Words matter.

دەکرێت کووشندە بێت..

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا، سنوورێکیان هەیە.

They can heal

ئەوکاتەی لە پۆلی هەشت بووم،

and they can kill ...

yet, they have a limit.

مامۆستاکەم پەڕەیەکی وشەکانی یامێ و

When I was in eighth grade,

وشەی "جینۆساید"ی لەسەربوو.

my teacher gave me a vocabulary sheet

ڕقم لێی بوو.

with the word "genocide."

وشەی جینۆساید شیتاڵکارییە ..

I hated it.

قڕتێکەرە...

The word genocide is clinical ...

بێهەستانەیە ...

ناشارستانییە.

overgeneral ...

هیچ وشەیەک

bloodless ...

ناتوانێت وەسفی ئەوە بکات

dehumanizing.

کە ئەمە چی لە نەتەوەیەک ئەکات.

No word

پێویستە بزانن،

can describe

لەم جۆرە جەنگانەدا،

what this does to a nation.

مێردەکان ژنەکانیان دەکوژن،

You need to know,

ژنەکان مێردەکانیان دەکوژن،

in this kind of war,

دراوسێکان و هاوڕێکان یەکتر دەکوژن.

husbands kills wives,

wives kill husbands,

کەسێک

neighbors and friends kill each other.

لە دەسەڵاتدا

دەڵێت،

"ئەوانەی ئەوێ...

Someone

سەر بێرە نین.

in power

ئەوانە مرۆڤ نین."

says,

خەڵکیش باوەڕیان پێئەکەن.

"Those over there ...

they don't belong.

وشەم ناوێت بۆ

They're not human."

وەسفکردنی ئەم جۆرە ڕەفتارە.

And people believe it.

وشەم ئەوێت بۆ وەستاندنی.

I don't want words

to describe this kind of behavior.

بەڵام وشەکان لەکوێن بۆ وەستاندنی ئەمە؟

I want words to stop it.

ئەی چۆن وشەکان بدۆزینەوە؟

But where are the words to stop this?

بەڵام باوەڕم وایە بەڕاستی، پێویستە بەردەوامبین لە هەوڵدان.

And how do we find the words?

من لە کیگالی، لە ڕواندا لەدایک بووم.

But I believe, truly, we have to keep trying.

هەستم کرد هەموو خێزانەکەم و

I was born in Kigali, Rwanda.

هەموو دراوسێکانیشم خۆشیان ئەوێم.

بەردەوام هەمووان گاڵتەیان پێئەکردم،

I felt loved by my entire family

بەتایبەتی خوشک و برا گەورەکەم.

and my neighbors.

کە دانی پێشەوەم کەوت،

I was constantly being teased by everybody,

براکەم سەیری کردم و وتی،

especially my two older siblings.

"ئەوە بەسەر تۆش هات؟

When I lost my front tooth,

قەت ناڕوێتەوە."

(پێکەنین)

my brother looked at me and said,

حەزم لە یاریکردن بوو لە هەموو شوێنێک،

"Oh, it has happened to you, too?

بەتایبەتی باخەکەی دایکم و باخەکەی دراوسێمان.

It will never grow back."

(Laughter)

حەزم لە دایەنگاکەم بوو.

I enjoyed playing everywhere,

گۆرانیمان ئەوت،

especially my mother's garden and my neighbor's.

لە هەموو شوێنێک یاریمان ئەکرد و

نانی نیوەڕۆمان ئەخوارد.

I loved my kindergarten.

منداڵییەکم هەبوو کە

We sang songs,

we played everywhere

هیوادارم هەموو منداڵێک هەیبێت.

and ate lunch.

I had a childhood

بەڵام کە بووم بە شەش ساڵ،

that I would wish for anyone.

گەورەکانی خێزانەکەم دەستیانکرد بە چپەکردن و

But when I was six,

هەرجارێک پرسیارێکم ئەکرد شووشیان لێئەکردم.

the adults in my family began to speak in whispers

شەوێکیان،

دایکم و باوکم هاتن.

and shushed me any time that I asked a question.

ڕوانینێکی سەیریان هەبوو کاتێک هەڵیانساندین.

One night,

من و کلێری خوشکمیان نارد بۆ ماڵی باپیرم، و

my mom and dad came.

They had this strange look when they woke us.

هیواداربوون ئەوەی ڕووئەیات زوو کۆتایی بێت.

They sent my older sister Claire and I to our grandparent's,

زۆری پێنەچوو ناچاربووین لەوێش ڕابکەین.

hoping whatever was happening would blow away.

خۆمان شاردەوە،

بە گاگۆڵکێ ئەڕۆشتین،

هەندێک جاریش ڕامان ئەکرد.

Soon we had to escape from there, too.

We hid,

we crawled,

هەندێک جار گوێم لە پێکەنین ئەبوو و

we sometimes ran.

ئینجا قیژاندن و گریان و

Sometimes I heard laughter

ئینجا دەنگێک کە پێشتر قەت گوێم لێنەبووبوو.

and then screaming and crying

ئەزانن،

من نەمئەزانی

and then noise that I had never heard.

ئەو دەنگانە چین.

You see,

نە دەنگی مرۆڤ بوون -- و

I did not know

لە هەمان کاتیشدا، لە هیچ دەنگی مرۆڤ ئەچوون.

what those noises were.

ئەو کەسانەم ئەبینی کە هەناسەیان نەئەیا.

They were neither human --

and also at the same time, they were human.

وامئەزانی کە نوستوون.

I saw people who were not breathing.

هێشتا تێنەگەشتبووم لەوەی کە مردن چییە،

I thought they were asleep.

یان کوشتن خۆی چییە.

I still didn't understand what death was,

کە کەمێک ئەوەستاین بۆ ئەوەی پشوو بەین

یان بۆ خواردن بگەڕێین،

or killing in itself.

چاوەکانم دائەخست،

بە هیوای ئەوەی کاتێک ئەیانکەمەوە،

When we would stop to rest for a little bit

بە خەبەر یەمەوە.

or search for food,

I would close my eyes,

نەمئەزانی کام ئاراستەیە بەرەو ماڵەوەم ئەبات.

hoping when I opened them,

I would be awake.

ڕۆژ بۆ خۆشاردنەوە بوو و

I had no idea which direction was home.

شەویش بۆ ڕۆشتن.

Days were for hiding

لە کەسێکەوە کە دوورە لە ماڵەوە ئەڕۆشتیت

and night for walking.

بۆ کەسێک کە ماڵی نییە.

You go from a person who's away from home

ئەو شوێنەی کە ئەبوو وەرتگرن

دەریانکردویت، و

to a person with no home.

کەس وەرت ناگرێت.

The place that is supposed to want you

has pushed you out,

کەسێکی نەویستراویت

لەلایەن هەمووانەو.

and no one takes you in.

You are unwanted

تۆ پەنابەرێکیت.

by anyone.

لە شەش ساڵی بۆ ١٢ ساڵییەوە،

You are a refugee.

لە حەوت وڵاتی جیاواز ژیاوم،

لە کەمپێکی پەنابەرانەوە ئەڕۆشتم بۆ دانەیەکی تر،

From age six to 12,

I lived in seven different countries,

بەهیوای ئەوەی شوێنێک ئێمەیان بوێت.

moving from one refugee camp to another,

کلێری خوشکە گەورەم،

hoping we would be wanted.

وەک دایکێکی لێهات بۆم .. و

هەروەها شارەزا لە بەجێگەیاندنی شتەکاندا.

My older sister Claire,

she became a young mother ...

کە بووم بە ١٢ ساڵ،

بە پێگەی پەنابەر لەگەڵ کلێر و خێزانەکەی هاتم بۆ ئەمریکا. و

and a master at getting things done.

When I was 12,

I came to America with Claire and her family on refugee status.

ئەوە تەنیا دەستپێک بوو،

چونکە هەرچەندە ١٢ ساڵ بووم،

هەندێک جار هەستم ئەکرد سێ ساڵ بم و

And that's only the beginning,

هەندێک جاریش ٥٠ ساڵ.

because even though I was 12 years old,

ڕابردووم دوورئەکەوتەوە،

تێکەڵوپێکەڵ بوو،

sometimes I felt like three years old

شێوا.

and sometimes 50 years old.

هەموو شتێک زۆر و

My past receded,

لە هەمان کاتیشدا هیچبوو.

grew jumbled,

distorted.

کات وەک لاپەڕە لێکراوەکانی کتێبێکی لێهات و

Everything was too much

and nothing.

بەملاولادا پەرشوبڵاو کرابوو.

Time seemed like pages torn out of a book

ئەمە ئێستاش کە لێرە وەستاوم هەر بەسەرم هات.

and scattered everywhere.

This still happens to me standing right here.

دوای هاتنم بۆ ئەمریکا،

من و کلێر باسی ڕابردووی خۆمانمان نەئەکرد.

After I got to America,

ساڵی ٢٠٠٦،

Claire and I did not talk about our past.

دوای ١٢ ساڵ

لە دابڕان لە خێزانەکەم، و

ئینجا حەوت ساڵ لەوەی وا بیرمان ئەکردەوە مردبێتن و

In 2006,

after 12 years

ئەوانیش وا بیریان ئەکردەوە مردبێتین،

بەیەک گەشتینەوە ...

being separated away from my family,

and then seven years knowing that they were dead

and them thinking that we were dead,

we reunited ...

in the most dramatic, American way possible.

I told you, I told you.

(Laughter)

کاتێک کاتم بەسەر ئەبرد لەگەڵ دایکم و

But after the show,

باوکم و خوشکە بچووکەکەم و

as I spent time with my mom and dad

دوو خووشک و برا تازەکەم کە تا ئەوکاتە نەمبینیبوون،

هەستم بەتوڕەیی کرد.

and my little sister

and my two new siblings that I never met,

هەستم بە ئازارێکی قوڵ کرد لە ناخمدا. و

I felt anger.

ئەشمزانی کە هیچ شتێک نییە،

I felt every deep pain in me.

هیچ شتێک،

کە بتوانێت ئەوکاتە بگێڕێتەوە کە دەمانتوانی پێکەوە بەسەری بەرین و

And I know that there is absolutely nothing,

nothing,

that could restore the time we lost with each other

زۆری پێنەچوو، دایک و باوکم ماڵیان هێنا بۆ ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان،

and the relationship we could've had.

بەڵام وەک کلێر،

باسی ڕابردوو ناکەن.

Soon, my parents moved to the United States,

بەردەوام لەو ساتەی خۆیاندا دەژین.

but like Claire,

they don't talk about our past.

پرسیاری زۆر ناکەن،

ڕێگە بەخۆیان نایەن هەست بکەن --

They live in never-ending present.

بە هەنگاوی بچووک ئەڕۆن.

Not asking too many questions,

not allowing themselves to feel --

کەسیش لە ئێمە بێگومان، ناتوانین تێبگەین لەوەی بەسەرمان هات.

moving in small steps.

None of us, of course, can make sense of what happened to us.

هەرچەندە خێزانەکەم زیندوون --

بەڵێ، ئێمە تێکشکاوین، و

بەڵێ، ئێمە تاساوین، و

Though my family is alive --

بە ئەزموونەکەی خۆمان لە قسە کەوتین.

yes, we were broken,

and yes, we are numb

تەنیا خێزانەکەی ئێمە نییە.

and we were silenced by our own experience.

ڕواندا تەنیا وڵات نییە

It's not just my family.

کە خەڵکەکەی دژی یەکتر وەستابێتنەوە و

یەکتریان کوشتبێت.

Rwanda is not the only country

هەموو مرۆڤایەتی،

where people have turned on each other

لە چەندین ڕووەوە،

and murdered each other.

وەک خێزانەکەی من وایە.

The entire human race,

نەمردوون؛

in many ways,

بەڵێ، شکاون تاساون، و بێدەنگبوون بە توندوتیژییەکانی جیهان

is like my family.

Not dead;

کە زاڵبووە بەسەرماندا.

yes, broken, numb and silenced by the violence of the world

ئەزانن چۆنە،

تێکدانەکەی توندوتیژی بەردەوامە

that has taken over.

لە ناو وشەکانی بەکاری ئەهێنین و

You see,

the chaos of the violence continues inside

چیرۆکەکانی ڕۆژانە درووستی ئەکەین.

in the words we use

بەڵام ئەو ناوانەش کە لەخۆمان و

and the stories we create every single day.

لە ئەوانیشی ئەنێین.

But also on the labels that we impose on ourselves

هەر بە کەسێک ئەڵێین "کەسی تر،"

and each other.

"کەمتر لە،"

"یەکێک لەوان"

یان "باشتر لەوان،"

Once we call someone "other,"

باوەڕم پێبکەن...

"less than,"

"one of them"

لەژێر هەلومەرجە ڕاستەکەدا،

or "better than,"

believe me ...

ڕێگایەکی کورتکراوەیە بۆ وێرانکردنی زیاتر.

under the right condition,

کێشە نانەوەی زیاتر و

ژاوەژاوی زیاتر

it's a short path to more destruction.

کە لێی تێناگەین.

قسە قەت بەس نابێت

More chaos

and more noise

that we will not understand.

بۆ زانینی ڕێژە و جۆری

Words will never be enough

وێرانکارییەکەی مرۆڤ ناوێتییەوە.

to quantify and qualify the many magnitudes

بۆ ئەوەی ئێمە

of human-caused destruction.

ئەو توندوتیژییە بوەستێنین کە لە جیهاندا ڕووئەیات،

In order for us

هیوادارم --

هیچ نەبێت لێتان ئەپاڕێمەوە --

to stop the violence that goes on in the world,

کەمێک بووەستن.

با لەخۆمان بپرسین:

I hope --

at least I beg you --

ئێمە بێ قسە چین؟

to pause.

Let's ask ourselves:

ئێمە بێ پێناس چین؟

Who are we without words?

ئێمە لە هەناسەدانی خۆماندا چین؟

Who are we without labels?

لە لێدانی دڵی خۆماندا چین؟

Who are we in our breath?
