PASSIVE VOICE | Learn How To Change From Active to Passive Voice in English Grammar

I’m going  to be teaching you about the active and passive voice in English.

Now many of  you know how to use the active voice,

but you might have a tough time switching over using the passive voice.

So before we can start switching our  sentences from active to passive,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence.

Let's look at our board.

Veamos nuestro tablero.

We have a sentence written, ‘The boy opened the door.’

Tenemos una oración escrita, 'El niño abrió la puerta'.

This is an example of an active sentence

Este es un ejemplo de una oración activa

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

que generalmente sigue el patrón del sujeto verbo objeto.

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’. But what did the boy do? 

Nuestro sujeto, el 'hacedor', es 'el niño'. Pero, ¿qué hizo el niño?

‘The boy opened…’ ‘open’ is the example of an action. 

'El niño abrió...' 'abrir' es el ejemplo de una acción.

What did the boy open? The boy opened the door. 

¿Qué abrió el niño? El chico abrió la puerta.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object. 

'la puerta' es el receptor o el objeto directo.

So again, before we can really switch  our sentences from active to the passive, 

De nuevo, antes de que podamos realmente cambiar nuestras oraciones de activa a pasiva,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

es muy importante que entendamos las diferentes partes de una oración.

And the more that we understand  different parts of a sentence, 

Y cuanto más entendamos las diferentes partes de una oración,

the easier it will be to switching  active sentences to passive sentences. 

más fácil será cambiar oraciones activas a oraciones pasivas.

So now let's switch our active  sentence over to a passive one. 

Así que ahora cambiemos nuestra oración activa a una pasiva.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

Esta es nuestra frase de antes: 'El niño abrió la puerta'.

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

Ahora, tenemos, 'La puerta fue abierta por el niño.'

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences, they follow the subject verb object pattern. 

Como mencioné anteriormente, las oraciones activas siguen el patrón sujeto verbo objeto.

Well it's a little bit different  from the passive sentence. 

Bueno, es un poco diferente de la oración pasiva.

Before we had the receiver  at the end of the sentence, 

Antes teníamos el receptor al final de la oración,

now we have the receiver in  the beginning of the sentence. 

ahora tenemos el receptor al principio de la oración.

‘The door was opened…’ Wow. Our verb is the same. 

'La puerta se abrió...' Wow. Nuestro verbo es el mismo.

Or the action is the same. But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on. 

O la acción es la misma. Pero tenemos un verbo 'to be' agregado.

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb  plus the past participle of ‘open’. 

'fue abierto' es nuestro verbo 'ser' más el participio pasado de 'abierto'.

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

Ahora, también podrían ser estos verbos 'ser'.

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

Pero, vamos a usar 'was'.

And this will change depending on the  tense that we're using in our sentence. 

Y esto cambiará dependiendo del tiempo que estemos usando en nuestra oración.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

También tenemos 'la puerta siendo abierta por el niño'.

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

Ahora, la razón por la que lo tenemos entre paréntesis es porque

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

a veces no necesitamos saber quién es el 'hacedor'.

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’. And this ‘by’ helps us understand that  

En este sentido, el niño es el 'hacedor'. Y este 'por' nos ayuda a comprender que

it is the boy who is opening the door.

es el niño quien abre la puerta.

Let's look at some more examples.

Veamos algunos ejemplos más.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.  

Bien, ahora tenemos ejemplos de oraciones activas que vamos a cambiar a oraciones pasivas.

Let's look at our first one.

Veamos nuestro primero.

‘The woman helped the man.’

La mujer ayudó al hombre.

We learned earlier that whenever we're  changing active sentences to passive sentences, 

Aprendimos anteriormente que cada vez que cambiamos oraciones activas a oraciones pasivas,

we are going to need to switch  our doer and our receiver. 

necesitaremos cambiar nuestro hacedor y nuestro receptor.

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is  going to switch places with the receiver,  

En este, el hacedor, que es la mujer, va a cambiar de lugar con el receptor,

who is the man, because now the man is  the focus of the sentence and will now  

que es el hombre, porque ahora el hombre es el foco de la oración y ahora pasará

come to the front - the man.

al frente: el hombre.

But what's our action?

Pero, ¿cuál es nuestra acción?

Well in our sentence before,  our action is ‘helped’. 

Bueno, en nuestra oración anterior, nuestra acción es 'ayudada'.

We're going to now change this  to the past participle which,  

Ahora vamos a cambiar esto al participio pasado que,

luckily for us the past participle,  is ‘helped’.

afortunadamente para nosotros, el participio pasado es 'ayudado'.

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

Ahora, vamos a agregar nuestro verbo 'to be' que es 'was'.

So the man was helped. By whom?

Entonces el hombre fue ayudado. ¿Por quién?

The woman.

La mujer.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

Que ahora está al final de la oración.

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

'El hombre fue ayudado por la mujer.'

Let's look at our next one.

Veamos nuestro próximo.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

El gato mordió a la niña.

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

Tal como aprendimos antes, vamos a cambiar nuestro hacedor y nuestro receptor.

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

Así que ahora la niña está al frente de la oración.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit? 

'La niña... mordió...' ¿El participio pasado de poco?

This one's a little bit different.

Este es un poco diferente.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

'bit' va a cambiar a 'bitten'

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

Cuando agregamos nuestro verbo 'to be' 'was',

‘The girl was bitten...'

'The girl was bitted...'

By what?

¿Por qué?

The cat.

El gato.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

La niña fue mordida por el gato.

‘The knife cut the bread.’

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

'El pan fue cortado por el cuchillo.'

I think we're getting this.

Creo que estamos consiguiendo esto.

‘The student answered the question.’

'El estudiante respondió a la pregunta.'

‘The question was answered by the student.’

'La pregunta fue respondida por el estudiante.'

In our last one, ‘The teacher taught the class.’ 

En el último, 'El maestro enseñó la clase'.

‘The class was taught by the teacher.’

'La clase fue impartida por el profesor.'

Wow. I think we're getting better.

Guau. Creo que estamos mejorando.

Let's move on.

Vamonos.

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

Así que antes cambiamos algunas oraciones de la voz activa a la voz pasiva.

Well now, let's practice recognizing sentences in the active and passive voice.

Bueno, ahora, practiquemos el reconocimiento de oraciones en voz activa y pasiva.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

Nuestro primero, 'El bate golpeó la pelota'.

hmm,

hmm,

well, I can see that the doer of my action

bueno, puedo ver que el autor de mi acción

is the ‘bat’.

es el 'murciélago'.

What did the bat do?

¿Qué hizo el murciélago?

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’ 

La acción es 'golpear'. 'El bate golpeó...'

What's the receiver?

¿Qué es el receptor?

‘the ball’

'la pelota'

‘The bat hit the ball.’

'El bate golpeó la pelota.'

Oh, this is definitely

Oh, esta es definitivamente

a sentence written in the active voice. 

una oración escrita en voz activa.

‘The food was cooked by the man.’

La comida la cocinó el hombre.

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

Ahora, hay algunas pistas importantes en esta oración.

‘…by the man.’ Oh, yeah. 

'... por el hombre.' Oh sí.

That's a clue.

Esa es una pista.

Also, ‘was cooked’.

Además, 'fue cocinado'.

Well here's our past participle  and our ‘to be’ verb. 

Bueno, aquí está nuestro participio pasado y nuestro verbo 'to be'.

This sentence, for sure, is a  sentence written in the passive voice. 

Esta oración, por supuesto, es una oración escrita en voz pasiva.

‘The floor was cleaned.’

Se limpió el suelo.

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

Bien, veo que tengo mi verbo 'ser' 'era'.

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

Y mi participio pasado 'limpió'.

But it seems like I’m missing something.

Pero parece que me estoy perdiendo algo.

I have the receiver but not the doer.

Tengo el receptor pero no el hacedor.

It's okay.

Está bien.

Like we mentioned before, for some  sentences, you may not have the doer. 

Como mencionamos antes, para algunas oraciones, es posible que no tenga el hacedor.

This is an example of a passive  sentence without the doer. 

Este es un ejemplo de una oración pasiva sin el hacedor.

‘The essay about the economy  was written by the student.’ 

'El ensayo sobre la economía fue escrito por el estudiante.'

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

Ahora, está bien. Sé que esta es una frase grande.

But I know we can do it.

Pero sé que podemos hacerlo.

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

Porque “boom” 'por el estudiante'.

There's our clue.

Ahí está nuestra pista.

Also ‘was written’.

También 'fue escrito'.

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

Tenemos nuestro participio pasado y nuestro verbo 'ser'.

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

Esta es una oración escrita en voz pasiva.

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

Y nuestro último. Casi estámos allí. Quédate conmigo.

‘The best team won the football game.’ Good job team. 

El mejor equipo ganó el partido de fútbol. Buen trabajo equipo.

Our team is our doer.

Nuestro equipo es nuestro hacedor.

What did the team do?

¿Qué hizo el equipo?

What's the action?

¿Cuál es la acción?

The team won.

El equipo ganó.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

¿Qué ganaron? Ganaron el partido de fútbol.

This is definitely a sentence  written in the active voice. 

Esta es definitivamente una oración escrita en voz activa.

Ah, good job. That's some good practicing - recognizing  

Buen trabajo. Esa es una buena práctica: reconocer

sentences written in the active and passive voice.

Now, let's move on.

You now have a basic understanding  of active and passive voice.

But you're not done yet.

You are going to change this active voice
