अभी तक मुक्त नही हो पाया हूँ।

That feeling was the trigger for me

to actually change my career --

from being a software engineer to become a science writer --

so that I could partake in the joy of science,

and also the joy of communicating it to others.

And that feeling also led me

to a pilgrimage of sorts,

to go literally to the ends of the earth

to see telescopes, detectors,

instruments that people are building, or have built,

in order to probe the cosmos

in greater and greater detail.

So it took me from places like Chile --

यह खोज मुझे चीली जैसी जगह ले गई --

the Atacama Desert in Chile --

चीली देश की आटाकामा मरुभूमि से --

to Siberia,

साइवेरिया तक,

to underground mines

in the Japanese Alps, in Northern America,

जापान की एल्प पर्वतमाला से उत्तरी अमेरिका तक,

all the way to Antarctica

and even to the South Pole.

And today I would like to share with you

some images, some stories of these trips.

I have been basically spending the last few years

documenting the efforts

of some extremely intrepid men and women

who are putting,

literally at times, their lives at stake

working in some very remote and very hostile places

so that they may gather the faintest signals from the cosmos

in order for us to understand this universe.

And I first begin with a pie chart --

and I promise this is the only pie chart

in the whole presentation --

but it sets up the state of our knowledge of the cosmos.

All the theories in physics that we have today

भौतिकी के सम्पूर्ण सिद्धान्त जो हमारे पास हैं

properly explain what is called normal matter --

ठीक ढंग से व्याख्या करते है कि "सामान्य पदार्थ" किसे कहते है --

the stuff that we're all made of --

जिस चीज से हम बने हैं --

and that's four percent of the universe.

और उसकी मात्रा ब्रह्माण्ड मे सिर्फ ४ प्रतिशत हैं।

Astronomers and cosmologists and physicists think

खगोलज्ञ, ब्रह्माण्डज्ञ तथा भौतिकीज्ञ सोचते है कि

that there is something called dark matter in the universe,

इस ब्रह्माण्ड में कुछ ऐसा है जिसे वे श्याम (डार्क) पदार्थ कहते हैं,

which makes up 23 percent of the universe,

उसकी मात्रा ब्रह्माण्ड में २३ प्रतिशत है,

and something called dark energy,

और ऐसा कुछ जिसे श्याम ऊर्जा कहते हैं,

which permeates the fabric of space-time,

और जो समय-स्थान की संरचना मे व्याप्त हैं,

that makes up another 73 percent.

वह शेष ७३% मात्रा में है ।

So if you look at this pie chart, 96 percent of the universe,

at this point in our exploration of it,

is unknown or not well understood.

And most of the experiments, telescopes that I went to see

are in some way addressing this question,

these two twin mysteries of dark matter and dark energy.

इन दो रहस्यों को, श्याम पदार्थ तथा श्याम उर्जा को।

I will take you first to an underground mine

अब मै आपको एक भूमिगत खदान की ओर ले चलता हूँ

in Northern Minnesota

उत्तरी मिनेसोटा में

where people are looking

जहां लोग खोज रहे है

for something called dark matter.

उसे जिसे श्याम पदार्थ कहा गया ।

And the idea here is that they are looking for a sign

और उद्देश्य है उस संकेत को पकड़ना

of a dark matter particle hitting one of their detectors.

जब श्याम पदार्थ का एक कण उनके संसूचक से टकराएगा ।

And the reason why they have to go underground

और भूमिगत होने का कारण यह है

is that, if you did this experiment on the surface of the Earth,

the same experiment would be swamped by signals

that could be created by things like cosmic rays,

So they go deep inside mines

to find a kind of environmental silence

that will allow them to hear

the ping of a dark matter particle hitting their detector.

And I went to see one of these experiments,

and this is actually -- you can barely see it,

and the reason for that is it's entirely dark in there --

this is a cavern that was left behind by the miners

who left this mine in 1960.

And physicists came and started using it

And the miners in the early part of the last century

worked, literally, in candlelight.

And today, you would see this inside the mine,

half a mile underground.

This is one of the largest underground labs in the world.

And, among other things, they're looking for dark matter.

There is another way to search for dark matter,

which is indirectly.

If dark matter exists in our universe,

in our galaxy,

then these particles should be smashing together

and producing other particles that we know about --

one of them being neutrinos.

And neutrinos you can detect

by the signature they leave

when they hit water molecules.

When a neutrino hits a water molecule

it emits a kind of blue light,

a flash of blue light,

and by looking for this blue light,

you can essentially understand something about the neutrino

and then, indirectly, something about the dark matter

that might have created this neutrino.

But you need very, very large volumes of water

And where in the world would you find such water?

Well the Russians have a tank in their own backyard.

This is Lake Baikal.

It is the largest lake in the world. It's 800 km long.

यह विश्व की सब से बडी झील है । यह ८०० किलोमीटर लम्बी है ।

It's about 40 to 50 km wide

यह ४० से ५० कि.मि. चौडी है

in most places,

and one to two kilometers deep.

And what the Russians are doing

is they're building these detectors

and immersing them about a kilometer beneath the surface of the lake

so that they can watch for these flashes of blue light.

And this is the scene that greeted me when I landed there.

This is Lake Baikal

in the peak of the Siberian winter.

The lake is entirely frozen.

And the line of black dots

और वह काली बिन्दुओं की पंक्ति

that you see in the background,

that's the ice camp where the physicists are working.

वह बर्फ-तम्बू है जहाँ भौतिकीज्ञ काम कर रहे हैं ।

The reason why they have to work in winter

उन्हें जाड़े में इसलिए काम करना होता है

is because they don't have the money to work in summer and spring,

which, if they did that,

they would need ships and submersibles to do their work.

So this is the Russians working on the ice

They have to drill holes in the ice,

dive down into the water -- cold, cold water --

to get hold of the instrument, bring it up,

do any repairs and maintenance that they need to do,

put it back and get out before the ice melts.

Because that phase of solid ice lasts for two months

and it's full of cracks.

And you have to imagine, there's an entire sea-like lake

underneath, moving.

I still don't understand this one Russian man

working in his bare chest,

And these people, a handful of people,

looking for particles that may or may not exist.

And they have dedicated their lives to it.

And just to give you an idea,

And it's that basic,

From Siberia to the Atacama Desert in Chile,

to see something called The Very Large Telescope.

The Very Large Telescope

is one of these things that astronomers do --

they name their telescopes rather unimaginatively.

I can tell you for a fact,

that the next one that they're planning is called The Extremely Large Telescope.

Each mirror, there are four of them,

is made of a single piece of glass,

An extraordinary set of telescopes.

The reason why you have to build these telescopes

in places like the Atacama Desert

is because of the high altitude desert.

The dry air is really good for telescopes,

and also, the cloud cover is below the summit of these mountains

so that the telescopes have

about 300 days of clear skies.

Finally, I want to take you to Antarctica.

I want to spend most of my time on this part of the world.

This is cosmology's final frontier.

Some of the most amazing experiments,

some of the most extreme experiments,

are being done in Antarctica.

I was there to view something called a long-duration balloon flight,

which basically takes telescopes and instruments

all the way to the upper atmosphere,

And that's where they do their experiments,

I was here to see the launch

मैं यहां उड़ान देखने के लिए आया था

of this particular type of instrument.

इस विशेष प्रकार के उपकरण की

This is a cosmic ray experiment

यह एक अन्तरिक्ष किरण सम्बन्धी प्रयोग है

that has been launched all the way to the upper-stratosphere

जिसे उच्चतर समतापमण्डल मे प्रक्षेपित किया गया है

to an altitude of 40 km.

४० किलोमिटर की ऊँचाई पर ।

What I want you to imagine is this is two tons in weight.

मैं आपको कल्पना कराना चाहता हूँ की इसका भार 2 टन है।

So you're using a balloon

और आप एक गुब्बारे का प्रयोग कर रहे हैं

to carry something that is two tons

दो सौ टन भार वहन के लिए

all the way to an altitude of 40 km.

वह भी 40 किलोमीटर की ऊँचाई तक।

And the engineers, the technicians, the physicists

इंजीनीयर, तकनीशियन, भौतिकीज्ञगण

have all got to assemble on the Ross Ice Shelf,

सभी को रॉस हिम परत पर एकत्र होना पड़ता है

because Antarctica -- I won't go into the reasons why --

क्योंकि यह अंटार्कटिका है -- मै कारणो मे नही जाऊँगा --

but it's one of the most favorable places for doing these balloon launches,

लेकिन यह गुब्बारों की उड़ान के लिए सर्वाधिक अनुकुल स्थान है,

except for the weather.

सर्दी के मौसम के अतिरिक्त।

The weather, as you can imagine,

मौसम, जैसा की आप कल्पना कर सकते हैं,

this is summer, and you're standing on 200 ft of ice.

यह ग्रीष्म ऋतु है, और आप 200 फीट बर्फ पर खडे हैं।

And there's a volcano behind,

और पीछे एक ज्वालामुखी है,

which has glaciers at the very top.

उसके शिखर पर हिमनदीयां हैं।

And what they have to do

उनको क्या करना है कि

is they have to assemble the entire balloon --

उस गुब्बारे के सभी पुर्जो को आपस मे जोड़ना है --

the fabric, parachute and everything -- on the ice

कपडा, अवतरण छतरी तथा अन्य सभी सामाग्री -- बर्फ पर

and then fill it up with helium.

और फिर उसमें हिलीयम भरना।

And that process takes about two hours.

इस प्रक्रिया में करीब 2 घण्टे लगते हैं।

And the weather can change as they're putting together this whole assembly.

और जब वे पुर्जो को जोड़ रहे होते है तब मौसम बदल सकता हैं

For instance, here they are laying down the balloon fabric behind,

उदाहरणस्वरूप, यहां वह पीछे की और गुब्बारे के कपडे को बिछा रहे हैं,

which is eventually going to be filled up with helium.

जिसमे अन्ततः हीलियम भरा जाएगा ।

Those two trucks you see at the very end

वो जो दो ट्रक आप सबसे अंत मे देख रहे हैं

carry 12 tanks each of compressed helium.

वह प्रत्येक 12 टंकी संकुचित हिलीयम का भार लिए हुए है।

Now, in case the weather changes before the launch,

अब, यदि उडान से पूर्व मौसम परिवर्तन हो जाए तो,

they have to actually pack everything back up into their boxes

उन्हें सब कुछ वापस बक्सो मे डालना होगा

and take it out back to McMurdo Station.

और वापस मैक्मुर्डो स्टेशन ले जाना होगा।

And this particular balloon,

और यह खास गुब्बारा,

because it has to launch two tons of weight,

क्योंकि इसे 2 टन भार वहन के साथ उडान भरनी है,

is an extremely huge balloon.

एक अत्यंत विशाल गुब्बारा है ।

The fabric alone weighs two tons.

इसके कपडे मात्र का वजन 2 टन है।

In order to minimize the weight,

भार घटाने के लिए,

it's very thin, it's as thin as a sandwich wrapper.

यह बेहद पतला है, भोजन लपेटने वाले कागज जितना पतला।

And if they have to pack it back,

और यदि उन्हें इसे वापस गठरी बनानी पडे,

they have to put it into boxes

उन्हे वापस बक्सो मे डालना होगा

and stamp on it so that it fits into the box again --

और पतर चढानी होगी ताकि वह बक्सो मे ठीक से बैठ जाए --

except, when they did it first,

अपवाद यह है कि, जब यह प्रथम बार किया गया,

it would have been done in Texas.

यह टेक्सास राज्य मे किया जाना था।

Here, they can't do it with the kind shoes they're wearing,

यहां, उन जूत्तो को पहन कर नहीं किया जा सकता जो वे पहने हैं,

so they have to take their shoes off,

अतः उन्हे जूत्ते निकालने पड़ते हैं,

get barefoot into the boxes, in this cold,

इतनी ठंड में नंगे पैर बक्सो मे उतरना होता है

and do that kind of work.

और इस प्रकार का काम करना पड़ता है।

That's the kind of dedication these people have.

ऐसी निष्ठा है इन व्यक्तियों में ।

Here's the balloon being filled up with helium,

यहां गुब्बारे मे हीलियम भरा जा रहा है,

and you can see it's a gorgeous sight.

that shows you the balloon and the payload end-to-end.

So the balloon is being filled up with helium on the left-hand side,

तो दायीं तरफ गुब्बारे मे हिलियम भरी जा रही है,

and the fabric actually runs all the way to the middle

और वह कपडा बिल्कुल मध्य तक फैला है

where there's a piece of electronics and explosives

जहां इलेक्ट्रोनिक सामाग्री तथा विस्फोटक रखे हैं

being connected to a parachute,

अवतरण छतरी से जोडी जा रही है,

and then the parachute is then connected to the payload.

और वह अवतरण छतरी भार के साथ जोडी जा रही है ।

And remember, all this wiring is being done

और स्मरण रहे, सम्पूर्ण तारो को जोडा जा रहा है

by people in extreme cold, in sub-zero temperatures.

लोगो द्वारा चरम ठंड मे, शून्य से नीचे के तापक्रम में।

They're wearing about 15 kg of clothing and stuff,

वे खुद 15 किलो के वस्त्र पहने हैं,

but they have to take their gloves off in order to do that.

और यह सब करने के लिए उन्हे अपने पंजे उतारने पड़ते हैं।

This is a close-up of the Buddhist monastery.

And I was struck by the juxtaposition

मै विस्मित हो गया यह निकटता देख कर

of these two enormous disciplines that humanity has.

मानव जाति की दो विपुल विधाओ के बीच

One is exploring the cosmos on the outside,

एक बाह्य अंतरिक्ष मे खोज रही है,

and the other one is exploring our interior being.

और दूसरी हमारे भीतर के अस्तित्व को

And both require silence of some sort.

और दोनो को एक प्रकार का मौन चाहिए

And what struck me was

और मुझे इसने विस्मित किया कि

every place that I went to to see these telescopes,

प्रत्येक स्थान में जहाँ मै दुरबीन देखने गया,

the astronomers and cosmologists

खगोलज्ञ तथा ब्रह्माणडज्ञ

are in search of a certain kind of silence,

विशेष प्रकार का मौन खोज रहे है,

whether it's silence from radio pollution

चाहे वह विकिरण प्रदूषण से मौन हीं क्यो न हो

or light pollution or whatever.

अथवा प्रकाश प्रदूषण से या जिस किसी से।

And it was very obvious

यह सुस्पष्ट था

that, if we destroy these silent places on Earth,

यदि पृथ्वी पर इन मौनता वाले स्थानो को हम नष्ट कर देंगे तो,

we will be stuck on a planet without the ability to look outwards,

हमे ऐसे ग्रह पर रहना होगा जहां हमारे पास बाह्य पक्ष को देखने की क्षमता न होगी,

because we will not be able to understand the signals that come from outer space.

क्योंकि हम बाह्य अन्तरिक्ष से आने वाले संकेतो को नहीं समझ पाएँगे।
