Three years ago,

I started building a decentralized web

because I was worried about the future of our internet.

The current internet we are using is about gatekeepers.

If you want to reach something on the web,

then you need to go through multiple middlemen.

First, a domain name server,

then a server hosting company,

which usually points you to a third party,

to a web hosting service.

And this happens every time you want to reach a website on the web.

But these gatekeepers are vulnerable to internet attacks

and also makes the censorship and the surveillance easier.

And the situation is getting worse.

Everything is moving to the cloud,

where the data is hosted by giant corporations.

لەوێدا داتاکان لە لایەن .ڕێکخراوە گەورەکان هۆست دەکرێت

This move creates much, much more powerful middlemen.

ئەم جوڵانەوەیە چەندین نێوەندگیری .بەهێزتر دروست دەکات

Now, move to the cloud makes sense

ڕۆشتن بەرەو هەڵگرتنی کڵاود زۆر باشە

because this way it's easier and cheaper

لەبەر ئەوەی زۆر هەرزان و ئاسانە

for the developers and the service operators.

بۆ پەرەپێدەرەکان و بەکارهێنەری .خزمەتگوزاریەکان

They don't have to worry about maintaining the physical servers.

پێویست ناکات خەمی .بە سێرڤەری فیزیکیەکانیان بێت

I can't blame them, but I found this trend to be very dangerous,

ناهەقیان ناگرم بەڵام ئەم ،ڕەوتە دەشێت زۆر مەترسیداربێت

because this way, these giant corporations

لەبەر ئەوەی ئەم کۆمپانیا گەورانە

have unlimited control over the hosting services.

دەسەڵاتێکی بێسنوریان هەیە لەسەر .هۆستین و خزمەتگوزاریەکانی

And it's very easy to abuse this power.

زۆر ئاسانیشە ئەم دەسەڵاتە .بە خراپی بەکاربهێنرێت

For example, last year, a CEO of a company

،بۆ نمونە ساڵی پار بەرێوبەڕی کۆمپانیایەک

that acts as a gatekeeper for nine million websites

کە وەک دەرگاوانێک کاردەکات .بۆ نۆ ملیۆن وێبسایت

decided, after some public pressure,

لە دەرئەنجامی چەند کاریگەریەکی خەڵکی بڕیاریدا

that one of the sites it manages,

،یەکێک لەو وێبسایتانەی کە بەڕێوەی دەبات

a far right page, should be blocked.

.ماڵپەڕێکی ڕاست ڕەو پێویستە بلۆک بکرێت

He then sent an internal email to his coworkers.

لەدوای ئەوە ئیمەیڵێکی نارد بۆ ئەو .فەرمانبەرانەی کە کاری بۆ دەکەن

"This was an arbitrary decision.

.ئەمە بڕیارێکی هاکەزایی بوو"

I woke up this morning in a bad mood

ئەم بەیانیە بە مەزاجێکی خراپەوە لە خەو هەستام

and decided to kick them off the Internet."

". بڕیارمدا لە ئینتەرنێت دەریان بکەم

Even he admits,

،هەروەها دانی پێدا دەنێت

"No one should have this power."

".هیچ کەس نابێت ئەم دەسەڵاتەی هەبێت"

As a response, one of the employees asked him,

،وەک وەڵامێک، یەکێک لە فەرمانبەرەکان پرسی

"Is this the day the Internet dies?"

"ئەمە ئەو ڕۆژەیە کە ئینتەرنێت کۆتایی دێت؟"

I don't think we are actually killing the internet,

باوەڕم وانییە ئێمە بە ڕاستی ،ئینتەرنێت بکوژین

بەڵام وا بیردەکەمەوە کە ئێمە لە ناوەندێکی

but I do think that we are in the middle

of a kind of irresponsible centralization process

نابەرپرسیارانەی پرۆسەی بە ناوەندی کردنی ئینتەرنێتین

that makes our internet more fragile.

The decentralized, people-to-people web

solves this problem by removing the central points,

the web-hosting services.

It empowers the users

ئەمە هێز دەداتە بەکارهێنەرەکان

to have host sites they want to preserve.

بۆ ئەوەی ئەو سایتی هۆستانەیان هەبێت .کە دەیانەوێت

On this network, the sites get downloaded directly from other visitors.

لەم نێتوۆرکە، سایتەکان بە ڕاستەوخۆیی لە .سەردانکەرانەوە داونلۆد دەبێت

ئەمەش ئەوە دەگەێنێت ،ئەگەر ماڵپەڕێکت هەبێت بە ١٠٠ سەردانکەر

This means, if you have a site with 100 visitors,

then it's hosted [by] 100 computers around the world.

واتە لەلایەن ١٠٠ کۆمپیوتەر .لە جیهاندا هۆست کراوە

Basically, this is a people-powered version of the internet.

لە بنەڕەتدا ئەمە ئەو ئینتەرنێتەیە .کە لەلایەن خەڵکیەوە کار دەکات

The security of the network is provided by public-key cryptography.

ئاساییشیی تۆڕەکە لەلایەن پەبڵیک کی .کریپتۆگرافی دادەنرێت

This makes sure that no one can modify the sites

بۆ ئەوەی دڵنیا ببینەوە لە ئەوەی کە کەس ناتوانێت سایتەکان دەستکاری بکات

but only the real owner.

Think of it like instead of getting electricity from big power plants,

you put solar panels on top of your house,

and if your neighbor down the street needs some extra energy,

then they can just download some from your house.

So by using the decentralized web,

بە بەکارهێنانی تۆڕێکی بێ سەنتەر

we can help to keep content accessible for other visitors.

دەتوانین بهێڵین بەرهەمەکان بەردەستبێت بۆ سەردانکەرانی تر،

And by that, it means

:ئەوەش دەگەێنێت کە

that we can also fight against things

دەتوانین دژی ئەوانە بجەنگین کە بە نادادپەروەری دەبینین

that we feel are unjust,

like censorship.

In China, the internet is tightly controlled.

لە چین، ئینتەرنێت بە تەواوی کۆنترۆڵ کراوە.

They can't criticize the government,

،ناتوانن تەنانەت ڕەخنە لە حوکمەت بگرن

organize a protest,

،یان خۆپیشاندانێک ڕێکبخەن

and it's also forbidden to post

تەنانەت ناتوانیت

a kind of emoticon to remember the victims of the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

ئیمۆجیەک بەکاربێنن بۆ هاوخەمی بۆ .قوربانیان کوشتاری گۆڕەپانی تیانانممێن

With the decentralized web, it's not the government that decides

،لەگەڵ ئینتەرنێتێکی بێ سەنتەر بەدەست حوکمەت نییە بڕیار بدات

what gets seen and what doesn't.

.چی دەربکەوێت و چی دەرنەکەوێت

It's the people,

،بەڵکو خەڵکەکەیە

which makes the web more democratic.

،وا دەکات ئینتەرنێت زۆر دیموکراسیانە بێت

بەڵام، لە هەمان کاتدا زۆر ئەستەمە ئەم تۆڕە بەکاربهێنیت

But at the same time, it's hard to use this network

to do something that is clearly illegal

بۆ ئەوەی شتێک بکەیت کە نایاساییە

everywhere in the world,

،لە هەمووشوێنێکی جیهان

as the users probably don't want to endanger themselves

لەبەر ئەوەی بەکارهێنەران نایانەوێت ژیانی خۆیان بخەنە مەترسییەوە

hosting these kinds of problematic content.

.بە هۆست کردنی ئەم بەرهەمە پڕ کێشانە

Another increasing threat

یەکێکە لە هەرەشە گەورەکان

to internet freedom

بۆ ئازادی ئینتەرنێت

is overregulation.

.یاسادانانی زیاد لە پێویستە

I have the impression

ئەم باوەڕەم هەیە کە

that our delegates

نوێنەرەکانمان

who vote on the internet regulation laws

کە لەسەر یاساکانی ئینتەرنێت دەنگ دەدەن

are not fully aware of their decisions.

.زۆر ئاگاداری بڕیارەکانیان نین

For example, the European Parliament has a new law on the table,

بۆ نمونە پەرلەمانی ئەوروپا ،یاسایەکی نوێی هەیە

a new copyright protection law,

یاسایەکی نوێی مافی لەبەرگرتنەوە

that has a part called Article 13.

.لە بەشێکی ماددەی ١٣دا

If it passes, it would require every big website

،ئەگەر جێبەجێ بکرێت ئەوا داوادەکرێت کە هەر وێبسایتێکی گەورە

to implement a filter

فلتەرێک دابنێت

that automatically blocks content

کە بە شێوەیەکی ئۆتۆماتیکی هەندێک بەرهەم بلۆک دەکات

based on rules controlled by big corporations.

لەسەر بنەمای هەندێک یاسا کە لەلایەن .کۆمپانیا گەورەکانەوە داندراوە

The original idea is to protect copyrighted materials,

بیرۆکە سەرەکیەکە ئەوەیە کە پارێزگاری بکرێت ،لە ئەو بەرهەمانەی مافی لەبەرگرتنەوەیان هەیە

but it would endanger many other things we do on the internet:

بەڵام ،زۆر شتی تر دەکاتە ژێر مەترسی کە لە ئینتەرنێت دەیکەین

blogging, criticizing, discussing, linking and sharing.

بڵۆگ کردن، ڕەخنەگرتن، گفتوگۆکردن و لینک بڵاوکردنەوەی بابەت

Google and YouTube already have similar systems

گوگڵ و یوتوب ئێستە هەمان سیستەمیان هەیە

and they are receiving 100,000 takedown requests every hour.

لە یەک کاتژمێردا ١٠٠،٠٠٠ داواکاری .لابردنیان هەیە

Of course, they can't process this amount of data by hand,

بە دڵنیاییەوە، ناتوانن ئەم هەموو داتایە ،ڕێکبخەن و پرۆسەی بکەن

so they are using machine learning

بەڵكو زیرەکی دروستکراو بەکار دەهێنن

to decide if it's really a copyright violation or not.

بۆ ئەوەی بڕیار بدەن کە .ئەمە ماف شکاندنە یان نا

But these filters do make mistakes.

.بەڵام ئەم فلتەرانە بێ هەڵە نین

They're removing everything from documentation of human rights abuses,

هەموو شتێک لادەبەن ،لە نوسراوی مافەکانی مرۆڤ

lectures about copyrights

وانەکانی دەرباری مافی لەبەرگرتنەوە و

and search results

دەرئەنجامی ئەو بەدواگەڕانانەی

that point to criticism of this new Article 13.

.کە ئاماژە بە ڕەخنەگرتن لە ماددی ١٣ دەدات

Beside of that, they are also removing many other things.

،لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا .چەندین شتی تر لادەبەن

And sometimes, these filters aren't just removing the specific content,

هەندێک ئەم فلتەرانە، تەنها بابەتی ،دیاریکراو لانابەن

but it could also lead to loss of your linked accounts:

تەنانەت دەتوانن ببنە هۆکاری لەدەستدانی :هەژمارە بەیەکەوە بەستراوەکانت

your email address, your documents, your photos,

،یان ئیمەیڵەکەت وێنەو نوسراوەکانت

or your unfinished book,

،یان کتێبە تەواو نەکراوەکەت

which happened with the writer Dennis Cooper.

کە ئەمە لەگەڵ .دێنیس کوپەردا ڕویدا

It's not hard to see how a system like this could be abused

زەحمەت نییە کە ببینیت چۆن ئەم سیستەمە بەخراپی بەکاردێت

by politicians and corporate competitors.

.لەلایەن سیاسەتمەدار و خاوەن کۆمپانیاکان

This Article 13, the extension of these automated filters to the whole internet,

ماددەی ١٣ش، درێژکراوەی ئەم فلتەرە ،ئۆتۆماتیکیانەیە بۆ هەموو ئینتەرنێت

got strong opposition

کە چەندین دژایەتی زۆری بەرکەوتووە

from Wikipedia, Github, Mozilla, and many others,

لە ویکیپیدیا و گێت هەب و مۆزێلا ،و چەندینی تر

including the original founders of the internet and the World Wide Web,

لە دامەزرێنەرانی ئینتەرنێت و تۆڕی جیهانی

Vint Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee.

But despite this strong opposition,

،سەرەڕای ئەم هەموو دژایەتیە قورسە

on the last European Parliament vote,

،لە کۆتا دەنگدانی پەرلامانی ئەوروپا

two thirds of the representatives supported this law.

دوو لەسەر سێی نوێنەرەکان لەگەڵ .ئەم یاسایەدا بوون

The final vote will be early 2019.

The result is important,

but whatever happens,

I'm pretty sure it will be followed by many other similar proposals

من دڵنیام چەندین داواکاری هاوشێوە دروست دەبێت

around the world.

These kinds of regulations would be very hard to enforce

ئەم جۆرە یاسایانە وا دەکەن کە زۆر قورس بێت

through a decentralized web,

،ئینتەرنێت بێ سەنتەر بێت

as there is no hosting companies.

.کە هیچ کۆمپانیایەکی هۆست نەبێت

The websites are served by the visitors themselves.

بەڵکو وێبسایتەکە خزمەت دەکرێت لەلایەن .سەردانکەران خۆیانەوە

I started to build this network three years ago.

سێ ساڵ لەمەوبەر، دەستمکرد .بەکارکردن لەسەر ئەم تۆڕە

Since then, I've spent thousands, tens of thousands of hours

لەو کاتەوە، هەزاران و دەیان هەزار کاتژمێرم بەسەربردووە

on the development.

Why?

بۆ؟

Why would anyone spend thousands of hours on something anyone can freely copy,

بۆ کەسێک ئەو هەموو کاتە بەفیڕۆ بدات ،لە شتێک کە بتوانیت بە ئاسانی کۆپی بکەیت

rename, or even sell?

ناوی بنێتەوە تەنانەت بیفرۆشیت؟

Well, in my case,

،لە ڕاستیدا

one of the reasons was to do something meaningful.

یەکێک لە هۆکارەکان ئەوە بوو .شتێک بکەم مانای هەبێت

During my daily regular job as a web developer,

،لە کاری ڕۆژانەم وەک پەرەپێدەری وێب

I didn't have the feeling that I'm working on something

هەستم نەدەکرد کە کارێک دەکەم

that had a chance to be a bigger than me.

.بۆ ئەوەی ببێت بە شتێک لە خۆم گەورەتر

Simply, I just wanted to make my short presence in this world

زۆر بە سادەیی، دەمویست ئەو ،ژیانە کورتەی لە جیهانا هەمە

to be meaningful.

.بیکەم بە شتێکی بە مانا

Last year, the Great Firewall of China started blocking this network I created.

ساڵی پار، فایەرواڵی گەورەی چین .دەستی کرد بە بلۆک کردنی نێتوۆرکەکەم

This move officially made me the enemy

ئەمەش بە فەرمی کردمی بە دوژمنی

of the government-supported internet censorship.

حوکمەتێک کە لایەنگری .ئینتەرنێت سنوردارکردنە

Since then, it's been really a game of cat and mouse.

لەو کاتەشەوە، هەتا ئێستا .لە یاری مشک و پشیلە دەچێت

They make new rules in the firewall

کاتێک ئەوان یاسای فایەرواڵی نوێ دروست دەکەن

and I try to react to it as fast as I can

منیش دەبێت بە خێراترین کات کاردانەوەم هەبێت

so the users can keep hosting content and create websites

بۆ ئەوەی بەکارهێنەران لە هۆستینی بەرهەمەکان بەردەوام بن و وێبسایت دروست بکەن

that otherwise would be censored by the centralized Chinese internet.

کە بە بێ ئەوە لەلایەن ئینتەنێتی چینەوە .سنوردار دەکرێت و لادەبرێت

My other motivation to create this network was worry.

پاڵنەرەکەی ترم لە دروستکردنی .ئەم نێتوۆرکە ئەوەیە کە خەممە

I fear that the future of our internet is out of our control.

خەمی داهاتوی ئینتەرنێتمە .لەدەست دەرچێت

The increasing centralization and the proposed laws

زیادبونی ناوەندی بوونی یاساکان

are threatening our freedom of speech

هەڕەشەی ئازادی ڕادەربڕینمان دەکەن

and, by that, our democracy.

So for me, building a decentralized web

بۆ من دروستکردنی تۆڕێک بە بێ سەنتەر

means creating a safe harbor,

مانای ئەوەیە کە کەنارێکی ،سەلامەت دروست بووە

a space where the rules are not written by big corporations and political parties,

شوێنێک کە یاساکان تێدا لەلایەن کۆمپانیا ،زلهێزەکان و لایەنە حیزبیەکان نەنوسراوە

but by the people.
