Ok, so, how to apologise in English

Also, wie entschuldigt man sich auf Englisch...

Part one of this video

Teil 1

Well, the most basic way is...sorry

Naja...also am einfachsten ist einfach ,sorry'.

so sorry is good if you're in a hurry

Das geht ganz gut, wenn ihr es eilig habt.

if you bump into someone on the street

Wenn ihr jemanden auf der Straße anrempelt

or if you step on someone's shoe

oder jemandem auf die Schuhe tretet,

you can just say 'oh sorry', 'sorry'

könnt ihr einfach 'oh sorry' oder 'sorry' sagen.

So, if you want to say a little more than that you can say 'I'm sorry'

Wenn ihr etwas mehr sagen wollt, geht auch 'I'm sorry'.

And if you want to go even further you can put an interesting word in between the 'I'm' and the 'sorry'

Und wenn es sogar noch mehr sein soll, könnt ihr ein interessantes Wort zwischen 'I'm' und 'sorry' setzen.

like 'so', 'incredibly', 'terribly', 'really'

Zum Beispiel 'so', 'incredibly', 'terribly', 'really'... (unglaublich, schrecklich, wirklich)

Oh I'm terribly sorry, Oh I'm so sorry

(Oh, es tut mir schrecklich leid/so leid)

Then, if you actually want someone to forgive you, you can say 'please forgive me'

Wenn ihr wollt, dass euch jemand wirklich verzeiht, könnt ihr 'please forgive me' (Bitte entschuldigen Sie)sagen,

or forgive me for asking but...

oder 'forgive me for asking but...' (Verzeihen Sie die Frage, aber...)

But don't overuse it cos it will sound like you're a bit pathetic

Then we've got 'excuse me'

Dann gibt es noch 'excuse me' (Verzeihung, Entschuldigung),

Now this can be used in a variety of situations

If you need to get past and somebody is blocking your way

Wenn ihr vorbei müsst und euch jemand den Weg versperrt,

you can say 'Oh excuse me, can I just get through?'

könnt ihr sagen 'Oh excuse me, can I just get through?' (Oh, Verzeihung, darf ich kurz vorbei?)

You can also say it when your body lets out some gas

Ihr könnt es auch benutzen, wenn euer Körper...etwas Gas ausstößt.

And also you can use it to get attention

Und ihr könnt es auch benutzen, um Aufmerksamkeit zu bekommen.

So 'excuse me everyone, excuse me, can you listen to me now?'

So sometimes I'll use that in my classes

another that means exactly the same as 'excuse me' but with an additional meaning

Etwas anderes, das genau dasselbe bedeutet wie 'excuse me', aber noch eine weitere Bedeutung hat,

is pardon me

ist 'pardon me'.

Pardon me we can use in the same way as excuse me

Man kann das genauso verwenden wie excuse me,

but also if we want to interrupt a conversation

aber auch, wenn wir ein Gespräch unterbrechen wollen.

So 'Oh, pardon me but can I just butt in here?

So 'Oh, pardon me but can I just butt in here? (Oh, Verzeihung, aber darf ich Sie kurz unterbrechen?)

If you've really done something quite bad or you've really messed up

Wenn ihr etwas ganz schlimmes getan oder etwas echt verhauen habt,

Then you might want to say something a bit stronger

dann wollt ihr vielleicht etwas stärkeres sagen

than sorry so you can say 'I owe you an apology'

als 'sorry'. Dann könnt ihr zum Beispiel 'I owe you an apology (Ich sollte mich bei Ihnen entschuldigen)'

I'd like to apologise

und I'd like to apologise (Ich würde mich gerne entschuldigen) sagen.

and 'apologise' is much stronger and we often use it in written emails

Denn 'apologise' hat eine viel stärkere Bedeutung und wir benutzen es meist in E-Mails.

If you want to send a letter to your boss apologising for your behaviour

Wenn ihr eurem Chef einen Brief schicken wollt, in dem ihr euch für euer Verhalten entschuldigt,

Then you can say 'I sincerely apologise for what happened yesterday'

dann könnt ihr sagen 'I sincerely apologise for what happened yesterday' (Was gestern passiert ist, tut mir aufrichtig leid),

Or..'I take full responsibility for my behaviour'

oder 'I take full responsibility for my behaviour' (Ich übernehme die volle Verantwortung für mein Verhalten).

Let's move on to part 2, which is about how to say sorry for being late

Nun zu Teil 2, in dem es darum geht, wie man sich entschuldigt, wenn man zu spät ist,

because being late is very very rude

denn das ist sehr unhöflich.

In some cultures it's accepted, in England it's not

In einigen Kulturen ist es akzeptiert, in England nicht.

The most basic one is 'Sorry I'm late'

Die grundlegendste ist 'Sorry I'm late' (Entschuldigung, ich bin zu spät).

You can also say 'sorry for being late'

Ihr könnt auch sagen 'sorry for being late' (Entschuldigen Sie die Verspätung/..., dass ich zu spät bin)

Or my personal favourite 'sorry for keeping you waiting'

oder meinen persönlichen Favoriten 'sorry for keeping you waiting' (Entschuldigen Sie, dass Sie auf mich warten mussten)

That one's quite nice

Das ist wirklich schön.

Ok, on to part 3: slang words for sorry

Okay, auf zu Teil 3, 'sorry' in Umgangssprache:

Now if I were you I would only use these with friends, ok? Not in a work or professional situation

Also an eurer Stelle würde ich das nur zu Freunden sagen, okay? Nicht auf Arbeit oder in professionellem Umfeld.

the first one is 'whoops!'

Das erste ist 'Whoops!' (etwa 'hoppla', 'hups'),

Ok so maybe you've dropped someone's phone and you go 'Oh, whoops!'

wenn ihr beispielsweise jemandes Handy fallen lassen habt und dann sagt 'Oh, whoops!' .

Another one you can say is 'Oh, my bad!'

Was ihr auch sagen könnt, ist 'Oh, my bad!' (Oh, mein Fehler),

that's another way of saying 'Whoops, sorry'

das ist eine andere Art, 'Whoops, sorry' zu sagen.

And the last one which is a terrible word that you shouldn't use

this comes from the texting culture

Ok, and soz is a word that normally you will see in text messages

Ok part 4: bad news

Okay, Teil 4: schlechte Nachrichten

Ok so maybe someone's pet's died, maybe someone's lost a family member

Wenn etwa jemandes Haustier oder ein Familienmitglied verstorben ist,

or maybe someone didn't get a job or something

oder jemand einen Job nicht bekommen hat oder so.

So in this case you can say 'I'm so sorry to hear that'

In dem Fall könnt ihr sagen 'I'm so sorry to hear that' (Tut mir leid, das zu hören).

You wouldn't just want to say 'Aaah...sorry...'

Ihr würdet nicht nur 'Aaah...sorry...' sagen wollen.

No..I'm so sorry to hear that or 'I'm so sorry to hear that you didn't get the job'

Nein, 'I'm so sorry to hear that' oder 'I'm so sorry to hear that you didn't get the job' (Tut mir leid, zu hören, dass du den Job nicht bekommen hast),

or 'I'm so sorry to hear about your dog'

oder 'I'm so sorry to hear about your dog' (Es tut mir so leid, das mit deinem Hund zu hören).

If someone has died you can say 'I'm sorry for your loss'

Wenn jemand gestorben ist, kann man sagen 'I'm sorry for your loss' (Ihr/Dein Verlust tut mir leid).

ok...that's a very normal thing to say at funerals

Okay, das ist eine ganz normale Sache, die man auf Trauerfeiern sagt.

So whilst you're saying sorry, your body language is very important

Auch ist die Körpersprache wichtig, während ihr 'sorry' sagt.

If you realise you've done something wrong

Wenn ihr merkt, dass ihr etwas falsch gemacht habt,

Maybe open your eyes wide and put your hand over your mouth

reißt vielleicht die Augen auf und legt die Hand auf den Mund

like 'ah! sorry'...like this

etwa so.

It's very important to maintain eye contact so that you look sincere

Es ist sehr wichtig, Augenkontakt zu halten, damit ihr ehrlich ausseht,

Like you really mean what you're saying

als würdet ihr wirklich meinen, was ihr sagt.

If you want to make your apology look even more sincere

Wenn ihr wollt, dass eure Entschuldigung noch aufrichtiger wirkt,

Then whilst you're saying it you can put your hand on your heart

dann könnt ihr die Hand auf's Herz legen, während ihr sprecht.

I'm honestly so sorry for what I did yesterday.

Was ich gestern getan habe, tut mir wirklich leid.

And that's just a way of showing that you are honestly apologising for what you did

Das ist einfach eine Art zu zeigen, dass es euch wirklich leid tut, was ihr getan habt.

Finally, what can you do if just are just not enough

Letztlich, was könnt ihr tun, wenn Worte einfach nicht ausreichen?

Ok, if you've done something so terrible or you've messed up so badly

Also wenn ihr etwas so schreckliches getan oder etwas so vermasselt habt,

that sorry doesn't cut it

dass 'sorry' es nicht wiedergutmacht.

Well the most common way to say sorry without saying the word 'sorry'

Also die häufigste Art, sich zu entschuldigen, ohne 'sorry' zu sagen,

in England is to give flowers

ist in England das Überreichen von Blumen,

to give a bottle of wine

einer Flasche Wein

or to give a handwritten card

oder einer handschriftlichen Karte.
