PASSIVE VOICE | Learn How To Change From Active to Passive Voice in English Grammar

I’m going  to be teaching you about the active and passive voice in English.

영어의 능동태와 수동태에 대해 가르쳐 드릴 것입니다.

Now many of  you know how to use the active voice,

이제 많은 분들이 능동태를 사용하는 방법을 알고

but you might have a tough time switching over using the passive voice.

있지만 수동태를 사용하여 전환하는 데 어려움을 겪을 수 있습니다.

So before we can start switching our  sentences from active to passive, 

따라서 능동태에서 수동태로 문장을 전환하기 전에

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

문장의 다른 부분을 이해하는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

Let's look at our board.

우리 보드를 봅시다.

We have a sentence written, ‘The boy opened the door.’

'The boy opens the door'라는 문장이 있습니다.

This is an example of an active sentence

이것은

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

일반적으로 주어 동사 목적어의 패턴을 따르는 능동태 문장의 예입니다.

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’. But what did the boy do? 

우리의 주제인 '행위자'는 '소년'입니다. 그런데 그 소년은 무엇을 했습니까?

‘The boy opened…’ ‘open’ is the example of an action. 

'소년이 열었다...' '열다'는 동작의 예입니다.

What did the boy open? The boy opened the door. 

소년은 무엇을 열었습니까? 소년은 문을 열었다.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object. 

'the door'는 수신자 또는 직접 목적어입니다.

So again, before we can really switch  our sentences from active to the passive, 

따라서 다시 말하지만 능동태에서 수동태로 문장을 전환하기 전에

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

문장의 다른 부분을 이해하는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

And the more that we understand  different parts of a sentence, 

그리고 문장의 다른 부분을 더 많이 이해할수록

the easier it will be to switching  active sentences to passive sentences.

So now let's switch our active  sentence over to a passive one. 

이제 능동태 문장을 수동태 문장으로 바꾸겠습니다.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

이전 문장은 다음과 같습니다. '소년이 문을 열었습니다.'

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

이제 '소년이 문을 열었습니다.'

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences, they follow the subject verb object pattern. 

앞에서 언급한 것처럼 능동태의 경우 주어 동사 목적어 패턴을 따릅니다.

Well it's a little bit different  from the passive sentence. 

수동태 문장과는 조금 다릅니다. 문장 끝에

Before we had the receiver  at the end of the sentence, 

리시버가 있기 전에는

now we have the receiver in  the beginning of the sentence. 

이제 문장 시작 부분에 리시버가 있습니다 .

‘The door was opened…’ Wow. Our verb is the same. 

'문이 열렸다...' 와우. 우리의 동사는 동일합니다.

Or the action is the same. But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on. 

또는 동작은 동일합니다. 그러나 'to be' 동사가 추가되었습니다.

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb  plus the past participle of ‘open’. 

'열렸다'는 '되다' 동사에 '열다'의 과거분사를 더한 것입니다.

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

이제, 이 'to be' 동사도 될 수 있습니다.

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

그러나 우리는 '했다'를 사용할 것입니다.

And this will change depending on the  tense that we're using in our sentence. 

그리고 이것은 우리가 문장에서 사용하는 시제에 따라 달라집니다.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

'소년이 여는 문'도 있다.

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

이제 괄호 안에 있는 이유는

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

때때로 누가 '행위자'인지 알 필요가 없기 때문입니다.

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’. And this ‘by’ helps us understand that  

그런 의미에서 소년은 '행위자'이다. 그리고 이 'by'는 문을 여는 사람이 소년이라는 것을 이해하는 데 도움이 됩니다

it is the boy who is opening the door.

Let's look at some more examples.

몇 가지 예를 더 살펴보겠습니다.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.  

자, 이제 능동태 문장의 예가 있습니다. 수동태 문장으로 변경하겠습니다.

Let's look at our first one.

첫 번째 것을 봅시다.

‘The woman helped the man.’

'여자가 남자를 도왔습니다.'

We learned earlier that whenever we're  changing active sentences to passive sentences, 

능동태 문장을 수동태 문장으로 바꿀 때마다

we are going to need to switch  our doer and our receiver. 

행위자와 수신기를 바꿔야 한다는 것을 앞에서 배웠습니다.

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is  going to switch places with the receiver,  

여기에서 여자인 행위자는 남자인 받는 사람과 자리를 바꿀 것입니다.

who is the man, because now the man is  the focus of the sentence and will now  

왜냐하면 이제 남자는 문장의 초점이고 이제

come to the front - the man.

남자 앞으로 올 것이기 때문입니다.

But what's our action?

그러나 우리의 행동은 무엇입니까?

Well in our sentence before,  our action is ‘helped’. 

이전 문장에서 우리의 행동은 '도움을 받았다'입니다.

We're going to now change this  to the past participle which,  

이제 이것을 과거분사로 바꾸겠습니다. 다행스럽게도

luckily for us the past participle,  is ‘helped’.

과거분사는 'helped'입니다.

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

이제 우리의 'to be' 동사인 'was'를 추가할 것입니다.

So the man was helped. By whom?

그래서 그 남자는 도움을 받았습니다. 누구에 의해?

The woman.

여자.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

이제 문장의 끝에 있습니다.

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

'남자는 여자의 도움을 받았다.'

Let's look at our next one.

다음 이야기를 봅시다.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

'고양이가 소녀를 물었습니다.'

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

이전에 배웠던 것처럼 행동하는 사람과 받는 사람을 바꿀 것입니다.

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

그래서 지금 소녀는 문장의 앞에 있습니다.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit? 

'그 여자... 비트...' 비트의 과거분사?

This one's a little bit different.

이것은 조금 다릅니다.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

'bit'는 'bitten'으로 변경됩니다.

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

'be' 동사 'was'를 추가하면

‘The girl was bitten...'

'The girl was bitten...'

By what?

무엇에 의해?

The cat.

고양이.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

'여자애가 고양이에게 물렸어.' '

‘The knife cut the bread.’ 

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

칼이 빵을 잘랐어.'

I think we're getting this.

‘The student answered the question.’

'학생이 질문에 답했습니다.' '

‘The question was answered by the student.’

학생이 질문에 답했습니다.'

In our last one, ‘The teacher taught the class.’ 

지난번에는 ' 선생님이 수업을 가르쳤습니다.' '

‘The class was taught by the teacher.’

선생님이 수업을 가르쳤습니다.'

Wow. I think we're getting better.

와. 나는 우리가 나아지고 있다고 생각합니다.

Let's move on.

계속합시다.

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

그래서 앞서 능동태에서 수동태로 일부 문장을 변경했습니다.

Well now, let's practice recognizing sentences in the active and passive voice.

자, 이제 능동태와 수동태로 문장을 인식하는 연습을 해 봅시다.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

우리의 첫 번째 작품인 '배트가 공을 쳤다'.

hmm,

well, I can see that the doer of my action

음, 내 행동을 하는 사람이

is the ‘bat’.

'배트'라는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

What did the bat do?

박쥐는 무엇을 했습니까?

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’ 

행동은 '히트'다. '방망이가 맞았다...'

What's the receiver?

리시버가 뭐야?

‘the ball’

'the ball'

‘The bat hit the ball.’

'The bat hit the ball.'

Oh, this is definitely

아, 이건 확실히

a sentence written in the active voice. 

능동태로 쓴 문장이구나.

‘The food was cooked by the man.’

'음식은 남자가 요리했다.'

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

자, 이 문장에는 몇 가지 큰 단서가 있습니다.

‘…by the man.’ Oh, yeah. 

'...남자에 의해.' 오, 그래.

That's a clue.

그게 단서입니다.

Also, ‘was cooked’.

또한, '조리했다'.

Well here's our past participle  and our ‘to be’ verb. 

자, 여기 과거 분사 와 동사 'to be'가 있습니다.

This sentence, for sure, is a  sentence written in the passive voice. 

이 문장은 확실히 수동태로 쓰여진 문장입니다.

‘The floor was cleaned.’

'바닥이 깨끗해졌습니다.'

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

좋아요, 제 'be' 동사 'was'가 있습니다.

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

그리고 나의 과거 분사는 'cleaned'입니다.

But it seems like I’m missing something.

하지만 뭔가 빠진 것 같습니다.

I have the receiver but not the doer.

나는 받는 사람은 있지만 행동하는 사람은 없다.

It's okay.

괜찮아요.

Like we mentioned before, for some  sentences, you may not have the doer. 

앞에서 언급한 것처럼 일부 문장의 경우 행위자가 없을 수 있습니다.

This is an example of a passive  sentence without the doer. 

이것은 행위자가 없는 수동태 문장의 예입니다 .

‘The essay about the economy  was written by the student.’ 

'경제에 대한 에세이는 학생이 쓴 것입니다.'

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

이제 괜찮습니다. 나는 이것이 큰 문장이라는 것을 압니다.

But I know we can do it.

그러나 나는 우리가 할 수 있다는 것을 압니다. '

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

학생에 의한' '붐' 때문입니다.

There's our clue.

단서가 있습니다.

Also ‘was written’.

또한 '쓰였다'.

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

과거 분사와 'to be' 동사가 있습니다.

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

이것은 수동태로 쓰여진 문장입니다.

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

그리고 우리의 마지막. 거의 다 왔어. 나와 함께있어.

‘The best team won the football game.’ Good job team. 

'최고의 팀이 축구 경기에서 이겼어.' 팀 수고했어.

Our team is our doer.

우리 팀은 우리의 행위자입니다.

What did the team do?

팀은 무엇을 했습니까?

What's the action?

행동은 무엇입니까?

The team won.

팀이 이겼습니다.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

그들은 무엇을 이겼습니까? 그들은 축구 경기에서 이겼습니다.

This is definitely a sentence  written in the active voice. 

이것은 확실히 능동태로 쓰여진 문장입니다.

Ah, good job. That's some good practicing - recognizing  

아, 잘했어. 그것은

sentences written in the active and passive voice.

능동태와 수동태로 쓰여진 문장을 인식하는 좋은 연습입니다.

Now, let's move on.

이제 계속 진행하겠습니다.

You now have a basic understanding  of active and passive voice. 

이제 능동태와 수동태에 대한 기본적인 이해가 생겼습니다.

But you're not done yet.

Because you have homework.

You are going to change this active voice  

이 능동태

sentence into a passive one.

문장을 수동태로 바꿀 것입니다.

‘Mike taught the passive voice.’

'Mike가 수동태를 가르쳤습니다.'
