today I am going to correct an error that many of you

I'm gonna tell you how to say and write dates properly.

Now, the main thing that confuses people, is the difference

between American Dates and British Dates.

Americans would say the month first,

then the day,

then the year.

British people however, would say the day first,

So that's the main difference,

I would say my date of birth at the 10th of June 1994

Ja by som povedala dátum môjho narodenia "the 10th of June 1994" (10. júna 1994)

Americans would say June 10th 1994

Američania by povedali "June 10th 1994" (10. júna 1994)

Now another error that people make is that they get confused between cardinal and ordinal numbers.

Ďalšia chyba, ktorú ľudia robia je, že si mýlia základné a radové číslovky.

Here are the cardinal numbers:

Then, we have the ordinal numbers:

Now, the abbreviation of ordinal numbers are as follows: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th.

Naviac, písané skratky pre radové číslovky vyzerajú takto: "1st" (1.), "2nd" (2.), "3rd" (3.), "4th" (4.), "5th" (5.).

And so on.

A tak ďalej.

And we will always use this format when writing out dates in full.

A používame práve tento formát, keď chceme napísať celé dátumy.

It's very rare to see an unabbreviated ordinal number in a written date.

Je veľmi neobvyklé vidieť neskrátenú radovú číslovku v písanej forme dátumu.

This is just waste of space.

Je to jednoducho plýtvanie miestom.

Like many things on this planet.

Another error is that students often forget

Ďalšou chybou je, že študenti často zabúdajú,

that we write months with a capital letter.

Make sure you fully understand the pronunciation of the months of the year.

that's is how you write the date.

takto sa píše dátum.

In English the 10th of June 1994

po anglicky "10th June 1994" (10. júna 1994)

and in American June 10th 1994.

a "po americky" "June 10th 1994" (10. júna 1994)

Now, did you hear me when I read out the British version?

Počuli ste ma ako som prečítala britskú verziu?

It's written 10th June 1994

Je to napísané "10th June 1994" (10. júna 1994),

but I said (the) 10th (of) June 1994.

ale povedala som "(the) 10th (of) June 1994".

So, you don't need to write 'the' and 'of' but you need to say it.

Znamená to, že nepotrebujete písať "the" a "of", ale musíte to povedať.

If you say 'My birthday is 10th June 1994'

Ak poviete "My birthday is 10th June 1994" (Moje narodeniny sú 10. júna 1994)

it sounds a little bit weird, it sounds a bit forced and unnatural.

So you want to say 'My birthday is the 10th of June 1994'

Čiže správne je povedať "My birthday is the 10th of June 1994"

In American English this is not essential.

V americkej angličtine to nie je nutné.

My birthday is June 10th 1994.

"My birthday is June 10th 1994."

Now, something else tend to be really confused, is how to say years.

Niekedy je ale naozaj mätúce, ako povedať roky.

With years before the millennium (1994)

Vieme, že roky pred týmto tisícročím (1994),

we know that we split it up into 2 sections:

Let me get past the year 2000 it starts to get a little bit more complicated.

Ak prejdeme cez rok 2000, začína to byť trochu komplikovanejšie.

Now, there are two acceptable ways of saying the dates:

You can say twenty and then the number

Môžete povedať "twenty" (20) a potom ostatné dve číslovky

although, with the years before two thousand and ten you want to say

We'll say twenty o eight, twenty o nine, twenty ten.

Otherwise, if you say twenty nine, it sounds like

the number 29.

I have a prefer to say the full number. I like to say:

The important thing that you must remember is the 'and'.

It is absolutely essential that you include the 'and' when you say a date starting with the year 2000.

Je veľmi potrebné povedať "and", keď hovoríte dátum od roku 2000 ďalej.

two thousand and one (2001),

"two thousand and one" - dvetisícjedna (2001),

two thousand and ten (2010),

"two thousand and ten" - dvetisícdesať (2010),

two thousand and seventeen (2017).

Now, did you hear I say n, n,

Počuli ste, že hovorím "nnn", "nnn",

I just add an extra syllable and go in, in

two thousand and one,

"two thousand and one" - dvetisícjedna (2001),

two thousand and seventeen

"two thousand and seventeen" - dvetisícsedemnásť (2017)

so I'm using the schwa sound

two thousand and twelve.

"two thousand and twelve" - dvetisícdvanásť (2012)

So, there you have it!
