PASSIVE VOICE | Learn How To Change From Active to Passive Voice in English Grammar

In today's basic English video,

I’m going  to be teaching you about the active and passive voice in English.

سأعلمك عن الصوت المبني للمجهول والمجهول في اللغة الإنجليزية.

Now many of  you know how to use the active voice,

يعرف الكثير منكم الآن كيفية استخدام الصوت النشط ،

but you might have a tough time switching over using the passive voice.

ولكن قد تواجه صعوبة في التبديل باستخدام الصوت المبني للمجهول.

It's okay. No worries. 

حسنا. لا شكر على واجب.

So before we can start switching our  sentences from active to passive,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

من المهم جدًا بالنسبة لنا أن نفهم الأجزاء المختلفة من الجملة.

Let's look at our board.

دعونا نلقي نظرة على لوحتنا.

We have a sentence written, ‘The boy opened the door.’

لدينا جملة مكتوبة ، "الفتى فتح الباب".

This is an example of an active sentence

هذا مثال على جملة نشطة

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

تتبع عادةً نمط فعل الفاعل مفعول به.

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’. But what did the boy do? 

موضوعنا "الفاعل" هو "الصبي". لكن ماذا فعل الصبي؟

‘The boy opened…’ ‘open’ is the example of an action. 

"الفتى فتح ..." "فتح" هو مثال على العمل.

What did the boy open? The boy opened the door. 

ماذا فتح الصبي؟ فتح الصبي الباب.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object. 

"الباب" هو المستقبل أو الشيء المباشر.

So again, before we can really switch  our sentences from active to the passive, 

لذا مرة أخرى ، قبل أن نتمكن من تبديل جملنا من المبني للمجهول إلى المبني للمجهول ،

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

من المهم جدًا بالنسبة لنا أن نفهم الأجزاء المختلفة من الجملة.

And the more that we understand  different parts of a sentence, 

وكلما زاد فهمنا لأجزاء مختلفة من الجملة ،

the easier it will be to switching  active sentences to passive sentences. 

سيكون من الأسهل تبديل الجمل النشطة إلى الجمل المبنية للمجهول.

So now let's switch our active  sentence over to a passive one. 

فلننتقل الآن إلى جملة سلبية.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

ها هي جملتنا من قبل: "الفتى فتح الباب".

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

الآن ، لدينا ، "فتح الصبي الباب".

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences, they follow the subject verb object pattern. 

كما ذكرت سابقًا ، بالنسبة للجمل النشطة ، فإنها تتبع نمط مفعول به فعل مفعول به.

Well it's a little bit different  from the passive sentence. 

حسنًا ، إنها مختلفة قليلاً عن الجملة المبنية للمجهول.

Before we had the receiver  at the end of the sentence, 

قبل أن يكون لدينا المتلقي في نهاية الجملة ،

now we have the receiver in  the beginning of the sentence. 

لدينا الآن جهاز الاستقبال في بداية الجملة.

‘The door was opened…’ Wow. Our verb is the same. 

"فُتح الباب ..." واو. فعلنا هو نفسه.

Or the action is the same. But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on. 

أو العمل هو نفسه. لكن لدينا فعل "to be" مضاف.

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb  plus the past participle of ‘open’. 

"تم فتحه" هو فعلنا "to be" بالإضافة إلى النعت السابق لـ "open".

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

الآن ، يمكن أن تكون هذه الأفعال أيضًا.

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

لكننا سنستخدم كلمة "كان".

And this will change depending on the  tense that we're using in our sentence. 

وسيتغير هذا اعتمادًا على الزمن الذي نستخدمه في جملتنا.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

لدينا أيضًا "الباب يفتح من قبل الصبي".

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

الآن ، سبب وضعنا بين قوسين هو أننا في

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

بعض الأحيان لا نحتاج إلى معرفة من هو "الفاعل".

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’. And this ‘by’ helps us understand that  

بهذا المعنى ، فإن الصبي هو "الفاعل". وهذا "بواسطة" يساعدنا على فهم أن

it is the boy who is opening the door.

الصبي هو الذي يفتح الباب.

Let's look at some more examples.

لنلقِ نظرة على بعض الأمثلة الأخرى.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.  

حسنًا ، لدينا الآن أمثلة على الجمل النشطة التي سنقوم بتغييرها إلى جمل سلبية.

Let's look at our first one.

دعونا نلقي نظرة على أول واحد لدينا.

‘The woman helped the man.’

"المرأة ساعدت الرجل".

We learned earlier that whenever we're  changing active sentences to passive sentences, 

لقد تعلمنا سابقًا أنه كلما قمنا بتغيير الجمل النشطة إلى جمل سلبية ،

we are going to need to switch  our doer and our receiver. 

سنحتاج إلى تبديل الفاعل والمستقبل.

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is  going to switch places with the receiver,  

في هذا الشخص ، الفاعل ، وهو المرأة ، سيتبادل الأماكن مع المتلقي ،

who is the man, because now the man is  the focus of the sentence and will now  

وهو الرجل ، لأن الرجل الآن هو محور الجملة

come to the front - the man.

وسيأتي الآن إلى المقدمة - الرجل.

But what's our action?

لكن ما هو عملنا؟

Well in our sentence before,  our action is ‘helped’. 

حسنًا ، في جملتنا السابقة ، عملنا "ساعد".

We're going to now change this  to the past participle which,  

سنقوم الآن بتغيير هذا إلى الفاعل الماضي الذي ،

luckily for us the past participle,  is ‘helped’.

لحسن الحظ بالنسبة لنا ، النعت الماضي ، هو `` ساعد ''.

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

الآن ، سنضيف فعل "to be" وهو "كان".

So the man was helped. By whom?

لذلك تم مساعدة الرجل. بواسطة من؟

The woman.

المرأة.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

وهو الآن في نهاية الجملة.

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

ساعد الرجل من قبل المرأة.

Let's look at our next one.

دعونا نلقي نظرة على المرحلة التالية.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

"القط عض الفتاة".

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

مثلما تعلمنا من قبل ، سنقوم بتبديل الفاعل والمستقبل.

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

حتى الآن الفتاة في مقدمة الجملة.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit? 

"الفتاة ... بت ..." النعت الماضي للبت؟

This one's a little bit different.

هذا مختلف قليلا.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

ستتغير 'bit' إلى 'bitten'

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

عندما نضيف 'to be' فعل '،

‘The girl was bitten...'

' تم عض الفتاة ... '

By what?

بماذا؟

The cat.

القط.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

"الفتاة عضتها القطة."

‘The knife cut the bread.’ 

قطع السكين الخبز.

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

"قطع الخبز بالسكين".

I think we're getting this.

أعتقد أننا حصلنا على هذا.

‘The student answered the question.’

أجاب الطالب على السؤال.

‘The question was answered by the student.’

"تمت الإجابة على السؤال من قبل الطالب".

In our last one, ‘The teacher taught the class.’ 

في آخر درس لدينا ، "المعلم يعلم الفصل."

‘The class was taught by the teacher.’

"تم تدريس الفصل من قبل المعلم."

Wow. I think we're getting better.

Let's move on.

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

لذلك قمنا في وقت سابق بتغيير بعض الجمل من صيغة المبني للمعلوم إلى المبني للمجهول.

Well now, let's practice recognizing sentences in the active and passive voice.

حسنًا الآن ، لنتدرب على التعرف على الجمل في صيغة المبني للمجهول وصوت المبني للمجهول.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

أول واحد ، "ضرب الخفاش الكرة."

hmm,

حسنًا ،

well, I can see that the doer of my action

أستطيع أن أرى أن فاعل عملي

is the ‘bat’.

هو "الخفاش".

What did the bat do?

ماذا فعل الخفاش؟

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’ 

العمل هو "ضرب". "ضرب الخفافيش ..."

What's the receiver?

ما هو المتلقي؟

‘the ball’

"الكرة"

‘The bat hit the ball.’

ضرب الخفاش الكرة.

Oh, this is definitely

أوه ، هذه بالتأكيد

a sentence written in the active voice. 

جملة مكتوبة بالصوت النشط.

‘The food was cooked by the man.’

"الطعام طهيه الرجل".

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

الآن ، هناك بعض القرائن المهمة في هذه الجملة.

‘…by the man.’ Oh, yeah. 

"... من قبل الرجل". أوه نعم.

That's a clue.

هذا دليل.

Also, ‘was cooked’.

أيضا ، "تم طهيه".

Well here's our past participle  and our ‘to be’ verb. 

حسنًا ، هذا هو الفاعل الماضي وفعلنا "ليكون".

This sentence, for sure, is a  sentence written in the passive voice. 

هذه الجملة ، بالتأكيد ، جملة مكتوبة بالصوت المبني للمجهول.

‘The floor was cleaned.’

"تم تنظيف الأرضية."

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

حسنًا ، أرى أن لدي فعل "أن أكون" كان ".

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

والماضي "تنظيف".

But it seems like I’m missing something.

لكن يبدو أنني أفتقد شيئًا ما.

I have the receiver but not the doer.

لدي المتلقي ولكن ليس الفاعل.

It's okay.

حسنا.

Like we mentioned before, for some  sentences, you may not have the doer. 

كما ذكرنا من قبل ، في بعض الجمل ، قد لا يكون لديك الفاعل.

This is an example of a passive  sentence without the doer. 

هذا مثال على جملة سلبية بدون فاعل.

‘The essay about the economy  was written by the student.’ 

"المقالة المتعلقة بالاقتصاد كتبها الطالب."

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

الآن ، كل شيء على مايرام. أعلم أن هذه جملة كبيرة.

But I know we can do it.

لكنني أعلم أنه يمكننا القيام بذلك.

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

لأن "بوم" "من قبل الطالب".

There's our clue.

هناك دليل لدينا.

Also ‘was written’.

أيضا "كان مكتوبا".

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

لدينا الفاعل الماضي وفعلنا "ليكون".

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

هذه جملة مكتوبة بصوت المبني للمجهول.

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

وآخر واحد لدينا. نحن على وشك الانتهاء. ابقى معي.

‘The best team won the football game.’ Good job team. 

"أفضل فريق فاز بلعبة كرة القدم." احسنتم يافريق.

Our team is our doer.

فريقنا هو الفاعل لدينا.

What did the team do?

ماذا فعل الفريق؟

What's the action?

ما هو العمل؟

The team won.

فاز الفريق.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

ماذا ربحوا؟ لقد ربحوا مباراة كرة القدم.

This is definitely a sentence  written in the active voice. 

هذه بالتأكيد جملة مكتوبة بالصوت النشط.

Ah, good job. That's some good practicing - recognizing  

آه ، عمل جيد. هذا بعض التدريب الجيد - التعرف

sentences written in the active and passive voice.

على الجمل المكتوبة بالصوت المبني للمجهول والمجهول.

Now, let's move on.

الآن ، دعنا ننتقل.

You now have a basic understanding  of active and passive voice. 

لديك الآن فهم أساسي للصوت المبني للمجهول والصوت المبني للمجهول.

But you're not done yet.

لكنك لم تنته بعد.

Because you have homework.

لأن لديك واجب منزلي.

You are going to change this active voice  

ستقوم بتغيير هذه الجملة الصوتية النشطة

sentence into a passive one.

‘Mike taught the passive voice.’
