PASSIVE VOICE | Learn How To Change From Active to Passive Voice in English Grammar

I’m going  to be teaching you about the active and passive voice in English.

Now many of  you know how to use the active voice,

but you might have a tough time switching over using the passive voice.

So before we can start switching our  sentences from active to passive,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence.

Let's look at our board.

We have a sentence written, ‘The boy opened the door.’

Kami memiliki kalimat yang tertulis, 'Anak itu membuka pintu.'

This is an example of an active sentence

Ini adalah contoh kalimat aktif

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

yang biasanya mengikuti pola subject verb object.

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’. But what did the boy do? 

Subjek kami 'pelaku' adalah 'anak laki-laki'. Tapi apa yang dilakukan bocah itu?

‘The boy opened…’ ‘open’ is the example of an action. 

'Anak itu membuka ...' 'membuka' adalah contoh dari suatu tindakan.

What did the boy open? The boy opened the door.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object. 

'pintu' adalah penerima atau objek langsung.

So again, before we can really switch  our sentences from active to the passive, 

Jadi sekali lagi, sebelum kita benar-benar dapat mengubah kalimat kita dari aktif ke pasif,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence.

And the more that we understand  different parts of a sentence, 

Dan semakin kita memahami berbagai bagian kalimat,

the easier it will be to switching  active sentences to passive sentences. 

semakin mudah untuk mengubah kalimat aktif menjadi kalimat pasif.

So now let's switch our active  sentence over to a passive one. 

Jadi sekarang mari kita alihkan kalimat aktif kita ke kalimat pasif.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

Berikut kalimat kami dari sebelumnya: 'Anak itu membuka pintu.'

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

Sekarang, kita memiliki, 'Pintunya dibuka oleh anak itu.'

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences, they follow the subject verb object pattern. 

Seperti yang saya sebutkan sebelumnya, untuk kalimat aktif, mereka mengikuti pola objek kata kerja subjek.

Well it's a little bit different  from the passive sentence. 

Nah itu sedikit berbeda dengan kalimat pasif.

Before we had the receiver  at the end of the sentence, 

Sebelumnya kita memiliki penerima di akhir kalimat,

now we have the receiver in  the beginning of the sentence. 

sekarang kita memiliki penerima di awal kalimat.

‘The door was opened…’ Wow. Our verb is the same. 

'Pintunya dibuka...' Wow. Kata kerja kita sama.

Or the action is the same. But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on. 

Atau tindakannya sama. Tapi kita memiliki kata kerja 'to be' yang ditambahkan.

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb  plus the past participle of ‘open’. 

'dibuka' adalah kata kerja 'menjadi' kami ditambah dengan past participle dari 'buka'.

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

Sekarang, bisa juga kata kerja 'menjadi' ini.

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

Tapi, kita akan menggunakan 'was'.

And this will change depending on the  tense that we're using in our sentence. 

Dan ini akan berubah tergantung pada tense yang kita gunakan dalam kalimat kita.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

Kami juga memiliki 'pintu dibuka oleh anak itu'.

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

Nah, alasan mengapa kita memasukkannya ke dalam tanda kurung adalah karena

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’. And this ‘by’ helps us understand that

it is the boy who is opening the door.

Let's look at some more examples.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.  

Oke, jadi sekarang kita memiliki contoh kalimat aktif yang akan kita ubah menjadi kalimat pasif.

Let's look at our first one.

Mari kita lihat yang pertama.

‘The woman helped the man.’

"Wanita itu membantu pria itu."

We learned earlier that whenever we're  changing active sentences to passive sentences, 

Kita telah belajar sebelumnya bahwa setiap kali kita mengubah kalimat aktif menjadi kalimat pasif,

we are going to need to switch  our doer and our receiver. 

kita perlu mengganti pelaku dan penerima kita.

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is  going to switch places with the receiver,  

Dalam hal ini, pelaku, yang adalah wanita, akan bertukar tempat dengan penerima,

who is the man, because now the man is  the focus of the sentence and will now

But what's our action?

Well in our sentence before,  our action is ‘helped’.

We're going to now change this  to the past participle which,

luckily for us the past participle,  is ‘helped’.

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

Sekarang, kita akan menambahkan kata kerja 'menjadi' kita yaitu 'was'.

So the man was helped. By whom?

Jadi pria itu tertolong. Oleh siapa?

The woman.

Wanita.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

Yang sekarang ada di akhir kalimat.

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

"Pria itu dibantu oleh wanita itu."

Let's look at our next one.

Mari kita lihat yang berikutnya.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

"Kucing itu menggigit gadis itu."

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

Seperti yang kita pelajari sebelumnya, kita akan mengganti pelaku dan penerima kita.

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

Jadi sekarang gadis itu ada di depan kalimat.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit? 

'Gadis itu… bit…' Participle masa lalu dari bit?

This one's a little bit different.

Yang ini sedikit berbeda.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

'bit' akan berubah menjadi 'bitten'

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

‘The girl was bitten...'

'The girl was bitten...'

By what?

Dengan apa?

The cat.

Kucing.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

"Gadis itu digigit kucing."

‘The knife cut the bread.’

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

"Roti dipotong dengan pisau."

I think we're getting this.

Saya pikir kita mendapatkan ini.

‘The student answered the question.’

"Siswa menjawab pertanyaan itu."

‘The question was answered by the student.’

'Pertanyaan itu dijawab oleh siswa itu.'

In our last one, ‘The teacher taught the class.’ 

Dalam yang terakhir, 'Guru mengajar di kelas.'

‘The class was taught by the teacher.’

'Kelas itu diajarkan oleh guru.'

Wow. I think we're getting better.

Wow. Saya pikir kami menjadi lebih baik.

Let's move on.

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

Well now, let's practice recognizing sentences in the active and passive voice.

Nah sekarang, mari kita berlatih mengenali kalimat dalam kalimat aktif dan pasif.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

Yang pertama, 'Pemukul memukul bola.'

hmm,

hmm,

well, I can see that the doer of my action

yah, saya bisa melihat bahwa pelaku tindakan saya

is the ‘bat’.

adalah 'kelelawar'.

What did the bat do?

Apa yang dilakukan kelelawar?

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’ 

Aksinya adalah 'pukulan'. 'Pemukul memukul ...'

What's the receiver?

Apa penerima?

‘the ball’

'bola'

‘The bat hit the ball.’

'Pemukul memukul bola.'

Oh, this is definitely

Oh, ini pasti

a sentence written in the active voice. 

kalimat yang ditulis dengan suara aktif.

‘The food was cooked by the man.’

"Makanan itu dimasak oleh pria itu."

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

Sekarang, ada beberapa petunjuk besar dalam kalimat ini.

‘…by the man.’ Oh, yeah. 

'...oleh pria itu.' Oh ya.

That's a clue.

Itu petunjuk.

Also, ‘was cooked’.

Juga, 'dimasak'.

Well here's our past participle  and our ‘to be’ verb. 

Nah, inilah past participle dan kata kerja 'to be' kita.

This sentence, for sure, is a  sentence written in the passive voice. 

Kalimat ini, tentu saja, adalah kalimat yang ditulis dengan kalimat pasif.

‘The floor was cleaned.’

"Lantai sudah dibersihkan."

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

Oke, jadi saya melihat saya memiliki kata kerja 'menjadi' saya 'was'.

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

Dan past participle saya 'dibersihkan'.

But it seems like I’m missing something.

Tapi sepertinya aku kehilangan sesuatu.

I have the receiver but not the doer.

Saya memiliki penerima tetapi tidak pelakunya.

It's okay.

Tidak apa-apa.

Like we mentioned before, for some  sentences, you may not have the doer.

This is an example of a passive  sentence without the doer. 

Ini adalah contoh kalimat pasif tanpa pelaku.

‘The essay about the economy  was written by the student.’

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

Sekarang, tidak apa-apa. Saya tahu ini adalah kalimat yang besar.

But I know we can do it.

Tapi saya tahu kita bisa melakukannya.

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

Karena "booming" 'oleh mahasiswa'.

There's our clue.

Ada petunjuk kami.

Also ‘was written’.

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

Dan yang terakhir kami. Kami hampir sampai. Tetap bersamaku.

‘The best team won the football game.’ Good job team. 

'Tim terbaik memenangkan pertandingan sepak bola.' Tim kerja yang bagus.

Our team is our doer.

Tim kami adalah pelaku kami.

What did the team do?

Apa yang dilakukan tim?

What's the action?

Apa aksinya?

The team won.

Tim menang.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

Apa yang mereka menangkan? Mereka memenangkan pertandingan sepak bola.

This is definitely a sentence  written in the active voice. 

Ini jelas merupakan kalimat yang ditulis dengan suara aktif.

Ah, good job. That's some good practicing - recognizing  

Kerja bagus. Itu beberapa latihan yang baik - mengenali

sentences written in the active and passive voice.

Now, let's move on.

You now have a basic understanding  of active and passive voice.
