PASSIVE VOICE | Learn How To Change From Active to Passive Voice in English Grammar

Now many of  you know how to use the active voice,

but you might have a tough time switching over using the passive voice.

So before we can start switching our  sentences from active to passive,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence.

Let's look at our board.

Vamos olhar para o nosso tabuleiro.

We have a sentence written, ‘The boy opened the door.’

Temos uma frase escrita: 'O menino abriu a porta'.

This is an example of an active sentence

Este é um exemplo de uma frase ativa

which usually follows the pattern of subject verb object.

que geralmente segue o padrão de sujeito verbo objeto.

Our subject the ‘doer’ is ‘the boy’. But what did the boy do? 

Nosso sujeito, o ‘fazedor’, é ‘o menino’. Mas o que o menino fez?

‘The boy opened…’ ‘open’ is the example of an action. 

‘O menino abriu...’ ‘abrir’ é o exemplo de uma ação.

What did the boy open? The boy opened the door. 

O que o menino abriu? O menino abriu a porta.

‘the door’ is the receiver or the direct object. 

‘a porta’ é o receptor ou o objeto direto.

So again, before we can really switch  our sentences from active to the passive, 

Então, novamente, antes que possamos realmente mudar nossas frases de ativas para passivas,

it's very important for us to understand  the different parts of a sentence. 

é muito importante entendermos as diferentes partes de uma frase.

And the more that we understand  different parts of a sentence, 

E quanto mais entendermos as diferentes partes de uma frase,

the easier it will be to switching  active sentences to passive sentences. 

mais fácil será mudar as frases ativas para as passivas.

So now let's switch our active  sentence over to a passive one. 

Agora, vamos mudar nossa frase ativa para passiva.

Here's our sentence from before: ‘The boy opened the door.’ 

Aqui está nossa frase anterior: 'O menino abriu a porta.'

Now, we have, ‘The door was opened by the boy.’

Agora temos, 'A porta foi aberta pelo menino'

Like I mentioned earlier, for active sentences, they follow the subject verb object pattern.

Well it's a little bit different  from the passive sentence. 

Bem, é um pouco diferente da frase passiva.

Before we had the receiver  at the end of the sentence, 

Antes tínhamos o receptor no final da frase,

now we have the receiver in  the beginning of the sentence. 

agora temos o receptor no início da frase.

‘The door was opened…’ Wow. Our verb is the same. 

'A porta foi aberta ...' Uau. Nosso verbo é o mesmo.

Or the action is the same. But we have a ‘to be’ verb added on. 

Ou a ação é a mesma. Mas temos um verbo 'ser' adicionado.

‘was opened’ is our ‘to be’ verb  plus the past participle of ‘open’. 

'foi aberto' é o nosso verbo 'ser' mais o particípio passado de 'abrir'.

Now, it could also be these ‘to be’ verbs as well.

Agora, também podem ser esses verbos 'ser' também.

But, we're going to use ‘was’.

Mas, vamos usar 'era'.

And this will change depending on the  tense that we're using in our sentence. 

E isso mudará dependendo do tempo verbal que estivermos usando em nossa frase.

We also have ‘the door being opened by the boy’.

Também temos ‘a porta sendo aberta pelo menino’.

Now, the reason why we have it in brackets is because

Agora, o motivo pelo qual o colocamos entre colchetes é porque

sometimes we don't need to know who is the ‘doer’.

às vezes não precisamos saber quem é o 'fazedor'.

In this sense, the boy is the ‘doer’. And this ‘by’ helps us understand that  

Nesse sentido, o menino é o ‘fazedor’. E esse 'por' nos ajuda a entender que

it is the boy who is opening the door.

é o menino quem está abrindo a porta.

Let's look at some more examples.

Vejamos mais alguns exemplos.

Okay, so now we have examples of active sentences  that we're going to change to passive sentences.  

Ok, agora temos exemplos de frases ativas que vamos mudar para frases passivas.

Let's look at our first one.

Vejamos o nosso primeiro.

‘The woman helped the man.’

'A mulher ajudou o homem.'

We learned earlier that whenever we're  changing active sentences to passive sentences, 

Aprendemos anteriormente que, sempre que mudarmos frases ativas para frases passivas,

we are going to need to switch  our doer and our receiver. 

precisaremos trocar nosso agente e nosso receptor.

In this one, the doer, who is the woman, is  going to switch places with the receiver,  

Neste, o fazedor, que é a mulher, vai  trocar de lugar com o receptor,

who is the man, because now the man is  the focus of the sentence and will now

come to the front - the man.

But what's our action?

Well in our sentence before,  our action is ‘helped’. 

Bem, em nossa frase anterior, nossa ação é 'ajudada'.

We're going to now change this  to the past participle which,  

Vamos agora mudar isso para o particípio passado que,

luckily for us the past participle,  is ‘helped’.

felizmente para nós, o particípio passado é 'ajudado'.

Now, we're going to add our ‘to be’ verb which is ‘was’.

Agora, vamos adicionar nosso verbo 'to be', que é 'was'.

So the man was helped. By whom?

Então o homem foi ajudado. Por quem?

The woman.

A mulher.

Which is now at the end of the sentence.

Que agora está no final da frase.

‘The man was helped by the woman.’

'O homem foi ajudado pela mulher'.

Let's look at our next one.

Vejamos o próximo.

‘The cat bit the girl.’

'O gato mordeu a garota.'

Just like we learned before, we're going to switch our doer and our receiver.

Assim como aprendemos antes, vamos trocar nosso fazedor e nosso receptor.

So now the girl is in the front of the sentence.

Então agora a garota está na frente da frase.

‘The girl… bit…’ The past participle of bit? 

'A garota... bit...' O particípio passado de bit?

This one's a little bit different.

Este é um pouco diferente.

‘bit’ is going to change to ‘bitten’

'bit' vai mudar para 'bitten'

When we add our ‘to be’ verb ‘was’,

‘The girl was bitten...'

The girl was bitten...'

By what?

Por quê?

The cat.

O gato.

‘The girl was bitten by the cat.’

'A menina foi mordida pelo gato.' '

‘The knife cut the bread.’

‘The bread was cut by the knife.’

O pão foi cortado pela faca.'

I think we're getting this.

Acho que estamos entendendo.

‘The student answered the question.’

'O aluno respondeu à pergunta.' '

‘The question was answered by the student.’

A pergunta foi respondida pelo aluno.'

In our last one, ‘The teacher taught the class.’ 

Em nossa última, ' O professor deu a aula.'  '

‘The class was taught by the teacher.’

A aula foi dada pelo professor.'

Wow. I think we're getting better.

Uau. Acho que estamos melhorando.

Let's move on.

Vamos continuar.

So earlier we changed some sentences from the active to the passive voice.

Então, anteriormente, mudamos algumas frases da voz ativa para a voz passiva.

Well now, let's practice recognizing sentences in the active and passive voice.

Bem, agora vamos praticar o reconhecimento de sentenças na voz ativa e passiva.

Our first one, ‘The bat hit the ball.’

Nosso primeiro, 'O taco acertou a bola.'

hmm,

hmm,

well, I can see that the doer of my action

bem, posso ver que o autor da minha ação

is the ‘bat’.

é o 'taco'.

What did the bat do?

O que o morcego fez?

The action is ‘hit’. ‘The bat hit…’ 

A ação é 'bater'. 'O bastão bateu...'

What's the receiver?

Qual é o receptor?

‘the ball’

'a bola'

‘The bat hit the ball.’

'O bastão bateu na bola.'

Oh, this is definitely

Oh, esta é definitivamente

a sentence written in the active voice. 

uma frase escrita na voz ativa.

‘The food was cooked by the man.’

'A comida foi preparada pelo homem.'

Now, there are some big clues in this sentence.

Agora, há algumas grandes pistas nesta frase.

‘…by the man.’ Oh, yeah. 

'... pelo homem.' Oh, sim.

That's a clue.

Isso é uma pista.

Also, ‘was cooked’.

Além disso, 'foi cozido'.

Well here's our past participle  and our ‘to be’ verb. 

Bem, aqui está nosso particípio passado e nosso verbo 'ser'.

This sentence, for sure, is a  sentence written in the passive voice. 

Esta frase, com certeza, é uma frase escrita na voz passiva.

‘The floor was cleaned.’

'O chão foi limpo.'

Okay, so I see I have my ‘to be’ verb ‘was’.

Ok, então vejo que tenho meu verbo 'ser' 'era'.

And my past participle ‘cleaned’.

E meu particípio passado 'limpou'.

But it seems like I’m missing something.

Mas parece que estou perdendo alguma coisa.

I have the receiver but not the doer.

Eu tenho o receptor, mas não o executor.

It's okay.

Tudo bem.

Like we mentioned before, for some  sentences, you may not have the doer. 

Como mencionamos antes, para algumas frases, você pode não ter o executor.

This is an example of a passive  sentence without the doer. 

Este é um exemplo de uma frase passiva sem o autor.

‘The essay about the economy  was written by the student.’ 

'A redação sobre a economia foi escrita pelo aluno.'

Now, it's okay. I know this is a big sentence. 

Agora, está tudo bem. Eu sei que esta é uma frase grande.

But I know we can do it.

Mas eu sei que podemos fazer isso.

Because “boom” ‘by the student’.

Porque "boom" 'pelo aluno'.

There's our clue.

Aí está a nossa pista.

Also ‘was written’.

Também 'foi escrito'.

We have our past participle and our ‘to be’ verb.

Temos nosso particípio passado e nosso verbo 'ser'.

This is a sentence written in passive voice.

Esta é uma frase escrita na voz passiva.

And our last one. We're almost there. Stay with me. 

E o nosso último. Estamos quase lá. Ficar comigo.

‘The best team won the football game.’ Good job team. 

'O melhor time ganhou o jogo de futebol.' Bom trabalho equipe.

Our team is our doer.

Nossa equipe é nosso fazedor.

What did the team do?

O que a equipe fez?

What's the action?

Qual é a ação?

The team won.

A equipe venceu.

What did they win? They won the football game. 

O que eles ganharam? Eles ganharam o jogo de futebol.

This is definitely a sentence  written in the active voice. 

Esta é definitivamente uma frase escrita na voz ativa.

Ah, good job. That's some good practicing - recognizing  

Bom trabalho. Essa é uma boa prática - reconhecer

Now, let's move on.
