PASSIVE VOICE | Learn How To Change From Active to Passive Voice in English Grammar

I’m going  to be teaching you about the active and passive voice in English.

Now many of  you know how to use the active voice,

but you might have a tough time switching over using the passive voice.

So before we can start switching our  sentences from active to passive, 

Kaya bago natin simulan ang pagpapalit ng ating mga pangungusap mula sa aktibo patungo sa pasibo,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

napakahalaga para sa atin na maunawaan ang iba't ibang bahagi ng isang pangungusap.

Let's look at our board.

Tingnan natin ang aming board.

We have a sentence written, ‘The boy opened the door.’

Mayroon kaming nakasulat na pangungusap, 'Binuksan ng bata ang pinto.'

This is an example of an active sentence

Ito ay isang halimbawa ng aktibong pangungusap

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

na karaniwang sumusunod sa pattern ng paksang pandiwa na bagay.

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’. But what did the boy do? 

Ang aming paksa na 'may gawa' ay 'ang batang lalaki'. Ngunit ano ang ginawa ng batang lalaki?

‘The boy opened…’ ‘open’ is the example of an action. 

'Nagbukas ang batang lalaki...' 'bukas' ang halimbawa ng isang aksyon.

What did the boy open? The boy opened the door. 

Ano ang binuksan ng batang lalaki? Binuksan ng bata ang pinto.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object. 

'ang pinto' ay ang receiver o ang direktang bagay.

So again, before we can really switch  our sentences from active to the passive, 

Kaya muli, bago natin mailipat ang ating mga pangungusap mula sa aktibo patungo sa pasibo,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

napakahalaga para sa atin na maunawaan ang iba't ibang bahagi ng isang pangungusap.

And the more that we understand  different parts of a sentence, 

At kapag mas naiintindihan natin ang iba't ibang bahagi ng isang pangungusap,

the easier it will be to switching  active sentences to passive sentences. 

mas magiging madali ang paglipat ng mga aktibong pangungusap sa mga passive na pangungusap.

So now let's switch our active  sentence over to a passive one. 

Kaya ngayon, palitan natin ang ating aktibong pangungusap sa isang passive.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

Narito ang aming pangungusap mula sa dati: 'Binuksan ng bata ang pinto.'

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

Ngayon, mayroon kaming, 'Ang pinto ay binuksan ng bata.'

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences, they follow the subject verb object pattern. 

Tulad ng nabanggit ko kanina, para sa mga aktibong pangungusap, sinusunod nila ang pattern ng object ng pandiwa ng paksa.

Well it's a little bit different  from the passive sentence. 

Well, medyo iba ito sa passive sentence.

Before we had the receiver  at the end of the sentence, 

Noon ay mayroon tayong tatanggap sa dulo ng pangungusap,

now we have the receiver in  the beginning of the sentence. 

ngayon ay mayroon tayong tatanggap sa simula ng pangungusap.

‘The door was opened…’ Wow. Our verb is the same. 

'Nabuksan ang pinto...' Wow. Ang aming pandiwa ay pareho.

Or the action is the same. But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on. 

O ang aksyon ay pareho. Ngunit mayroon kaming isang 'to be' na idinagdag.

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb  plus the past participle of ‘open’. 

'ay binuksan' ay ang aming 'to be' pandiwa kasama ang nakaraang participle ng 'bukas'.

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

Ngayon, maaari rin itong mga 'to be' na mga pandiwa.

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

Ngunit, gagamitin natin ang 'was'.

And this will change depending on the  tense that we're using in our sentence. 

At ito ay magbabago depende sa panahunan na ginagamit namin sa aming pangungusap.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

Mayroon din kaming 'pintuan na binuksan ng bata'.

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

Ngayon, ang dahilan kung bakit mayroon tayo nito sa mga bracket ay dahil

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

minsan hindi natin kailangang malaman kung sino ang 'may gawa'.

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’. And this ‘by’ helps us understand that  

Sa ganitong kahulugan, ang batang lalaki ay ang 'may gawa'. At ang 'ni' na ito ay tumutulong sa atin na maunawaan na

it is the boy who is opening the door.

ang batang lalaki ang nagbubukas ng pinto.

Let's look at some more examples.

Tingnan natin ang ilang higit pang mga halimbawa.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.  

Okay, kaya ngayon ay mayroon tayong mga halimbawa ng mga aktibong pangungusap na babaguhin natin sa mga passive na pangungusap.

Let's look at our first one.

Tingnan natin ang una natin.

‘The woman helped the man.’

'Tinulungan ng babae ang lalaki.'

We learned earlier that whenever we're  changing active sentences to passive sentences, 

Nalaman namin kanina na sa tuwing binabago namin ang mga aktibong pangungusap sa mga passive na pangungusap,

we are going to need to switch  our doer and our receiver. 

kakailanganin naming ilipat ang aming gumagawa at ang aming tagatanggap.

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is  going to switch places with the receiver,  

Sa isang ito, ang gumagawa, na siyang babae, ay magpapalit ng puwesto sa tatanggap,

who is the man, because now the man is  the focus of the sentence and will now  

kung sino ang lalaki, dahil ngayon ang lalaki ang pinagtutuunan ng pansin ng pangungusap at ngayon ay

come to the front - the man.

pupunta sa harap - ang lalaki.

But what's our action?

Ngunit ano ang ating aksyon?

Well in our sentence before,  our action is ‘helped’. 

Well sa sentence natin before, 'helped' ang action natin.

We're going to now change this  to the past participle which,  

Papalitan natin ito ngayon sa past participle na,

luckily for us the past participle,  is ‘helped’.

sa kabutihang-palad para sa amin ang past participle, ay 'nakatulong'.

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

Ngayon, idaragdag natin ang ating 'to be' na pandiwa na 'was'.

So the man was helped. By whom?

Kaya tinulungan ang lalaki. kanino?

The woman.

Ang babae.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

Na ngayon ay nasa dulo ng pangungusap.

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

'Yung lalaki ay tinulungan ng babae.'

Let's look at our next one.

Tingnan natin ang aming susunod.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

'Kinagat ng pusa ang babae.'

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

Tulad ng natutunan natin noon, papalitan natin ang ating gumagawa at ang ating tatanggap.

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

Kaya ngayon ay nasa unahan ng pangungusap ang dalaga.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit? 

'Yung babae... bit...' Ang past participle ng bit?

This one's a little bit different.

Ang isang ito ay medyo naiiba.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

Ang 'bit' ay magiging 'bitten'

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

Kapag idinagdag natin ang ating 'to be' verb 'was',

‘The girl was bitten...'

'The girl was bitten...'

By what?

By what?

The cat.

Ang pusa.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

'Nakagat ng pusa ang babae.'

‘The knife cut the bread.’ 

'Ang kutsilyo ay pinutol ang tinapay.'

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

'Ang tinapay ay pinutol ng kutsilyo.'

I think we're getting this.

Sa tingin ko ay nakukuha natin ito.

‘The student answered the question.’

'Sinagot ng estudyante ang tanong.'

‘The question was answered by the student.’

'Ang tanong ay sinagot ng estudyante.'

In our last one, ‘The teacher taught the class.’ 

Sa aming huling isa, 'Itinuro ng guro ang klase.'

‘The class was taught by the teacher.’

'Ang klase ay itinuro ng guro.'

Wow. I think we're getting better.

Wow. Palagay ko nagkakamabutihan na tayo.

Let's move on.

Mag-move on na tayo.

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

Kaya kanina, binago namin ang ilang mga pangungusap mula sa aktibo patungo sa tinig na tinig.

Well now, let's practice recognizing sentences in the active and passive voice.

Ngayon, magsanay tayo sa pagkilala ng mga pangungusap sa aktibo at tinig na tinig.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

Ang una namin, 'Natamaan ng paniki ang bola.'

hmm,

hmm,

well, I can see that the doer of my action

well, nakikita ko na

is the ‘bat’.

'bat' ang gumagawa ng aksyon ko.

What did the bat do?

Ano ang ginawa ng paniki?

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’ 

Ang aksyon ay 'hit'. 'Natamaan ng paniki...'

What's the receiver?

Ano ang receiver?

‘the ball’

'ang bola'

‘The bat hit the ball.’

'Natamaan ng paniki ang bola.'

Oh, this is definitely

Oh, ito ay tiyak na

a sentence written in the active voice. 

isang pangungusap na nakasulat sa aktibong boses.

‘The food was cooked by the man.’

'Yung pagkain ang niluto ng lalaki.'

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

Ngayon, may ilang malalaking pahiwatig sa pangungusap na ito.

‘…by the man.’ Oh, yeah. 

'...ng lalaki.' Ay, oo.

That's a clue.

Iyon ay isang palatandaan.

Also, ‘was cooked’.

Gayundin, 'naluto'.

Well here's our past participle  and our ‘to be’ verb. 

Well narito ang aming past participle at ang aming 'to be' verb.

This sentence, for sure, is a  sentence written in the passive voice. 

Ang pangungusap na ito, tiyak, ay isang pangungusap na nakasulat sa tinig na tinig.

‘The floor was cleaned.’

'Nalinis ang sahig.'

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

Okay, kaya nakikita kong mayroon akong 'to be' verb 'was'.

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

At 'naglinis' ang past participle ko.

But it seems like I’m missing something.

Pero parang may kulang sakin.

I have the receiver but not the doer.

Nasa akin ang receiver ngunit hindi ang gumagawa.

It's okay.

ayos lang.

Like we mentioned before, for some  sentences, you may not have the doer. 

Tulad ng nabanggit namin dati, para sa ilang mga pangungusap, maaaring wala sa iyo ang gumagawa.

This is an example of a passive  sentence without the doer. 

Ito ay isang halimbawa ng passive sentence na walang gumagawa.

‘The essay about the economy  was written by the student.’ 

'Ang sanaysay tungkol sa ekonomiya ay isinulat ng mag-aaral.'

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

Ngayon, okay na. Alam kong malaking pangungusap ito.

But I know we can do it.

Pero alam kong kakayanin natin.

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

Dahil "boom" 'ng estudyante'.

There's our clue.

Nandiyan ang aming clue.

Also ‘was written’.

'Nakasulat' din.

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

Mayroon tayong past participle at ang ating 'to be' verb.

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

Ito ay isang pangungusap na nakasulat sa tinig na tinig.

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

At ang huli namin. Malapit na tayo. Manatili sa akin.

‘The best team won the football game.’ Good job team. 

'Ang pinakamahusay na koponan ay nanalo sa laro ng football.' Good job team.

Our team is our doer.

Ang aming koponan ay ang aming gumagawa.

What did the team do?

Ano ang ginawa ng pangkat?

What's the action?

Ano ang aksyon?

The team won.

Nanalo ang team.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

Ano ang napanalunan nila? Nanalo sila sa football game.

This is definitely a sentence  written in the active voice. 

Ito ay tiyak na isang pangungusap na nakasulat sa aktibong boses.

Ah, good job. That's some good practicing - recognizing  

Ah, magandang trabaho. Iyan ay ilang mahusay na pagsasanay - pagkilala

sentences written in the active and passive voice.

sa mga pangungusap na nakasulat sa aktibo at tinig na tinig.

Now, let's move on.

Ngayon, magpatuloy tayo.

You now have a basic understanding  of active and passive voice. 

Mayroon ka na ngayong pangunahing pag-unawa sa aktibo at passive na boses.

But you're not done yet.

Pero hindi ka pa tapos.

Because you have homework.

Dahil may takdang-aralin ka.

You are going to change this active voice  

Papalitan mo ang aktibong voice

sentence into a passive one.

sentence na ito sa isang passive.

‘Mike taught the passive voice.’

'Itinuro ni Mike ang passive voice.'

Again, change this sentence into a passive voice  sentence and write it in the comments below.
