PASSIVE VOICE | Learn How To Change From Active to Passive Voice in English Grammar

영어의 능동태와 수동태에 대해 가르쳐 드리겠습니다.

Now many of  you know how to use the active voice,

이제 여러분 중 많은 분들이 능동태를 사용하는 방법을 알고 있지만,

but you might have a tough time switching over using the passive voice.

수동태를 사용하여 전환하는 데 어려움을 겪을 수도 있습니다.

So before we can start switching our  sentences from active to passive, 

따라서 능동태에서 수동태로 문장을 전환하기 전에

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

문장의 다양한 부분을 이해하는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

Let's look at our board.

우리 보드를 살펴 보겠습니다.

We have a sentence written, ‘The boy opened the door.’

'소년이 문을 열었다'라는 문장이 있습니다. 이것은

This is an example of an active sentence

주로 주어 동사 목적어의 패턴을 따르는

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

능동형 문장의 예입니다 .

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’. But what did the boy do? 

우리의 주제인 'doer'는 'the boy'입니다. 그런데 그 소년은 무엇을 했나요?

‘The boy opened…’ ‘open’ is the example of an action. 

'소년이 열었다...' '열다'는 행위의 예입니다.

What did the boy open? The boy opened the door. 

그 소년은 무엇을 열었습니까? 소년은 문을 열었다.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object. 

'문'은 수신자 또는 직접 목적어입니다.

So again, before we can really switch  our sentences from active to the passive, 

다시 말하지만, 능동태에서 수동태로 문장을 전환하기 전에

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

문장의 다양한 부분을 이해하는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

And the more that we understand  different parts of a sentence, 

그리고 문장의 다양한 부분을 더 많이 이해할수록

the easier it will be to switching  active sentences to passive sentences. 

능동형 문장을 수동형 문장으로 전환하는 것이 더 쉬워집니다.

So now let's switch our active  sentence over to a passive one. 

이제 능동형 문장을 수동형 문장으로 바꿔 보겠습니다.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

이전 문장은 다음과 같습니다. '소년이 문을 열었습니다.'

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

이제 우리는 '소년이 문을 열었습니다.'라고 했습니다.

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences, they follow the subject verb object pattern. 

앞서 언급한 것처럼 능동형 문장의 경우 주어 동사 목적어 패턴을 따릅니다.

Well it's a little bit different  from the passive sentence. 

글쎄요, 수동태 문장과는 조금 다릅니다.

Before we had the receiver  at the end of the sentence, 

이전에는 문장 끝에 수신자가 있었지만

now we have the receiver in  the beginning of the sentence. 

이제는 문장 시작 부분에 수신자가 있습니다.

‘The door was opened…’ Wow. Our verb is the same. 

'문이 열렸어...' 와우. 우리의 동사도 마찬가지입니다.

Or the action is the same. But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on. 

아니면 행동은 동일합니다. 하지만 'to be' 동사가 추가되었습니다.

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb  plus the past participle of ‘open’. 

'was open'은 'to be' 동사에 'open'의 과거분사를 더한 것입니다.

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

이제, 'to be' 동사도 될 수 있습니다.

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

하지만 우리는 'was'를 사용할 것입니다.

And this will change depending on the  tense that we're using in our sentence. 

그리고 이것은 우리가 문장에서 사용하는 시제에 따라 바뀔 것입니다.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

'소년이 문을 여는 것'도 있습니다.

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

이제 괄호 안에 넣은 이유는

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

때로는 '행위자'가 누구인지 알 필요가 없기 때문입니다.

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’. And this ‘by’ helps us understand that  

이런 의미에서 소년은 '행위자'이다. 그리고 이 'by' 는 문을 여는 사람이 소년이라는

it is the boy who is opening the door.

것을 이해하는 데 도움이 됩니다 .

Let's look at some more examples.

몇 가지 예를 더 살펴보겠습니다.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.  

좋습니다. 이제 능동형 문장의 예를 살펴보고 수동형 문장으로 바꿔 보겠습니다.

Let's look at our first one.

첫 번째를 살펴 보겠습니다.

‘The woman helped the man.’

'여자가 남자를 도왔습니다.' 우리는

We learned earlier that whenever we're  changing active sentences to passive sentences, 

능동 문장을 수동 문장으로 바꿀 때마다

we are going to need to switch  our doer and our receiver. 

행위자와 수신자를 바꿔야 한다는 것을 앞서 배웠습니다.

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is  going to switch places with the receiver,  

여기서는 여자인 행위자가 받는 사람인

who is the man, because now the man is  the focus of the sentence and will now  

남자와 자리를 바꿀 것입니다. 왜냐하면 이제 남자가 문장의 초점이고 이제

come to the front - the man.

맨 앞으로 올 것이기 때문입니다.

But what's our action?

그런데 우리의 행동은 무엇입니까?

Well in our sentence before,  our action is ‘helped’. 

글쎄요, 이전 문장에서 우리의 행동은 '도움을 받았습니다'입니다.

We're going to now change this  to the past participle which,  

이제 이것을 과거분사로 바꾸겠습니다.

luckily for us the past participle,  is ‘helped’.

운 좋게도 과거분사는 '도움을 받았습니다'.

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

이제 'to be' 동사인 'was'를 추가하겠습니다.

So the man was helped. By whom?

그래서 그 사람은 도움을 받았습니다. 누구에 의해?

The woman.

여자.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

이제 문장이 끝났습니다.

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

'남자는 여자의 도움을 받았습니다.'

Let's look at our next one.

다음을 살펴 보겠습니다.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

'고양이가 소녀를 물었다.'

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

이전에 배웠던 것처럼, 수행자와 수신자를 전환하겠습니다.

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

그러면 이제 그 소녀가 문장 앞에 와 있는 것입니다.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit? 

'그 소녀… 비트…' 비트의 과거분사?

This one's a little bit different.

이건 좀 다릅니다.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

'bit'는 'bitten'으로 바뀔 것입니다.

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

'to be' 동사 'was',

‘The girl was bitten...'

'The girl was bitten...'을 추가하면

By what?

무엇을 의미하나요?

The cat.

고양이.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

'그 소녀는 고양이에게 물렸습니다.'

‘The knife cut the bread.’ 

'칼이 빵을 자른다.'

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

'빵이 칼에 베였다.'

I think we're getting this.

내 생각엔 우리가 이것을 얻고 있는 것 같아요.

‘The student answered the question.’

'학생이 질문에 대답했습니다.'

‘The question was answered by the student.’

'질문에 학생이 답변했습니다.'

In our last one, ‘The teacher taught the class.’ 

지난번에는 '선생님이 수업을 가르치셨어요.'

‘The class was taught by the teacher.’

'수업은 선생님이 가르쳤어요.'

Wow. I think we're getting better.

우와. 내 생각엔 우리가 점점 나아지고 있는 것 같아.

Let's move on.

계속 진행합시다.

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

그래서 앞서 우리는 일부 문장을 능동태에서 수동태로 변경했습니다.

Well now, let's practice recognizing sentences in the active and passive voice.

자, 이제 능동태와 수동태로 문장을 인식하는 연습을 해보세요.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

첫 번째는 '방망이가 공을 쳤습니다.'입니다.

hmm,

흠

well, I can see that the doer of my action

, 내 행동의 주체

is the ‘bat’.

는 '박쥐'라는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

What did the bat do?

박쥐는 무엇을 했나요?

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’ 

액션은 '히트'다. '방망이가 맞았다…'

What's the receiver?

리시버는 무엇입니까?

‘the ball’

'공'

‘The bat hit the ball.’

'방망이가 공을 쳤다.'

Oh, this is definitely

아, 이건 확실히

a sentence written in the active voice. 

능동태로 쓴 문장이군요.

‘The food was cooked by the man.’

'음식은 남자가 요리했어요.'

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

자, 이 문장에는 몇 가지 큰 단서가 있습니다.

‘…by the man.’ Oh, yeah. 

'...남자가.' 오 예.

That's a clue.

그게 단서입니다.

Also, ‘was cooked’.

또한, '요리되었다'.

Well here's our past participle  and our ‘to be’ verb. 

자, 여기 과거 분사와 'to be' 동사가 있습니다.

This sentence, for sure, is a  sentence written in the passive voice. 

이 문장은 확실히 수동태로 쓴 문장입니다.

‘The floor was cleaned.’

'바닥이 깨끗해졌습니다.'

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

알겠습니다. 'to be' 동사 'was'가 있습니다.

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

그리고 내 과거 분사는 'cleand'였습니다.

But it seems like I’m missing something.

하지만 뭔가 빠진 것 같습니다.

I have the receiver but not the doer.

나는 받는 사람은 있지만 행동하는 사람은 없습니다.

It's okay.

괜찮아요.

Like we mentioned before, for some  sentences, you may not have the doer. 

앞서 언급한 것처럼 일부 문장에서는 행위자가 없을 수도 있습니다.

This is an example of a passive  sentence without the doer. 

행위자가 없는 수동태 문장의 예입니다.

‘The essay about the economy  was written by the student.’ 

'경제에 관한 에세이는 학생이 썼습니다.'

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

이제 괜찮아요. 나는 이것이 큰 문장이라는 것을 안다.

But I know we can do it.

하지만 나는 우리가 할 수 있다는 것을 압니다.

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

왜냐하면 '붐'은 학생에 의한 것이기 때문입니다.

There's our clue.

여기에 단서가 있습니다.

Also ‘was written’.

또한 '썼다'.

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

과거분사와 'to be' 동사가 있습니다.

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

수동태로 작성된 문장입니다.

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

그리고 우리의 마지막 것. 거의 다 왔어. 나와 함께있어.

‘The best team won the football game.’ Good job team. 

'최고의 팀이 축구 경기에서 승리했습니다.' 잘했어 팀.

Our team is our doer.

우리 팀은 행동하는 사람입니다.

What did the team do?

팀은 무엇을 했나요?

What's the action?

행동은 무엇입니까?

The team won.

팀이 승리했습니다.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

그들은 무엇을 이겼습니까? 그들은 축구 경기에서 승리했습니다.

This is definitely a sentence  written in the active voice. 

이것은 확실히 능동태로 쓴 문장입니다.

Ah, good job. That's some good practicing - recognizing  

아, 잘했어요. 그것은 좋은 연습입니다 -

sentences written in the active and passive voice.

능동태와 수동태로 쓰여진 문장을 인식하는 것입니다.

Now, let's move on.

이제 계속 진행해 보겠습니다.

You now have a basic understanding  of active and passive voice. 

이제 능동태와 수동태에 대한 기본적인 이해가 끝났습니다.

But you're not done yet.

하지만 아직 끝나지 않았습니다.

Because you have homework.

숙제가 있으니까요. 이 능동태

You are going to change this active voice  

문장을 수동태 문장으로

sentence into a passive one.

바꾸겠습니다 .

‘Mike taught the passive voice.’

'마이크는 수동태를 가르쳤습니다.'
