PASSIVE VOICE | Learn How To Change From Active to Passive Voice in English Grammar

Now many of  you know how to use the active voice,

but you might have a tough time switching over using the passive voice.

So before we can start switching our  sentences from active to passive,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence.

Let's look at our board.

We have a sentence written, ‘The boy opened the door.’

"Oğlan kapıyı açtı" şeklinde yazılmış bir cümlemiz var.

This is an example of an active sentence

Bu,

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

genellikle özne fiil nesnesi modelini izleyen aktif bir cümle örneğidir.

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’. But what did the boy do? 

Bizim öznemiz 'yapan', 'oğlan'dır. Ama çocuk ne yaptı?

‘The boy opened…’ ‘open’ is the example of an action. 

'Oğlan açtı...' 'açmak' bir eylem örneğidir.

What did the boy open? The boy opened the door. 

Çocuk neyi açtı? Oğlan kapıyı açtı.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object. 

'kapı' alıcı veya doğrudan nesnedir.

So again, before we can really switch  our sentences from active to the passive,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

bir cümlenin farklı kısımlarını anlamamız çok önemlidir.

And the more that we understand  different parts of a sentence,

the easier it will be to switching  active sentences to passive sentences.

So now let's switch our active  sentence over to a passive one.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

İşte daha önceki cümlemiz: 'Kapıyı çocuk açtı.'

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

Şimdi, 'Kapı çocuk tarafından açıldı.'

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences, they follow the subject verb object pattern. 

Daha önce de belirttiğim gibi, aktif cümleler için özne fiil nesne kalıbını izlerler.

Well it's a little bit different  from the passive sentence. 

Edilgen cümleden biraz farklı. Cümlenin sonunda

Before we had the receiver  at the end of the sentence, 

alıcımız olmadan önce ,

now we have the receiver in  the beginning of the sentence. 

şimdi cümlenin başında alıcımız var.

‘The door was opened…’ Wow. Our verb is the same. 

"Kapı açıldı..." Vay canına. Fiilimiz aynı.

Or the action is the same. But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on. 

Veya işlem aynıdır. Ama eklenmiş bir 'olmak' fiilimiz var.

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb  plus the past participle of ‘open’. 

"açıldı", "olmak" fiilimiz artı "açık"ın geçmişteki ortacıdır.

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

Şimdi, bu 'olmak' fiilleri de olabilir.

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

Ama biz 'was' kullanacağız.

And this will change depending on the  tense that we're using in our sentence. 

Ve bu, cümlemizde kullandığımız zamana göre değişir.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

Bir de 'kapıyı oğlanın açması' var.

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

Şimdi, bunu parantez içinde almamızın nedeni,

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

bazen "yapan"ın kim olduğunu bilmemize gerek olmamasıdır.

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’. And this ‘by’ helps us understand that

it is the boy who is opening the door.

Let's look at some more examples.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.

Let's look at our first one.

İlk halimize bakalım.

‘The woman helped the man.’

"Kadın adama yardım etti."

We learned earlier that whenever we're  changing active sentences to passive sentences,

we are going to need to switch  our doer and our receiver. 

yapanı ve alıcıyı değiştirmemiz gerekecek.

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is  going to switch places with the receiver,  

Bunda, yapan, yani kadın, alıcı

who is the man, because now the man is  the focus of the sentence and will now  

olan erkekle yer değiştirecek, çünkü artık erkek cümlenin odak noktası ve şimdi

come to the front - the man.

öne gelecek - erkek.

But what's our action?

Ama eylemimiz nedir?

Well in our sentence before,  our action is ‘helped’. 

Daha önceki cümlemizde, eylemimize "yardım edildi".

We're going to now change this  to the past participle which,  

Şimdi bunu geçmiş zaman kipiyle değiştireceğiz,

luckily for us the past participle,  is ‘helped’.

neyse ki bizim için geçmiş zaman kipi "yardım etti".

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

Şimdi, 'olmak' olan 'olmak' fiilimizi ekleyeceğiz.

So the man was helped. By whom?

The woman.

Kadın.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

Let's look at our next one.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit?

This one's a little bit different.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

‘The girl was bitten...'

'kız ısırıldı...'

By what?

The cat.

Kedi.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

‘The knife cut the bread.’

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

I think we're getting this.

In our last one, ‘The teacher taught the class.’

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

well, I can see that the doer of my action

What did the bat do?

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’

What's the receiver?

‘The bat hit the ball.’

Oh, this is definitely

Ah, bu kesinlikle

a sentence written in the active voice.

‘The food was cooked by the man.’

‘Yemek adam tarafından yapıldı.’

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

Şimdi, bu cümlede bazı büyük ipuçları var.

‘…by the man.’ Oh, yeah. 

“…adam tarafından.” Ah, evet.

That's a clue.

Bu bir ipucu.

Also, ‘was cooked’.

Ayrıca 'pişirildi'.

Well here's our past participle  and our ‘to be’ verb. 

İşte geçmiş katılımcımız ve "olmak" fiilimiz.

This sentence, for sure, is a  sentence written in the passive voice. 

Bu cümle, elbette pasif sesle yazılmış bir cümledir.

‘The floor was cleaned.’

'Zemin temizlendi.'

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

Tamam, yani 'olmak' fiilim olduğunu görüyorum 'was'.

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

Ve geçmiş katılımcım 'temizlendi'.

But it seems like I’m missing something.

Ama bir şeyleri kaçırıyormuşum gibi geliyor.

I have the receiver but not the doer.

Alıcı var ama yapan yok.

It's okay.

Sorun değil.

Like we mentioned before, for some  sentences, you may not have the doer.

This is an example of a passive  sentence without the doer.

‘The essay about the economy  was written by the student.’

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

Şimdi sorun değil. Bunun büyük bir cümle olduğunu biliyorum.

But I know we can do it.

Ama yapabileceğimizi biliyorum.

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

Çünkü öğrenci tarafından "patlama".

There's our clue.

Also ‘was written’.

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

Ve sonuncumuz. Neredeyse geldik. Benimle kal.

‘The best team won the football game.’ Good job team. 

‘Futbol maçını en iyi takım kazandı.’ Aferin takım.

Our team is our doer.

Ekibimiz bizim yapıcımızdır.

What did the team do?

Takım ne yaptı?

What's the action?

Eylem nedir?

The team won.

Takım kazandı.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

Ne kazandılar? Futbol maçını kazandılar.

This is definitely a sentence  written in the active voice. 

Bu kesinlikle aktif sesle yazılmış bir cümledir.
