today I am going to correct an error that many of you

오늘은 제가 여러분이 많이 해 왔던 실수들을

have been making.

고쳐 드릴 거예요.

I'm gonna tell you how to say and write dates properly.

여러분께 날짜를 알맞게 말하고 쓰는 법을 알려 드릴게요.

Now, the main thing that confuses people, is the difference

사람들을 헷갈리게 만드는 주요 원인은

between American Dates and British Dates.

미국과 영국의 날짜 말하기 방식의 차이점입니다.

Americans would say the month first,

미국인들은 달을 먼저 말하고,

then the day,

날을 말하고,

then the year.

연도를 말합니다.

British people however, would say the day first,

하지만 영국인들은 날을 먼저 말하고,

then the month,

달을 말하고,

then the year.

연도를 말합니다.

So that's the main difference,

그게 주요 차이점입니다.

I would say my date of birth at the 10th of June 1994

저는 제 생일을 10th of June 1994라고 말합니다.

Americans would say June 10th 1994

미국인들은 June 10th 1994라고 말합니다.

Now another error that people make is that they get confused between cardinal and ordinal numbers.

그리고 사람들이 하는 실수 중 다른 하나는 기수와 서수 사이에서 헷갈린다는 점입니다.

Here are the cardinal numbers:

다음이 기수들입니다.

one,

one,

two,

three,

two,

three,

four,

five.

four,

five.

Then, we have the ordinal numbers:

그 다음으로는, 서수입니다.

first,

second,

first,

second,

third,

third,

fourth,

fourth,

fifth.

fifth.

See the difference?

차이점이 보이시나요?

Cardinal

Ordinal

서수

Now, the abbreviation of ordinal numbers are as follows: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th.

그리고 기수의 축약형들은 다음과 같습니다. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th.

그리고 쭉 이런 식으로 됩니다.

And so on.

And we will always use this format when writing out dates in full.

영국인들은 날짜를 전부 쓸 때 이 형식을 지켜서 날짜를 씁니다.

It's very rare to see an unabbreviated ordinal number in a written date.

축약형이 아닌 서수로 날짜를 쓰는 것은 매우 드뭅니다.

This is just waste of space.

그냥 공간 낭비죠.

Like many things on this planet.

지구의 많은 것들처럼요.

Another error is that students often forget

학생들이 자주 잊어버리는 다른 실수로는

that we write months with a capital letter.

달을 쓸 때 대문자로 쓰는 것입니다.

Make sure you fully understand the pronunciation of the months of the year.

So,

자,

that's is how you write the date.

이렇게 날짜를 쓰는 겁니다.

In English the 10th of June 1994

영국식으로는 the 10th of June 1994

and in American June 10th 1994.

미국식으로는 June 10th 1994입니다.

Now, did you hear me when I read out the British version?

자, 제가 영국식으로 말할 때 들으셨나요?

It's written 10th June 1994

10th June 1994로 쓰여집니다.

but I said (the) 10th (of) June 1994.

하지만 전 the10th of June 1994라고 말했어요.

So, you don't need to write 'the' and 'of' but you need to say it.

즉, 'the'와 'of'는 쓸 필요는 없지만 말은 해야 합니다.

If you say 'My birthday is 10th June 1994'

만약 'My birthday is 10th June 1994'이라고 말한다면

it sounds a little bit weird, it sounds a bit forced and unnatural.

약간 이상하고 부자연스러우며 억지로 하는 것같이 들립니다.

So you want to say 'My birthday is the 10th of June 1994'

여러분이 '제 생일은 1994년 6월 10일입니다.'라고 하고 싶다고 해 봅시다.

In American English this is not essential.

미국식으로는 필수적이지 않습니다.

My birthday is June 10th 1994.

My birthday is June 10th 1994.

Now, something else tend to be really confused, is how to say years.

자, 그리고 연도를 말하는 것도 헷갈리는 경향이 있습니다.

With years before the millennium (1994)

2000년 이전의 연도를 말할 때는(1994)

we know that we split it up into 2 sections:

두 부분으로 나눠서 얘기한다는 것을 여러분은 아실 겁니다.

18|25 ,

Eighteen, Twentyfive

10|66.

Ten, Sixtysix

10|66 for example

1066이 그 예입니다.

Let me get past the year 2000 it starts to get a little bit more complicated.

2000년을 지나면 복잡해지기 시작합니다.

Now, there are two acceptable ways of saying the dates:

두 가지 방법이 있습니다.

You can say twenty and then the number

Twenty를 먼저 말하고 숫자를 말하는 방법이 있습니다.

although, with the years before two thousand and ten you want to say

하지만 2010년 이전을 말하고 싶으면

o9

o9도 됩니다.

We'll say twenty o eight, twenty o nine, twenty ten.

Twenty o eight, twenty o nine, twenty ten과 같이 말할 수 있습니다.

Otherwise, if you say twenty nine, it sounds like

그 외에, 만약 twenty nine이라고 말한다면

the number 29.

29같이 들립니다.

So,

즉,

you need to say twenty o nine.

Twenty o nine으로 말해야 합니다.

I have a prefer to say the full number. I like to say:

제가 즐겨 말하는 방식으로는

two thousand and seventeen.

Two thousand and seventeen이 있습니다.

The important thing that you must remember is the 'and'.

여러분이 기억하셔야 할 중요한 것은 'and'입니다.

It is absolutely essential that you include the 'and' when you say a date starting with the year 2000.

2000으로 시작하는 날짜를 말할 때는 'and'를 꼭 넣어야 합니다.

two thousand and one (2001),

two thousand and one (2001),

two thousand and ten (2010),

two thousand and ten (2010),

two thousand and seventeen (2017).

two thousand and seventeen (2017).

Now, did you hear I say n, n,

자, 제가 '은, 은'이라고 하는 것을 들으셨나요?

I just add an extra syllable and go in, in

그냥 한 음절(은)을 추가했습니다.

two thousand and one,

two thousand 은 one,

two thousand and seventeen

two thousand 은 seventeen

so I'm using the schwa sound

즉 제가 schwa 발음을 하고 있는 것이죠(schwa는 'ə'입니다-번역자-).

two thousand and seventeen,

two thousand 은(ən) seventeen,

two thousand and twelve.

two thousand 은(ən) twelve.

So, there you have it!
