I'm a painter.

that changed my work and my perspective.

제 작업, 관점을 바꿔놓은 사건에 대해서요.

It's something we all go through,

이건 우리 모두가 겪는 일입니다.

and my hope is that my experience may be helpful to somebody.

그리고 제 이야기가 누군가에게 도움이 되기를 바랍니다.

To give you some background on me, I grew up the youngest of eight.

제 성장배경을 말하자면, 저는 8남매중 막내로 태어났어요.

Yes, eight kids in my family.

그래요 8남매죠.

I have six older brothers and a sister.

오빠 여섯 명과 언니 한 명이 있습니다.

To give you a sense of what that's like,

그건 어떤 느낌이냐면

when my family went on vacation,

우리 가족이 휴가를 간다치면

we had a bus.

버스를 빌려야죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

My supermom would drive us all over town

제 위대한 엄마는 온 마을을 운전해서

to our various after-school activities --

우리들을 방과후 프로그램에 데려다 주셨어요.

not in the bus.

버스는 아니지만요

We had a regular car, too.

평범한 차도 있었습니다.

She would take me to art classes,

엄마는 저를 미술 수업에 데려다주곤 했습니다.

and not just one or two.

한 두번만 그런게 아니라

She took me to every available art class from when I was eight to 16,

모든 미술수업 때마다 그랬죠. 제가 8살부터 16살까지요.

because that's all I wanted to do.

제가 너무 가고싶어 했거든요.

She even took a class with me in New York City.

심지어 저를 데리고 뉴욕의 수업에도 갔습니다.

Now, being the youngest of eight, I learned a few survival skills.

8남매중 막내로 살다보니 몇가지 생존방식을 익혔어요.

Rule number one:

첫쨰

don't let your big brother see you do anything stupid.

큰 오빠가 당신의 바보짓을 못보게 하라.

So I learned to be quiet and neat

그래서 저는 조용하고 단정하게 생활했고

and careful to follow the rules and stay in line.

신중하게 규칙을 지키고 평범하게 지내는 걸 배웠습니다.

But painting was where I made the rules.

하지만 그림에서는 제가 규칙을 정했죠.

That was my private world.

제 개인적인 세상이었죠.

By 14, I knew I really wanted to be an artist.

14살 무렵에 제가 진짜로 예술인이 되고싶어 한다는 걸 깨달았습니다.

My big plan was to be a waitress to support my painting.

제 원대한 계획은 그림을 그릴 수 있게 식당직원을 하는 것이었죠.

So I continued honing my skills.

저는 계속해서 제 실력을 갈고 닦았고

I went to graduate school and I got an MFA,

대학원을 졸업해 순수미술석사(MFA)를 땄습니다.

and at my first solo show, my brother asked me,

그리고 제 첫 개인전에서 제 오빠는 이렇게 물었습니다.

"What do all these red dots mean next to the paintings?"

"그림 옆에 이 빨간점들은 무슨 뜻이야?"

Nobody was more surprised than me.

저보다 더 크게 놀란 사람은 없을걸요.

The red dots meant that the paintings were sold

그 빨간점은 제 그림이 팔렸다는 뜻이고

and that I'd be able to pay my rent

제가 스스로 집세를 낼 수 있게 됐다는 뜻이었죠.

with painting.

그림으로요.

Now, my apartment had four electrical outlets,

제 아파트엔 전기 콘센트가 4개 있었습니다.

and I couldn't use a microwave and a toaster at the same time,

저는 전자레인지와 토스터를 동시에 사용할 수 없었어요.

but still, I could pay my rent.

하지만 뭐 어떄요. 제가 집세를 낼 수 있는걸요.

So I was very happy.

너무 기뻤어요.

Here's a painting from back around that time.

그 무렵에 그렸던 그림입니다.

I needed it to be as realistic as possible.

최대한 현실적으로 그릴 필요가 있었고

It had to be specific and believable.

구체적이고 그럴듯하게 그렸습니다.

This was the place where I was isolated and in total control.

이곳은 저만 따로 떨어진 장소고 완벽하게 제 통제하에 있는 곳입니다.

Since then, I've made a career of painting people in water.

그 때부터 저는 '물속의 사람' 이라는 주제로 그림을 그려나갔습니다.

Bathtubs and showers were the perfect enclosed environment.

욕조, 샤워룸은 정말 완벽하게 격리된 환경이죠.

It was intimate and private,

친숙하고 또 개인적인 공간입니다.

and water was this complicated challenge that kept me busy for a decade.

그리고 '물' 은 아주 심오한 주제라서 십여 년간 바쁘게 활동했습니다.

I made about 200 of these paintings,

거의 200장의 그림을 그렸지요.

some of them six to eight feet,

어떤 것은 2m가 넘기도 합니다.

like this one.

이것처럼요.

For this painting, I mixed flour in with the bathwater to make it cloudy

이걸 그리려고 저는 욕조물에 밀가루를 타서 탁하게 만들고

and I floated cooking oil on the surface

표면에다가는 식용유를 띄운 다음에

and stuck a girl in it,

여자를 넣었죠.

and when I lit it up,

그리고 불을 밝혔을 때

it was so beautiful I couldn't wait to paint it.

너무 예뻤어요. 그리지 않고는 참을 수 없었습니다.

I was driven by this kind of impulsive curiosity,

저는 늘 충동적인 호기심에 이끌렸습니다.

always looking for something new to add:

새로 더할건 없을까 찾아다녔습니다.

vinyl, steam, glass.

이를테면 비닐이나 연기, 유리 등등이요.

I once put all this Vaseline in my head and hair

언제는 바셀린 한통을 제 머리에 부은 적도 있습니다.

just to see what that would look like.

어떤 모습일지 보려고요.

Don't do that.

따라하지 마세요.

(Laughter)

So it was going well.

어쨌든 잘 풀려갔습니다.

I was finding my way.

제 길을 찾았죠.

I was eager and motivated

열정적이고 의욕적이었습니다.

and surrounded by artists,

주변엔 예술가들이 많이 있었고

always going to openings and events.

개막전과 행사에 다녔죠.

I was having some success and recognition

조금씩 성공하면서 좋은 평판을 얻어나갔습니다.

and I moved into an apartment with more than four outlets.

콘센트 4개짜리 아파트에서 더 좋은 곳으로 이사도 갔죠.

My mom and I would stay up very late

저와 엄마는 매일밤 늦게까지 안자고

talking about our latest ideas and inspiring each other.

아이디어를 내놓으며 서로의 영감이 되었습니다.

She made beautiful pottery.

그너는 멋진 도자기를 만드는 일을 해요.

I have a friend named Bo who made this painting

'보' 라는 친구가 있었는데 그는 이런 그림을 그렸습니다.

of his wife and I dancing by the ocean,

그의 아내와 제가 해변가에서 춤추는 그림이죠.

and he called it "The Light Years."

제목은 '즐거운 나날'입니다.

I asked him what that meant, and he said,

무슨 뜻이냐고 물어보니 그는 이렇게 대답했습니다.

"Well, that's when you've stepped into adulthood, you're no longer a child,

"아, 그때는 네가 어른이 되가는 시절이었어. 지금 넌 더이상 어린이가 아니야"

but you're not yet weighed down by the responsibilities of life."

"하지만 아직 현실의 무게에 짓눌리지는 않은 것 같구나"

That was it. It was the light years.

그래요. 즐거운 나날이었어요.

On October 8, 2011,

2011년 10월 8일.

the light years came to an end.

저의 빛나는 시절은 끝이 났습니다.

My mom was diagnosed with lung cancer.

저희 엄마가 폐암 진단을 받았어요.

It had spread to her bones, and it was in her brain.

암세포는 뼈와 뇌로 확산 되어갔습니다.

When she told me this, I fell to my knees.

처음 그얘기를 들었을 때 저는 그대로 주저 앉아버렸어요.

I totally lost it.

상실감에 빠졌죠.

And when I got myself together and I looked at her,

정신을 차리고 그녀를 봤을 때 전 깨달았죠.

I realized, this isn't about me.

'암에 걸린 건 내가 아니잖아'

This is about figuring out how to help her.

'엄마를 도울 방법을 생각해야 해.'

My father is a doctor,

저희 아버지는 의사입니다.

and so we had a great advantage having him in charge,

그래서 아빠를 엄마의 담당 의사로 붙일 수 있었죠.

and he did a beautiful job taking care of her.

아버지는 엄마를 정성껏 돌봤습니다.

But I, too, wanted to do everything I could to help,

하지만 저도 도움이 될 수 있다면 뭐든지 하고 싶었습니다.

so I wanted to try everything.

그래서 모든 걸 다 시도해봤어요.

We all did.

다 해봤죠.

I researched alternative medicines,

대체의학을 조사해보고

diets, juicing, acupuncture.

식이요법, 생식, 침술까지요.

Finally, I asked her,

나중에 엄마에게 이렇게 물었습니다.

"Is this what you want me to do?"

"제가 이렇게 하는 게 좋겠어요?"

And she said, "No."

엄마는 "아니" 라고 말했습니다.

She said, "Pace yourself. I'm going to need you later."

"침착하렴. 나중에 네가 필요하단다" 라고 말했습니다.

She knew what was happening,

그녀는 현재 상황을 이미 알고 있었습니다.

and she knew what the doctors

그리고 그녀는 수많은 의사들과

and the experts and the internet didn't know:

전문가들, 인터넷 조차도 잘 모른다는 걸 알았습니다.

how she wanted to go through this.

그녀가 이 상황을 어떻게 받아들이려는지 몰랐죠.

I just needed to ask her.

그래서 엄마에게 그렇게 물어봤습니다.

I realized that if I tried to fix it,

병을 낫게하려고 여기저기 돌아다니다가

I would miss it.

놓쳐버릴 것 같았았거든요.

So I just started to be with her,

그래서 저는 엄마와 함께 있어주기로 했습니다.

whatever that meant and whatever situation came up,

그게 무슨 의미이든지 어떤 상황이 오더라도

just really listen to her.

그저 그녀의 말을 듣기로 했습니다.

If before I was resisting, then now I was surrendering,

예전의 제가 끝까지 저항하고 싸운 거라면 지금은 백기를 든 거죠.

giving up trying to control the uncontrollable

통제 불가능한 것을 통제하려고 애쓰는 걸 포기했죠.

and just being there in it with her.

엄마와 같은 곳에 있어주었습니다.

Time slowed down,

시간은 느리게 가고

and the date was irrelevant.

날짜는 상관없었습니다.

We developed a routine.

우린 새로운 일과를 만들었습니다.

Early each morning I would crawl into bed with her and sleep with her.

매일 이른 아침엔 엄마 침대에 기어들어가서 같이 자고

My brother would come for breakfast

오빠가 같이 아침 먹으러 왔죠.

and we'd be so glad to hear his car coming up the driveway.

오빠 차가 오는 소리가 들리면 둘다 들뜨기 시작했습니다.

So I'd help her up and take both her hands

저는 엄마를 도와서 양손을 잡고

and help her walk to the kitchen.

부엌으로 가는 걸 도와줬습니다.

She had this huge mug she made

엄마가 만든 엄청 큰 머그잔이 있었는데

she loved to drink her coffee out of,

그 잔에 커피를 담아 마시는 걸 좋아했습니다.

and she loved Irish soda bread for breakfast.

거기다 아이리시 브레드를 아침으로 먹곤했죠.

Afterwards was the shower,

그 다음 할일은 샤워입니다.

and she loved this part.

샤워하는 걸 좋아하셨어요.

She loved the warm water,

따뜻한 물을 좋아하셨어요.

so I made this as indulgent as I could,

그래서 가능한 맘껏 하시도록 했어요.

like a spa.

온천 처럼요.

My sister would help sometimes.

가끔 언니가 도와주러 왔습니다.

We had warm towels

따뜻한 수건이랑

and slippers ready immediately

슬리퍼를 즉시 준비해서

so she never got cold for a second.

엄마가 단 일초라도 춥지 않게 했죠.

I'd blow-dry her hair.

머리를 드라이기로 말려주고

My brothers would come in the evenings and bring their kids,

오빠가 저녁에 아이들을 데려왔고

and that was the highlight of her day.

그때가 하루의 최고 순간입니다.

Over time, we started to use a wheelchair,

시간이 흐르고 엄마는 휠체어를 타게 됐습니다.

and she didn't want to eat so much,

많이 드시고 싶어하지 않았어요.

and she used the tiniest little teacup we could find to drink her coffee.

그리고 그녀는 제일 작은 컵으로 커피를 마셨습니다.

I couldn't support her myself anymore,

저 혼자선 더 이상 엄마를 어떻게 보살펴드려야 할지 몰라서

so we hired an aide to help me with the showers.

도우미를 고용해서 샤워하는 걸 도왔습니다.

These simple daily activities

이런 간단한 활동조차도

became our sacred ritual,

매우 소중한 행사가 됐습니다.

and we repeated them day after day

그리고 그걸 매일매일 반복했죠.

as the cancer grew.

암은 점점 악화되갔습니다.

It was humbling and painful

겸허하게 하고 고통스러운 일이었습니다.

and exactly where I wanted to be.

그러면서도 제가 있고 싶은 곳임을 알았습니다.

We called this time "the beautiful awful."

우리는 이 순간을 '아름답지만 끔찍한' 시간이라 부르곤 했습니다.

She died on October 26, 2012.

그녀는 8월 26일, 2012년에 숨을 거둡니다.

It was a year and three weeks after her diagnosis.

암을 선고받고 1년 하고 3주가 지난 날이죠.

She was gone.

돌아가셨어요.

My brothers, sister, and father and I

오빠와 언니, 그리고 아버지와 저까지

all came together in this supportive and attentive way.

모두 모여서 서로 도와주며 귀를 기울여주었습니다.

It was as though our whole family dynamic

마치 우리 가족 모두의 원동력과

and all our established roles vanished

각자의 역할들 모두가 사라진 것 같았어요.

and we were just all together in this unknown,

그리고 우리 가족 모두 이 미지의 느낌을 느꼈습니다.

feeling the same thing

and taking care of each other.

그리고 서로를 신경써줬습니다.

I'm so grateful for them.

저는 그들에게 너무 감사해요.

As someone who spends most of my time alone in a studio working,

제 시간의 대부분을 스튜디오에서 작업하면서 보내느라

I had no idea that this kind of connection

저는 이런 종류의 연대감이

could be so important, so healing.

중요하고 치유가 된다는 걸 몰랐었습니다.

This was the most important thing.

세상에서 가장 중요한 것임을요.

It was what I always wanted.

제가 항상 원하던 거였어요.

So after the funeral, it was time for me to go back to my studio.

어쩄든, 장례식이 끝나고 저는 스튜디오로 돌아가야만 했어요.

So I packed up my car and I drove back to Brooklyn,

차에다 짐을 꾸리고 브루클린으로 돌아갔아요.

and painting is what I've always done, so that's what I did.

전 항상 그림만 그려왔고 그것만이 제 할일 이었습니다.

And here's what happened.

이런 일이 생겼습니다.

It's like a release of everything that was unraveling in me.

이건 마치 제 안의 모든 걸 표출하는 것 같습니다.

That safe, very, very carefully rendered safe place

안전하게, 매우 매우 신경써서 안전하게 만든 장소에요.

that I created in all my other paintings,

다른 그림들에도 이런 장소를 만들었죠.

it was a myth.

소용없었어요.

It didn't work.

효과가 없었습니다.

And I was afraid, because I didn't want to paint anymore.

더이상 내가 그림을 그리고 싶어하지 않는 걸까 두려웠습니다.

So I went into the woods.

그래서 숲속으로 갔습니다.

I thought, I'll try that, going outside.

숨지말고 바깥으로 나와서 도전해보자.

I got my paints, and I wasn't a landscape painter,

그리고 그렸죠. 저는 그동안 풍경화는 안그렸지만

but I wasn't really much of any kind of painter at all,

그렇다고 딱히 그림 성향이 있던 것도 아니었죠.

so I had no attachment, no expectation,

한곳에 머무르지 않고 딱히 기대감도 없습니다.

which allowed me to be reckless and free.

그래서 저는 무모하고 자유로웠죠.

I actually left one of these wet paintings

저는 사실 이 수채화들을 그렸어요.

outside overnight

하룻밤 사이에

next to a light in the woods.

숲속에서 불을 켜놓은 채로요.

By the morning it was lacquered with bugs.

아침 무렵엔 그 그림은 벌레들로 떡칠이 됐지만요.

But I didn't care. It didn't matter. It didn't matter.

하지만 별로 신경 안썼습니다. 상관없었죠.

I took all these paintings back to my studio,

이 그림들을 스튜디오로 가지고 와서

and scraped them, and carved into them,

긁어내고 파낸 다음에

and poured paint thinner on them,

거기에 물감 용해제를 붓고

put more paint on top, drew on them.

그 위에 물감을 얹어서 그렸습니다.

I had no plan,

딱히 계획같은 건 없었습니다.

but I was watching what was happening.

그리고 무슨 일이 일어났나 보았습니다.

This is the one with all the bugs in it.

이게 그 벌레 투성이었던 그림입니다.

I wasn't trying to represent a real space.

저는 실제 공간을 그리려고 했는데

It was the chaos and the imperfections that were fascinating me,

혼돈스럽게 됐고 이 불완전한 모습은 정말 매력적입니다.

and something started to happen.

그리고 뭔가가 일어나기 시작했습니다.

I got curious again.

다시 궁금해졌죠.

This is another one from the woods.

이건 숲에서 그린 또 다른 그림입니다.

There was a caveat now, though.

뭔가가 저에게 경고를 했죠.

I couldn't be controlling the paint like I used to.

예전에 그랬던 것처럼 그림 그리는 걸 통제할 수가 없었습니다.

It had to be about implying and suggesting,

그저 어렴풋이 느끼거나 암시할 수 있을 뿐

not explaining or describing.

정확히 설명하거나 묘사할 수는 없는 느낌이었죠.

And that imperfect, chaotic, turbulent surface

그 그림의 불완전하고 혼돈스럽고 격동적인 표면이

is what told the story.

이야기를 들려주었습니다.

I started to be as curious as I was when I was a student.

저는 학생 때로 되돌아간 것처럼 호기심이 가득해졌습니다.

So the next thing was I wanted to put figures in these paintings, people,

다음번 그림엔 사람들을 그려넣고 싶어졌어요.

and I loved this new environment,

저는 이 새로운 방식이 맘에 들었습니다.

so I wanted to have both people and this atmosphere.

그래서 사람과 이 풍경을 섞어놓고 싶었습니다.

When the idea hit me of how to do this,

그 아이디어가 떠오르자

I got kind of nauseous and dizzy,

약간 헛구역질도나고 어지러웠지만

which is really just adrenaline, probably,

아마도 아드레날린이 분출되서 그런걸 거예요.

but for me it's a really good sign.

저에게는 좋은 신호였죠.

And so now I want to show you what I've been working on.

그래서 제가 그린 작업물을 보여드릴까 해요.

It's something I haven't shown yet, and it's like a preview, I guess,

아직 한번도 공개하지 않은 것들이고 일종의 시사회라고 해두죠.

of my upcoming show,

곧 열릴 제 전시회의 시사회죠.

what I have so far.

지금까지 그린 것들입니다.

Expansive space

탁 트인 공간입니다.

instead of the isolated bathtub.

고립된 욕조가 아니라요.

I'm going outside instead of inside.

집안이 아니라 밖으로 나갔죠.

Loosening control,

통제하는걸 줄이고

savoring the imperfections,

불완전함을 음미했습니다.

allowing the --

그건 저에게

allowing the imperfections.

그건 저에게 불완전함을 허락했죠.

And in that imperfection,

그 불완전함 속에서

you can find a vulnerability.

나약함을 발견할 수 있습니다.

I could feel my deepest intention, what matters most to me,

제 가장 깊숙히 숨어있는 생각, 저에게 있어 가장 중요한 것들을요.

that human connection

그건 인간과의 관계입니다.

that can happen in a space where there's no resisting or controlling.

그건 어떤 저항도, 통제도 없는 영역에서 생기는 것입니다.

I want to make paintings about that.

그걸 그리고 싶었어요.

So here's what I learned.

여기서 하나 배운 것이 있습니다.

We're all going to have big losses in our lives,

우리 모두는 삶을 살면서 큰 상실감을 느낄 것입니다

maybe a job or a career,

아마 직업에서, 직장생활에서

relationships, love, our youth.

인간관계에서나, 사랑을 하다가, 어린 시절에서도요.

We're going to lose our health,

건강을 잃을 수도 있고

people we love.

우리가 사랑하는 사람을 잃을 수도 있습니다.

These kinds of losses are out of our control.

이런 상실들은 저희가 통제하지 못합니다.

They're unpredictable,

예측할 수 없지요.

and they bring us to our knees.

우리를 무릎꿇게 만들 겁니다.

And so I say, let them.

저는 이렇게 말할 겁니다. 그저 두세요.

Fall to your knees. Be humbled.

무릎 꿇고 겸허해지세요.

Let go of trying to change it

상황을 바꾸려는 시도를 손에서 놓아버리세요.

or even wanting it to be different.

상황이 달라지기를 기도하지 마세요.

It just is.

그건 그런 거예요.

And then there's space,

여러분 마음 속엔 어떤 공간이 있어요.

and in that space feel your vulnerability,

그곳에 있는 여러분의 나약함을 받아들이세요.

what matters most to you,

여러분에게 가장 중요한 것은

your deepest intention.

가장 깊숙한 곳에 숨어있는 여러분의 생각이죠.

And be curious to connect

호기심을 가지고

to what and who is really here,

그곳에 무엇이, 누가 자리잡고 있는지 보세요.

awake and alive.

그것들은 깨어있고 생생하게 살아있습니다.

It's what we all want.

그것들은 우리가 진정으로 원하는 것이죠.

Let's take the opportunity to find something beautiful

아름다운 것을 찾을 수 있는 기회를 잡으세요.

in the unknown, in the unpredictable,

비록 알 수 없는 것이라도, 예측할 수 없더라도

and even in the awful.

심지어 끔직해도요.
