today I am going to correct an error that many of you

have been making.

Saya akan bagitahu macam mana nak cakap dan tulis tarikh dengan betul.

I'm gonna tell you how to say and write dates properly.

Now, the main thing that confuses people, is the difference

Perkara utama yang mengelirukan kita adalah perbezaan antara tarikh Amerika dan tarikh British.

between American Dates and British Dates.

Americans would say the month first,

Orang Amerika akan cakap BULAN dulu, lepas tu HARI dan kemudian TAHUN.

then the day,

then the year.

British people however, would say the day first,

Bagaimanapun, orang British akan cakap HARI dulu, kemudian BULAN dan TAHUN.

then the month,

then the year.

So that's the main difference,

Itulah perbezaan yang utama.

I would say my date of birth at the 10th of June 1994

Saya akan cakap tarikh lahir saya pada 10hb Jun 1994...

Americans would say June 10th 1994

..orang Amerika akan cakap, Jun 10 1994.

Now another error that people make is that they get confused between cardinal and ordinal numbers.

Lagi satu kesilapan ramai buat adalah mereka keliru antara nombor kardinal dan ordinal.

Ini contoh nombor-nombor kardinal.

Here are the cardinal numbers:

one,

Satu, dua, tiga, empat, lima.

two,

three,

four,

five.

Then, we have the ordinal numbers:

Kita juga ada nombor ordinal.

Pertama, kedua, ketiga, keempat, kelima.

first,

second,

third,

fourth,

fifth.

See the difference?

Nampak perbezaannya?

Ordinal

Now, the abbreviation of ordinal numbers are as follows: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th.

Singkatan untuk nombor-nombor ordinal adalah seperti berikut.

Dan berikutnya.

And so on.

And we will always use this format when writing out dates in full.

Dan kita akan guna format singkatan ini untuk ditulis.

It's very rare to see an unabbreviated ordinal number in a written date.

Sangat jarang kita tengok nombor ordinal dengan ejaan yang penuh pada sesuatu tarikh.

This is just waste of space.

Like many things on this planet.

Another error is that students often forget

Lagi satu kesilapan pelajar selalu buat adalah selalu lupa tulis bulan dengan huruf besar dihadapannya.

that we write months with a capital letter.

Make sure you fully understand the pronunciation of the months of the year.

Pastikan anda betul-betul tahu sebutan bulan dengan betul.

that's is how you write the date.

Jadi, begitulah cara anda tulis tarikh.

In English the 10th of June 1994

Dalam British, kita sebut 10hb Jun 1994. Dan dalam Inggeris Amerika, Jun 10 1994.

and in American June 10th 1994.

Now, did you hear me when I read out the British version?

Anda dengar tak bila saya sebut tarikh dalam British?

It's written 10th June 1994

Ia ditulis 10hb Jun 1994.

Tapi saya sebut, (THE) 10hb (OF) Jun 1994.

but I said (the) 10th (of) June 1994.

So, you don't need to write 'the' and 'of' but you need to say it.

Jadi, anda tak perlu untuk tulis THE dan OF. Tapi anda perlu untuk menyebutnya.

If you say 'My birthday is 10th June 1994'

Kalau anda cakap, um.. tarikh lahir saya pada 10hb Jun 1994, kedengaran sedikit pelik.

it sounds a little bit weird, it sounds a bit forced and unnatural.

So you want to say 'My birthday is the 10th of June 1994'

Jadi anda kena cakap, tarikh lahir saya pada (THE) 10hb (OF) Jun 1994.

In American English this is not essential.

Dalam Inggeris Amerika pula ianya tak apa.

My birthday is June 10th 1994.

Now, something else tend to be really confused, is how to say years.

Lagi satu ramai yang keliru adalah macam mana nak sebut tahun.

With years before the millennium (1994)

Tahun-tahun sebelum era millennium, 1994, kita selalu pisahkan kepada dua bahagian.

we know that we split it up into 2 sections:

18|25 ,

Lapan belas dua puluh lima.

10|66.

Sepuluh enam puluh enam.

10|66 for example

Sebagai contohnya.

Let me get past the year 2000 it starts to get a little bit more complicated.

Sekarang bila dah masuk tahun 2000, ianya mula untuk jadi sedikit rumit.

Now, there are two acceptable ways of saying the dates:

Ada dua cara yang boleh diterima untuk sebut tahun itu.

You can say twenty and then the number

Kita boleh sebut, dua puluh, kemudian diikuti dengan nombor seterusnya.

although, with the years before two thousand and ten you want to say

Atau tahun sebelum 2010, kita kena sebut, kosong sembilan (09).

We'll say twenty o eight, twenty o nine, twenty ten.

Kita sebut, dua puluh kosong lapan (2008), dua puluh kosong sembilan (2009), dua puluh sepuluh (2010).

Sebabnya kalau anda sebut dua puluh sembilan, ia bunyi macam nombor 29 itu sendiri.

Otherwise, if you say twenty nine, it sounds like

the number 29.

So,

you need to say twenty o nine.

Jadi kita kena sebut dua puluh kosong sembilan.

I have a prefer to say the full number. I like to say:

Bagaimanapun saya suka sebut dengan sebutan yang penuh.

Saya suka sebut, dua ribu tujuh belas.

two thousand and seventeen.

The important thing that you must remember is the 'and'.

It is absolutely essential that you include the 'and' when you say a date starting with the year 2000.

two thousand and one (2001),

two thousand and ten (2010),

two thousand and seventeen (2017).

Now, did you hear I say n, n,

I just add an extra syllable and go in, in

two thousand and one,

two thousand and seventeen

so I'm using the schwa sound

two thousand and seventeen,

two thousand and twelve.

So, there you have it!

Jadi, itulah dia.
