I'm a painter.

मैं एक पेंटर हूँ।

I make large-scale figurative paintings,

which means I paint people

like this.

But I'm here tonight to tell you about something personal

that changed my work and my perspective.

It's something we all go through,

ये ऐसा कुछ है जो हम सब झेलते है

and my hope is that my experience may be helpful to somebody.

To give you some background on me, I grew up the youngest of eight.

Yes, eight kids in my family.

I have six older brothers and a sister.

To give you a sense of what that's like,

when my family went on vacation,

we had a bus.

तो बस लेनी पड़ती थी।

(Laughter)

My supermom would drive us all over town

मेरी सुपर मम्मी हमें शहर भर में हमारी ड्राइवरी करती थीं।

to our various after-school activities --

स्कूल के बाद के तमाम कोर्स वग़ैरह के लिए

not in the bus.

, बस में नहीं।

We had a regular car, too.

हमारी एक नोर्मल कार भी थी।

She would take me to art classes,

वो मुझे आर्ट क्लास ले जाती थी,

and not just one or two.

और सिर्फ़ एक और दो क्लास नहीं।

जितनी भी आर्ट क्लासें थीं , सब जगह, मेरे 8 से 16 साल तक की उम्र में,

She took me to every available art class from when I was eight to 16,

because that's all I wanted to do.

क्योंकि मैं बस आर्ट ही करती थी।

She even took a class with me in New York City.

माँ ने न्यू यॉर्क की एक क्लास मेरे साथ ज्वाइन कर ली थी।

और आठ में सबसे छोटा होने का मतलब मुझे कुछ हथकंडे सीखने पड़े।

Now, being the youngest of eight, I learned a few survival skills.

Rule number one:

पहला रूल:

don't let your big brother see you do anything stupid.

कभी बड़े भाई को अपनी बेवक़ूफ़ी पकड़ने मत दो।

So I learned to be quiet and neat

तो मैंने चुप और साफ़ रहना सीख लिया

और नियम के हिसाब से चलना और गड़बड़ नहीं करना।

and careful to follow the rules and stay in line.

But painting was where I made the rules.

मगर जब पेंटिंग की बात आती, तो अपने रूल मैं ख़ुद बनाती थी।

That was my private world.

वो मेरी अपनी निजी दुनिया थी।

By 14, I knew I really wanted to be an artist.

14 की उम्र तक मुझे पता लग गया था कि मुझे आर्टिस्ट बनना है।

My big plan was to be a waitress to support my painting.

मैं सोचती थी की वेटर बन कर कमा लूँगी और पेंटिंग करूँगी

So I continued honing my skills.

तो मैं अपनी पेनिंग पर काम करती रही।

I went to graduate school and I got an MFA,

मैंने एम एफ ए की डिग्री ले ली,

and at my first solo show, my brother asked me,

"What do all these red dots mean next to the paintings?"

Nobody was more surprised than me.

The red dots meant that the paintings were sold

and that I'd be able to pay my rent

with painting.

मेरे फ़्लैट में बिजली के चार प्लग थे,

Now, my apartment had four electrical outlets,

and I couldn't use a microwave and a toaster at the same time,

और मैं अपना माइक्रोवेव और टोस्टर एक साथ नहीं लगा सकती थी,

but still, I could pay my rent.

मगर फिर भी, मैं किराया देने जितना कमा रही थी।

So I was very happy.

तो मैं काफ़ी ख़ुश थी।

Here's a painting from back around that time.

I needed it to be as realistic as possible.

मैं इसे बिलकुल असली बनाना चाहती थी।

It had to be specific and believable.

This was the place where I was isolated and in total control.

Since then, I've made a career of painting people in water.

Bathtubs and showers were the perfect enclosed environment.

बाथटब और फ़व्वारे बिलकुल परिभाषित माहौल देते हैं।

It was intimate and private,

and water was this complicated challenge that kept me busy for a decade.

I made about 200 of these paintings,

मैंने क़रीब दो सौ ऐसी पेंटिंग बनाईं,

some of them six to eight feet,

like this one.

For this painting, I mixed flour in with the bathwater to make it cloudy

इस पेंटिंग के लिए मैंने पानी में आटा घोल कर उसे धुँधला बनाया

and I floated cooking oil on the surface

और फिर इस के सतह पर तेल मल कर

and stuck a girl in it,

उस में इस लड़की को लगा दिया,

और जब मैंने उस पर रोशनी डाली,

and when I lit it up,

it was so beautiful I couldn't wait to paint it.

तो वो इतना ख़ूबसूरत था की उसे पेंट किए बिना रहा नहीं गया।

मैं इस तरह की बेचैन सी जिज्ञासा से भारी थी,

I was driven by this kind of impulsive curiosity,

always looking for something new to add:

हमेशा कुछ नया जोड़ने की कोशिश करती हुई:

vinyl, steam, glass.

विनाइल, भाप, शीशा।

एक बार मैंने अपने पूरे सर और बालों में वैसलीन लगा ली

I once put all this Vaseline in my head and hair

just to see what that would look like.

बस जानने के लिए की कैसा दिखेगा।

Don't do that.

आप मत करिएगा।

(Laughter)

तो सब सही चल रहा था।

So it was going well.

I was finding my way.

मैं अपने रास्ते खोज रही थे।

I was eager and motivated

मैं उत्सुक थी, उत्साहित थी।

and surrounded by artists,

और आर्टिस्ट लोगों से घिरी हुई थी,

always going to openings and events.

हमेशा नए इवेंट और ओपनिंग में मौजूद।

I was having some success and recognition

थोड़ी सफलता और शोहरत भी मिलने लगी थी।

and I moved into an apartment with more than four outlets.

और मेरे नए घर में चार से ज़्यादा बिजली के प्लग भी थे।

My mom and I would stay up very late

मेरी माँ और में देर रात तक जाग कर

अपने नए प्रयोगों पर एक दूसरे को बढ़ावा देते रहते थे।

talking about our latest ideas and inspiring each other.

She made beautiful pottery.

वो मिट्टी के बर्तन बनाती थीं ।

I have a friend named Bo who made this painting

मेरे दोस्त बो ने ये पेंटिंग बनायी थी

of his wife and I dancing by the ocean,

अपनी पत्नी और मेरे समंदर किनारे नाचते हुए,

and he called it "The Light Years."

और वो इसे कहता था "द लाइट इयर्स"।

I asked him what that meant, and he said,

मैंने पूछा की इस का क्या अर्थ हुआ, और उस ने कहा,

"Well, that's when you've stepped into adulthood, you're no longer a child,

"देखो, जब हम बड़े होते हैं, तो बचपन पीछे छूट जाता है,

but you're not yet weighed down by the responsibilities of life."

मगर तुम ने अपनी ज़िम्मेदारियों के बीच भी उसे जीवित रखा है।"

बस, यही मतलब था द लाइट इयर्स का।

That was it. It was the light years.

On October 8, 2011,

8 अक्टूबर 2011 को,

the light years came to an end.

द लाइट इयर्स का अंत हो गया।

My mom was diagnosed with lung cancer.

मेरे माँ को फेफड़े का कैंसर निकला।

वो उनकी हड्डियों और दिमाग़ तक फैल चुका था।

It had spread to her bones, and it was in her brain.

When she told me this, I fell to my knees.

जब उन्होंने मुझे बताया, तो मैं गिर गयी।

I totally lost it.

मेरी दुनिया ख़त्म हो गयी।

And when I got myself together and I looked at her,

और जब मैं संभली और उन्हें देखा,

तो लगा की मेरा दुःख बहुत छोटा था।

I realized, this isn't about me.

This is about figuring out how to help her.

यहाँ मुद्दा माँ के मदद करने का था।

मेरे पिता डॉक्टर हैं,

My father is a doctor,

and so we had a great advantage having him in charge,

और उनकी वजह से हमें बहुत सहारा मिला,

और उन्होंने बड़े बहतरीन तरीक़े से माँ का ख़याल रखा।

and he did a beautiful job taking care of her.

But I, too, wanted to do everything I could to help,

पर मैं भी जो बन पड़े, करना चाहती थी,

so I wanted to try everything.

तो मैंने सब कुछ करने लगी।

हम सब करने लगे।

We all did.

I researched alternative medicines,

वैकल्पिक दवाई रिसर्च करी,

diets, juicing, acupuncture.

खानपान, ऐक्यूपंक्चर।

Finally, I asked her,

आख़िर मैंने उन से पूछा,

"तुम चाहती हो कि मैं ये करूँ?"

"Is this what you want me to do?"

And she said, "No."

और उन्होंने कहा, "न।"

She said, "Pace yourself. I'm going to need you later."

उन्होंने कहा, "अपनी ताक़त बचा के रखो। आगे ज़रूरत होगी।"

उन्हें पता था की क्या हो रहा है

She knew what was happening,

and she knew what the doctors

उन्हें वो पता था जो डाक्टरों

and the experts and the internet didn't know:

और विशेषज्ञों और इंटर्नेट को भी नहीं पता था:

how she wanted to go through this.

की वो इस से कैसे गुज़रना चाहती थी।

I just needed to ask her.

बस उनसे पूछने भर की देर थी

I realized that if I tried to fix it,

और मुझे समझ आया कि सब ठीक करने में

I would miss it.

तो मैं ये चूक जाऊँगी।

So I just started to be with her,

तो मैंने बस उनके साथ समय बिताना शुरू किया,

चाहे जैसे भी हो, चाहे जैसी भी स्थिति आए,

whatever that meant and whatever situation came up,

just really listen to her.

बस उनकी बात सुनना शुरू किया।

If before I was resisting, then now I was surrendering,

जहाँ मैं पहले बहस में लगी थी, अब बस समर्पण कर चुकी थी,

giving up trying to control the uncontrollable

होनी को बदलने की जद्दोजहद को छोड़ कर

and just being there in it with her.

बस उनके साथ रहने को तैयार हो कर।

Time slowed down,

जैसे समय की गति ही धीमी हो गयी थी,

and the date was irrelevant.

दिन, तारीख सब बेमानी हो गए थे।

हमने एक दिनचर्या बना ली थी।

We developed a routine.

Early each morning I would crawl into bed with her and sleep with her.

हर सुबह मैं उनके बिस्तर में घुस कर चिपक कर सो जाती थी।

मेरा भाई नाश्ते के लिए आ जाता था

My brother would come for breakfast

and we'd be so glad to hear his car coming up the driveway.

और हमें उसके कार की आवाज़ सुन कर बहुत अच्छा लगता था।

So I'd help her up and take both her hands

और में उन्हें उठा कर, उनके दोनो हाथ थाम कर

and help her walk to the kitchen.

उन्हें रसोई तक ले जाती थी।

She had this huge mug she made

उन्हें ख़ुद के बनाए बड़े से मग में

she loved to drink her coffee out of,

कॉफ़ी पीना बड़ा अच्छा लगता था,

and she loved Irish soda bread for breakfast.

और आइरिश सोडा ब्रेड उन्हें पसंद थी।

Afterwards was the shower,

फिर वो स्नान करती थीं,

उन्हें बहुत अच्छा लगता था।

and she loved this part.

She loved the warm water,

उन्हें गरम पानी पसंद था,

so I made this as indulgent as I could,

और में इसे जितना अच्छा हो सके, कर देती थी,

like a spa.

एक स्पा जैसा।

My sister would help sometimes.

कभी कभी मेरी बहन भी मदद करती थी।

हम गरम किए तौलिए

We had warm towels

and slippers ready immediately

और चप्पलें तैयार रखते थे

so she never got cold for a second.

जिस से एक सेकेंड भी उन्हें ठंड न लगे।

I'd blow-dry her hair.

हम उनके बाल सुखाते थे।

My brothers would come in the evenings and bring their kids,

मेरे भाई शाम को अपने बच्चों के साथ आ जाते थे,

और वो दिन का सबसे ख़ास हिस्सा होता था।

and that was the highlight of her day.

धीरे धीरे, वहील चेअर का इस्तेमाल होने लगा,

Over time, we started to use a wheelchair,

और उनकी भूख मिट गयी,

and she didn't want to eat so much,

and she used the tiniest little teacup we could find to drink her coffee.

तो बहुत ही छोटे छोटे कपों में काफ़ी पीने लगीं।

और अब मैं उनका ध्यान नहीं रख पाती थी,

I couldn't support her myself anymore,

तो हमने नहाने में मदद करने के लिए किसी को रखा।

so we hired an aide to help me with the showers.

These simple daily activities

ये दिनचर्या हमारे लिए

ज़रूरी पूजा जैसी हो गयी,

became our sacred ritual,

and we repeated them day after day

और हम दिन पर दिन इसे करते रहे

as the cancer grew.

जैसे जैसे कैन्सर बढ़ा।

It was humbling and painful

ये बहुत कठिन और नम्र कर देने वाला अनुभव था,

and exactly where I wanted to be.

और बिलकुल वैसा था जैसा हम चाहते थे।

हम इसे "सुंदर कठिनाई" कहते थे।

We called this time "the beautiful awful."

She died on October 26, 2012.

वो अक्टूबर 26 2012 को चल बसीं।

कैन्सर पता लगने के 1 साल और 3 हफ़्ते बाद।

It was a year and three weeks after her diagnosis.

She was gone.

वो बस चली गयीं।

My brothers, sister, and father and I

मेरे भाई, बहन, पिता और मैं

all came together in this supportive and attentive way.

एक दूसरे को सहारा देने के लिए साथ आए।

It was as though our whole family dynamic

मानो हमारे पुराने रिश्ते

and all our established roles vanished

और रोल हवा हो गए

and we were just all together in this unknown,

और हम बस इस अनजान जगह साथ थे,

feeling the same thing

एक सी चीज़ को महसूस करते

and taking care of each other.

और एक दूसरे का ख़याल रखते।

I'm so grateful for them.

मैं उनकी बहुत शुक्रगुज़ार हूँ।

मैं अकेले स्टूडीओ में काम करते हुए अपना समय बिताती हूँ,

As someone who spends most of my time alone in a studio working,

I had no idea that this kind of connection

मुझे अंदाज़ा ही नहीं था की ऐसे जुड़ना

could be so important, so healing.

इतना ज़रूरी और इतना सहारा दे सकता है।

This was the most important thing.

ये सब से महत्वपूर्ण बात थी।

मैंने हमेशा यही तो चाहा था।

It was what I always wanted.

तो अंत्येष्टि के बाद, मुझे वापस अपने स्टूडीओ जाना था।

So after the funeral, it was time for me to go back to my studio.

So I packed up my car and I drove back to Brooklyn,

मैंने अपना समान कार में भरा और ब्रुकलिन चली गयी,

and painting is what I've always done, so that's what I did.

क्यूँकि मैं पेंटिंग ही जानती थी, मैं उसमें जुट गयी।

And here's what happened.

और फिर कुछ अलग ही हुआ।

जैसे अपने भीतर भारी चीज़ों को आज़ादी मिल गयी हो।

It's like a release of everything that was unraveling in me.

That safe, very, very carefully rendered safe place

वो सुरक्षित, सम्हाल के सब करने वाला तारिक

that I created in all my other paintings,

जिस से मैं अपना सारा काम करती थी,

it was a myth.

वो सब झूठ था,

वो काम ही नहीं आया।

It didn't work.

And I was afraid, because I didn't want to paint anymore.

और मुझे डर गयी - अब मेरा पेंट करने का मन ही नहीं करता था।

तो मैं जंगलों में चली गयी।

So I went into the woods.

I thought, I'll try that, going outside.

मैंने सोचा, बाहर निकालने की कोशिश करते हैं,

I got my paints, and I wasn't a landscape painter,

मैंने अपने पेंट लिए, और मैं प्रकृति चित्र नहीं बनाती थी,

और किसी ख़ास विधा में तो बिलकुल नहीं बनाती थी,

but I wasn't really much of any kind of painter at all,

so I had no attachment, no expectation,

तो ना कोई लगाव था, ना कोई आशा,

which allowed me to be reckless and free.

और मैं खुल कर पेंट करने लगी।

I actually left one of these wet paintings

मैंने एक पानी वाली पेंटिंग को

outside overnight

रात भर बाहर छोड़ दिया।

जंगल में एक रोशनी के बग़ल में।

next to a light in the woods.

By the morning it was lacquered with bugs.

सुबह तक इसमें तमाम कीड़े चिपक गए थे।

But I didn't care. It didn't matter. It didn't matter.

मगर मुझे फ़र्क़ नहीं पड़ा। किसी बात से कोई फ़र्क़ नहीं पड़ा।

उन सब पेंटिंग को स्टूडीओ ले जा के,

I took all these paintings back to my studio,

and scraped them, and carved into them,

उन्हें घिसा, उनमे छेद किए,

and poured paint thinner on them,

उनपे थिनर उँडेल दिया,

put more paint on top, drew on them.

और पेंट लगाया, उनके ऊपर और बनाया,

कही कोई प्लान नहीं था,

I had no plan,

but I was watching what was happening.

मगर मैं देख रही थी की कुछ हो रहा था।

This is the one with all the bugs in it.

ये वो कीड़े वाली पेंटिंग है।

I wasn't trying to represent a real space.

मैं कोई असल जगह बनाने की कोशिश में नहीं थी।

इनकी उथलपथल और गड़बड़ियाँ मुझे आकर्षित करते थे,

It was the chaos and the imperfections that were fascinating me,

and something started to happen.

और कुछ नया सा घटना शुरू हुआ गया।

I got curious again.

मैं फिर से जिज्ञासु हो उठी।

This is another one from the woods.

ये जंगलों में बनायी एक और पेंटिंग है।

There was a caveat now, though.

बस एक कमी थी,

की मेरे रंग अब मेरे बस में नहीं रह गए थे।

I couldn't be controlling the paint like I used to.

बस अपने आप सब होता चलता था,

It had to be about implying and suggesting,

ना समझना ना बताना।

not explaining or describing.

And that imperfect, chaotic, turbulent surface

और वही अस्तव्यस्त उबाल भरी हलचल

एक कहानी कह रही थी।

is what told the story.

I started to be as curious as I was when I was a student.

मैं अपने विद्यार्थी जीवन जितनी उत्सुक और जिज्ञासु हो गयी थी।

और फिर में इन पेंटिंगो में लोगों को डालने लगी,

So the next thing was I wanted to put figures in these paintings, people,

और मुझे ये नया परिवेश बहुत अच्छा लगा

and I loved this new environment,

so I wanted to have both people and this atmosphere.

मैं लोगों को और इस परिवेश दोनो को मिलना चाहती थी।

When the idea hit me of how to do this,

जब मुझे समझ आया की ये कैसे करना है,

I got kind of nauseous and dizzy,

तो मैं बिलकुल पसर से गयी,

which is really just adrenaline, probably,

शायद अड्रेनलिन के वजह से,

but for me it's a really good sign.

मगर मेरे लिए वो बढ़िया लक्षण था।

And so now I want to show you what I've been working on.

तो अब मैं आपको दिखाना चाहती हूँ की मैं क्या करती रही हूँ।

It's something I haven't shown yet, and it's like a preview, I guess,

अभी तक इसे किसी ने नहीं देखा है, समझ लीजिए, ख़ास झलक है,

of my upcoming show,

मेरे अगले शो की,

अब तक इतना हो चुका है।

what I have so far.

Expansive space

विशाल जगह

अलग थलग बाथटब की जगह।

instead of the isolated bathtub.

I'm going outside instead of inside.

बाहर की ओर जाना, अंदर बंद होने के बजाय।

Loosening control,

कंट्रोल छोड़ना,

savoring the imperfections,

गड़बड़ को एकाकार करना,

allowing the --

इजाज़त देना --

कि खोट होती है तो हो जाए।

allowing the imperfections.

And in that imperfection,

और उन्हीं त्रुटियों में,

you can find a vulnerability.

एक नाज़ुकपन का एहसास निकालना।

I could feel my deepest intention, what matters most to me,

मैं अपने अंदर की गहरी भावनाओं तक पहुँच सकी,

उस इंसानी जुड़ाव तक

that human connection

that can happen in a space where there's no resisting or controlling.

जो तब ही हो सकता है जब पूरी तरह से आज़ाद हो कर जुड़ा जाए।

I want to make paintings about that.

अपनी पेंटिंग में वही लाना चाहती हूँ।

So here's what I learned.

तो मैंने ये सीखा कि ---

We're all going to have big losses in our lives,

हम अब अपने जीवन में बड़ी त्रासदियों से गुज़रेंगे,

शायद नौकरी, करियर,

maybe a job or a career,

रिश्ते, प्यार, जवानी से जुड़े।

relationships, love, our youth.

We're going to lose our health,

हम बीमार हो जाएँगे,

people we love.

हम अपनो को खो देंगे।

These kinds of losses are out of our control.

इस तरह के नुक़सान हमारे वश के बाहर हैं।

They're unpredictable,

ये कभी भी हो सकते हैं,

and they bring us to our knees.

और ये हमें तोड़ डालते हैं।

And so I say, let them.

तो मैं कहती हूँ , तोड़ने दो।

Fall to your knees. Be humbled.

गिर जाओ। अपनी क्षणभंगुरता का सामना करो।

Let go of trying to change it

उसे रोकने की नाकाम कोशिश से आगे जाओ

or even wanting it to be different.

उसे बदलने में मत उलझो।

It just is.

ऐसा बस होता है।

और तब वो जगह मिलेगी,

And then there's space,

and in that space feel your vulnerability,

और उस जगह में अपनी कमज़ोरी से सामना होगा,

what matters most to you,

वो मिलेगा जो आपके लिए सबसे ज़रूरी होगा,

your deepest intention.

आपका सबसे गहरा ध्येय।

And be curious to connect

और उस से जुड़ने के लिए उत्सुक

to what and who is really here,

जो वहाँ है,

awake and alive.

जागता और जीता।

हम सब वही खोज रहे हैं।

It's what we all want.

Let's take the opportunity to find something beautiful

आइए कुछ ख़ूबसूरत सा ढूँढे

in the unknown, in the unpredictable,

इस दुनिया में - जो अनजान, अप्रत्याशित,

and even in the awful.

बल्कि बदसूरत भी है।
