They're discoveries of people

and the way people are, and new leadership.

This is Benki.

.بێنكی رابه‌ری گه‌لی (ئه‌شانینكا)یه‌

Benki is a leader of the Ashaninka Nation.

His people live in Brazil

خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ی له‌ شاری .پیرۆی به‌رازیل ده‌ژین

and in Peru.

بێنكی له‌ گوندێكی زۆر دوور ،له‌ ئه‌مازۆن ده‌ژی

Benki comes from a village

so remote up in the Amazon

that to get there, either you have to fly

،بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی بگه‌یته‌ ئه‌وێ

یان ده‌بێت به‌ فرۆكه‌ بچی و له‌سه‌ر ئاو بنیشیه‌وه‌، یا ده‌بێ

and land on water,

or go by canoe for several days.

I met Benki three years ago in Sao Paulo

سێ سال به‌ر له‌ ئێستا له‌ ساوپاولۆ چاوم به‌ بێنكی كه‌وت

when I'd brought him and other leaders

كاتێ بێنكی و چه‌ند سه‌ركرده‌یه‌كی تری ئه‌و خه‌ڵكه‌ ره‌سه‌نانه‌م بانگهێشت كردبوو

from indigenous peoples

to meet with me and leaders from around the world,

تا له‌گه‌ڵ من و چه‌ند سه‌ركرده‌یه‌كی تر كه‌ له‌ سه‌رتاسه‌ری جیهانه‌وه‌ هاتبوون

because we wanted to learn from each other.

We wanted to share our stories with each other.

كۆببنه‌وه‌، چونكه‌ هه‌موومان ده‌مانویست .شت له‌ یه‌كتریه‌وه‌ فێربین

The Ashaninka people

خه‌ڵكی ئه‌شانینكا له‌ سه‌رتاپای

are known throughout South America

باشوری ئه‌مه‌ریكا به‌ ره‌وشت به‌رزى و چاونه‌ترسی و

for their dignity, their spirit

and their resistance,

،به‌رگه‌كردنیان ناسراون

starting with the Incas

هه‌ر له‌گه‌ڵ په‌یدابوونی ئانكا)ییه‌كانه‌وه‌ ده‌ست پێ ده‌كات)

and continuing through the 19th century

و به‌رده‌وام بوونیان له‌ماوه‌ی سه‌ده‌ی 19 ھەم دا

with the rubber tappers.

Today's biggest threat to the Ashaninka people

and to Benki

،له‌ داربرینی نایاساییه‌وه‌یه‌ دێت

comes from illegal logging --

the people who come into the beautiful forest

ئه‌و خه‌ڵكانه‌ی كه‌ دێنه‌ ئه‌و

and cut down ancient mahogany trees,

جه‌نگه‌ڵه‌ جوانه‌ و داره‌ (ماهۆگانی)ه‌ ،دێرینه‌كان ده‌برنه‌وه‌

float them down the river to world markets.

ده‌یانخه‌نه‌ سه‌ر ئاوه‌وه‌ و به‌ره‌و .بازاره‌كانی جیهان ده‌یان به‌ن

Benki knew this.

.بێنكی دركی به‌وه‌ كرد

He could see what was happening to his forest, to his environment,

ده‌یبینی كه‌ چی به‌سه‌ر دارستانه‌كه‌ی و ،ژینگه‌كه‌ی دێت

because he was taken under his grandfather's wing

چونكه‌ ئه‌و له‌ژێر چاودێری باپیری په‌روه‌رده‌كرابوو

when he was only two years old

كاتێك ته‌مه‌نی ته‌نها دوو ساڵان بوو

to begin to learn about the forest

بو ده‌ست به‌ فێربوون بكات له‌باره‌ی دارستان

and the way of life of his people.

.شێوازی ژیانی خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ی

His grandfather died when he was only 10.

كاتێ كه‌ باپیری مرد ته‌مه‌نی .بێنكی ته‌نها ده‌ ساڵ بوو

And at that young age, 10 years old,

،به‌و ته‌مه‌نه‌ مندالیه‌وه‌ی كه‌ ته‌نها ده‌ ساڵان بوو

Benki became the paje of his community.

بوو به‌ گه‌وره‌ی كۆمه‌ڵگاكه‌ی خۆی .(كه‌ پێیان ده‌گووت (پاژی

Now, in the Ashaninka tradition and culture,

به‌گوێره‌ی نه‌ریت و كه‌لتوری

the paje is the most important

گه‌لی ئه‌شانینكا پاژی گرنگترین كه‌سی كۆمه‌ڵگاكه‌یه‌و

person in the community.

This is the person who contains within him

،ئه‌و كه‌سه‌شه‌ كه‌ هه‌موو زانیاری و ژیری

all the knowledge, all the wisdom

،چه‌ندین سه‌ده‌ی ژیانی خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ی پێیه‌

of centuries and centuries of life,

،نه‌ك ته‌نها ده‌رباره‌ی خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ی به‌ڵكو ده‌رباره‌ی هه‌موو ئه‌و شتانه‌ی

and not just about his people,

but about everything that his people's survival depended on:

كه‌ خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ی بۆ مانه‌وه‌یان :پشتی پێ ده‌به‌ستن، وه‌كو

the trees, the birds,

داره‌كان، باڵنده‌كان، ئاو، خاك و

the water, the soil, the forest.

.هه‌روه‌ها دارستان

So when he was only 10 and he became the paje,

بۆیه‌ هه‌ر له‌ ته‌مه‌نی ده‌ ساڵیه‌وه‌ ،بوو به‌ گه‌وره‌ی خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ی

he began to lead his people.

.ده‌ستی كرد به‌ رابه‌رایه‌تی كردنیان

He began to talk to them

ده‌رباره‌ی ئه‌و دارستانەی كه‌ ،پێویستیانه‌ بیپارێزن قسه‌ی بۆ ده‌كردن

about the forest that they needed to protect,

the way of life they needed to nurture.

ده‌رباره‌ی شێوازى ئه‌و ژیانه‌ى كه‌ پێویستیانه‌ بۆ مانه‌وه‌

He explained to them

بێنكی بۆیانی روونده‌كرده‌وه‌ كه‌

that it was not a question of survival of the fittest;

مه‌سه‌له‌كه‌ ته‌نها مانه‌وه‌ى ،كه‌سه‌ به‌ تواناوبه‌هێزه‌كان نیه‌

it was a question of understanding

به‌ڵكو مه‌سه‌له‌كه‌ تێگه‌یشتنه‌

what they needed to survive

له‌ هه‌موو ئه‌و شتانه‌ى كه‌ پێویستیانه‌

and to protect that.

.بۆ مانه‌وه‌ و پاراستنیشیان

،هه‌شت ساڵ دواتر

Eight years later,

له‌ ته‌مه‌نی هه‌ژده‌ ساڵی كاتێ كه‌ بێنكی ،بووه‌ پیاوێكی پێگه‌یشتوو

when he was a young man of 18,

Benki left the forest for the first time.

،بۆ یه‌كه‌م جار بێنكی دارستانەکە بە جێهێشت

He went 3,000 miles on an odyssey to Rio

له‌ گه‌شتێكی پر سه‌ركێشیدا 3000 میلی بری (به‌ره‌و شاری (ریۆ

to the Earth Summit

بۆ به‌شداری كردن له‌ كۆنفراسی په‌ره‌پێدانی ژینگه‌یی

to tell the world what was happening

تا له‌م رێیه‌وه‌ به‌ جیهان بڵێ

in his tiny, little corner.

كه‌ له‌ ناوچه‌ كه‌م و بچووكه‌ی ئه‌و .چ رووده‌دا

And he went because he hoped the world would listen.

بۆیه‌ به‌شداری كرد چونكه‌ هیوای وابوو ،كه‌ جیهان گوێی لێ بگرێت

Some did, not everybody.

.هه‌ندێ گوێیان بۆ گرت،به‌ڵام هه‌مووشیان نا

But if you can imagine this young man

به‌ڵام ئه‌گه‌ر بێتو وێنای شێوه‌ی ئه‌و پیاوه‌ گه‌نجه‌ بكه‌ی

with his headdress and his flowing robe,

،كه‌ به‌و جامانه‌و عه‌با شۆره‌ی به‌ری

learning a new language, Portuguese,

،زمانێكی نوێ فێرده‌بێت كه‌ پورتوگالیه‌

not to mention English,

ئه‌وه‌ جگه‌ له‌ زمانی ئینگلیزیش

going to Rio,

،به‌ره‌و شاری ریۆ سه‌فه‌ر بكات

building a bridge

بیه‌وێت پردێكی په‌یوه‌ندی له‌ نێوان خۆی و خه‌ڵكێك بنیات بنێ

to reach out to people he'd never met before --

a pretty hostile world.

،كه‌ هه‌رگیز پێشتر نه‌یبینیوون .له‌و جیهانه‌ دژواره‌

But he wasn't dismayed.

له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌وه‌شدا بێ ئومێد و ترسناک نه‌بوو

Benki came back to his village full of ideas --

بێنكی گه‌رایه‌وه‌ گونده‌كه‌ی ،به‌ كۆمه‌ڵێك بیرۆكه‌وه‌

new technologies, new research,

،به‌ ته‌كنه‌لۆژیای نوێوه‌وه‌ به‌ لێكۆڵینه‌وه‌ی نوێوه‌

new ways of understanding what was going on.

وه‌ به‌ چه‌ند رێگایه‌كی نوێ بۆ تێگه‌یشتن .له‌و شتانه‌ی كه‌ پێشتر ده‌گوزه‌را

Since that time,

هه‌ر له‌و كاته‌وه‌، له‌گه‌ڵ خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ی ،له‌ كاره‌كه‌ى به‌رده‌وام بۆوه‌

he's continued to work with his people,

and not only the Ashaninka Nation,

،نه‌ك هه‌ر به‌ ته‌نها له‌گه‌ڵ گه‌لی ئه‌شانینكا

but all the peoples of the Amazon and beyond.

به‌ڵكو له‌گه‌ڵ هه‌موو خه‌ڵكی .ئه‌مه‌زۆن و ده‌وروپشتی

He's built schools

قوتابخانه‌ى بنیات ناوه‌ بۆ منداڵان

to teach children to care for the forest.

تا فێری پاراستنی دارستان بن

Together, he's led the reforestation

،به‌ هاوكاری له‌گه‌ڵ خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ی

سه‌رپه‌رشتی دووباره‌ چاندنه‌وه‌ی داروباری زیاترله‌ 25% ئه‌و زه‌ویانه‌ی كرد

of over 25 percent of the land

that had been destroyed by the loggers.

.له‌ لایه‌ن داربره‌كانه‌وه‌ له‌ناوچوبوون

He's created a cooperative

ده‌سته‌یه‌كى پێكهێناوه‌ بۆ هاوكاریكردنی خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ی

to help people diversify their livelihoods.

.بۆ هه‌مه‌جۆركردنی سه‌رچاوه‌ى گوزه‌رانیان

And he's brought the internet and satellite technology

ته‌كنه‌لۆژیای سه‌ته‌لایت و ئینته‌رنێتی ،بۆ دارستانەکە ره‌خساند

to the forest --

تاوه‌كو له‌ رێیانه‌وه‌ خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ بتوانن ،چاودێری داربرینه‌وه‌ی ناوچكه‌ بكه‌ن

both so that people themselves

could monitor the deforestation,

but also that he could speak from the forest

وه‌ هه‌روه‌ها تاكو بتوانێ له‌ جه‌رگه‌ی دارستانەکەوە

to the rest of the world.

.له‌گه‌ڵ به‌شه‌كانی تری جیهان قسه‌ بكات

If you were to meet Benki

،ئه‌گه‌ چاوت به‌ بێنكی كه‌وتبا لێت بپرسیبا

and ask him, "Why are you doing this?

بۆ ئه‌و كاره‌ ده‌كه‌ی؟

Why are you putting yourself at risk?

بۆ خۆت ده‌خه‌یه‌ مه‌ترسیه‌وه‌؟

Why are you making yourself vulnerable

بۆ خۆت به‌رپرسیار ده‌كه‌ی له‌و جیهانه‌ نه‌یاره‌؟

to what is often a hostile world?"

he would tell you,

به‌ تۆش ده‌ڵێت ھەروەک پێمن وتی

as he told me,

له‌ خۆم پرسی

"I asked myself," he said,

باو و باپیرانم چیان ده‌كرد"

"What did my grandparents and my great-grandparents do

بۆ پاراستنی ئه‌م جه‌نگه‌ڵه‌

to protect the forest for me?

له‌به‌رخاتری من؟

And what am I doing?"

"ئه‌ی من چی ده‌كه‌م بۆ پاراستنی؟

،بۆیه‌ كاتێ بیر له‌وه‌ ده‌كه‌مه‌وه‌

So when I think of that,

I wonder what our grandchildren

له‌خۆم ده‌پرسم ئاخۆ نه‌وه‌كانمان و

and our great-grandchildren,

نه‌وه‌ی نه‌وه‌كانمان چ وه‌ڵامێكیان ده‌بێت

when they ask themselves that question,

.كاتێ هه‌مان پرسیار له‌خۆیان ده‌كه‌ن

I wonder how they will answer.

.ده‌بێ وه‌ڵامی ئه‌وان چی بێت

من وای ده‌بینم، كه‌ داهاتووی جیهان

For me, the world is veering

towards a future we don't much want

به‌راستی به‌ره‌و ئاراسته‌یه‌ك ده‌روات كاتێ كه‌ به‌ ووردی بیری لێده‌كه‌ینه‌وه‌

when we really think about it deep inside.

.ئه‌وه‌نده‌ هیوا بۆ ئه‌و داهاتوه‌ ناخوازین

It's a future we don't know the details of,

خۆ ئێمه‌ وورده‌كاریه‌كانی ئه‌م داهاتووه‌ نازانین،به‌ڵام

but it's a future that has signs,

،ئه‌م داهاتووه‌ چه‌ند هێمایه‌كی هه‌یه‌

just like Benki saw the signs around him.

رێك وه‌كو ئه‌و هێمایانه‌ی كه‌ بێنكی لة .ده‌وروبه‌ری خۆی هه‌ستی پێ ده‌كرد

We know we are running out of what we need.

ئێمه‌ ده‌زانین ئه‌و شتانه‌ی كه‌ .پێویستمانه‌ به‌ره‌و نه‌مان ده‌چێت

We're running out of fresh water.

.ئاوی خواردنه‌وه‌مان به‌ره‌و نةمان ده‌چێت

We're running out of fossil fuels.

.نه‌وتی ژێر زه‌وی به‌ره‌و له‌ناوچوون ده‌چێ

We're running out of land.

.خاكمان به‌ره‌و نه‌مان ده‌چێت

We know climate change is going to affect all of us.

وه‌ ده‌شزانین كه‌ گۆرانی كه‌ش و هه‌وا .خه‌ریكه‌ كار له‌ هه‌موومان بكات

We don't know how, but we know it will.

.نازانین چۆن، به‌س ده‌زانین كه‌ رووده‌ده‌ن

And we know that there will be more of us than ever before --

وه‌ ده‌شزانین كه‌ ژماره‌مان به‌ به‌راوورد ،له‌گه‌ڵ پێشوتر زۆر زیاتر ده‌بێت

five times as many people in 40 years

له‌ ماوه‌ی 40 ساڵدا پێنج ئه‌وه‌نده‌ی .60 ساڵی رابردوو زیادی كردووه‌

than 60 years ago.

We are running out of what we need.

.ئه‌وه‌ی پێویستمانه‌ به‌ره‌و كۆتایی ده‌چێت

And we also know

وه‌ ده‌شزانین كه‌ جیهان به‌ شێوه‌یه‌كی تر

that the world has changed in other ways,

that since 1960

گۆراوه‌، ته‌نانه‌ت له‌ ساڵی 1960 ه‌وه‌

there are one-third as many new countries

سێیه‌كی ووڵاته‌ نوێیه‌كانی جیهان

that exist as independent entities on the planet.

به‌شێوه‌ی قه‌واره‌ی سه‌ربخۆ هه‌ن .له‌سه‌ر ئه‌م هه‌ساره‌یه‌

Egos, systems of government --

،له‌خۆبایی ببون، سیسته‌می ده‌سه‌ڵات داری

figuring it out --

.خستنه‌ روو، گۆرانی گه‌وره‌

massive change.

،سه‌ره‌رای ئه‌مانه‌ش

And in addition to that,

ده‌زانین كه‌ پێنج ووڵاتی دیكه‌ی زل هێز

we know that five other really big countries

،له‌ داهاتوودا به‌ راستی رای خۆیان ده‌بێت

are going to have a say in the future,

a say we haven't even really started to hear yet --

،رایه‌ك كه‌ ئێمه‌ هێشتا گوێمان لێنه‌بووه‌

China, India,

،ئه‌و ووڵاتانه‌ش، چین، هیندستان، رووسیا

Russia, South Africa

،باشوری ئه‌فریقا و وڵاتی به‌رازیلى بێنكی

and Benki's own Brazil,

ئه‌و وڵاته‌ی كه‌ بێنكی مافه‌ مه‌ده‌نیه‌كانی خۆی تيا به‌ده‌ست نه‌ هێنابو

where Benki got his civil rights

only in the 1988 constitution.

.تا ده‌ستوری ساڵی 1988

له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌وه‌ش ئیوه‌ هه‌مووتان .ئه‌و شتانه‌ ده‌زانن كه‌ باسمان كرد

But you know all that.

You know more than Benki knew when he left his forest

ئێوه‌ زیاتر له‌وه‌ ده‌زانن كه‌ بێنكی ده‌یزانی كاتێ دارستان جێهێشت و

and went 3,000 miles.

3000 .میل بری

You also know

ئێوه‌ ئه‌وه‌ش ده‌زانن

that we can't just keep doing what we've always done,

كه‌ ناتوانین به‌رده‌وام بین له‌سه‌ر ،ئه‌و شتانه‌ی كه‌ پێشتر كردوومانه‌

because we'll get the results

چونكه‌ هه‌مان ئه‌و شتانه‌ به‌ده‌ست دێنین

we've always gotten.

And this reminds me of something I understand

ئه‌وه‌ شتێكم بیر ده‌هێنێته‌وه‌ كه‌ ئێستا له‌و شته‌َده‌گه‌م

Lord Salisbury said to Queen Victoria over a hundred years ago,

كه‌ سه‌د ساڵ به‌ر له‌ ئێستا میر سالیسبێری ،به‌ شاژن ڤیكتۆریای گووت

when she was pressing him, "Please change."

ئه‌و كاته‌ی كه‌ ڤیكتۆریا پێداگیری ،له‌ قسه‌كه‌ی ده‌كردو پێی ده‌گووت

He said, "Change?

،"تكایه‌ بگۆرێ"

Why change?

میر سالیسبێریش گووتی:" گۆران؟

Things are bad enough as they are."

گۆرانكاری بۆچیه‌؟ ".شته‌كان خراپترن له‌وه‌ی كه‌ ئێستا هه‌ن

We have to change.

.ده‌بی بگۆرێین

بۆیه‌ كاتێ كه‌ من ته‌ماشای ،جیهانی ده‌وروبه‌رمان ده‌كه‌م

It's imperative to me, when I look around the world,

that we need to change ourselves.

به‌ پێویستی ده‌زانم كه‌ بگۆرێین

.پێویسته‌ ئێمه‌ خۆمان بگۆرین

We need new models of what it means to be a leader.

نموونه‌ی نوێمان پێویسته‌ تا گوزارشت .له‌ مانای بوون به‌ سه‌ركرده‌ بكات

We need new models

of being a leader and a human in the world.

پێویستمان به‌ نموونه‌ی نوێ هه‌یه‌ .بۆ بوون به‌ سه‌ركرده‌ و مرۆڤ له‌م جیهانه‌

I started life as a banker.

.من وه‌كو بانكه‌وانێك ده‌ستم به‌كار كرد

Now I don't admit to that

ئه‌مه‌م لای كه‌س نه‌دركاندوه‌

to anybody but my very close friends.

.ته‌نها هاورێ نزیكه‌كانم نه‌بێت

،به‌ڵام له‌م هه‌شت ساڵه‌ی دوایی

But for the past eight years,

I've done something completely different.

.شتێكی ته‌واو جیاوازم كردوه‌

My work has taken me around the world,

به‌ شێوه‌ك كه‌ به‌ راستی شه‌ره‌فمه‌ندبومه‌

where I've had the real privilege

of meeting people like Benki

كه‌ چاوم به‌ كه‌سانێكی وه‌كو بێنكی و

and many others who are making change happen

هه‌موو ئه‌و كه‌سانه‌ بكه‌وێ كه‌ وا ده‌كه‌ن

in their communities --

،گۆرانكاری له‌ كۆمه‌ڵگاكه‌یان رووبدات

people who see the world differently,

،خه‌ڵكانێك كه‌ جیهان به‌ جیاوازتر ده‌بینن

who are asking different questions,

خه‌ڵكانێك كه‌ پرسیاری جیاوازتر ده‌كه‌ن و

who have different answers,

،وه‌ وه‌ڵامی جیاوازیان هه‌یه‌

who understand the filters that they wear

خه‌ڵكانێك ده‌زانن كه‌ چ پاڵێوه‌رێك بپۆشن

when they go out into the world.

This is Sanghamitra.

Sanghamitra comes from Bangalore.

.سانگامیترا خه‌ڵكی به‌نگه‌لۆریای هندستانه‌

I met Sanghamitra eight years ago

هه‌شت ساڵ به‌ر له‌ ئێستا له‌ به‌نگه‌لۆریا چاوم به‌ سانگامیترا كه‌وت

when I was in Bangalore

كاتێك له‌وێ ۆورك شۆپێكم رێكده‌خست

organizing a workshop with leaders of different NGO's

له‌گه‌ڵ سه‌ركرده‌كانی چه‌ند رێكخراوێكی نا حكومی جیاواز

working in some of the hardest aspects of society.

كه‌ كارمان له‌سه‌ر هه‌ندێ له‌ قورسترین بواره‌كانی كۆمه‌ڵگا ده‌كرد.

Sanghamitra didn't start life

سه‌ره‌تا سانگامیترا وه‌كۆ سه‌رۆكی ،رێكخراوێكی ناحكومی ده‌ستی به‌كار نه‌كرد

as a leader of an NGO,

she started her career as university professor,

وه‌كو پرۆفیسۆرێكی زانكۆ ،ده‌ستی به‌ پیشه‌كه‌ی خۆی كرد

teaching English literature.

.ئه‌ده‌بی ئینگلیزی ده‌گووته‌وه‌

But she realized that she was much too detached from the world doing that.

Today there are still three million

That's the second largest population in the world.

When I asked Sanghamitra,

"How did you get from English literature

to HIV/AIDS?"

not an obvious path,

she said to me,

"It's all connected.

Literature makes one sensitive,

sensitive to people,

Since that time, under her leadership,

and not just in urban, 7-million-population Bangalore,

Even that wasn't enough.

She wanted to change policy at the government level.

10 of their programs that she pioneered

He lost his wife to AIDS a couple of years ago,

But he saw the work, the care,

that Sanghamitra and her team brought to the village,

and he wanted to be part of it.

He's a Leaders' Quest fellow, and that helps him with his work.

They've pioneered a different approach to villages.

Instead of handing out information in pamphlets,

they bring theater troupes,

And they sit around,

and they talk about dreams.

Sanghamitra told me just last week --

she had just come back from two weeks in the villages,

and she had a real breakthrough.

They were sitting in a circle, talking about the dreams for the village.

And the young women in the village

spoke up and said, "We've changed our dream.

Our dream

is for our partners, our husbands,

خه‌ونه‌كانمان بۆ دۆسته‌كانمانه‌، بۆ هاوسه‌ره‌كانمانه‌،

not to be given to us because of a horoscope,

نه‌ك له‌ رێی كه‌للوه‌كانه‌وه‌ چاوه‌رێی خه‌ونه‌كانمان بكه‌ین،

but to be given to us

به‌ڵكو به‌ خه‌ونه‌كانمان ده‌گه‌ین

because they've been tested for HIV."

If you are lucky enough to meet Sanghamitra

and ask her why and how,

how have you achieved so much?

and very quietly, very softly say,

This is Dr. Fan Jianchuan.

Jianchuan comes from Sichuan Province

in southwest China.

He was born in 1957,

and you can imagine what his childhood

looked like and felt like,

He's been a soldier, a teacher,

a politician, a vice-mayor

and a business man.

But if you sat down and asked him, "Who are you really,

and what do you do?"

He would tell you, "I'm a collector,

پێت ده‌ڵێت من ئه‌نتیكه‌چیم،

كۆكه‌ره‌وه‌ی كه‌ل و په‌لی مۆزه‌خانه‌م.

and I curate a museum."

I was lucky; I had heard about him for years,

زۆر به‌ به‌خت بووم، چه‌ندین ساڵ بوو ده‌رباره‌ی ئه‌وم بیستبوو،

and I finally met him earlier this year

دواجار له‌ سه‌ره‌تای ئه‌و ساڵ پێی گه‌یشتم

at his museum in Chengdu.

He's been a collector all of his life,

starting when he was four or five in the early 1960's.

These are pieces that you won't find anywhere else in the world,

a war that's not talked about in China very much

Why did he do all this?

Because he thought

a nation should never repeat the mistakes of the past.

So, from commissioning

of the heroes of the Sino-Japanese War,

But he doesn't want his nation

These people inspire me,

and they inspire me because they show us

what is possible when you change the way

you look at the world,

change the way you look at your place in the world.

They didn't read a manual, "How to Be a Good Leader

But they have qualities we'd all recognize.

They have drive, passion, commitment.

They've gone away

from what they did before,

and they've gone

to something they didn't know.

They've tried to connect worlds

هه‌وڵیان داوه‌ ئه‌و جیهانانه‌ پێكه‌وه‌ ببه‌ستنه‌وه‌

they didn't know existed before.

كه‌ پێشتر هه‌ستیان به‌ بوونیان نه‌كردبوو.

They've built bridges, and they've walked across them.

They have a sense of the great arc of time

They know people have come before them

and will follow them.

خه‌ڵكانێكیش دوای ئه‌وان ده‌كه‌ون.

And they know that they're part of a whole,

وه‌ ده‌شزانن كه‌ به‌شێكن له‌و هه‌موو خه‌ڵكه‌ى

that they depend on other people.

كه‌ پشت به‌ كه‌سانى تر ده‌به‌ستن. ده‌زانن

It's not about them, they know that,

كه‌ كاره‌ گرنگه‌كان كێشه‌ی ئه‌وان نیه‌

but it has to start with them.

به‌ڵام ده‌بێ له‌ كاره‌ گرنگه‌كان ده‌ست پێبكه‌ی.

And they have humility.

ئه‌وانه‌ كه‌سانی ساده‌و له‌خۆبورده‌ن.

It just happens.

ته‌نها وا رێكه‌وت كه‌ ئه‌وان

But we know it doesn't just happen, don't we?

ئه‌و كارانه‌ بكه‌ن.به‌ڵام ئێمه‌ ده‌زانین كه‌ ته‌نها رێكه‌وت نه‌بو، وانیه‌؟

زۆری ده‌وێت تا وا بكه‌ین بگه‌ینه‌ ئامانج،

We know it takes a lot to make it happen,

and we know the direction the world is going in.

وه‌ ده‌زانین جیهان به‌ چ ئاراسته‌یه‌ك دا ده‌روات.

So I think we need succession planning

بۆیه‌ من پێم وایه‌ ئێمه‌ پێویستیمان به‌ زنجیره‌ پلانێك هه‌یه‌

on a global basis.

We can't wait for the next generation, the new joiners,

to come in and learn how to be the good leaders we need.

I think it has to start with us.

how hard it is.

But the good news is that we don't have to figure it out as we go along;

we have models, we have examples,

به‌وه‌ نیه‌ وێنای كاره‌كه‌ بكه‌ین و فێربین، ئێمه‌ نموونه‌مان هه‌یه‌،

like Benki and Sanghamitra and Jianchuan.
