My search is always to find ways to chronicle,

Because I really believe that we're never more beautiful

As Chris said, I grew up in Nigeria

with a whole generation -- in the '80s --

of students who were protesting a military dictatorship, which has finally ended.

So it wasn't just me, there was a whole generation of us.

But what I've come to learn

is that the world is never saved in grand messianic gestures,

In South Africa, they have a phrase called Ubuntu.

ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയില് ഉബുണ്ടുവെന്നൊരു പ്രയോഗമുണ്ട്.

Ubuntu comes out of a philosophy that says,

ഉബുണ്ടുവിന്റെ തത്വശാസ്ത്രം പറയുന്നത് എന്റെ

the only way for me to be human is for you to reflect

മനുഷ്യത്വം എനിക്കു മനസിലാവുന്നതു നിങ്ങളതെന്റെ മേല്

my humanity back at me.

But if you're like me, my humanity is more like a window.

I don't really see it, I don't pay attention to it

Then suddenly I see it, and usually, it's never good.

It's usually when I'm cussing in traffic

So what Ubuntu really says

ഉബുണ്ടു നമ്മോടു പറയുന്നതു,

is that there is no way for us to be human without other people.

മറ്റൊരാളില്ലാത്തിടത്തു നമുക്കു മനുഷ്യനാവാനാവില്ല.

It's really very simple, but really very complicated.

ഇതു വളരെ ലളിതവും അതേസമയം സന്കീര്ണ്ണവുമാണു.

So, I thought I should start with some stories.

ഞാന് കഥകള് ആരംഭിക്കട്ടെ.

I should tell you some stories about remarkable people,

ഇവ ഏതെന്കിലും വളരെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടവരെക്കുറിച്ചാവണം,

so I thought I'd start with my mother.

And she was dark, too.

My mother was English.

My parents met in Oxford in the '50s,

and my mother moved to Nigeria and lived there.

She was five foot two, very feisty and very English.

This is how English my mother is -- or was, she just passed.

She came out to California, to Los Angeles, to visit me,

സാല്മണുണ്ട്, കിടിലം”. അമ്മ എന്റെ

It's totally rad."

നേരെതിരിഞ്ഞു

And my mother turned to me and said,

ചോദിച്ചു, “ഇവനേതു ഭാഷയാ

"What language is he speaking?"

പറയണ്തു?”

(Laughter)

(ചിരി)

I said, "English, mum."

ഞാന് പറഞ്ഞു “ഇംഗ്ലീഷുതന്നെ അമ്മേ.”

And she shook her head and said,

തലകുലുക്കി പ്രതിഷേധിച്ചു അവര് പറഞ്ഞു

"Oh, these Americans. We gave them a language,

“ഈ അമേരിക്കക്കാര്, നമ്മള് അവര്ക്കൊരു ഭാഷ കൊടുത്തു.

why don't they use it?"

അവര്ക്കത് ഉപയോകിച്ചചാലെന്താ ?

(Laughter)

(ചിരി)

So, this woman, who converted from the Church of England

ഇതാണെന്റെയമ്മ, ചര്ച്ചോഫ് ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടില് നിന്നും

to Catholicism when she married my father --

എന്റെയപ്പനെ കെട്ടുവാന് കത്തോലിക്കയായവര്,

and there's no one more rabid than a Catholic convert --

ഇതുപോലെയൊരു തീവ്രവാദി കത്തോലിക്കാകാരി വേറെയുണ്ടാവില്ല

decided to teach in the rural areas in Nigeria,

particularly among Igbo women,

the Billings ovulation method,

which was the only approved birth control by the Catholic Church.

But her Igbo wasn't too good.

So she took me along to translate.

I was seven.

So, here are these women,

who never discuss their period with their husbands,

and here I am telling them, "Well, how often do you get your period?"

ഞാനിതാഇവിടെ. "നിങ്ങളുടെ ആര്ത്തവമെങ്ങിനെ?"

(Laughter)

(ചിരി).

And, "Do you notice any discharges?"

നിങ്ങള് എന്തെന്കിലും “ഒഴുക്കു” കാണുന്നുണ്ടൊ?

(Laughter)

(ചിരി)

And, "How swollen is your vulva?"

നിങ്ങളുടെ ജനനേന്ദ്രിയം എത്രമാത്രം വീര്ത്തിരിക്കുന്നു.

(Laughter)

(ചിരി)

She never would have thought of herself as a feminist,

അവരൊരിക്കലും ഒരു സ്‌ത്രീ വിമോചനവാദിയായി സ്വയം കണ്ടില്ല

my mother, but she always used to say,

പക്ഷെ പലപ്പോഴും പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു,

"Anything a man can do, I can fix."

And when my father complained about this situation,

എന്റെ അച്ഛന് പലപ്പോഴും 7 വയസുള്ള

where she's taking a seven-year-old boy

എന്നെ ജനന നിയന്ത്രണം പഠിപ്പിക്കാന്

to teach this birth control, you know,

കൊണ്ടു പോവുന്നതിനു എതിരായിരുന്നു

he used to say, "Oh, you're turning him into --

“നീയവനെയൊരു പെണ്ണാക്കി മാറ്റും”

you're teaching him how to be a woman."

അമ്മ മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു

My mother said, "Someone has to."

“ആരെന്കിലും അങ്ങിനെ ചെയ്യണം.”

(Laughter)

(ചിരി)

This woman -- during the Biafran war,

ഇവര് – ബിയഫ്രാന് യുദ്ധതില്

we were caught in the war.

ഞങ്ങളുമകപ്പെട്ടു പോയിരുന്നു.

It was my mother with five little children.

5 ചെറിയമക്കളുള്ള് ഇവരാണെന്റെയമ്മ.

It takes her one year, through refugee camp after refugee camp,

പലപല അഭയാര്ഥി ക്യാമ്പുകള്ക്കവസാനം ഒരുവര്ഷത്തിനുശേഷമാണ്

to make her way to an airstrip where we can fly out of the country.

ഞങ്ങള് രാജ്യത്തിനു പുറത്തുകടക്കാനാവുന്ന ഒരു വീമാനത്താവളത്തിലെത്തുന്നതു.

At every single refugee camp, she has to face off soldiers

ഓരൊ അഭയാര്ഥിക്യാമ്പിലും 9 വയസുള്ള എന്റെ മാര്ക്കു

who want to take my elder brother Mark, who was nine,

ചേട്ടനെ കുട്ടിപട്ടാളക്കരനാക്കനുള്ള പട്ടാള

and make him a boy soldier.

ശ്രമത്തെ അമ്മതടഞ്ഞു.

Can you imagine this five-foot-two woman,

ആര്ക്കു സ്വപ്നംകാണാനാവും 5 അടി ഉയരമുള്ള അവര് തോക്കേന്തി

standing up to men with guns who want to kill us?

ഞങ്ങളെ കൊല്ലാൻ നിന്നവരെ എതിര്ത്ത് നിന്നുവെന്നു ?

All through that one year,

എന്നിട്ടൊന്നും ആവര്ഷം മുഴുവന് അവര്

my mother never cried one time, not once.

ഒരിക്കല്പോലും കരഞ്ഞില്ല, കണ്ണുനനച്ചില്ല.

But when we were in Lisbon, in the airport,

പക്ഷെ ഞങ്ങള് ലിസ്ബണ് വീമാനത്താവളത്തില്

about to fly to England,

ലണ്ടനിലേക്കുള്ള് വീമാനം കാത്തുനില്ക്കുമ്പോള്,

this woman saw my mother wearing this dress,

which had been washed so many times it was basically see through,

with five really hungry-looking kids,

came over and asked her what had happened.

ചോദിച്ചു, എന്തുണ്ടായിയെന്നു.

And she told this woman.

അവരുടെ കഥകേട്ടു ആസ്ത്രീ

And so this woman emptied out her suitcase

തന്റെ പെട്ടിയിലെ വസ്ത്രങ്ങള് മുഴുവന്

and gave all of her clothes to my mother, and to us,

അമ്മക്കു കൊടുത്തു,

and the toys of her kids, who didn't like that very much, but --

കുട്ടികള്ക്കു പാവകളും - അതു ഞങ്ങള്ക്കിഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടില്ല

(Laughter) --

(ചിരി)

that was the only time she cried.

അപ്പോള് അമ്മകരഞ്ഞു, ഒരിക്കല് മാത്രം.

And I remember years later, I was writing about my mother,

and I asked her, "Why did you cry then?"

And she said, "You know, you can steel your heart

against any kind of trouble, any kind of horror.

മറച്ചുവക്കാനാവും എല്ലാപ്ര്ശനങ്ങളിലും ക്രൂരതയിലും നിന്നും

But the simple act of kindness from a complete stranger

ഒളിപ്പിക്കാം. പക്ഷെ നന്മയുടെ ചെറിയ

will unstitch you."

കര്മ്മങ്ങള് നമ്മുടെ കെട്ടഴിക്കുന്നു”.

The old women in my father's village, after this war had happened,

യുദ്ധത്തിനുശേഷം അച്ഛന്റെ ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ സ്ത്രീകള്

memorized the names of every dead person,

മരിച്ചവരുടെ പേരുകള് ഒര്മ്മവെച്ചു,

and they would sing these dirges, made up of these names.

പേരുപയോഗിചുണ്ടാക്കിയ വിലാപഗാനങ്ങള് .പാടി.

Dirges so melancholic that they would scorch you.

മരവിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വിലാപഗാനം.

And they would sing them only when they planted the rice,

അവരിതുപാടിയത് നെല്ലുവിതക്കുമ്പോഴായിരുന്നു,

as though they were seeding the hearts of the dead

ഓരോവിത്തിനുമൊപ്പം ഓരൊ ഹൃദയങ്ങളെ

into the rice.

വിതക്കുന്നപോലെ.

But when it came for harvest time,

പക്ഷെ കൊയ്ത്തുകാലത്തവര്

they would sing these joyful songs,

സന്തോഷഗാനങ്ങള് പാടി, അതില്

that were made up of the names of every child

ആ വര്ഷം ജനിച്ച എല്ലാകുട്ടീകളുടെയും

who had been born that year.

പേരുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

And then the next planting season, when they sang the dirge,

അടുത്തവര്ഷത്തിലെ വിലാപ ഗാനത്തില്നിന്നും

they would remove as many names of the dead

കഴിഞ്ഞവര്ഷം ജനിച്ചയ്ത്രയും പേരുടെ

that equaled as many people that were born.

എണ്ണം കുറച്ചുകളഞ്ഞു.

And in this way, these women enacted a lot of transformation,

അങ്ങിനെ അവര് പരിവര്ത്തനമുണ്ടാക്കി

beautiful transformation.

Did you know, that before the genocide in Rwanda,

the word for rape and the word for marriage

was the same one?

But today, women are rebuilding Rwanda.

Did you also know that after apartheid,

നിങ്ങള്ക്കറിയുമായിരുന്നോ, വര്ണ വിവേചനത്തിന്റെ

when the new government went into the parliament houses,

ഒടുവില് പുതിയ സര്ക്കര് ഭരണമേറ്റ് പാര് ലമെന്റ്റിലെത്തിയപ്പോള്

there were no female toilets in the building?

അവിടെ സ്ത്രീകള്ക്കുള്ള മൂത്രപ്പുരകളില്ലായിരുന്നു.

Which would seem to suggest that apartheid

അതായത് വര്ണ വിവേചനം

was entirely the business of men.

ആണുങ്ങളുടെ മാത്രം തൊഴിലായിരുന്നു.

All of this to say, that despite the horror, and despite the death,

women are never really counted.

Their humanity never seems to matter very much to us.

When I was growing up in Nigeria --

and I shouldn't say Nigeria, because that's too general,

but in Afikpo, the Igbo part of the country where I'm from --

there were always rites of passage for young men.

Men were taught to be men in the ways in which we are not women,

that's essentially what it is.

And a lot of rituals involved killing, killing little animals,

progressing along, so when I turned 13 --

and, I mean, it made sense, it was an agrarian community,

somebody had to kill the animals,

there was no Whole Foods you could go and get kangaroo steak at --

നമ്മുടെതുപോലെ “ഹോള് ഫൂഡ്” എന്ന ആശയമൊന്നും അവിടെയില്ല. ഒരു കംഗാരു വറുത്തതൊന്നും വങ്ങാന് കിട്ടില്ലല്ലോ.

so when I turned 13, it was my turn now to kill a goat.

അതായത് 13 വയസായപ്പോള് ആടിനെക്കൊല്ലാനുള്ള് ചുമതല എന്റ്റേതായി.

And I was this weird, sensitive kid, who couldn't really do it,

but I had to do it.

But a friend of mine, called Emmanuel,

And I don't know if you've ever heard a goat, or seen one --

they sound like human beings,

that's why we call tragedies "a song of a goat."

My friend Brad Kessler says that we didn't become human

until we started keeping goats.

Anyway, a goat's eyes are like a child's eyes.

So when I tried to kill this goat and I couldn't,

Emmanuel bent down, he puts his hand over the mouth of the goat,

covers its eyes, so I don't have to look into them,

while I kill the goat.

It didn't seem like a lot, for this guy who'd seen so much,

I was a wimp.

I cried for a very long time.

And afterwards, he didn't say a word.

അവന് ഒരക്ഷരം പോലും പറഞ്ഞില്ല,

He just sat there watching me cry for an hour.

And then afterwards he said to me,

"It will always be difficult, but if you cry like this every time,

Of course, talking about goats makes me think of sheep,

and not in good ways.

So, I was born two days after Christmas.

ഞാന് ജനിച്ചത് ക്രിസ്മസിനു രണ്ടു ദിവസങ്ങള്ക്കു ശേഷമാണ്.

So growing up, you know, I had a cake and everything,

but I never got any presents, because, born two days after Christmas.

So, I was about nine, and my uncle had just come back from Germany,

and we had the Catholic priest over,

And my uncle suddenly says, "Where are Chris' presents?"

And my mother said, "Don't talk about that in front of guests."

അമ്മ വിലക്കി “ഇതൊക്കെ അഥിതികളുടെ മുന്പില് വച്ചു വേണോ.”

But he was desperate to show that he'd just come back,

പക്ഷെ സ്വന്തം തിരിച്ചുവരവ് ആഹ്ളാദിക്കാന് ആഗ്രഹിച്ച അമ്മാവന്

so he summoned me up, and he said,

പക്ഷെ എന്നെ വിളിച്ചുവരുത്തി, എന്നിട്ടുപറഞ്ഞു,

"Go into the bedroom, my bedroom.

“ബെഡ് റൂമില് പോവു, എന്റെ ബെഡ് റൂമില്.

Take anything you want out of the suitcase.

അവിടെ എന്റെ സ്യൂട് കേസില് നിന്നും നിനക്കിഷ്ടമുള്ള സാധനമെടുത്തോളു.

It's your birthday present."

അതു നിന്റെ ജന്മദിന സമ്മാനം.”

I'm sure he thought I'd take a book or a shirt,

എനിക്കുറപ്പുണ്ട്, അദ്ദേഹം വിചാരിച്ചു ഞാനെന്തെന്കിലും ഷര്ട്ടോ, പുസ്തകമോ

but I found an inflatable sheep.

എടുക്കുമെന്നു, പക്ഷെ ഞാനൊരു വീര്പ്പിക്കുന്ന ആടിനെയെടുത്തു.

So, I blew it up and ran into the living room,

my finger where it shouldn't have been,

I was waving this buzzing sheep around,

and my mother looked like she was going to die of shock.

And Father McGetrick was completely unflustered,

just stirred his tea and looked at my mother and said,

My last days in prison, the last 18 months,

എന്റെ തടവു ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അവസാന നാളുകളില്,

my cellmate -- for the last year, the first year of the last 18 months --

അവസാന് 18 മാസം, എന്റ്റെ സഹമുറിയന്

my cellmate was 14 years old.

ഒരു പതുനാലു വയസുകാരാനായിരുന്നു.

The name was John James,

ജോണ് ജെയിംസ് എന്നയിരുന്നു അവന്റെ പേരു,

and in those days, if a family member committed a crime,

അക്കാലത്ത് കുടുംബത്തിലാരെന്കിലും കുറ്റം ചെയ്താല്

the military would hold you as ransom

till your family turned themselves in.

So, here was this 14-year-old kid on death row.

അങ്ങിനെ ആ14 വയസുകാരന് മരണശിക്ഷക്കു വിധിക്കപ്പെട്ട് അവിടെവന്നു.

And not everybody on death row was a political prisoner.

മരണ ശിക്ഷക്കു വിധിക്കപ്പെട്ട എല്ലാവരും രാഷ്ട്രീയ കുറ്റവാളികളല്ലായിരുന്നു

There were some really bad people there.

– ചിലര് തീര്ത്തും മോശപ്പെട്ടവരായിരുന്നു.

And he had smuggled in two comics, two comic books --

അവന് തന്റെ കൂടെ രണ്ടു ചിത്രകഥകളും കടത്തിക്കൊണ്ടു വന്നിരുന്നു –

"Spiderman" and "X-Men."

സ്പൈഡര്മാനും എക്സ്മാനും.

He was obsessed.

അവനേറ്റവും ഇഷ്ട്ടപ്പെട്ടത്.

And when he got tired of reading them,

അവന് വായ്ച്ചു മടുത്തപ്പോള് മരണവിധിയില്

he started to teach the men in death row how to read,

കിടക്കുന്ന സഹകു റ്റവാളികലെ ഈ ചിത്രകഥപു സ്തകം ഉപയോഗിച്ചു

with these comic books.

വായിക്കാന് പഠിപ്പിക്കുവാന് തുടങ്ങി.

And so, I remember night after night,

you'd hear all these men, these really hardened criminals,

ജെയിംസിനു ചുറ്റും ഈ കാഠിന്യ ഹൃദയരായ കുറ്റവാളികളിരുന്ന്

huddled around John James, reciting, "Take that, Spidey!"

ആവര്ത്തിച്ചിരുന്നു “ഇതാ പിടിച്ചോ സ്പീഡീ!”

(Laughter)

It's incredible.

അതവിശ്വസനീയമായിരുന്നു.

I was really worried.

ഞാന് ചിന്താകുലനായിരുന്നു.

He didn't know what death row meant.

മരണ ശിക്ഷയെന്തെന്നവനറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല.

I'd been there twice,

ഞാനവിടെ മുമ്പും രണ്ടു പ്രാവശ്യം

and I was terribly afraid that I was going to die.

കിടന്നിരുന്നു, മരണത്തെ പേടിച്ചിരുന്നു

And he would always laugh, and say,

പക്ഷെഅവന് ചിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു പറഞ്ഞു,

"Come on, man, we'll make it out."

“ഇല്ല നമ്മളിതിനെ അതിജീവിക്കും”.

Then I'd say, "How do you know?"

അപ്പോള് ഞാന് ചോദിച്ചു, “അതെങ്ങിനെ നിനക്കറിയാം?”

And he said, "Oh, I heard it on the grapevine."

അവന്റെ മറുപടി “ഊഹാപോഹങ്ങളങ്ങിനെയാണ്.”

They killed him.

അവരവനെകൊന്നു.

They handcuffed him to a chair,

ഒരു കസേരയിലവനെ ബന്ധിച്ചു,

and they tacked his penis to a table with a six-inch nail,

അവന്റെ ജനന്ദ്രിയം 6 ഇഞ്ച് നീളമുള്ള് ആണി കൊണ്ട് ഒരു മേശയിലടിച്ചു.

then left him there to bleed to death.

ചോരയൊഴുകാനനുവദിച്ചു മരണത്തിലെത്തിച്ചു.

That's how I ended up in solitary, because I let my feelings be known.

എന്നെ വീണ്ടും ഒറ്റതടവിലാക്കി, കാരണം എന്റ്റെ വികാരങ്ങള് ഞാന് പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു.

All around us, everywhere, there are people like this.

നമുക്കു ചുറ്റുപാടും എല്ലായിടത്തും ഇതുപോലുള്ള ആളുകളുണ്ടു.

The Igbo used to say that they built their own gods.

ഇഗ്ബോക്കാര് പറയുമായിരുന്നു, നാം നമ്മുടെ ദൈവങ്ങളെയുണ്ടാക്കി.

They would come together as a community,

അവരൊരു സമൂഹമായിവന്നു, തങ്ങളുടെ

and they would express a wish.

ആഗ്രഹങ്ങള് പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു.

And their wish would then be brought to a priest,

ആ ആഗ്രഹം ഒരു പുരോഹിതനെയേല്പ്പിച്ചു,

who would find a ritual object,

അയാള് ചിഹ്നങ്ങള് കണ്ടെത്തി,

and the appropriate sacrifices would be made,

കര്മ്മങ്ങള് നടത്തി,

and the shrine would be built for the god.

ദൈവത്തിനെ കുടിയിരുത്തി.

But if the god became unruly and began to ask for human sacrifice,

പക്ഷെ ദൈവങ്ങള് അനുസരണയില്ലതെ, മനുഷ്യക്കുരുതിയാവശ്യപ്പെട്ടാല്

the Igbos would destroy the god.

ഇഗ്ബോക്കരതിനെ നശിപ്പിച്ചു.

They would knock down the shrine,

അവര് കുടിയിരുത്തിയ സ്ഥലം ഇടിച്ചുകളയുകയും,

and they would stop saying the god's name.

ദൈവനാമം ഉപയോഗിക്കതിരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

This is how they came to reclaim their humanity.

അങ്ങിനെയവര് തങ്ങളുടെ മനുഷ്യത്വം വീണ്ടെടുത്തു.

Every day, all of us here,

നാമെല്ലവരും ദൈവങ്ങളെ

we're building gods that have gone rampant,

യുണ്ടാക്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു, വിളറിപിടിച്ചവ,

and it's time we started knocking them down

അവയെ നശിപ്പിക്കേണ്ട സമയമതിക്രമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു,

and forgetting their names.

അവയുടെ പേരുകള് മറ്ക്കേണ്ടതിന്റ്റേയും.

It doesn't require a tremendous thing.

അതിനു അധികമൊന്നും വിഷമമില്ല.

All it requires is to recognize among us, every day --

ഇത്രമാത്രം – നാമ്മുടെയിടയില്, എന്നും, ചിലര്ക്കെന്കിലും

the few of us that can see -- are surrounded by people

കാണാനവും ഞാന് വിവരിച്ചതുപോലുള്ള

like the ones I've told you.

ആളുകള് അവരെയംഗീകരിക്കുക.

There are some of you in this room, amazing people,

ഈമുറിയിലിപ്പോള് നമ്മുടെ മനുഷ്യത്വത്തിന്റെ

who offer all of us the mirror to our own humanity.

പ്രതിബിംബം കാണിക്കാനവുന്ന അതിശ്ക്താരായ പലരുമുണ്ട്.

I want to end with a poem by an American poet called Lucille Clifton.

ഞാന് അമേരിക്കന് കവിയായ ലൂസ്ലി ക്ലിഫറ്റണ് ന്റെ കവിതയോടെ അവസാനിപ്പിക്കനാഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു.

The poem is called "Libation," and it's for my friend Vusi

കവിതയുടെ പേരു “ആചാരപാനം” (ലിബേഷന്). ഈ സമൂഹത്തിലെവിടെയൊയിരിക്കുന്ന

who is in the audience here somewhere.
