So which one is it then? Each or every?

It's pretty easy to confuse these two words.

من السهل جداً أن تحتار بينهما

They look similar, they sound similar

تبدوان متشابهتين

but they're not always used in the same way.

So in this lesson, we'll go over the subtle

'Each' and 'every' can both be used with singular nouns.

(أي) و(جميع) يمكن استخدامهما مع العلم المفرد

All of these nouns are singular, right?

كل هذه الأعلام مفردة، حسنا؟

It's just one person or one thing.

إما أنها شخص واحد أو شيء واحد

So the words 'each' and 'every' can be used

إذن كلمة (أي) و (جميع) تستخدم

with singular nouns that are part of a group

مع علم مفرد يكون جزءا من مجموعة

but there is a subtle difference.

لكن هناك فرق خفي

When we use 'each', it emphasises or it puts more

عندما نستعمل (أي)، فإنها تُشدد أو تضع

attention on the individual.

انتباهاً أكثر على الفرد

The one person or the one thing.

الشخص الواحد أو الشيء الواحد

More than one person came to the dinner party.

أكثر من شخص واحد حضر إلى حفل العشاء

In fact, there was a whole group of people

في الواقع، هناك مجموعة كاملة من الناس

who came to the dinner party.

الذين حضروا حفل العشاء

But each singular individual person bought a dish

لكن كل شخص بمفرده أحضر طبقا

or a plate of food to share, right?

أو مشاركة للطعام، حسنا؟

So he bought a dish,

إذن هو أحضر طبقا

she bought dessert,

هي أحضرت حلى

she bought a salad,

هي أحضرت سلطه

he bought some cheese and biscuits,

هو أحضر بعض الجبن والبسكويت

right? So everyone has brought something.

حسناً؟ إذن كل أحد منهم أحضر شيئاً

Now let's compare this to 'every'.

الآن لنقارن هذا بـ (every)

'Every' refers to a group of individual objects

(جميع) تشير إلى مجموعة من الأشياء الفردية

or people as one group altogether, right?

أو أناس كمجموعة معاً, حسناً؟

The attention is on the group as a whole so

الانتباه أو التركز على المجموعة ككل

So a group of people came to the dinner party

إذن مجموعة من الناس أتوا إلى حفل العشاء

and all of these people brought a dish

و كل من هؤلاء الناس أحضر طبقاً

but by using 'every', I'm putting emphasis on

لكن باستخدام (every) أنا أصب اهتمامي

the group as a whole, right?

على المجموعة ككل

Everybody here bought a dish.

كل شخص هنا أحضر طبقاً

Now in many situations, just like my example

الآن في عدد من الحالات , كمثالي

about the dinner party, 'each' and 'every'

حول حفل العشاء, ( each ) و ( every )

can be used interchangeably with just a

بالإمكان استخدامهما بطريقة تبادلية مع

small difference in meaning, right?

اختلاف صغير في المعنى, حسناً

You could use either of them and the difference is

بإمكانك استعمال أي منهما والاختلاف

very subtle.

خفيٌ جدا

But let's look at a few more examples to help

لكن لنطلع على المزيد من الأمثلة لتساعد

make that clear.

على توضيح ذلك

So I'm putting all business owners together

لقد وضعت كل مُلاك الأعمال مع بعضهم

in one group there and I'm making a generalisation

في مجموعة واحدة و جعلت عموماً

about the group - all business owners.

حول المجموعة - كل ملاك الأعمال-

And I'm saying that as a group,

وقلت ذلك كمجموعة

all of those business owners are clever.

كل من هؤلاء الملاك ذكي

So here I'm talking about the individual teachers

فهنا أنا أتحدث عن معلمين أفراد

at our school, each one of them is creative.

في مدرستنا , أي واحد منهم هو مبدع

Not all teachers in general,

ليس كل المعلمين في العموم

not the group together, but each teacher

ليس المجموعة مجتمعة, لكن كل معلم

separately at the school is creative.

بشكل منفرد في المدرسة مبدع

Before we move on, I want to point out something

قبل أن نمضي قدما, أريد الإشارة إلى شيء

really important, something you might have been

غاية في الأهمية , شيء قد تكونون

thinking about already.

تفكرون به الآن

But did you notice in my earlier examples that I wrote

هل لاحظتم في مثالي الأخير كتبت

'everyone' instead of 'every one'?

every one بدلاً من everyone

So if you want to talk about a group of people

فإذا أردت الحديث عن مجموعة من الناس

as a whole, every person

ككل, كل شخص

it's correct to use 'every one' or 'every body', right?

يكون صحيحاً لو استخدمت every one أو every body حسناً؟

Every person is every one or every body.

كل شخص تعني كل واحد أو كل أحد

Now 'every one' written in two words,

الآن (كل واحد) تكتب كلمتين

it actually puts more attention on the individuals

هي في الواقع تضع انتباهاً أكبر على الأفراد

in the group and so it becomes a synonym

في المجموعة لذا هي تأتي بشبه

closer to 'each', right?

أقرب إلى each, حسناً؟

Let's think of an example.

لنفكر في مثال

At school, did you have a teacher that you were kind of

في المدرسة, هل مر عليك معلم نوعاً ما

scared of? Like imagine them saying:

يخيفك؟ كذاك الذي يقول

Right? The emphasis is on the individual.

حسناً؟ التشديد على الأفراد

But if they said:

لكن لو قالوا:

then the emphasis is on the group, right?

فسيكون تشديد التركيز على المجموعة , حسناً؟

And it's a little less scary. It's a subtle difference

ومخيفة أقل. هذا اختلاف خفي

but it's quite powerful in meaning.

لكنه يعطي تأثيراً قوياً في المعنى

Notice as well that even though we're talking about

لاحظ أنه حتى وإن كان حديثنا حول

a group of people, 'everyone' and 'everybody'

مجموعة من الناس, everyone و everybody

use a singular verb form

نستعمل صيغة فعل مفرد

because we're talking about the group

لأننا نتحدث عن المجموعة

as a singular thing, right?

كشيء مفرد, حسناً؟

Not all of the individuals in it

ليس كل الأفراد فيها

but we're talking about the group, right?

لكن نتحدث عن المجموعة ذاتها, حسناً؟

A nice trick to check if you should be using 'everyone'

هناك خدعة لطيفة لتتحقق ما إذا كنت ستستخدم everyone

or 'every one' is to see if everybody works

أو every one وهي أن ترى ما إذا عملت everybody

in that sentence because then 'everyone' with one word

في تلك الجملة لأنه عندها everyone بكلمة واحدة

is also correct.

هي أيضاً صحيحة

If everybody doesn't work in the sentence then

أما إذا لم تعمل everybody في الجملة فستكون

'every one' with two words

بكلمتين

is the correct option, right? Let's look at an example.

هي الخيار الصحيح , حسناً؟ لنطلع على بعض الأمثلة

Right we can say:

حسناً يمكننا أن نقول

So let's do a quick recap before we move on.

إذن سنقوم بمراجعة سريعة قبل المضي قدماً

We use 'each' and 'every' with singular nouns.

نحن نستخدم each و every مع العلم المفرد

'Each' puts more emphasis on the individual

(each) تضع اهتماماً أكبر على الفرد

within the group

في المجموعة

and 'every' puts our attention on the group as a whole.

و every تضع اهتماماً أكبر على المجموعة ككل

Got it?

فهمتم؟

Good!

جيد!!

But there's still some important things

لكن بقي هناك شيء مهم

that you need to know.

وعليكم معرفته

So when you're talking about exactly two things,

وهو أنه عدما تتحدث عن شيئين بالتحديد

you can use 'each',

تستطيع فقط استخدام each

not when you're talking about three or four or ten things.

ليس عندما تتحدث عن ثلاثة أو أربعة أو عشرة أشياء

Only when you're talking about two.

فقط عندما يكون حديثك حلو شيئين

I've got two ears,

لدي أذنان فقط

so I can use 'each' to talk about my ears

فأنا أستطيع استخدام each للحديث عن أذنيَّ

but I can't use 'every', alright?

لكن لا أستطيع استخدام every , حسناً

I have an earring in every ear.

لدي أقراط في جميع أذني

it sounds really quite strange like,

تبدو غريبة نوعاً ما نحو

how many ears do you have?

كم أذناً لدي؟

Earlier I told you that 'each' and 'every' are usually used

مؤخراً قلت لكم بأن each و every تستخدمان عادة

with singular nouns

مع العلم المفرد

but there is a little exception or a rule

لكن هناك استثناء أو قاعدة

that we've got to talk about here.

سنتحدث عنها هنا

'Every' can't be used with plural nouns

لا يمكن استخدام every مع اسم الجمع

but 'each' can be used with plural nouns

لكن each يمكن استخدامها مع اسم الجمع

with a small change in form.

مع تغيير بسيط في شكلها

To use 'each' with plural nouns,

لاستخدام each مع أسماء الجمع

you need to add the word 'of'.

أنت بحاجة إلى إضافة كلمة (of)

We can't say:

لا يمكننا أن نقول

But we can say:

لكن يكننا أن نقول

Now there's not much difference in meaning

الآن لا يوجد فرق كبير في المعنى

between these two correct sentences

بين هاتين الجملتين الصحيحتين

but it's important to notice that we do include

لكنه من المهم أن ملاحظة أننا نضيف

the article 'the' here.

أدارة التعريف (the) هنا.

It's really important, right? You must use it

هذا مهم جداً, حسناً؟ عليك استخدامها

unless you're using the plural determiners or pronouns

على الأقل لو استخدمت أسماء الإشارة أو الضمائر

like 'us' or 'them'

مثل (نحن) أو (هم)

or 'these' or 'those', we don't need to use the article then.

أو (هذا) أو (هؤلاء), فعندها لن نحتاج (the) التعريفية

Right so let's look at a couple of examples

حسناً, لنطلع على عدد من الأمثلة

of how they're used.

وكيف يمكن استخدامها

It's really important there that we are using our finger

من المهم جداً هنا أن نستخدم أصابعنا هنا

to point at what we're talking about.

للإشارة إلى ما الذي نتحدث عنه

Another useful thing to keep in mind is that 'every'

شيء آخر شائع لنعلمه وهو أن every

is more commonly used with time expressions.

تستخدم بشكل أكبر مع التعبير عن الوقت

Now actually 'each' wouldn't be wrong

طبعاً each لن تكون خاطئة

in either of these sentences. You could use 'each' with

في كل من هاتين الجملتين. يمكنك استخدام each

many of these time expressions

مع عدد من هذه التعبيرات

but 'every' is just more common and it usually sounds

لكن هي فقط أكثر شيوعاً

a little more natural,

و أكثر طبيعية

The difference is very subtle.

الفرق خفي جداً

That's fine.

لا بأس بهذا

It's a little better, it sounds a little more natural.

هذه أفضل قليلاً , تبدو أكثر واقعية

So right now it's time to see if you've been

والآن حان الوقت لنرى ما إذا كنتم

paying attention through this lesson because

we're about to practise. So I want you to see if you can

complete each of the sentences that you see up here

with the right word.

You have to think about the subtle differences.

عليك أن تفكر في الاختلافات الخفية

So let's assume that the emphasis is on the

لنفترض أن التشديد على

individual cup here.

الأكواب هنا

So 'each' would be correct because of the singular noun.

إذن each ستكون هي الصحيحة لأنه علَم مفرد

What about this one?

ماذا عن هذه؟

Yep, 'every' because Saturday morning is

نعم. every لأن السبت صباحاً

a time expression. What about this one?

هو ظرف زمان. ماذا عن هذه.

It has to be 'each', doesn't it?

يجب أن تكون each, أليس كذلك؟

Because there are exactly two wrists.

لأنه لدي بالتحديد معصمان

Perfect.

ممتاز

I guess that has to be 'every', right?

أظن بأن هذا يجب أن يكون every

Because we're talking about the group as a whole.

لأننا نتحدث عن المجموعة ككل

And so when we're talking about everyone as a group,

و عندما نتحدث عن كل أحد كمجموعة

you need to use 'every'.

فأنت بحاجة لاستخدام every

Alright in this last example here,

حسناً هنا في المثال الأخير

let's keep our attention on the house as a whole, okay?

لنضع اهتمامنا على البيت ككل

Our emphasis and our attention is on the whole house

تشديدنا أو تركيزنا على البيت ككل

not the individual rooms inside.

ليس على الغرف مفردة

So 'every' would be perfect

لذا every ستكون مثالية

but of course, you could use 'each' if you were

لكن بالطبع نستطيع استخدام each لو كان

emphasising each of the individual rooms.

تشديدنا على كل غرفة منفردة لوحدها

All right I do have one more final question for you.

حسناً, لدي سؤال واحد أخير

Do you remember at the start of this video when I said

هل تذكرون عند بدايتي لهذا الفيديو قلت

that I'm here to answer each and every one

بأنني سأجيب each و every واحد

of your English questions?

من أسئلتكم حول الإنجليزية؟

So in that sentence, which option is the best option?

ففي تلك الجملة , أي خيار هو الخيار الأفضل؟

It's a trick question because you could use either okay?

هذا سؤال مخادع لأنه بإمكانك استخدام كليهما, تمام؟

But you can also use them together like this.

لكن بإمكانك استخدامهما أيضاً مع بعضهما بهذا الشكل

The phrase 'each and every' is really common

الصيغة each and every شائعة جداً

in spoken English and it puts all of the emphasis on

في اللسان الإنجليزي وتضع التركيز

the whole group but every single person in the group.

على كل المجموعة بالإضافة إلى كل فرد في المجموعة

So it's like a combination, right?

فهي إذن جامعة, حسناً؟

And it's a fixed expression that you'll see

وهي تعبير صحيح ستراه

from time to time

من وقت لآخر

and you'll see both of these words together and that's

وسترى هاتين الكلمتين معاً وهذا

perfectly acceptable

مقبول بشكل كبير

especially when you are trying to emphasise

خصوصاً عندما تحاول التشديد

each and every person in the group is important.

على كل و جميع الأشخاص في المجموعة , هذا مهم
