Asgard, a realm of wonders, was where the Norse Gods made their home.

There Odin’s great hall of Valhalla towered above the mountains

One day when Thor, strongest of the gods, was off fighting these foes,

a stranger appeared, riding a powerful gray horse.

The visitor made the gods an astonishing offer.

He would build them the greatest wall they’d ever seen,

ئەو پەیمانی درووست کردنی گەورەترین دیواری پێبەخشین کە کەس نەیدیتوە،

higher than any giant could climb and stronger than any troll could break.

بەرزتر لەوەی هەر زەبەلاحێک بتوانێت بەسەری بکەوێت و بەهێزتر بەوەی کە تێکبشکێت.

All he asked in return was the beautiful goddess Freya’s hand in marriage—

لە بەرامبەردا، داوای هاوسەرگێری لە خواوەند فریایی کرد،

along with the sun and moon from the sky.

The gods balked at this request and were ready to send him away.

But the trickster Loki concocted a devious plan.

He told the gods they should accept the stranger’s offer,

داوای لە خواوەندەکان کرد سەودایەکە قبوڵ بکەن،

but set such strict conditions that he would fail to complete the wall in time.

بەڵام هەندێک مەرجی بۆ دابنێن ئەگەر لە کاتی پێویست تەواو نەبێت.

That way, they would lose nothing, while getting most of the wall built for free.

بەم شێوەیە، هیچ لە دەست نادەدن و دیوارێکی بەرزیش بە دەست دەهێنن.

Freya didn’t like this idea at all,

فرییا ئەم بیرۆکەی بە دڵ نەبوو.

but Odin and the other gods were convinced

بەڵام ئۆدین و خواوەندەکانیتر قایل بوون.

and came to an agreement with the builder.

لەگەڵ نەناسراوەکە ڕێکەوتن.

He would only have one winter to complete the wall.

نەناسراوەکە تەنها یەک زستانی هەبوو تا دیوارەکە تەواو بکات.

If any part was unfinished by the first day of summer,

ئەگەر هەر بەشێکی دیاوارەکە تا هاوین تەواو نەبێت،

he would receive no payment.

بەڵێنەکەی دەدۆڕێنێت.

And he could have no help from any other people.

و نابێت هیچ کەسێک یارمەتی بدات.

The gods sealed the deal with solemn oaths

خواوەندەکان پەیمانەکەیان بە سوێندی نەشکێنراو واژۆ کرد.

and swore the mason would come to no harm in Asgard.

و دەبێت دیوارەکە هیچ زیانێک بە ئاسگارد نەگەێنێت.

In the morning, the stranger began to dig the foundations at an astonishing speed,

بەیانی زوو، نەناسراوەکە بناغەی دیوارەکە بە خێراییەکی چاوەڕوان نەکراو قوڵ کرد.

and at nightfall he set off towards the mountains to obtain the building stones.

لە شەودا، بەرەو شاخەکە بەڕێ کەوت بۆ هێنانی بەرد بۆ دیوارەکە.

But it was only the next morning, when they saw him returning,

بەڵام لە بەیانی ڕۆژی دواتر گەڕایەوە.

that the gods began to worry.

خواوەندەکان نیگەران بوون.

As agreed, no other people were helping the mason.

وەک ڕێکەوتبوون، نەدەبوو هیچ کەسێک یارمەتی نەناسراوەکە بدات.

But his horse Svadilfari was hauling a load of stones so massive

بەڵام، سڤادیلفار، ئەسپی نەناسراوەکە، گالیسکەیەکی پڕ لە بەردی ڕادەکێشا

it left trenches in the ground behind them.

لە دوای خۆی زەویەکەی قوڵ دەکرد.

Winter came and went.

زستان هات و ڕۆیشت.

The stranger kept building, Svadilfari kept hauling,

and neither snow nor rain could slow their progress.

نە باران و نە بەفر دەیتوانێت ببێتە ڕێگر لە کاری نەناسراوەکە.

With only three days left until summer, the wall stood high and impenetrable,

تەنها ٣ ڕۆژ بۆ هاوین مابوو، دیوارەکە بەرز و تێکنەشکێنەر خۆی دەنواند،

with only the gate left to be built.

تەنها درووست کردنی دەرگەی دیوارەکە مابوو.

Horrified, the gods realized that not only would they lose

شڵەژان، خواوەندەکان تێگەیشتن کە ئەوانە نەک تەنها خوای

their fertility goddess forever,

بە پیتی دەدۆڕێنن،

but without the sun and moon the world would be plunged into eternal darkness.

بەبێ مانگ و خۆر، جیهان دەکەوێتە ناو تارکییەکی قوڵی ناکۆتا.

They wondered why they’d made such a foolish wager—

بیریان کردەوە کە بۆچی بە سەودایەکی گێلانە قایل بوون

and then remembered Loki and his terrible advice.

بۆیە، لوکی و ئامۆژگارییە خراپەکەیان بە بیر هاتەوە.

Suddenly, Loki didn’t feel so clever.

لە ناکاو، لوکی بە زیرەکی نەدەهاتە بەر چاو.

All of his fellow gods threatened him with an unimaginably painful death

if he didn’t find some way to prevent the builder from getting his payment.

So Loki promised to take care of the situation, and dashed away.

بۆیە، لوکی پەیمانی دا خۆی ئەم کێشەیە چارەسەر بکات و بزر بوو.

Outside, night had fallen,

لە دەرەوە، شەو هات،

and the builder prepared to set off to retrieve the final load of stones.

نەناسراوەکەش کەوتە ڕێ بۆ هێنانی کۆتا گالیسکەی پڕ بەرد.

But just as he called Svadilfari to him, a mare appeared in the field.

بەڵام لەو کاتەی کا بانگی ئەسپەکەی کرد، مایینێک دەرکەوت.

She was so beautiful that Svadilfari ignored his master

ماینەکە زۆر جوان بوو کە وای کرد ئەسپەکە وەڵامی خاوەنەکەی نەداتەوە

and broke free of his reins.

خۆی لە جڵەو ئازاد کرد.

The mason tried to catch him,

نەناسراوەکە هەوڵیدا کە ئەسپەکە بگرێت،

but the mare ran deep into the woods and Svadilfari followed.

بەڵام ماینەکە بەرەو قوڵای دارستنەکە ڕای کرد و ئەسپەکەش بە دوای کەوت.

The stranger was furious.

نەناسراوەکە زۆر توڕە بوو.

He knew that the gods were behind this and confronted them:

تێگەیشت خواوەندەکان لە پشت ئەم کارەن و ڕووبەڕوویان بویەوە:

no longer as a mild-mannered mason,

نەک وەک وەستایەکی لە سەرەخۆ،

but in his true form as a terrifying mountain giant.

بەڵکو لە شێوەی زەبەلاحی ترسناکی شاخەکان.

This was a big mistake.

ئەمە هەڵەیەکی گەورە بوو.

Thor had just returned to Asgard,

ثۆر تازە گەڕابوویەوە ئاسگارد،

and now that the gods knew a giant was in their midst,

کاتێک خواوەندەکان زانییان زەبەلاحێک لێرەیە،

they disregarded their oaths.

لە سوێندەکەیان پەشیمان بوونەوە.

The only payment the builder would receive—

and the last thing he would ever see—

was the swing of Thor’s mighty hammer Mjolnir.

As they set the final stones into the wall, the gods celebrated their victory.

لە دوای ئەوەی دوا خشتیان خستە سەر دیوارە زەبەلاحەکە، خواوەندەکان ئاهەنگیان گێڕا.

Loki was not among them, however.

بەڵام لوکی دیار نەبوو.

Several months would pass before he finally returned,

چەند مانگێک تێدەپەڕێت دوای ئەوەی لوکی دەگەڕێتەوە،

followed by a beautiful gray foal with eight legs.

جوانویەکی هەشت قاچ خۆڵەمێشیش لەگەڵ بوو.

The foal would grow into a magnificent steed named Sleipnir

جوانوکە گەورە دەبێت و دەبێت ئەسپێکی زەبەلاح بەناوی سلیپنەر

and become Odin’s mount, a horse that could outrun the wind itself.

و دەبێتە ئەسپی ئۆدین و لە با خێراتر دەبێت.

But exactly where he had come from was something Loki preferred not to discuss.

بەڵام ئەم ئەسپە لە کوێوە هاتووە، لوکی ئەم نهێنیە بە پەنهانی دەهێڵێتەوە.
