You know, I had a real rough time in school with ADD,

I earned a PhD, but ... tough to pay attention --

Only one thing grabbed my attention,

and it's that planet called Earth.

그건 바로 지구라고 불리는 행성이었지요.

But in this picture here, you'll see that Earth is mostly water.

여기 이 사진에서는 지구가 대부분 물로 덮여 있다는 것을

보실 수 있습니다. -- 태평양이죠.

That's the Pacific.

Seventy percent of Earth is covered with water.

지구 표면의 70%는 물로 덮여 있고 아마 여러분은 이렇게 말할 수도 있을 거에요.

You can say, "Hey, I know Earth. I live here."

"나는 지구에 대해서 잘 알아. 내가 지구에 살고 있는데."

You don't know Earth.

여러분들은 지구를 잘 모르십니다.

You don't know this planet, because most of it's covered with that --

여러분들은 지구를 잘 모르시지요. 그건 지구의 대부분이 물로 덮여있어서 --

average depth, two miles.

평균 깊이가 2마일(3.2km) 정도죠.

And when you go outside

밖에 나가 엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩이나

and look up at the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building,

크라이슬러 빌딩 같은 것을 한번 올려다 보세요.

the average depth of the ocean is 15 of those on top of one another.

바다의 평균 깊이는 그런 건물들의 15배 정도되요.

다른건 제외하고도요.

We've explored about five percent of what's in that water.

인간은 그 물속에 있는 내용의 약 5%정도를 탐사했습니다.

"Explored," meaning, for the first time, go peek and see what's there.

"탐사했다"라는 건 그 안에 처음으로 들어가 뭐가 있는지 슬쩍 봤다는 뜻입니다.

제가 오늘 하려는 것은 여러분들께

So what I want to do today is show you some things

about this planet, about the oceans.

행성과 바다에 대한 몇가지 사실을 보여드리고자 하는 겁니다.

I want to take you from shallow water down to the deep water,

여러분들을 일부 앝은 바다로부터 깊은 곳까지 안내해드리려고 합니다.

and hopefully, like me, you'll see some things

운이 좋으면, 제가 그랬듯이, 여러분들도 지구를 탐사한다는 것에

마음을 빼앗길만한 것을 발견하실지도 모르지요.

that get you hooked on exploring planet Earth.

산호아시죠. 수많은 산호를 보셨을텐데요.

You know things like corals; you've seen plenty of corals,

해변에서 잠수를 해보신 분들은

those of you who've been to the beach, snorkeling,

산호가 한번 가볼만한 놀라운 것이라는걸 아실겁니다.

know corals are an amazing place to go -- full of life,

온갖 생명체들, 몸집 큰 동물이나 성질 좋은 생물,

some big animals, small animals, some nice, some dangerous,

상어나 고래와 같이 위험한 동물까지 모든게 다 있어요.

sharks, whales, all that stuff.

They need to be protected from humanity.

그런 것들은 인간으로 부터 보호되어야 합니다.

산호는 환상적인 곳이지만 여러분들은 아마 모르실 부분은

They're great places.

But what you probably don't know is in the very deep part of the ocean,

깊은 바다일겁니다. 대양의 아주 깊은 곳 말이죠.

we have volcanic eruptions.

거기엔 화상 폭발도 일어납니다.

Most volcanoes on Earth are at the bottom of the sea --

지구상 대부분은, 그러니가 80%이상의 화산 폭발은

바다의 밑바닥에서 일어납니다. -- 실제로 불길도 치솟죠.

more than 80 percent.

And we actually have fire,

바다 깊은 곳에서 불길이라니요. 지금 바로 가볼까요.

fire deep inside the ocean, going on right now.

All over the world -- in the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean.

전 세계에 걸쳐, 태평양, 대서양, 인도양의

이런 바다 밑바닥에서 바위는 사실 유체로 변합니다.

In this place, the ocean floor, the rocks actually turn to liquid.

그러니까 그것에는 바다 밑바닥 전체의 파동이 일어나지요.

So you actually have waves on the ocean floor.

You'd say nothing could live there, but when we look in detail,

그런 곳에는 아무 것도 살 수 없다고 하시겠지만, 자세히 들여다 보면

거기에도, 지구의 가장 깊고 어두운 그 곳에도 생명은 발견됩니다.

even there, in the deepest, darkest places on Earth, we find life,

which tells us that life really wants to happen.

그것은 생명인란게 정말 존재하고자 하는 의지가 있다는 말이죠.

So, pretty amazing stuff.

굉장히 놀라운 것들이죠.

Every time we go to the bottom of the sea,

바다의 밑바닥에 가볼 때마다

we explore with our submarines, with our robots,

우리는 잠수함에 로보트를 이용해서 탐사하는데

항상 놀라운 것을 보곤합니다.

we see something that's usually surprising,

sometimes it's startling and sometimes revolutionary.

어떤 때는 깜짝 놀랄만한 것도 있고 어떤 때는 혁명적인 것도 있지요.

You see that puddle of water sitting there.

저쪽에 웅덩이 같은 것도 보이죠.

And all around the water there's a little cliff,

물가 어디에든 작은 절벽도 있고

there's a little white sandy beach.

모래가 많은 해변도 있답니다.

We'll get closer, you'll see the beach a little bit better,

좀 더 가까이 가볼까요. 해변의 모습이 좀 더 잘 보이시죠.

some of the waves in that water, down there.

저 아래쪽에 물 속의 파동도 보이실 겁니다.

The thing that's special about this water

여기 이부분에서 특별한 것이 있습니다.

is that it's at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

멕시코 만의 바닥인데요.

So you're sitting inside a submarine,

여러분들은 잠수정에 앉아 창 밖으로

looking out the window at a little pond of water beneath the sea.

바다밑에 있는 작은 연못을 하나 보고 계십니다.

We see ponds, we see lakes, we see rivers --

연못도 있고, 호수도 있고 , 강도 있어요.

in fact, right here is a river at the bottom of the ocean

사실 바로 저기에 대양의 밑바닥에 있는 강도 보입니다.

going from the lower left to the upper right.

왼쪽 아래부터 오른쪽 위까지 가로질러 있죠.

Water is actually flowing through there.

실제로 저기를 따라 물이 흐릅니다.

This totally blew our minds.

이건 사람들의 생각을 완전히 뒤집어 놓는데요: 어떻게 바닥에 이런게 있는걸까요?

How can you have this at the bottom?

You're in the ocean looking at more water.

여러분들은 바다속에서 더 많은 물을 보고 계시는겁니다.

And there's animals that only live in that water.

그리고 저 물속에만 사는 동물도 있어요.

So, the bottom of the ocean --

대양의 바닥입니다. --

I love this map, because it shows in the middle of the ocean,

저는 이 지도를 좋아하는데 여기에는 바다의 중간에 산악 지형이 보입니다.

there's a mountain range.

저 산악 지형은 지구상에서 가장 큰 것이에요.

It's the greatest mountain range on Earth, called the mid-ocean ridge --

해저상 능선이라고 하죠 --

50,000 miles long, and we've hardly had a peek at it.

5만 마일(8만킬로미터)나 됩니다. 그런데는 최고봉이 거의 없어요.

Hardly had a peek at it.

가장 높은 곳을 찾을 수 없습니다.

We find valleys, many thousands of valleys,

계곡은 있어요. 수천개의 계곡이 있는데

larger, wider, deeper than the Grand Canyon.

그랜드 캐년보다 더 크고 넓고 깊은 것들입니다.

We find, as I said, underwater lakes, rivers, waterfalls.

말씀드렸다시피, 강과 폭포도 있고요.

The largest waterfall on the planet

사실 지구상에서 가장 큰 폭포는

is actually under the ocean, up near Iceland.

아이스란드 근처 바닷속에 있습니다.

All that stuff is in that five percent that we've explored.

저런 모든 것들이 인간이 탐사한 5%안에 있는 것들 입니다.

바다와 관련해서 중요한 것은

So the deal about the ocean is that to explore it,

you've got to have technology.

탐사를 위해서는 기술이 필요하다는 것이지요.

Not only technology, but it's not just Dave Gallo

or one person exploring, it's a team of people.

탐험하는게 아닙니다. 여러 사람들이 모인 팀으로 하는거죠.

You've got to have the talent, the team.

재능이 필요합니다. 팀도 있어야 하죠.

You've got to have the technology.

기술도 있어야 하고, 이런 경우는 배도 있는거죠. 아트란티스호에요.

In this case, it's our ship, Atlantis, and the submarine, Alvin.

잠수정도 있어야죠. 앨빈호 입니다.

Inside that submarine -- this is an Alvin launch --

잠수정의 내부에는 -- 이 장면은 앨빈이 탐사에 나서는 장면입니다.

there's three people.

세 사람이 있어야 합니다. 그들은 갑판으로 내려집니다.

They're being wheeled out onto deck.

There's 47 other people,

다른 47명의 사람들이 있고, 배위에서는 이 사람들의

the teamwork on that ship, making sure that these people are okay.

안전을 확보하기 위한 팀웍이 필요합니다.

Everybody in that submarine is thinking one thing right now:

저 잠수정에 잇는 사람들은 모두 지금 한 가지만 생각합니다:

Should I have gone to the bathroom one more time?

화장실에 한번 더 다녀왔어야 했나?

Because you're in there for 10 hours --

왜냐하면 저 안에 10시간을 있어야 하거든요 --

10 hours in that little sphere.

저 작은 원형 물체 안에서 10시간을요.

세 사람이 함께 가지만 주변에는 다른 어느 누구도 없습니다.

Three of you together and nobody is going to be around you.

You go into the water and once you hit the water, it's amazing.

물속으로 들어가 물에 딱 빠지게 되면 정말 대단해요.

There's a lovely color blue that penetrates right inside you.

바로 자신을 파고드는 에쁜 푸른 빛이 거든요.

You don't hear the surface ship anymore,

수표면에 있는 배의 소리는 더 이상 들리지 않습니다.

you hear that pinging of a sonar.

음향탐지기의 탐지음만 들리죠.

If you've got an iPhone you've got sonar on there --

아이폰을 갖고 계시면 거기에 음향탐지기가 있어요. --

똑같은 탐지음이 바닥까지 갔다가 되돌아 옵니다.

it's that same pinging that goes down to the bottom and comes back up.

다이버들이 잠수정이 괜찮은지 바깥에서 확인하고는

Divers check out the sub to make sure the outside is okay,

and then they say "Go,"

"출발"이라고 신호를 보내죠.

and down you go to the bottom of the ocean and it's an amazing trip.

그러면 바다의 바닥까지 내려가는 놀라운 여행이 시작되는 겁니다.

So for two and a half hours, you sink down to the bottom.

두 시간 반에 걸쳐서 바닥까지 내려가는데

And two hours of it is totally pitch black.

그 중 두시간은 칠흑같은 어둠속이에요.

We thought that nothing could live inside that world

여러분들은 바다 밑바닥의 그 셰계에는 아무 것도 살지 않는다고

생각하시겠지만

at the bottom of the ocean.

And when we look, we find some amazing things.

둘러보면, 정말 놀라운 것들을 발견할 수 있어요.

All the way down -- we call it the mid-water --

그 아래까지 내려가도 -- 저희는 맨 위에서 바닥까지를 "중층수"라고 하죠

from the top of the ocean down to the bottom, we find life.

-- 생명을 찾을 수 있습니다.

Whenever we stop and look, we find life.

언제든 멈춰서서 둘러볼 때마다 생명이 발견됩니다.

I'm going to show you some jellies.

제가 여기서 해파리를 좀 보여드리죠.

해파리는 지구에서 절대적으로 가장 대단한 생명체에요.

They're absolutely some of the coolest creatures on Earth.

Look at that thing, just flailing his arms around.

자신의 팔주변으로 흔드는 저걸 보세요

That's like a little lobster.

작은 바다가재같아 보이죠.

That one is like all these animals with their mouths hooked together,

저건 마치 이런 생물체들이 서로 입끼리 서로 물려있는 것 같죠.

저 녀석들이 산호 동물이에요.

the colonial animals.

Some animals are tiny, some can be longer than this stage.

어떤 생물체는 조그맣고 어떤 것들은 이 무대보다도 더 길죠

아주 대단한 녀석들인데 그물로는 잡을 수 없어요.

Just amazing animals.

And you can't collect them with a net --

사람들이 카메라를 들고 저기까지 내려가 바라봐야만 합니다.

we have to go with our cameras and take a look at them.

So every time we go, new species of life.

저희가 내려갈 때마다, 새로운 종이 발견됩니다.

The ocean is full of life.

바다속은 생명체 투성이에요.

And yet the deepest part of the ocean --

그런데 바다에서 가장 깊은 부분은 --

when we go to that mountain range, we find hot springs.

아까 그 산맥 지역에 가면, 온천이 있어요.

우리가 확신하는 것은 이것이 독소가 든 물이라는겁니다.

Now we were sure -- because this is poisonous water,

because it's so deep it would crush the Titanic

여기는 너무 깊어서 여러분들 손안에서 빈 종이컵을

the same way you crush an empty cup in your hand --

부수듯이 타이타닉 호라도 부숴버릴 수 있습니다.

we were sure there would be no life there at all.

사람들은 저런 곳에 생명이 전혀 없을 거라 생각했었죠.

Instead, we find more life and diversity and density

그런데 그 안에는 열대우림에서 보다

than in the tropical rainforest.

더 많은 생명체와 다양한 종을 발견했고 빈도도 높습니다.

So, in one instance, in one peek out the window of the sub,

어떤 때는 잠수정 밖을 흘깃 보기만 해도

we discover something

우리가 지구상 생명체에 대해 생각했던 방식을

that revolutionizes the way we think about life on Earth;

완전히 뒤바꿀만한 것을 발견하게 됩니다.

and that is, you don't always have to have sunlight

다시 말해, 생명이 존재하기 위해서 반드시 햇빛이 있어야 하는건 아니라는 겁니다.

to get life going.

There's big animals down there too, some that look familiar.

거기에는 커다란 생명체도 있습니다. -- 어떤 것은 익숙해 보이기도 하죠.

저 녀석은 덤보라고 불리는데요. 제가 좋아하는 녀석이죠. 덤보는 대단해요.

That guy's called Dumbo. I love him. Dumbo's great.

This guy -- oh man, I wish I had more footage of this.

이 녀석은, 아~ 저 녀석 사진이 더 있었으면 좋겠네요.

We're trying to get an expedition together to go look at this

저희는 이 녀석을 보려고 함께 탐사를 시도하고 있습니다.

and maybe in a year we'll have that.

아마 1년내로 그럴 수 있을겁니다.

In the darkness of the deep sea, he's got glowing tentacles,

깊은 바다의 어둠속에서 이 녀석은 발광 촉수를 가지고 있죠.

so if I'm coming at you like him, I put my arms out in the darkness

제가 이 녀석이 하듯 어둠 속에서 이렇게 팔을 벌리고 여러분들께 다가가도

여러분에게 보이는 것은 이런 작게 빛나는 것들이 전부에요.

so all you see are little glowing things over here.

Meanwhile, I'm coming at you.

그러면서 다가가는 거죠.

When he wants to escape,

도망갈 때는 꼬리쪽에 눈처럼 보이는

he's got these glowing pods on his butt that look like eyes.

빛나는 돌기를 사용하죠.

Glowing eyes on his butt. How cool is that?

엉덩이에 빛나는 눈을 가진거죠. 대단하죠?

Just an amazing animal.

정말로 놀라운, 놀라운 동물이에요. (웃음)

"Vampire" squid, because when it gets protective,

뱀파이어 오징어는, 방어적이 되면,

it pulls this black cape over its whole body,

이런 검은 망토같은 것으로 자신의 몸 전체를 덮어서

and curls up into a ball.

공처럼 오그라들어요. 정말 놀라운 동물이죠.

Outrageous animal.

This ship, "The Ship of Dreams" --

"꿈의 배"라고 불리는 이 배는 -- 100여년전 어느 4월에

a hundred years ago this coming April,

이 배는 뉴욕에 도착하도록 되어 있었죠.

this ship was supposed to show up in New York.

It's the Titanic.

타이타닉호 입니다. 제가 지난 해에 이 탐사 작업을 공동으로 지휘했습니다.

I co-led an expedition out there last year.

저희는 이 배에 대해서 상당히 많은 사실을 알게 됐어요.

We are learning so much about that ship.

The Titanic is an interesting place for biology,

타이타닉 호는 생물학적으로 매우 흥미로운 장소인데

because animals are moving in to live on the Titanic.

왜냐하면 동물들이 그 안에서 살려고 모여들기 때문이죠.

Microbes are actually eating the hull of the Titanic.

사실 미생물들이 이 배의 표면을 먹어치우고 있지요.

That's where Jack was king of the world there on the bow of the Titanic.

여기가 잭이 타이타닉호의 선두에 올라 세상의 왕이 되었던 장소에요.

저희가 작업을 잘했죠? 저를 흥분하게 만든건

So we're doing real good.

And what's exciting to me is that we're making a virtual Titanic,

언젠간는 가상의 타이타닉호를 만들어서 조이스틱과 헤드폰을 가지고

so you can sit there at home with your joystick and your headset on,

편안하게 둘러볼 수 있게 되리라는 겁니다.

and you can actually explore the Titanic for yourself.

그러면 여러분 스스로 타이타닉을 탐사해 보실 수 있겠지요.

That's what we want to do, make these virtual worlds,

그런게 저희가 하고 싶은 일입니다.

-- 이런 가상의 세계를 만들면, 그건 데이빗 갤로나

so it's not Dave Gallo or someone else exploring the world; it's you.

다른 누군가가 세상을 탐험하는 것이 아니라, 여러분들,

You explore it for yourself.

바로 여러분들이 직접 탐사를 하시는게 되겠죠.

So here's the bottom line:

요점은 이겁니다.

The oceans are unexplored

바다는 탐사되지 않았고

and I can't begin to tell you how important that is,

지금 제가 탐사가 얼마나 중요한지 말씀드는 것을 시작하지는 못하죠.

because they're important to us.

왜냐하면, 그건 우리에게 중요한 일이거든요.

Seven billion people live on this planet

70억명의 사람들이 이 별에 살고 있습니다.

and all of us are impacted by the sea,

우리 모두는 바다에 영향을 받고 살지요. 왜냐하면 바다는

because the oceans control the air you breathe, the water you drink,

우리가 숨쉬는 공기와 여러분들이 마시는 물,

the food you eat.

그리고 먹는 음식을 조절하니까요.

All those are controlled in some way by the ocean,

그런 모든 것들이 어떤 방식이든 바다에 의해 조절됩니다.

이 영역은 인간이 아직 탐사를 끝낸 영역이 아니에요.

and this is a thing that we haven't even explored --

five percent.

The thing I want to leave you with is,

in that five percent, I showed you some cool stuff.

There's a lot more cool stuff --

저희가 매일 탐사를 위해 뛰어드는 바다에는 대단한 것들이

every dive we go on in the ocean, we find something new about the sea.

훨씬 더 많아요. 저희는 바다에 대해 뭔가 새로운 발견합니다.

So what's in that other 95 percent?

그럼, 나머지 95%에는 뭐가 있을까요?

Did we get the exciting stuff or is there more out there?

흥미로운 것을 보셨나요? 아니면 더 많은 뭐가 있을까요?

And I'm here to tell you that the ocean is full of surprises.

제가 말씀드리는 것은 바다는 수많은 경이로움으로 꽉차 있다는 점입니다.

There's a quote I love by Marcel Proust:

제가 좋아하는 마르셀 프루스트의 문구의 있어요:

"The true voyage of exploration is not so much in seeking new landscapes,"

"진정한 탐험의 항해는 새로운 풍경을 찾는 것이 아니다"

which we do,

그건 사실 우리가 하고는 있죠.

"그 대신 새로운 시각을 찾는데 있다"

"but in having new eyes."

And so I hope today, by showing you some of this,

제가 이런 것들을 보여드림으로써,

it's given you some new eyes about this planet,

이런것이 여러분들께 이 행성에 대한 새로운 시각을 드렸기를 희망합니다.

그리고 여러분들이 처음으로 지구에 대해 다르게 생각해 보셨기를 바랍니다.

and for the first time, I want you to think about it differently.
