Confusing English Verbs | GO & COME

If I put these verbs in front of you, you'd probably tell me

that they're simple!

They're easy! You know them, right?

These are simple verbs.

Aquests són verbs senzills.

But they are quite similar to each other.

It could be hard to decide which one to use, sometimes.

So in this lesson, we'll take a closer look

Am I going?

Or am I coming?

These two verbs both describe movement between

the person speaking and someone else.

Or something else.

Or alguna altra cosa.

But the difference is in the direction of the movement.

Però la diferència està en la direcció del moviment.

When you use come,

Quan utilitzem 'come' (venir),

the movement is from somewhere else

el moviment és des d'algun altre lloc

to where the speaker is.

a on és l'orador.

And when I say somewhere else,

I quan dic 'algun altre lloc',

that could be the other side of the world,

podria ser a l'altre banda del món,

or it could just be the other side of the room.

o podria tan sols ser a l'altre costat de l'habitació.

It doesn't matter!

No té importància!

What is important is the direction of the movement.

El que és important és la direcció del moviment.

From somewhere, to the speaker.

Des d'algun lloc, a l'orador.

So in this case, it's me.

So it's from somewhere, to the speaker.

Així doncs és des d'algun lloc, a l'orador.

Are you coming to our house for dinner tonight?

Are you coming to Melbourne next month?

Vindràs a Melbourne el mes que ve?

Tell me when you're coming to Australia.

Digues-m'ho quan vinguis a Austràlia.

Go is usually used when the movement happens in the

'Go' (anar), normalment s'utilitza quan el moviment passa en

opposite direction.

From, where the speaker is

Des d'on és l'orador

to another place.

a un altre lloc.

Are you going to Thailand for the holidays?

Aniràs a Tailandia per vacances?

So here, the speaker lives somewhere else,

Aquí, l'orador viu en algun altre lloc,

not in Thailand.

no a Tailandia.

And they're not in Thailand at the time of speaking.

Are you going to Ben's party on Friday?

So that's from the place, where you are

or you usually are, to Ben's party.

Now if I was at Ben's party and I called you,

I could say,

are you coming to Ben's party?

So I'm asking if you'll move

from the place where you are, to Ben's party.

So I used come.

So far, so good, right?

Now you might be talking about another person,

someone who is not the speaker

or the listener.

You're talking about other people.

Or something else.

O d'alguna altra cosa.

And this is where things can get a little tricky!

I aquí és on les coses poden complicar-se una mica!

Because you can use either come or go

Perquè podeu utilitzar tant 'venir' com 'anar'

Look at this example.

Mireu aquest exemple.

My mum came to help me.

La meva mare va venir a ajudar-me.

So this is simple,

Aquest és simple,

because I'm part of this activity.

perquè jo sóc part de l'activitat.

She came to me.

Ella va venir a mi.

But here, my mum went to help my brother.

Però aquí, 'La meva mare va anar a ajudar el meu germà'.

My mum came to help my brother.

'La meva mare va venir a ajudar el meu germà'.

Now both of these sentences are correct.

Ara ambdues d'aquestes frases són correctes.

I could use either come or go.

Jo podria utilitzar tant 'venir' com 'anar'.

But it depends on whose viewpoint I take.

Però depèn de qui prenc el punt de vista.

Which person, who's involved in the activity

Sobre quina persona, que està involucrada en l'activitat,

am I describing or giving information about?

estic descrivint o donant informació?

You use go when you're using the viewpoint

Utilitzeu 'anar' quan fem servir el punt de vista

of the person doing the action.

de la persona que fa l'acció.

My mum went to help my brother.

'La meva mare va anar a ajudar el meu germà'.

My mum is doing the action.

'La meva mare' està fent l'acció.

And you use come,

I utilitzeu 'anar',

when you use the receiver's viewpoint,

quan fem servir el punt de vista del receptor,

the person who is receiving the action.

la persona que està rebent l'acció.

My mum came to help my brother.

'La meva mare va venir a ajuda el meu germà'.

So my brother is receiving the action.

Doncs 'el meu germà' està rebent l'acció.

So we've used come.

Doncs hem fet servir 'venir'.

Now these two verbs are made much clearer

Ara aquests dos verbs queden molt més clars

with a door.

amb una porta.

'Come in' and 'go in' are both ways to instruct someone

'Come in' i 'go in' son dues maneres d'instar a algú

to enter a room or a building.

a entrar a una habitació o a un edifici.

But, there's a difference!

Però, hi ha una diferència!

So now both you and I are outside together.

Ara, vosaltres i jo estem a fora junts.

So I can say to you, "let's go in"

Per tant puc dir-vos, 'Anem dins'

Let's go from where we are,

Anem des d'on som,

to another place, or inside.

Or when I'm inside, and you're outside,

I can say "Come in"

Move from where you are, towards me.

Come inside the house.

Okay so let's change the context.

OK! Anem a canviar el context.

Are you coming to Sarah's wedding?

So this suggests,

Això suggereix,

that the speaker will also be at the wedding.

Are you going to Sarah's wedding?

Aniràs a la boda de la Sara?

Now this suggests that the speaker

may be not going there.

Or maybe they haven't decided yet.

Are you going to visit your sister?

So that's in a place that is away from the listener's

Are you coming to visit your sister?

And here, we're being a bit more specific.

The listener is in a different place.

And probably the speaker too.

So there you have it!
