PASSIVE VOICE | Learn How To Change From Active to Passive Voice in English Grammar

In today's basic English video,

I’m going  to be teaching you about the active and passive voice in English.

je vais vous apprendre la voix active et passive en anglais.

Now many of  you know how to use the active voice,

Maintenant, beaucoup d'entre vous savent utiliser la voix active,

but you might have a tough time switching over using the passive voice.

mais vous aurez peut-être du mal à passer à la voix passive.

It's okay. No worries.

So before we can start switching our  sentences from active to passive, 

Donc, avant de pouvoir commencer à passer nos phrases de l'actif au passif,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

il est très important pour nous de comprendre les différentes parties d'une phrase.

Let's look at our board.

Regardons notre tableau.

We have a sentence written, ‘The boy opened the door.’

Nous avons une phrase écrite : "Le garçon a ouvert la porte".

This is an example of an active sentence

Ceci est un exemple de phrase active

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

qui suit généralement le modèle de l'objet verbal sujet.

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’. But what did the boy do? 

Notre sujet, le « faiseur », est « le garçon ». Mais qu'a fait le garçon ?

‘The boy opened…’ ‘open’ is the example of an action. 

« Le garçon a ouvert… » « Ouvrir » est l'exemple d'une action.

What did the boy open? The boy opened the door. 

Qu'est-ce que le garçon a ouvert ? Le garçon ouvrit la porte.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object. 

"la porte" est le récepteur ou l'objet direct.

So again, before we can really switch  our sentences from active to the passive, 

Donc, encore une fois, avant de pouvoir vraiment passer nos phrases de l'actif au passif,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

il est très important pour nous de comprendre les différentes parties d'une phrase.

And the more that we understand  different parts of a sentence, 

Et plus nous comprenons les différentes parties d'une phrase

the easier it will be to switching  active sentences to passive sentences. 

, plus il sera facile de passer des phrases actives aux phrases passives.

So now let's switch our active  sentence over to a passive one. 

Alors maintenant, transformons notre phrase active en une phrase passive.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

Voici notre phrase d'avant : "Le garçon a ouvert la porte".

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

Maintenant, nous avons : "La porte a été ouverte par le garçon".

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences, they follow the subject verb object pattern. 

Comme je l'ai mentionné plus tôt, pour les phrases actives, elles suivent le modèle objet verbe sujet.

Well it's a little bit different  from the passive sentence. 

Eh bien, c'est un peu différent de la phrase passive.

Before we had the receiver  at the end of the sentence, 

Avant, nous avions le récepteur à la fin de la phrase,

now we have the receiver in  the beginning of the sentence. 

nous avons maintenant le récepteur au début de la phrase.

‘The door was opened…’ Wow. Our verb is the same. 

‘La porte a été ouverte…’ Wow. Notre verbe est le même.

Or the action is the same. But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on. 

Ou l'action est la même. Mais nous avons ajouté un verbe "être".

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb  plus the past participle of ‘open’. 

‘was open’ est notre verbe ‘to be’ plus le participe passé de ‘open’.

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

Maintenant, cela pourrait aussi être ces verbes "être".

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

Mais, nous allons utiliser "était".

And this will change depending on the  tense that we're using in our sentence. 

Et cela changera en fonction du temps que nous utilisons dans notre phrase.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

Nous avons aussi "la porte qui est ouverte par le garçon".

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

Maintenant, la raison pour laquelle nous l'avons mis entre parenthèses est que

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

parfois nous n'avons pas besoin de savoir qui est "l'auteur".

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’. And this ‘by’ helps us understand that  

En ce sens, le garçon est le « faiseur ». Et ce "par" nous aide à comprendre que

it is the boy who is opening the door.

c'est le garçon qui ouvre la porte.

Let's look at some more examples.

Regardons quelques exemples supplémentaires.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.  

OK, nous avons maintenant des exemples de phrases actives que nous allons transformer en phrases passives.

Let's look at our first one.

Regardons notre premier.

‘The woman helped the man.’

"La femme a aidé l'homme."

We learned earlier that whenever we're  changing active sentences to passive sentences, 

Nous avons appris plus tôt que chaque fois que nous changeons des phrases actives en phrases passives,

we are going to need to switch  our doer and our receiver. 

nous allons devoir changer notre auteur et notre récepteur.

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is  going to switch places with the receiver,  

Dans celui-ci, l'auteur, qui est la femme, va changer de place avec le récepteur,

who is the man, because now the man is  the focus of the sentence and will now  

qui est l'homme, car maintenant l'homme est le centre de la phrase et va maintenant

come to the front - the man.

venir au premier plan - l'homme.

But what's our action?

Mais quelle est notre action ?

Well in our sentence before,  our action is ‘helped’. 

Eh bien, dans notre phrase précédente, notre action est "aidé".

We're going to now change this  to the past participle which,  

Nous allons maintenant changer cela au participe passé qui,

luckily for us the past participle,  is ‘helped’.

heureusement pour nous le participe passé, est "aidé".

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

Maintenant, nous allons ajouter notre verbe "être" qui est "était".

So the man was helped. By whom?

L'homme a donc été aidé. Par qui?

The woman.

La femme.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

Qui est maintenant à la fin de la phrase.

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

"L'homme a été aidé par la femme."

Let's look at our next one.

Regardons notre prochain.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

"Le chat a mordu la fille."

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

Tout comme nous l'avons appris auparavant, nous allons échanger notre auteur et notre receveur.

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

Alors maintenant, la fille est au début de la phrase.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit? 

‘La fille… bit…’ Le participe passé de bit ?

This one's a little bit different.

Celui-ci est un peu différent.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

'bit' va changer en 'bitten'

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

Lorsque nous ajoutons notre verbe 'to be' 'was',

‘The girl was bitten...'

'The girl was bitten...'

By what?

Par quoi ?

The cat.

Le chat.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

"La fille a été mordue par le chat."

‘The knife cut the bread.’ 

"Le couteau a coupé le pain."

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

"Le pain a été coupé par le couteau."

I think we're getting this.

Je pense que nous comprenons cela.

‘The student answered the question.’

"L'élève a répondu à la question." "L'élève a répondu à la question."

‘The question was answered by the student.’

In our last one, ‘The teacher taught the class.’ 

‘The class was taught by the teacher.’

Wow. I think we're getting better.

Je pense que nous nous améliorons.

Let's move on.

Allons-nous en.

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

Donc, plus tôt, nous avons changé certaines phrases de la voix active à la voix passive.

Well now, let's practice recognizing sentences in the active and passive voice.

Eh bien maintenant, pratiquons la reconnaissance de phrases à la voix active et passive.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

Notre premier, "La chauve-souris a frappé la balle".

hmm,

hmm,

well, I can see that the doer of my action

eh bien, je peux voir que l'auteur de mon action

is the ‘bat’.

est la "chauve-souris".

What did the bat do?

Qu'est-ce que la chauve-souris a fait?

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’ 

L'action est "touchée". "La chauve-souris a frappé…"

What's the receiver?

Quel est le receveur ?

‘the ball’

'la balle'

‘The bat hit the ball.’

'La chauve-souris a frappé la balle.'

Oh, this is definitely

Oh, c'est définitivement

a sentence written in the active voice. 

une phrase écrite à la voix active.

‘The food was cooked by the man.’

"La nourriture a été préparée par l'homme."

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

Maintenant, il y a de gros indices dans cette phrase.

‘…by the man.’ Oh, yeah. 

‘… par l’homme.’ Oh, ouais.

That's a clue.

C'est un indice.

Also, ‘was cooked’.

Aussi, "était cuit".

Well here's our past participle  and our ‘to be’ verb. 

Eh bien, voici notre participe passé et notre verbe "être".

This sentence, for sure, is a  sentence written in the passive voice. 

Cette phrase, bien sûr, est une phrase écrite à la voix passive.

‘The floor was cleaned.’

« Le sol a été nettoyé. »

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

D'accord, donc je vois que j'ai mon verbe « être » « était ».

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

Et mon participe passé "nettoyé".

But it seems like I’m missing something.

Mais il me semble qu'il me manque quelque chose.

I have the receiver but not the doer.

J'ai le receveur mais pas l'auteur.

It's okay.

C'est bon.

Like we mentioned before, for some  sentences, you may not have the doer. 

Comme nous l'avons mentionné précédemment, pour certaines phrases, vous n'avez peut-être pas l'auteur.

This is an example of a passive  sentence without the doer. 

Ceci est un exemple de phrase passive sans l'auteur.

‘The essay about the economy  was written by the student.’ 

"La dissertation sur l'économie a été écrite par l'étudiant."

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

Maintenant, ça va. Je sais que c'est une grosse phrase.

But I know we can do it.

Mais je sais que nous pouvons le faire.

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

Parce que "boom" "par l'étudiant".

There's our clue.

Voilà notre indice.

Also ‘was written’.

Aussi « a été écrit ».

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

Nous avons notre participe passé et notre verbe "être".

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

C'est une phrase écrite à la voix passive.

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

Et notre dernier. Nous y sommes presque. Restez avec moi.

‘The best team won the football game.’ Good job team. 

"La meilleure équipe a gagné le match de football." Bon travail d'équipe.

Our team is our doer.

Notre équipe est notre faiseur.

What did the team do?

Qu'a fait l'équipe ?

What's the action?

Quelle est l'action ?

The team won.

L'équipe a gagné.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

Qu'ont-ils gagné ? Ils ont gagné le match de football.

This is definitely a sentence  written in the active voice. 

Il s'agit bien d'une phrase écrite à la voix active.

Ah, good job. That's some good practicing - recognizing  

Ah, bon travail. C'est une bonne pratique - reconnaître des

sentences written in the active and passive voice.

phrases écrites à la voix active et passive.

Now, let's move on.

Maintenant, passons à autre chose.

You now have a basic understanding  of active and passive voice. 

Vous avez maintenant une compréhension de base de la voix active et passive.

But you're not done yet.

Mais vous n'avez pas encore fini.

Because you have homework.

Parce que tu as des devoirs.

You are going to change this active voice  

Vous allez transformer cette

sentence into a passive one.

phrase à voix active en une phrase passive.

‘Mike taught the passive voice.’

"Mike a enseigné la voix passive."

Again, change this sentence into a passive voice  sentence and write it in the comments below.
