You've probably seen an email or an internet post

အင်္ဂလိပ်လို စာလုံးပေါင်းရတာ ပေါက်ကရ နိုင်ပြီး စိတ်ကုန်စရာ ကောင်းပုံ

about how weird and random English spelling seems to be.

အီးမေးလ်တွေ ဘလော့ဂ်တွေကို ခင်ဗျားတို့ မြင်ဘူးကြမှာပါ။

But what if I told you that it actually makes perfect sense?

တကယ်တော့ ၎င်းဟာ အဓိပ္ပါယ်တွေနဲ့ ပြီးပြည့်စုံနေတာ ပြောပြချင်တယ်။

In fact, that's spelling's job:

တကယ်ကျတော့ စာလုံးပေါင်းခြင်းကမှ အနှစ်သာရကို ပြည့်စတောပါ။

Making sense. Think of spelling a word

စကားလုံးတစ်လုံးကို စာလုံးပေါင်းခြင်းကို

as peeling back the layers of an onion.

ကြက်သွန်နီ အခွံနွှာနေသလို စဉ်းစားကြည့်ပါ။

The first layer is a word's sense and meaning.

ပထမ အလွှာဟာ စကားလုံးရဲ့ အနှစ်သာရ နဲ့ အဓိပ္ပါယ် ဖြစ်တယ်။

Often there are multiple layers of meaning.

အနှစ်သာရဆီမှာ အလွှာတွေ တစ်ခုမက ရှိနိုင်တယ်။

Another layer is the word's structure.

နောက်အလွှာက စကားလုံးရဲ့ ဖွဲ့စည်းပုံပါ။

Think of the center of the onion as a word's base element,

ကြက်သွန်နီရဲ့ ဗဟိုကို စကာလုံးရဲ့ အခြေခံအဖြစ် ယူဆနိုင်တယ်၊

its essential kernel of meaning.

အဓိပ္ပါယ်ရဲ့ အနှစ်ချုပ်ပါ။

A free-base element, like O-N-E,

O-N-E ဒါမှမဟုတ် T-W-O လို အုတ်ြမစ်မဲ့

or T-W-O,

အပိုင်းကျတော့၊

can stand on its own as a word,

Two or more bases

Once we figure out a word's meaningful elements,

We can peel back its history to shed a little more light

The word "two," for example,

ဥပမာ "two" ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးထဲတွင် "W" ရှိနေခြင်းက "twice"၊

needs its "W" in order to mark its connection

"twelve"၊ "twenty"၊ "twin" နဲ့

to words like "twice," "twelve," "twenty,"

"between စကားလုံးများနဲ့ ဆက်စပ်နေခြင်းကို

"twin" and "between."

ပြသပေးရန်အတွက် ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

A word's history is another layer of the onion.

With that understanding, let's investigate the word "one."

That are really astonishing.

There are the familiar ones, like "anyone,"

But let's take a look at some unexpected derivations

of the word "one."

ယူပြီး လေ့လာကြည့်ရအောင်။

The word "alone" is built from the prefix A-L plus the base O-N-E.

စကားလုံး "alone"ကို ရှေ့ဆက် A-L ကို အခြေခံ O-N-E နဲ့ ပေါင်းထားတာပါ။

It's the same A-L prefix that we see

အဲဒီ ရှေ့ဆက် A-L ဟာ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ "always"၊ "already"၊

in "always," "already," "almighty" and "almost."

"almighty" နဲ့ "almost"ထဲ တွေ့ရတာနဲ့ အတူတူပါပဲ။

It means "all."

“အားလုံး”လို့ ဆိုလိုပါတယ်။

the word "alone" means "all one."

စကားလုံး "alone" က "all one"လို့ ဆိုလိုတာပါ။

It was misanalysed in the middle ages

အလယ်ခေတ်တုန်းက မှားပြီး "asleep"၊

as having the prefix "a," like in "asleep" and "awake" and "around,"

"awake" နဲ့ "around" အထဲက ရှေ့ဆက် "a" ဆိုပြီး ယူဆခဲ့ကြလို့

and a new base was born: L-O-N-E,

အခြေခံ အသစ်- L-O-N-E ကို ဖန်တီးခဲ့ကြရာ

which then developed into its own family.

၎င်းထံတွင် ကိုယ်ပိုင် မိသားစု ရှိလာခဲ့ပါတယ်။

In the word "atone," we find the familiar preposition "at"

"atone" ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးထဲတွင် ခုနက သိလာရတဲ့ "at" ကို

compounded with the base O-N-E.

အခြေခံ O-N-E နဲ့ ပေါင်းစပ်ထားခြင်းပါ။

See, when we atone for something we've done wrong,

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့က တစ်ခုခု မှားပြီးလုပ်မိလို့ ပြေအောင် ပြန်လုပ်ကြရာတွင်၊

we attempt to make things whole again,

But here's perhaps the best one of all:

the word "onion," which is also frequently derided as irregular

စကားလုံး "onion" ပါ၊ O နဲ့ စထားပေမဲ့ "uh" လို အသံထွက်ရလို့ ပုံမှန်

or crazy, for its spelling of "uh" with an O.

မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ ဆန်းတယ်လို့ အခေါ်ခံရတာပါ။

But again, if we look into the word's structure,

ဒါပေမဲ့၊ စကားလုံးရဲ့ ဖွဲ့စည်းထားမှုနဲ့ သမိုင်းကို လေ့လာကြည့်ကြမယ်ဆိုရင်၊

and its history, it's a mystery no more.

ထူးဆန်းတာ ဘာမှ ရှိတော့မှာ မဟုတ်ပါ။

When we look at the roots of an onion,

ကြက်သွန်နီရဲ့ အရင်းအမြစ်ကို လိုက်ကြည့်ရင်၊

we learn that it is written as O-N-E plus I-O-N,

၎င်းကို O-N-E အပေါင်း I-O-N ဆိုပြီး ရေးထားတာကို မြင်နိုင်တယ်၊

the same suffix we find in "tension," "action," "union"

"tension"၊ "action"၊ "union" များနဲ့ ထောင်ချီ ရှိကြတဲ့ အင်္ဂလိပ်

and thousands of other words in English.

စကားလုံးများထဲက နောက်ဆက်ကို မြင်နိုင်ပါတယ်၊

Unlike the many cloves in a head of garlic,

ကြက်သွန်ဖြူမှာ အမြွှာတစ်ခုမက ရှိတာမျိုး မဟုတ်ဘဲ၊

an onion has a single bulb.

ကြက်သွန်နီမှာ တစ်လုံးတည်းပါ။

It is marked by the state or condition of oneness.

တစ်ခုတည်း အဖြစ် ရပ်တည်နေခြင်းကို ထောက်ပြနေတာပါ။

Like an onion, English is one -

ကြက်သွန်နီလိုပဲ၊ အင်္ဂလိပ်ဟာလည်း တစ်ခုတည်းပါ၊ -

one single writing system shared across time and space.

ခေတ်အဆက်ဆက် နေရာတိုင်းမှာ တစ်ခုတည်း ရှိလာတဲ့ ရေးသားမှုစနစ်ပါ။

Its structure and its history have many layers,

၎င်းအား ဖွဲ့စည်းမှု နဲ့ သမိုင်းထံတွင် အလွှာတွေ အများကြီးပါ၊

and peeling them apart can really add flavor to our language

and spice up our understanding. See, spelling is never just about spelling,

but about how written words make sense.

It's almost enough to make you want to cry.
