There is some medical news that nobody, absolutely nobody,

It was three years ago that I got a call in my office

And then suddenly we had a Zach,

But a few months before, I'd started feeling pain in my stomach

and had gone to every expert to find out why.

No one could tell me.

And then, out of the blue,

some physician's assistant called me at work

to tell me that I had stage IV cancer,

and that I was going to need to come to the hospital right away.

And all I could think of to say was,

"But I have a son.

I can't end.

This world can't end.

It has just begun."

And then I called my husband, and he rushed to find me

دواتر په‌یوه‌ندیم به‌ هاوسه‌ره‌كه‌م كرد، خێرا هات بمدۆزێته‌وه‌

and I said all the true things that I have known.

و من هه‌موو شته‌ ڕاسته‌كانم گوت كه‌ زانی بووم.

I said, "I have loved you forever,

گوتم،"بۆ هه‌میشه‌ خۆشم ویستوویت،

I have loved you forever.

بۆ هه‌میشه‌ خۆشم ویستوویت.

I am so sorry.

زۆر داوای لێبوردن ده‌كه‌م.

Please take care of our son."

تكایه‌ ئاگات له‌ كوڕه‌كه‌مان بێت."

And then as I began the walk to the hospital,

پاشان هه‌ر كه‌ بەرەو‌ نه‌خۆشخانه ‌ڕۆیشتم،

it crossed my mind for the first time,

بۆ یه‌كه‌م جار به‌ مێشكم داهات،

"Oh. How ironic."

"ئۆ. چه‌ند گاڵته‌خوازه‌."

I had just written a book called "Blessed."

هه‌ر تازه‌ په‌رتووكێكم به‌ناوی "پیرۆز" نووسیوه‌.

I am a historian

من مێژوونووسم

and an expert in the idea that good things happen to good people.

و شاره‌زامه‌ له‌و بیرۆكه‌ی كه‌ شتی باش بۆ خه‌ڵكی باش ڕووده‌دات.

I research a form of Christianity nicknamed "the prosperity gospel,"

توێژینه‌وه‌ له‌ سێکتێکی ئایینی مەسیحیەت ده‌كه‌م بە"ئینجیلی سه‌ركه‌تن"

for its very bold promise that God wants you to prosper.

I never considered myself a follower of the prosperity gospel.

I was simply an observer.

The prosperity gospel believes that God wants to reward you

if you have the right kind of faith.

God will give you health and wealth

and boundless happiness.

Life is like a boomerang:

ژیان وه‌كو دارێكی چه‌ماوه‌یه‌:

if you're good,

گه‌ر باش بیت،

good things will always come back to you.

شتی باش هه‌میشه‌ بۆ تۆ دێته‌وه‌.

Think positively. Speak positively.

به‌ ئه‌رێنیی بیربكه‌وه‌. به‌ ئه‌رێنیی قسه ‌بكه‌.

Nothing is impossible if you believe.

I got interested in this very American theology

when I was 18 or so,

and by 25 I was traveling the country interviewing its celebrities.

about how they live their best lives now.

I visited with people in hospital waiting rooms

and plush offices.

I held hands with people in wheelchairs,

praying to be cured.

I earned my reputation as destroyer of family vacations

for always insisting on being dropped off at the fanciest megachurch in town.

If there was a river running through the sanctuary,

شارۆچكه‌كه‌. گه‌ر ڕووبارێك هه‌بوایه‌ به‌ په‌رستگاكه‌ بڕوات،

an eagle flying freely in the auditorium,

هه‌ڵۆیه‌ك به‌ ئازادیی له‌ هۆڵی كۆبوونه‌وه‌كه‌ ده‌فڕێت،

or an enormous spinning golden globe,

یاخود تۆپێكی زێرین كه‌ به‌ شێوه‌یه‌كی سه‌رنجڕاكێش ده‌خولێته‌وه‌.

I was there.

من له‌وێ بووم.

When I first started studying this, the whole idea of being "blessed"

wasn't what it is today.

ئه‌وه‌ نه‌بوو كه‌ ئێستا هه‌یه‌.

It was not, like it is now,

ئه‌وه‌ نه‌بوو، وه‌كو ئه‌وه‌ی ئێستا،

an entire line of "#blessed" home goods.

It was not yet a flood of "#blessed" vanity license plates and T-shirts

and neon wall art.

و دیواری هونه‌ریی نیۆن نییه‌.

I had no idea that "blessed" would become one of the most common cultural cliches,

one of the most used hashtags on Instagram,

to celebrate barely there bikini shots,

as if to say, "I am so blessed.

Thank you, Jesus, for this body."

I had not yet fully grasped the way that the prosperity gospel

دركم به‌وه‌ نه‌كرد بوو كه‌ ئه‌و ڕێگه‌یه‌ی ئینجیلی سه‌ركه‌وتن

had become the great civil religion,

ببووه‌ ئایینی شارستانیی گه‌وره‌،

offering another transcendent account

of the core of the American Dream.

Rather than worshipping the founding of America itself,

the prosperity gospel worshipped Americans.

It deifies and ritualizes their hungers,

their hard work and moral fiber.

Americans believe in a gospel of optimism,

and they are their own proof.

But despite telling myself,

" من ته‌نیا توێژینه‌وه‌ له‌سه‌ر ئه‌و شته‌ ده‌كه‌م، من هیچ شتێكم وه‌كو ئه‌وان نییه‌،"

"I'm just studying this stuff, I'm nothing like them,"

when I got my diagnosis,

كاتێك پشكنینه‌كانم وه‌رگرته‌وه‌،

I suddenly understood how deeply invested I was

له‌ناكاو تێگه‌یشتم چه‌ند به‌ قووڵیی وه‌به‌رهێنانم ده‌كرد

in my own Horatio Alger theology.

If you live in this culture, whether you are religious or not,

گه‌ر له‌و شارستانییه‌ته‌ ده‌ژیت، جا دیندار بیت یاخود نا،

it is extremely difficult to avoid falling into the trap

زۆر زه‌حمه‌ته‌ دووربكه‌وییه‌وه‌ له‌ كه‌وتنه‌ ناو ته‌ڵه‌ی

of believing that virtue and success go hand in hand.

باوه‌ڕ بوون به‌وه‌ی چاكه‌ و سه‌ركه‌وتن ده‌ستاو ده‌ست له‌گه‌ڵ یه‌ك ده‌ڕۆن.

The more I stared down my diagnosis,

the more I recognized that I had my own quiet version

of the idea that good things happen to good people.

Aren't I good?

Aren't I special somehow?

ئایا هه‌ندێك تایبه‌ت نیم؟

I have committed zero homicides

to date.

So why is this happening to me?

I wanted God to make me good

and to reward my faith with just a few shining awards along the way.

OK, like, a lot of shining awards.

I believed that hardships were only detours

on what I was certain would be my long, long life.

As is this case with many of us, it's a mindset that served me well.

كه‌ زۆربه‌مان هه‌مانه‌، ئه‌مه‌ هۆشمه‌ندییه‌ زۆر باش خزمه‌تی كردووم،

The gospel of success drove me to achieve,

to dream big,

to abandon fear.

It was a mindset that served me well

until it didn't,

until I was confronted with something I couldn't manage my way out of;

until I found myself saying into the phone,

because it was all I could think of to say.

That was the most difficult moment to accept:

the phone call, the walk to the hospital,

په‌یوه‌ندییه‌ ته‌له‌فۆنییه‌كه‌، چوون بۆ نه‌خۆشخانه‌،

when I realized that my own personal prosperity gospel

كه‌ زانیم ئینجیلی تایبه‌تی خۆم بۆ سه‌ركه‌وتن

had failed me.

Anything I thought was good or special about me could not save me --

my hard work, my personality,

my humor, my perspective.

I had to face the fact that my life is built with paper walls,

and so is everyone else's.

from a problem that could destroy something irreplaceable

or alter our lives completely.

We know that in life there are befores and afters.

I am asked all the time to say that I would never go back,

or that I've gained so much in perspective.

And I tell them no,

و پێیان ده‌ڵێم نه‌خێر،

before was better.

A few months after I got sick, I wrote about this

چه‌ند مانگێك دوای ئه‌وه‌ی نه‌خۆش كه‌وتم، له‌باره‌ی ئه‌مه‌ نووسیم

and then I sent it off to an editor at the "New York Times."

دواتر بۆ نووسه‌رێكم نارد له‌ گۆڤاری "نیویۆرك تایمز."

In retrospect, taking one of the most vulnerable moments of your life

وه‌ك وه‌بیرهێنانه‌وه‌، وه‌رگرتنی ساتێك له‌ ژیانت كه‌ زۆر بێهێز بوویت

and turning into an op-ed

is not an amazing way to feel less vulnerable.

I think it is because of the questions I asked.

I asked: How do you live without quite so many reasons

for the bad things that happen?

I asked: Would it be better to live without outrageous formulas

پرسیم: ئایا باشتره‌ به‌بێ هاوكێشه‌ی ئێجگار گه‌وره‌ بژیت

for why people deserve what they get?

به‌وه‌ی بۆچی خه‌ڵك شایه‌نی ئه‌وه‌ن كه‌ تووشی ده‌بن؟

And what was so funny and so terrible was, of course,

و ئه‌وه‌ی كه‌ زۆر پێكه‌نیناوی و زۆر سامناك بوو به‌ دڵنیایی،

I thought I asked people to simmer down

وابیرم كرده‌وه‌ داوام له‌ خه‌ڵك كرد هێورببنه‌وه‌

on needing an explanation for the bad things that happened.

و بوه‌ستن له‌ پێویستی ڕوونكردنه‌وه‌ بۆ ئه‌و شته‌ خراپانه‌ی كه‌ ڕوویانداوه‌.

So what did thousands of readers do?

بۆیه‌ هه‌زاران خوێنه‌ر چییان كرد؟

Yeah, they wrote to defend the idea that there had to be a reason

نووسییان بۆ به‌رگریكردن له‌و بیرۆكه‌یه‌ی كه‌ ده‌بویه‌ هۆكارێك هه‌بێت

for what happened to me.

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی كه‌ بۆمن ڕوویدا.

And they really want me to understand the reason.

و به‌راستیی ده‌یانه‌وێت له‌ هۆكاره‌كه‌ تێبگه‌م.

People want me to reassure them that my cancer is all part of a plan.

خه‌ڵك ده‌یه‌وێت دڵنیایان بكه‌مه‌وه‌ كه‌ شێرپه‌نجه‌كه‌م به‌شێكه‌ له‌ پلانێك.

A few letters even suggested it was God's plan that I get cancer

ته‌نانه‌ت چه‌ند نامه‌یه‌ك پێشنیازییان كرد پلانی خودا بووكه‌ تووشی شێرپه‌نجه‌ ببم

so I could help people by writing about it.

People are certain it is a test of my character

or proof of something terrible I've done.

They want me to know without a doubt

that there is a hidden logic to this seeming chaos.

They tell my husband,

while I'm still in the hospital,

that everything happens for a reason,

كه‌ هه‌موو شتێك له‌به‌ر هۆكارێك ڕوو ده‌دات،

and then stammer awkwardly when he says,

و زمانیان ته‌ته‌ڵه‌ ده‌كات به‌ ناڕێكیی كاتێك ئه‌و ده‌ڵێت،

"I'd love to hear it.

"پێم خۆشه‌ گوێم لێبێت.

I'd love to hear the reason my wife is dying."

پێم خۆشه‌ گوێبیستی هۆكاری مه‌رگی خێزانه‌كه‌م بم،"

And I get it.

و من تێده‌گه‌م.

We all want reasons.

ئێمه‌ هه‌موومان هۆكارمان ده‌وێت.

We want formulas

هاوكێشه‌مان ده‌وێت

to predict whether our hard work will pay off,

پێشبینی ئه‌مه‌ بكات ئایا كاری جددیمان به‌رهه‌می ده‌بێت،

whether our love and support will always make our partners happy

ئایا خۆشه‌ویستی و هاندانمان بۆ هاوسه‌ره‌كانمان دڵخۆشیان ده‌كات

and our kids love us.

و منداڵه‌كانمان خۆشیان ده‌وێین.

We want to live in a world in which not one ounce

ده‌مانه‌وێت له‌ جیهانیك بژین كه‌ گرامێك له‌

of our hard work or our pain or our deepest hopes will be for nothing.

كاری جددیمان یاخود ئازاره‌كانمان یان قووڵ ترین هیواكانمان له‌به‌ر هیچ هۆكارێك نه‌بێت

We want to live in a world in which nothing is lost.

ده‌مانه‌وێت له‌ جیهانێك بژین كه‌ هیچ شتێك ون نابێت.

But what I have learned in living with stage IV cancer

ئه‌وه‌ی كه‌ فێری بووم له‌ ژیان له‌گه‌ڵ شێرپه‌نجه‌ی به‌د

is that there is no easy correlation

ئه‌وه‌یه‌ هیچ په‌یوه‌ندییه‌كی ئاسان نییه‌

between how hard I try

له‌ نێوان تێكۆشانم

and the length of my life.

و درێژیی ژیانم.

In the last three years, I've experienced more pain and trauma

له‌ سێ ساڵی ڕابردوو، به‌ ئازارو كۆستێكی زۆر تێپه‌ڕیم

than I ever thought I could survive.

زۆر زیاتر له‌وه‌ی بیرم ده‌كرده‌وه‌ كه‌ بتوانم ڕزگام بێت.

I realized the other day that I've had so many abdominal surgeries

ڕۆژێك بۆم ده‌ركه‌وت نه‌شته‌رگه‌رییه‌كی زۆری سكم بۆ كراوه‌

that I'm on my fifth belly button,

كه‌ له‌ پێنجه‌م ته‌نی سكمم،

and this last one is my least favorite.

و كۆتاهه‌مینیان كه‌مترین هه‌ڵبژارده‌ی منه‌.

But at the same time, I've experienced love,

به‌ڵام له‌ هه‌مان كاتدا، خۆشه‌ویستیم ئه‌زموون كرد،

so much love,

خۆشه‌ویستیێكی زۆر،

love I find hard to explain.

خۆشه‌ویستییه‌ك كه‌ ناتوانم لێكی بده‌مه‌وه‌.

The other day, I was reading the findings

ڕۆژێكیان، سه‌ره‌نجامه‌كانی

of the Near Death Experience Research Foundation,

دامه‌زراوه‌ی لێكۆڵینه‌وه‌ی ئه‌زموونی نزیكبوونه‌وه‌ له‌ مردنم ده‌خوێنده‌وه‌

and yes, there is such a thing.

به‌ڵێ، شتێكی وا هه‌یه‌.

ئه‌و خه‌ڵكانه‌ی چاوپێكه‌وتنیان له‌گه‌ڵ كرا بوو له‌باره‌ی نزیكبوونه‌وه‌یان له‌ مردن

People were interviewed about their brushes with death

in all kinds of circumstances:

له‌ هه‌موو جۆره‌ حاڵه‌تێك:

car accidents, labor and delivery,

ڕووداوی ئۆتۆمبێل، منداڵبوون،

suicides.

هه‌وڵی خۆكوشتن.

And many reported the same odd thing:

و زۆربه‌یان باسی هه‌مان شتی نامۆیان كرد:

love.

خۆشه‌ویستیی.

I'm sure I would have ignored it if it hadn't reminded me

دڵنیام خۆم لێی گێل ده‌كرد گه‌ر شتێك كه‌

of something I had experienced,

پێیدا تێپه‌ڕیبووم وه‌بیری نه‌هێنابامه‌وه‌،

something I felt uncomfortable telling anyone:

شتێك كه‌ هه‌ستم به‌ نامورتاحی ده‌كرد به‌ هه‌ر كه‌سێكم گوتبا:

that when I was sure that I was going to die,

ئه‌و كاته‌ی كه‌ دڵنیابووم ده‌مرم،

I didn't feel angry.

هه‌ستم به‌ تووڕه‌یی نه‌كرد.

I felt loved.

هه‌ستم به‌ خۆشه‌ویستیی كرد.

It was one of the most surreal things I have experienced.

یه‌كێك بوو له‌ نامۆترین ئه‌و شتانه‌ی كه‌ پێیدا تێپه‌ڕیووم.

In a time in which I should have felt abandoned by God,

له‌ كاتێك كه‌ هه‌ستمكردبا خودا دووری خستوومه‌ته‌وه‌،

I was not reduced to ashes.

نه‌بوومه‌ خۆڵه‌مێش.

I felt like I was floating,

هه‌ستمكرد سه‌رده‌كه‌وتم،

floating on the love and prayers

سه‌رده‌كه‌وتم له‌سه‌ر خۆشه‌ویستی و پاڕانه‌وه‌ی

of all those who hummed around me like worker bees,

ئه‌وانه‌ی كه‌ له‌ده‌ورم هاژه‌هاژیان ده‌كرد وه‌كو هه‌نگه‌ ئیشكه‌ره‌كان.

bringing me notes and socks and flowers

كه‌ یاداشت و گوڵ و گۆره‌وییان بۆ ده‌هێنام

and quilts embroidered with words of encouragement.

له‌گه‌ڵ لێفه‌ی نه‌خشێنراو به‌ ده‌ربرینی هاندان.

But when they sat beside me,

به‌ڵام كه‌ له‌ ته‌نیشتم دانیشتن،

my hand in their hands,

ده‌ستم له ‌ده‌ستیان بوو،

my own suffering began to feel like it had revealed to me

ئازاره‌كانم ده‌ستیان پێكرد وه‌كو ئه‌وه‌ی

the suffering of others.

ئازاره‌كانی ئه‌وانیتری بۆ ده‌رخستم.

I was entering a world of people just like me,

ده‌چوومه‌ ناو جیهانێك خه‌ڵكی وه‌كو منی لێ بوو،

people stumbling around in the debris

خه‌ڵكانێك ده‌ستیان ده‌خسته‌ پارچه‌ی

of dreams they thought they were entitled to

ئه‌و خه‌ونانه‌ی كه ‌وایانده‌زانی شایه‌نین

and plans they didn't realize they had made.

ئه‌و پلانانه‌ی كه‌ نه‌یانده‌زانی به‌ده‌ستیان هێناوه‌.

It was a feeling of being more connected, somehow, with other people,

به‌شێوه‌یه‌ك، وه‌كو په‌یوه‌ندیكردن بوو له‌گه‌ڵ خه‌ڵكی تر،

experiencing the same situation.

كه‌ به‌ هه‌مان بارودۆخ تێده‌په‌ڕن.

And that feeling stayed with me for months.

ئه‌و هه‌سته‌ بۆ چه‌ندین مانگ له‌ مندا مایه‌وه‌.

In fact, I'd grown so accustomed to it

ڕاستییه‌كه‌ی، له‌گه‌ڵی لێڕاهات بووم به‌ڕاده‌یه‌ك

that I started to panic at the prospect of losing it.

كه‌ ترسام له‌ ئه‌گه‌ری له‌ده‌ستدانی.

So I began to ask friends, theologians, historians, nuns I liked,

بۆیه‌ ده‌ست مكرد به‌ پرسیاركردن له‌ هاوڕێ، زانای ئایینی، مێژوونووس، وڕاهیبه‌كان،

"What I am I going to do when that loving feeling is gone?"

"من چی ده‌كه‌م كاتێك ئه‌و هه‌ستی خۆشه‌ویستییه‌م نامێنێت؟"

And they knew exactly what I was talking about,

به‌ته‌واوی ده‌یانزانی باسی چی ده‌كه‌م،

because they had either experienced it themselves

چونكه‌ یان بۆ خۆیان پێیدا تێپه‌ڕی بوون

or they'd read about it in great works of Christian theology.

یاخود له‌ ئایینی مه‌سیحی خوێندوویانه‌.

And they said,

و دەیانگۆت،

"Yeah, it'll go.

"به‌ڵێ، ده‌ڕوات.

The feelings will go.

هه‌سته‌كان ده‌ڕۆن.

And there will be no formula for how to get it back."

هیچ هاوكێشه‌یه‌ك نابێت بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی چۆن بێگێڕیه‌وه‌."

But they offered me this little piece of reassurance,

به‌ڵام ئه‌م دڵنیاییدانه‌ بچووكه‌یان پێشكه‌ش كردم،

and I clung to it.

و ده‌ستم پێوه‌ی گرت.

They said,

گووتیان،

"When the feelings recede like the tides,

"كاتێك هه‌سته‌كان وه‌كو شه‌پۆله‌كانی ده‌ریا ده‌كشێنه‌وه‌،

they will leave an imprint."

شوێنه‌وارێك جێ دێڵن."

And they do.

به‌ڕاستی وایه‌.

And it is not proof of anything,

ئه‌مه‌ سه‌لماندنی هیچ شتێك نییه‌،

and it is nothing to boast about.

و شتێك نییه‌ شانازیی پێوه‌بكه‌یت.

It was just a gift.

ته‌نیا خه‌لاتێك بوو،

So I can't respond to the thousands of emails I get

ناتوانم وه‌ڵامی هه‌موو ئه‌و نامانه‌ بده‌مه‌وه‌ كه‌ بۆم دێن

with my own five-step plan to divine health

له‌ په‌رتووكی پێنج هه‌نگاو بۆ ته‌ندروستییه‌كی نموونه‌یی

یاخود له‌ په‌رتووكێك بۆ هه‌سته‌ سه‌ركه‌وتووه‌ سیحرییه‌كان،

and magical floating feelings.

I see that the world is jolted by events that are wonderful and terrible,

ده‌بینم جیهان به‌ ڕووداووی خۆش و ناخۆش ،

gorgeous and tragic.

دڵڕفێن و تراژیدی ده‌هه‌ژێت.

I can't reconcile the contradiction,

ناتوانم شیكاری دژێتییه‌كه‌ بكه‌م،

except that I am beginning to believe that these opposites

جگه‌ له‌وه‌ی وا بڕوا ده‌كه‌م كه‌ ئه‌و شته‌ پێچه‌وانانه‌

do not cancel each other out.

هیچیان ئه‌ویتر هه‌ڵناوه‌شێنێته‌وه‌.

Life is so beautiful,

ژیان زۆر جوانه‌،

and life is so hard.

و ژیان زۆر زه‌حمه‌ته‌.

Today, I am doing quite well.

ئه‌مڕۆ،هه‌ست ده‌كه‌م زۆر باشم.

The immunotherapy drugs appear to be working,

وادیاره‌ ده‌رمانه‌كانی چاره‌سه‌ری به‌رگریی ئیشی خۆی ده‌كات.

and we are watching and waiting with scans.

ئێمه‌ چاودێری نه‌خۆشییه‌كه‌ ده‌كه‌ین.

I hope I will live a long time.

هیوادارم بۆ ماوه‌یه‌كی درێژ بژیم.

I hope I will live long enough to embarrass my son

هیوادارم بۆ ماوه‌یه‌كی درێژ بژیم بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی كوڕه‌كه‌م شه‌رمه‌زار بكه‌م

and to watch my husband lose his beautiful hair.

و سه‌یری هاوسه‌ره‌كه‌م بكه‌م تاڵه‌ جوانه‌كانی قژی له ‌ده‌ست ده‌دات.

And I think I might.

باوه‌ڕم وایه‌ ده‌ژیم.

But I am learning to live

به‌ڵام فێر ده‌بم بژیم

and to love

و خۆشه‌ویستی بكه‌م

without counting the cost,

به‌بێ ژماردنی له‌ ده‌ست چوونه‌كان،

without reasons and assurances that nothing will be lost.

به‌بێ هۆكار و بێ دڵنیاییدان به‌وه‌ی هیچ شتێك له ‌ده‌ست ناده‌یت.

Life will break your heart,

ژیان دڵت ده‌شكێنێت،

له‌وانه‌یه‌ ژیان هه‌موو ئه‌و شتانه‌ی كه‌ هه‌ته‌ لێتی ببات

and life may take everything you have

and everything you hope for.

و هه‌موو شتێك كه‌ هیوای بۆ ده‌خوازیت.

But there is one kind of prosperity gospel that I believe in.

به‌ڵام جۆرێكی ئینجیلی سه‌ركه‌وتن هه‌یه‌ كه‌ بڕوام پێی هه‌یه‌.

I believe that in the darkness,

باوه‌ڕم وایه‌ كه‌ له‌ تاریكییدا،

even there,

ته‌نانه‌ت له‌وێ،

there will be beauty,

جوانیی

and there will be love.

و خۆشه‌وبستیی ده‌بێت.

And every now and then,

جار نا جار،

it will feel like more than enough.

هه‌ست به‌ قایل بوون ده‌كه‌یت.
