Words matter.

I hated it.

overgeneral ...

殺される個人を無視した

bloodless ...

血も涙もない

dehumanizing.

非人道的な言葉です

No word

どんな言葉でも

can describe

それがどう国に影響するのか

what this does to a nation.

表現することはできません

You need to know,

知っておいてほしいことは

in this kind of war,

このような戦争では

husbands kills wives,

夫が妻を殺し

wives kill husbands,

妻が夫を殺し

neighbors and friends kill each other.

近所の人や友人が互いを殺し合うのです

Someone

ある権力者は

in power

ある権力者は

says,

こう言います

"Those over there ...

「そこにいるのは

they don't belong.

よそ者だ

They're not human."

人間ではない」と

And people believe it.

周りの人はそれを信じるのです

I don't want words

このような行為を表す言葉は

to describe this kind of behavior.

いりません

I want words to stop it.

それを止める言葉がほしいのです

But where are the words to stop this?

しかしその言葉はどこにあるでしょうか

And how do we find the words?

どうしたら見つけられるでしょうか

But I believe, truly, we have to keep trying.

私が信じているのは 探し続けなければならないということです

I was born in Kigali, Rwanda.

私はルワンダのキガリで生まれました

I felt loved by my entire family

家族や近所の人からの

and my neighbors.

愛情を感じていました

I was constantly being teased by everybody,

私はいつも誰かに 特に兄弟には

especially my two older siblings.

からかわれていました

When I lost my front tooth,

前歯が抜けたとき

my brother looked at me and said,

兄は私を見てこう言いました

"Oh, it has happened to you, too?

「お前のも抜けたのか

It will never grow back."

もう生えてこないぞ」と

(Laughter)

I enjoyed playing everywhere,

私は遊ぶのが大好きで

especially my mother's garden and my neighbor's.

特に母や近所の庭がお気に入りでした

I loved my kindergarten.

幼稚園も大好きでした

We sang songs,

歌を歌い

we played everywhere

たくさん遊び

and ate lunch.

ランチを食べました

I had a childhood

私は誰もにそう過ごしてほしい

that I would wish for anyone.

そういう幼少期を過ごしました

But when I was six,

しかし私が６歳のとき

the adults in my family began to speak in whispers

家族の大人たちが　 ひそひそと話すようになりました

and shushed me any time that I asked a question.

何か尋ねても 答えてくれませんでした

One night,

ある夜

my mom and dad came.

母と父がやって来ました

They had this strange look when they woke us.

私たちを起こしたとき 二人の様子が変でした

They sent my older sister Claire and I to our grandparent's,

姉のクレアと私は祖父母の元へ送られ

hoping whatever was happening would blow away.

両親は 今起きていることが なくなればと願っていました

Soon we had to escape from there, too.

すぐに 祖父母の元からも 逃れねばならなくなりました

We hid,

私たちは 隠れ

we crawled,

這って

we sometimes ran.

時には走りました

Sometimes I heard laughter

笑い声が聞こえたり

and then screaming and crying

叫び声や泣き声

and then noise that I had never heard.

聞いたことのない音がすることもありました

You see,

お分かりのように

I did not know

私はその音が何なのか

what those noises were.

知りませんでした

They were neither human --

人間ではないような

and also at the same time, they were human.

しかし人間のような気もするのです

I saw people who were not breathing.

息をしていない人を見ました

I thought they were asleep.

私は眠っているのかと思いました

I still didn't understand what death was,

死が何なのか

or killing in itself.

殺すとは何かを知りませんでした

When we would stop to rest for a little bit

休憩や

or search for food,

食べ物を探すために 立ち止まると

I would close my eyes,

私は目を閉じ

hoping when I opened them,

目を開けるときには

I would be awake.

悪夢から覚めたいと思いました

I had no idea which direction was home.

家がどの方向にあるのかも分からず

Days were for hiding

日中は隠れ

and night for walking.

夜は歩く日々でした

You go from a person who's away from home

家から離れた人の所から

to a person with no home.

家のない人の元へ行くのです

The place that is supposed to want you

自分を受け入れてくれるはずの場所から

has pushed you out,

追い出され

and no one takes you in.

誰も受け入れてくれないのです

You are unwanted

誰からも

by anyone.

必要とされません

You are a refugee.

それが難民です

From age six to 12,

６歳から12歳まで

I lived in seven different countries,

７つの国の

moving from one refugee camp to another,

難民キャンプを転々とし

hoping we would be wanted.

誰かに必要とされることを 望んでいました

My older sister Claire,

姉のクレアは

she became a young mother ...

若くして母親になり

and a master at getting things done.

家事上手になりました

When I was 12,

12歳のとき

I came to America with Claire and her family on refugee status.

私はクレアとその家族と 難民としてアメリカにやって来ました

And that's only the beginning,

これは始まりにすぎませんでした

because even though I was 12 years old,

私は12歳にして

sometimes I felt like three years old

３歳のように感じるときもあれば

and sometimes 50 years old.

My past receded,

grew jumbled,

distorted.

Everything was too much

and nothing.

Time seemed like pages torn out of a book

and scattered everywhere.

This still happens to me standing right here.

After I got to America,

私がアメリカに来たあと

Claire and I did not talk about our past.

クレアと私は過去について 話さなくなりました

In 2006,

2006年

after 12 years

家族と離れてから

being separated away from my family,

12年後

and then seven years knowing that they were dead

家族が死んだと知ってから

and them thinking that we were dead,

そして家族に死んだと思われてから ７年後に

we reunited ...

再会しました

in the most dramatic, American way possible.

それは とてもアメリカらしい ドラマチックな再会でした

on television --

I told you, I told you.

But after the show,

as I spent time with my mom and dad

and my little sister

and my two new siblings that I never met,

I felt anger.

I felt every deep pain in me.

深い苦悩がありました

And I know that there is absolutely nothing,

私は知っていました

nothing,

何を以てしても

that could restore the time we lost with each other

and the relationship we could've had.

Soon, my parents moved to the United States,

but like Claire,

they don't talk about our past.

They live in never-ending present.

Not asking too many questions,

多くを聞かず

not allowing themselves to feel --

moving in small steps.

None of us, of course, can make sense of what happened to us.

私たちは誰も自分の身に何が起きたか 説明できませんでした

Though my family is alive --

私の家族は生きていますが

yes, we were broken,

心は壊れてしまいました

and yes, we are numb

麻痺し

and we were silenced by our own experience.

It's not just my family.

これは私の家族だけの話ではありません

Rwanda is not the only country

ルワンダだけが

where people have turned on each other

互いを裏切り

and murdered each other.

殺し合いをした国ではありません

The entire human race,

全人類は

in many ways,

いろいろな意味で

is like my family.

私の家族のようなものです

Not dead;

死んではいませんが

yes, broken, numb and silenced by the violence of the world

支配する 世界の暴力により

that has taken over.

壊れ、麻痺し、黙らされてしまうのです

You see,

つまり

the chaos of the violence continues inside

暴力による混沌は

in the words we use

私たちが使う言葉や

and the stories we create every single day.

日々作り出される物語の中で 続いているのです

But also on the labels that we impose on ourselves

また自分たちや 他の人に貼っているレッテルにも

and each other.

続いています

Once we call someone "other,"

誰かを「他人」

"less than,"

「それ以下の」

"one of them"

「その内の一人」

or "better than,"

「より優れている」と言うとき

believe me ...

信じてください

under the right condition,

ある状況の中では

it's a short path to more destruction.

破壊への近道になります

More chaos

私たちの知らない 混沌

and more noise

雑音が

that we will not understand.

あるのです

Words will never be enough

言葉では決して十分に

to quantify and qualify the many magnitudes

人間が起こした破壊の質と大きさを

of human-caused destruction.

はかることはできません

In order for us

そのため 私たちが

to stop the violence that goes on in the world,

世界で続いている 暴力を止めるために

I hope --

私は望み

at least I beg you --

そして懇願します

to pause.

立ち止まってみてください

Who are we without words?

言葉がなかったら

Who are we without labels?

レッテルがなかったら

Who are we in our breath?

呼吸をする 私たちは何者なのか

Who are we in our heartbeat?
