Society has a set of stories it tells itself

كۆمه‌ڵگه‌ زنجیره‌یه‌ك چیڕۆكی هه‌یه‌ كه‌ له‌باره‌ی

about who refugees are and what they look like.

په‌نابه‌ران كێن و چۆنن ده‌دوێت.

But let me tell you a different story.

با من چیڕۆكێكی جیاوازترتان بۆ باس بكه‌م.

My story.

چیڕۆكی خۆم.

I'm a filmmaker and a refugee

من فلیمسازم و په‌نابه‌رم

from a small village in northern Syria.

له‌ دێیه‌كی بچووك له‌ باكوری سوریا.

In our village, growing up, there was no stable electricity supply.

له‌و دێیه‌ی لێوه‌ی گه‌وره‌ بووم، سه‌رچاوه‌یه‌كی جێگیری كاره‌با نه‌بوو.

We spend most of our nights around gas lanterns

زۆربه‌ی شه‌وه‌كانمان به‌ دانیشتن له‌ ده‌وری له‌مپای گازی به‌سه‌رده‌برد

and told stories about Syrian mythological superbeings

له‌گه‌ڵ گێڕانه‌وه‌ی چیڕۆكی پاڵه‌وانی ئه‌فسانه‌یی سووری

that protected the vulnerable.

كه‌ بێهێزه‌كانی ده‌پاراست.

I was a boy who loved the stories of superheroes.

كوڕێك بووم حه‌زم به‌ چیڕۆكی پاڵه‌وانه‌كان بوو.

But later on, these stories shifted to tales of heroes

به‌ڵام دواتر، ئه‌م چیڕۆكانه‌ بۆ چیڕۆكی ئه‌و پاڵه‌وانانه‌ی

that my family has to face under the Assad dictatorship.

كه‌ خێزانه‌كه‌م ده‌بوو ڕووبه‌ڕووی بێته‌وه‌ له‌ ژێر ڕژێمی دیكتاتۆری ئه‌سه‌د گۆڕان.

One of my uncles was killed under torture.

یه‌كێك له‌ مامه‌كانم له‌ ژێر ئه‌شكه‌نجه‌دا كوژرا.

My father had to burn his books before they were even published

باوكم ده‌بووایه‌ په‌رتووكه‌كانی بسووتێنێت پێش ئه‌وه‌ی بڵاوبكرێنه‌وه‌

in order to protect us from the regime.

تاكو له‌ ڕژێمه‌كه‌ بمانپارێزێت.

He burned his dreams along with his books.

له‌گه‌ڵ په‌رتووكه‌كانی خه‌ونه‌كانیشی سووتاند.

These stories must not be forgotten,

پێویسته‌ ئه‌م چیڕۆكانه‌ له‌یاد نه‌كرێن،

my parents insisted.

خێزانه‌كه‌م سووربوون له‌سه‌ر ئه‌مه‌.

The stories stopped being a pastime.

چیتر چیڕۆكه‌كان وه‌ك دڵخۆشی نه‌مان.

It became a form of resistance.

به‌رگی به‌رگرییان پۆشی.

I studied filmmaking and focused on documentaries.

له‌ فلیمسازی خوێندم و جه‌ختم له‌سه‌ر به‌ڵگه‌ نامه‌ ده‌كرده‌وه‌.

Documentary filmmaking, you see, became my way of resistance.

هه‌روه‌ك ده‌بینن، فلیمی به‌ڵگه‌نامه‌یی بووه‌ ڕێگه‌ی به‌رگریم.

I documented stories of Syrians who opposed the Assad regime,

چیڕۆكی ئه‌و سوورییانه‌م تۆمار ده‌كرد كه‌ به‌رهه‌ڵستی ڕژێمی ئه‌سه‌دیان ده‌كرد،

in 2011, when the revolution started.

له‌ 2011، كه‌ شۆڕش هه‌ڵگیرسا.

I was arrested, tortured

ده‌ستبه‌سه‌ركرام، ئه‌شكه‌نجه‌درام

and sexually assaulted.

و له‌لایه‌نی جه‌سته‌ییه‌وه‌ ئه‌شكه‌نجه‌درام.

When I was released, I left Syria.

كه‌ ئازادكرام، سوووریام جێهێشت.

I was traumatized

تووشی ڕاته‌كانێكی ده‌روونیی ببووم

and tried to end my life.

هه‌وڵمدا كۆتایی به‌ ژیانم بێنم.

My wife stood by me and helped me hang onto life.

هاوسه‌ره‌كه‌م پاڵپشتم بوو یارمه‌تی دام ژیانم لا خۆشه‌ویست بێت.

But as a result, I stopped making films.

به‌ڵام له‌ ده‌ره‌نجامی ئه‌مه‌، وازم له‌ فلیم سازاندن هێنا.

Despite my arrest and torture,

سه‌ڕه‌ڕای گرتن و ئه‌شكه‌نجه‌دانم،

I took many risks in order to see my family.

سه‌ركێشی زۆرم ئه‌نجامدا بۆ بینینی خیزانه‌كه‌م.

So a year later, when the Assad regime lost control of the north of Syria,

ساڵێك دوای ئه‌مه‌، كاتێك ڕژێمی ئه‌سه‌د كۆنتڕۆڵی به‌سه‌ر باكووری سوریا له‌ده‌ستدا،

I was able to visit my hometown.

توانیم سه‌ردانی نشینگه‌ی خۆم بكه‌م.

There, I met many inspiring Syrians,

له‌وێ چاوم به‌ چه‌ندین سووریی ئیلهام به‌خش كه‌وت،

real life superheroes who stayed behind to save lives.

پاڵه‌وانانی ڕاسته‌قینه‌ كه‌ له‌ دواوه‌ وه‌ستابوون بۆ ڕزگاركردنی گیانی خه‌ڵكی.

I was captivated by how genuine they were.

دڵسۆزییان زۆر كاری تێكردم.

Without planning, I took out my camera and started filming,

به‌بێ پلان بۆ دانان، كامێراكه‌م هێنا ده‌ره‌وه‌ و ده‌ستم به‌ وێنه‌گرتن كرد،

I felt inspired.

هه‌ستم به‌ ئیلهام به‌خشین كرد.

These real-life superheroes saved the filmmaker in me.

ئه‌م پاڵه‌وانه‌ ڕاسته‌قینانه‌ فلیمسازییان له‌ مندا پاراست.

Khalid was one of the heroes in my first feature film,

خالید یه‌كێك بوو له‌ پاڵه‌وانه‌كان له‌ یه‌كه‌م فلیمی درێژمه‌ودام،

"Last Men in Aleppo."

“كۆتا پیاوه‌كانی حه‌له‌ب.”

Khaled was a simple man who dreamed to be a firefighter,

خالید پیاوێكی ساده‌ بوو كه‌ ده‌یویست ببێته‌ ئاگركوژێنه‌ره‌وه‌،

but he couldn't follow his dream.

به‌ڵام نه‌یتوانی دوای خه‌ونه‌كه‌ی بكه‌وێت.

So he worked as a house painter.

بۆیه‌ وه‌كو بۆیه‌چی خانوو كاریده‌كرد.

When the war destroyed his city, he found his calling.

كاتێك شاره‌كه‌ی به‌هۆی جه‌نگ وێرانبوو، ئامانجی ڕاسته‌قینه‌ی خۆی دۆزییه‌وه‌.

He joined the White Helmets,

په‌یوه‌ندی به‌ كڵاوه‌زرێی سپییه‌وه‌ كرد،

a group of Syrian volunteers who formed a civil defense organization

گروپێك له‌ خۆبه‌خشانی سووریی كه‌ ڕێكخراوێكی به‌رگری شارستانییان پێكهێنابوو

to rescue civilians from their bombed homes.

بۆ ڕزگاركردنی خه‌ڵكی مه‌ده‌نی له‌ ماڵه‌ بۆمبابارانكراوه‌كانیان.

Khalid saved hundreds of lives.

خالید ژیانی سه‌دان كه‌سی ڕزگاركرد.

While doing that, he died as a hero.

هه‌ر له‌ڕێی ئه‌م كاره‌وه‌، وه‌كو پاڵه‌وانێك گیانی سپارد.

The second hero is Dr. Amani Ballour,

دووه‌م پاڵه‌وان، دكتۆر ئه‌مانی به‌للووره‌،

whose story I told in my second film, “The Cave.”

كه‌ له‌ دووه‌م فلیمم به‌ناوی “ئه‌شكه‌وت” باسیم كردووه‌.

It's a story of an extraordinary woman

چیڕۆكی ژنێكی ناوازه‌یه‌

who founded an underground hospital in eastern Ghouta.

كه‌ نه‌خۆشخانه‌یه‌كی له‌ژێرزه‌وی له‌ ڕۆژهه‌ڵاتی غوته‌ بنیاتنا.

She treated injured children, victims of atrocities,

چاره‌سه‌ری منداڵه‌ برینداره‌كانی ده‌كرد، قوربانیانی ئه‌و وه‌حشیگه‌رییه‌ی

while bombs fell around them.

كه‌ له‌ ئه‌نجامی كه‌وتنی بۆمب له‌ ده‌وریان بریندار ده‌بوون.

As a female scientist,

وه‌كو زانایه‌كی مێینه‌،

she defied sexism and patriarchy

به‌ره‌نگاریی زایه‌ندپه‌رستی و باوكسالاری بووه‌وه‌

to save civilians who suffered two attacks with chemical weapons.

بۆ پاراستنی خه‌ڵكی سڤیل كه‌ ڕووبه‌ڕوی دوو هێرشی چه‌كی كیمیایی ببوونه‌وه‌.

And then there are the two superheroes who saved my own life.

دواتر ئه‌و دوو پاڵه‌وانه‌ش كه‌ ژیانی منیان ڕزگاركرد.

Khalil Ma'touq and Anwar al-Bunni.

خالید مه‌عتووق و ئه‌نوه‌ر لبوننی.

They are the lawyers who took up my case

ئه‌و پارێزه‌رانه‌ی كه‌وا كه‌یسه‌كه‌ی منیان وه‌رگرت

and got me out of the most notorious torture facilities in Damascus.

منیان له‌ خراپترین ناوه‌نده‌كانی ئه‌شكه‌نجه‌دان له‌ دیمه‌شق هێنا ده‌ره‌وه‌.

While Anwar now is in Germany, fighting for justice for Syrian refugees,

ئه‌نوه‌ر ئێستا كه‌ له‌ ئه‌ڵمانیایه‌، بۆ مافی په‌نابه‌ره‌ سووریه‌كان شه‌ڕده‌كات،

Khalil was arrested in 2012 because of his work.

له‌ ساڵی 2012، خالید به‌ هۆی كاره‌كه‌یه‌وه‌ ده‌ستگیركرا.

We don't know anything about him

هیچ شتێك له‌باره‌یه‌وه‌ نازانین

because the Syrian regime continues to deny his arrest,

چونكه‌ ڕژێمی سووریی تا ئێستاش نكووڵیی له‌ زیندانیكردنی ده‌كات،

but his work is not in vain.

به‌ڵام كاره‌كانی بێ ئه‌نجام نه‌بوون.

It's for Khalil I faced my torturer in Germany.

له‌پێناو خالید ڕووبه‌ڕووی ئه‌شكه‌نجه‌دان بوومه‌وه‌ له‌ ئه‌ڵمانیا.

In June 2020 I gave my testimony

له‌ حوزه‌یرانی 2020 گه‌واهی خۆم پێشكه‌شكرد

at the first trial on Syrian state of torture

له‌ یه‌كه‌م دادگاییكردن له‌سه‌ر ئه‌شكه‌نجه‌دانی سووریه‌كان

before a German court in Koblenz.

له‌پێش دادگایه‌كی ئه‌ڵمانی له‌ كۆبڵنز.

It is for Amani and Khalid

له‌پێناو ئه‌مانی و خالیده‌

I'm still the filmmaker today.

ئاتكو ئه‌مڕۆش فلیمسازم.

They inspired me to create a new cinematic universe of superheroes,

ئیلهامیان پێ به‌خشیم تا جیهانێكی سینه‌مایی نوێ له‌ پاڵه‌وانان بنیات بنێم،

based on their quest to end injustice.

به‌ پشت به‌ستن به‌ داخوازییه‌كانیان بۆ كۆتایی هێنان به‌ نادادپه‌روه‌ریی.

Creating this cinematic universe has not been an easy journey.

بنیاتنانی ئه‌م جیهانه‌ سینه‌ماییه‌ گه‌شتێكی ئاوا ئاسان نه‌بووه‌.

It's been a brutal struggle

سه‌ركێشییه‌كی دڕندانه‌ بووه‌

against racism and discrimination in the film industry,

دژی ڕه‌گه‌زپه‌رستی و جیاكاری له‌ پیشه‌سازی فلیمسازیی،

an industry dominated by people who think they know how the audience,

پیشه‌سازییه‌ك ئه‌و كه‌سانه‌ ده‌ستیان به‌سه‌رداگرتووه‌ كه‌ وا بیر ده‌كه‌نه‌وه‌

how you want a film about Syrians to be,

ده‌زانن چۆن بینه‌ر، چۆن ده‌ته‌وێت فلیمێك بێت له‌باره‌ی سووریه‌كان،

how you want superheroes or refugees to look.

ده‌ته‌وێت پاڵه‌وان یاخود په‌نابه‌ره‌كان چۆن ده‌ركه‌ون.

But refugees look just like me.

به‌ڵام په‌نابه‌ره‌كان هه‌روه‌ك منن.

These refugees were superheroes

ئه‌م په‌نابه‌رانه‌ پاڵه‌وان بوون

who defied the status quo and stereotype.

كه‌ به‌ره‌نگاری بارودۆخی هه‌نووكه‌یی و سه‌رمه‌شقی بوونه‌وه‌.

So I will not stop. I owe it to them.

بۆیه‌ من ناوه‌ستم. من قه‌رزباری ئه‌وانم .

I owe it to my daughter, the young refugee child.

من قه‌رزباری كچه‌كه‌مم، ئه‌و منداڵه‌ په‌نابه‌ره‌ بچووكه‌.

To tell the stories of superheros

بۆ گێڕانه‌وه‌ی چیڕۆكی پاڵه‌وانه‌كان

who look just like her.

كه‌ وه‌كو ئه‌ون.

For her, I will continue to resist.

له‌پێناوی ئه‌ودا، به‌رده‌وام ده‌بم له‌ به‌رگریی.
