Words matter.

When I was in eighth grade,

my teacher gave me a vocabulary sheet

with the word "genocide."

"대량학살"이라는 단어가 있는 거였습니다.

I hated it.

저는 그것이 싫었습니다.

The word genocide is clinical ...

대량 학살이란 단어는 임상적이고

overgeneral ...

지나치게 일반화 되어 있고

bloodless ...

피도 눈물도 없는

dehumanizing.

비인간적인 단어입니다.

No word

그 같은 단어가 한 나라에

can describe

어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지

what this does to a nation.

설명할 수 있는 단어는 존재하지 않습니다.

You need to know,

여러분은 아셔야 합니다.

in this kind of war,

전쟁이라는 상황에서

husbands kills wives,

남편은 아내를 죽이고,

wives kill husbands,

아내는 남편을 죽이고

neighbors and friends kill each other.

이웃과 친구들이 서로를 죽인다는 점을요.

Someone

권력을 가진

in power

이들이

says,

말하기를

"Those over there ...

“저기 있는 사람들은

they don't belong.

그들은 우리 편 아냐.

They're not human."

인간이 아니다" 라고 말합니다

And people believe it.

그리고 사람들을 그렇게 믿죠.

I don't want words

저는 그와 같은 행동들을

to describe this kind of behavior.

단어로 표현하는 것을 원하지 않습니다.

I want words to stop it.

저는 그것을 멈출 수 있는 단어를 원하죠.

But where are the words to stop this?

하지만 이것을 멈출 수 있는 단어는 어디에 있을까요?

And how do we find the words?

그리고 우리는 그 언어를 어떻게 찾을 수 있을까요?

But I believe, truly, we have to keep trying.

저는 진심으로 우리가 계속해서 노력해야 한다고 믿습니다.

I was born in Kigali, Rwanda.

저는 르완다의 키칼리에서 태어났습니다.

I felt loved by my entire family

저는 가족들에게 사랑받고 있다고 느꼈어요.

and my neighbors.

그리고 이웃들에게도요.

I was constantly being teased by everybody,

저는 끊임없이 모두로부터 놀림받고 있었어요.

especially my two older siblings.

특히 제 두 형제로부터요.

When I lost my front tooth,

제가 앞니를 잃었을 때

my brother looked at me and said,

제 형제가 와서 말하길

"Oh, it has happened to you, too?

“ 오, 너도 그렇게 된 거야?

It will never grow back."

그 이는 다시 자라지 않을 거야" 라고 말하곤 했죠.

I enjoyed playing everywhere,

저는 어느 곳에서나 놀기를 좋아했어요.

especially my mother's garden and my neighbor's.

특히 어머니와 제 이웃의 정원에서 노는 것을 좋아했습니다.

I loved my kindergarten.

유치원도 좋아했습니다.

We sang songs,

우리는 노래를 부르고

we played everywhere

아무곳에서나 놀고

and ate lunch.

점심을 먹곤 했습니다.

I had a childhood

저는 누구나가 바라는

that I would wish for anyone.

어린 시절을 보냈습니다.

But when I was six,

하지만 제가 여섯살이었을 무렵

the adults in my family began to speak in whispers

저희 가족 중 어른들은 작은 소리로 말하기 시작했고

and shushed me any time that I asked a question.

제가 질문을 할 때마다 조용히 하라고 했습니다.

One night,

어느날 밤

my mom and dad came.

엄마와 아빠가 다가오셨습니다.

They had this strange look when they woke us.

저희를 깨우며 이상한 표정을 짓고 계셨습니다.

They sent my older sister Claire and I to our grandparent's,

부모님은 저와 언니 클레어를 조부모님댁으로 보내며

hoping whatever was happening would blow away.

어떤 일이든 그처 스쳐지나가기를 바라셨습니다.

Soon we had to escape from there, too.

곧이어 저희는 그곳에서도 탈출해야 했습니다.

We hid,

우리는 숨었고,

we crawled,

기어 다녔으며,

we sometimes ran.

때로는 도망쳐 달렸습니다.

Sometimes I heard laughter

때로는 웃음이

and then screaming and crying

이어서 비명이, 그리고 울음이 들려왔습니다.

and then noise that I had never heard.

제가 살며 한번도 듣지 못했던 그런 소리였죠.

You see,

아시다시피

I did not know

저는 그 소리들이

what those noises were.

무엇인지 알지 못했습니다.

They were neither human --

그것은 인간의 것이 아니었지만

and also at the same time, they were human.

동시에 인간의 것이기도 했어요.

I saw people who were not breathing.

숨을 쉬지 않은 사람들을 보기도 했습니다.

I thought they were asleep.

저는 그들이 잠을 자고 있다고 생각했죠.

I still didn't understand what death was,

저는 여전히 죽음이 무엇인지

or killing in itself.

또 살인 그 자체를 이해하지 못했습니다.

When we would stop to rest for a little bit

우리는 잠시 쉬거나 음식을 찾기 위해

or search for food,

멈춰있을 때면

I would close my eyes,

저는 눈을 감았고

hoping when I opened them,

다시 눈을 떴을 때

I would be awake.

잠에서 깨어나 있기를 바랬습니다.

I had no idea which direction was home.

저는 어느 방향이 집으로 가는 쪽인지 몰랐습니다.

Days were for hiding

낮은 숨기 위한 시간이었고

and night for walking.

밤은 걷기 위한 시간이었죠.

You go from a person who's away from home

집을 떠난 사람에서

to a person with no home.

집이 없는 사람이 되었습니다.

The place that is supposed to want you

원해야 할 곳에서는

has pushed you out,

저를 밀어내 내쫓았고

and no one takes you in.

아무도 저를 데리고 가려가지 않았습니다.

You are unwanted

저는 누구에게도

by anyone.

환영받지 못했습니다.

You are a refugee.

저는 난민이었습니다

From age six to 12,

6살때 부터 12살 때까지

I lived in seven different countries,

저는 7개의 다른 나라에서 살았습니다.

moving from one refugee camp to another,

난민 캠프에서 또 다른 난민 캠프로 옮겨 다니며

hoping we would be wanted.

어느 곳에서는 환영받길 원하면서 말이죠.

My older sister Claire,

그간 저의 언니 클레어는

she became a young mother ...

어린 엄마가 되었습니다.

and a master at getting things done.

그리고 어떤 일이든 해결하는데 달인이 되었죠.

When I was 12,

제가 12살이 되었을 때

I came to America with Claire and her family on refugee status.

저는 클레어와 함꼐 미국에 왔는데 클레어 가족이 난민 자격이었습니다.

And that's only the beginning,

그것은 시작에 불과했습니다.

because even though I was 12 years old,

왜냐하면 제가 12살임에도 불구하고

sometimes I felt like three years old

때때로 저는 3살이 된 것처럼 느껴졌고,

and sometimes 50 years old.

때로는 50살이 된 것처럼 느껴졌기 때문입니다.

My past receded,

저의 과거는 멀어져 갔고

grew jumbled,

distorted.

Everything was too much

Time seemed like pages torn out of a book

and scattered everywhere.

This still happens to me standing right here.

바로 지금 여기 서 있는 지금도 여전히 그런 일이 일어납니다.

After I got to America,

미국으로 온 후

Claire and I did not talk about our past.

클레어와 저는 과거에 대해 말하지 않았습니다.

In 2006,

2006년

after 12 years

가족과 떨어진 지

being separated away from my family,

12년이 되는 그 해

and then seven years knowing that they were dead

그리고 가족들이 죽었다고 생각하고, 가족들은 저희가 죽었다고 생각한 지

and them thinking that we were dead,

7년이 되었던 그 때

we reunited ...

우리는 다시 만났습니다.

in the most dramatic, American way possible.

I told you, I told you.

But after the show,

as I spent time with my mom and dad

엄마와 아빠

and my little sister

여동생

and my two new siblings that I never met,

그리고 한번도 만나보지 못했던 두 명의 새로운 형제와 함께 시간을 보내며

I felt anger.

저는 화가 났습니다.

I felt every deep pain in me.

And I know that there is absolutely nothing,

nothing,

that could restore the time we lost with each other

and the relationship we could've had.

그 어떤 것도 없음을요.

Soon, my parents moved to the United States,

얼마지나지 않아 저희 부모님도 미국으로 오셨지만

but like Claire,

클레어와 마찬가지로

they don't talk about our past.

과거에 대해서 이야기 하지 않았습니다.

They live in never-ending present.

끝이 없는 현재에 살고 계시죠.

Not asking too many questions,

너무 많은 질문들은 하지 않고,

not allowing themselves to feel --

스스로가 느끼지 못하게 하며

moving in small steps.

작은 발걸음으로 움직이고 계시죠.

None of us, of course, can make sense of what happened to us.

물론, 저희 가족 중 그 누구도 우리에게 무슨일이 일어났는지 이해하지 못했습니다.

Though my family is alive --

저희 가족은 비록 살아남았지만

yes, we were broken,

네, 저희는 상처를 입었고

and yes, we are numb

네, 저희는 무감각해졌습니다.

and we were silenced by our own experience.

그리고 우리의 경험에 대해 침묵을 지켰습니다.

It's not just my family.

저희 가족뿐만 그런 것은 아닙니다.

Rwanda is not the only country

르완다는 서로가

where people have turned on each other

서로를 공격하고, 서로를 죽인

and murdered each other.

유일한 나라가 아닙니다.

The entire human race,

여러 가지 측면에서

in many ways,

인류 전체는

is like my family.

제 가족과 같습니다.

Not dead;

죽지 않았습니다.

yes, broken, numb and silenced by the violence of the world

상처로 망가졌고, 무감각해졌으며 세계를 장악하고 있는 폭력에 대해

that has taken over.

침묵을 지키게 되었죠.

You see,

여러분이 보시다시피,

the chaos of the violence continues inside

우리가 매일 사용하는 언어와

in the words we use

우리가 매일 만들어내는 이야기 안에서

and the stories we create every single day.

폭력의 혼란이 이어지고 있습니다.

But also on the labels that we impose on ourselves

그러나 또한 우리 자신과 서로에게 강요하는

and each other.

꼬리표에도 붙어 이어지고 있죠

Once we call someone "other,"

한 때 우리가 누군가를 '다른'

"less than,"

'모자란'

"one of them"

'그들 중 하나' 라고 부르죠.

or "better than,"

또는 '그 보다 나은' 으로 불렀던 단어들에서요.

believe me ...

저를 믿으세요.

under the right condition,

올바른 방향성 아래에서

it's a short path to more destruction.

더 큰 파괴로 가는 지름길 입니다.

More chaos

더 많은 혼돈과

and more noise

더 많은 소음들을

that we will not understand.

우리는 이해하지 못할 것입니다.

Words will never be enough

언어는 인간이 만들어낸

to quantify and qualify the many magnitudes

파괴의 규모를 수량화하고 측량화하기에

of human-caused destruction.

충분하지 않습니다.

In order for us

세계에서 지속되고 있는

to stop the violence that goes on in the world,

폭력 사태를 막기 위해서

I hope --

저는 희망합니다.

at least I beg you --

또 여러분께 간청드립니다.

to pause.

폭력을 멈출 수 있기를요.

Let's ask ourselves:

우리 스스로에게 물어봅시다.

Who are we without words?

언어가 없는 우리는 누구입니까?

Who are we without labels?

꼬리표가 없는 우리는 누구입니까?

Who are we in our breath?

숨 쉬고 있는 우리는 누구입니까?

Who are we in our heartbeat?

심장이 뛰는 우리는 누구입니까?
